Double bullet day for Vesper at IMA Maxi Europeans
After one offshore and two days of coastal racing, today the fleet competing out of Sorrento, Italy for the International Maxi Association's Maxi European Championship were sent off on two windward-leeward courses on the Bay of Naples along the north coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula. Once again conditions were difficult with much cloud activity as well as the occasional monsoon-grade downpour, causing crews to rechristen the race's otherwise magnificent host port 'Torrento'. The rain and clouds once again made for a shifty race course combined with a large swell running, the result of strong winds blowing for the last 24 hours offshore. Today was generally the windiest to date with 15 knots for the first race dropping to 10 for the second.

With substantial points to be gained today going into tomorrow's grand finale coastal race, crews were contemplating their score-lines now they can discard their worst result (excluding the Regata dei Tre Golfi offshore).

After not racing yesterday, today Jim Swartz's Maxi 72 Vesper bounced back with a vengeance and, in a commanding consistent performance, won both races under IRC corrected time. -- James Boyd

Transat Paprec title going down to the wire
The 1994, second edition of the two-handed race across the Atlantic which is now the Transat Paprec was famously won by French sailing legends Jean Le Cam and Roland Jourdain by just 63 seconds. After 20 days and 20 hours of racing between Lorient and Saint Barthelemy, Le Cam and Jourdain pipped Bertrand de Broc and Marc Guillemot by the tiniest of margins.

This Transat Paprec, the first to be raced in 'mixed doubles' format, looks set to deliver a truly nail biting finale which, if it does not see as close a finish between first and second as 1994, this edition , the second edition ever to be raced in Figaro BENETEAU 3 one designs is shaping up to have the closest finish yet between the top five.

With less than 350 miles to go of the 3890 mile course, there is still nothing between the top three. And after 17 and a half days of racing, the top trio are still mostly within visual sight of each other in the same way they might be during a training day race in Brittany.

Erwan Tabarly sums up, "It's a real speed race. You also have to negotiate squalls and clouds well and keep trimming your boat properly. Two days before the finish no one really has any kind of lead. The mindset comes into it too. Wanting too much to control or watch too closely what others are doing, you can forget to just take the best route. You have to stay true to your plan, go your own way without giving in to the others. Even if they don't stay stuck in light winds around the island, the boats are very close and you can be overtaken during the passage round of the island, it has happened before. You can stay stuck for a few minutes by going around the tip at Colombier. It never lasts long but it can be enough to get passed by a boat. Victory can be won there. It's less tricky then, going down to the line."

Top five at 1700hrs BST WEDNESDAY 17 May 2023
1. Mutuellle Bleue (Corentin Horeau/Pauline Courtois) 353.2 nautical miles to finish
2. Skipper MACIF (Lois Berrehar/Charlotte Yven) + 0.9 miles
3. Region Bretagne CMB Performance (Gaston Morvan/Anne Claire le Berre) +1.4 miles
4. Region Normandie (Guillaume Pirouelle/Sophie Faguet) + 10.2 miles
5. Cap Ingelec (Camille Bertel/Pierre Leboucher) + 12.9 miles

Genuine Irish Women Sailors Just Get On With It, Without Making A Fuss And Seeking Patronising Support
Whatever you may think about the historic gun-running by Erskine & Molly Childers' Asgard into Howth on July 26th 1914, there's no denying the fact that this was one of the most significant interactions of sailing as a sport with Irish national life in its most all-embracing form. Indeed, there is perhaps only one other sailing-related happening which has totally lodged itself so enduringly in the national consciousness, and that is the August 2016 arrival of Annalise Murphy into the National Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire with her sailing Silver Medal, won at the Rio Olympics. It was an occasion of purest shared joy which chimed perfectly with the sense of a country finally emerging from the economic recession of 2009-2012.

That velvet summer night of nationally-shared Dun Laoghaire celebration simply took it for granted that it was a woman sailor who had made all this possible. Yet in drawing any comparisons with the singular events of 102 years earlier, so much is under consideration that it is easy to overlook another key fact. It was a woman sailor who helmed Asgard throughout the tricky manoeuvre which brought the ketch and her important cargo safely alongside Howth's East Pier to affect the course of history.

Cup Spy: Te Rehutai signs off ETNZ's AC75 Auckland based development program
What happened in the Cup - May 15, 2023:

American Magic has ceased sailing pending a move to Barcelona with their AC75 and AC-40. Media reports in New Zealand have it that American Magic has sought dispensation from the Arbitration Panel to not be required to compete in the Preliminary Regatta in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The Protocol governing the 37th America's Cup provides in 10.2(a) a competitor is not obliged to compete if they have "reasonable and genuine safety concerns of the Competitor." This is a matter for the Arbitration Panel to decide, otherwise there is a standard points deduction to be applied.

Luna Rossa sailed from Cagliari, in their AC-40 One Design

Emirates Team New Zealand sailed for the final time in Auckland in their AC75, the 2021 America's Cup winner, which has been running a test and development program for 19 days starting on March 20, 2023.

INEOS Britannia sailed from Mallorca in their LEQ12 test and development boat "T6"

Alinghi Red Bull Racing did not sail.

No further news from the Orient Express Team (formerly K-Challenge).

RNZYS Mastercard Youth Training And Performance Programmes
Emirates Team New Zealand is directly investing in the future of New Zealand's world class sailing talent by purchasing a renewed fleet of ten Elliott 7's yachts for the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron's Mastercard Youth Training Programme (YTP) and Performance Programmes which have long been globally regarded as world leading Youth Training for performance keel boat sailors.

The RNZYS Mastercard Youth Training scheme is now in its 36th year, starting in 1987 and has had over 1200 sailors graduate through the programme in this time. It has produced a long list of some of the world's top sailors, most recently the likes of Nick Egnot-Johnson 2022 Open Match Racing World Champion, and Celia Willison second in the 2022 Women's Match Racing World Championship, who are among many graduates carving a successful path on the international stage.

The investment by Emirates Team New Zealand is a continuation of its support of the development of youth sailing with its representative yacht club over the years.

Emirates Team New Zealand CEO Grant Dalton explained the importance of supporting the RNZYS Mastercard Youth Training programme. "This programme is one of the cornerstones of the development of New Zealand sailing talent, it is the pathway from teenage enthusiasts to high performance sailors in New Zealand, and around the world. And it has been this way for many years. So, we are happy to be able to continue to support it by refreshing the fleet of Elliott 7's, the legacy of which will go well beyond the physical boats themselves."

Raceboats Only YYACHTS Y7. POA EUR.

The Y7 was created in collaboration with US designer Bill Tripp, considered one of the world's best naval architects. Our goal was to combine comfortable sailing performance with competitive sailing performance, even on the regatta course.

In conditions where other yachts still use their engines, the sails are already set on the Y7. A displacement of only 29 tons and almost 300 square meters of sail area at wind make move the yacht even in light winds; Y7 owners don't have to worry about the perfect weather all the time.

All halyards, sheets and stretchers run hidden to the steering columns - so the helmsman can operate the Y7 alone at any time. This is not a matter of course for a 70-foot yacht and allows the owner to sail with a very small crew or even on his own.
