2023 Open and U23 Finn Europeans
Csopak, Hungary: Laurent Hay, from France, has taken the lead at the 2023 Open and U23 Finn Europeans in Csopak, Hungary, after just one race was possible on the second day on Lake Balaton. Filipe Silva, from Portugal, moves up to second while Hungary's Domonkos Nemeth drops to third. The race was won by Czech Republic's Matouš Červenka, after a close battle with Attila Svastits, from Hungary.

One day made a huge difference to the conditions with strong winds and heavy rain swapped for light winds and sunshine, but though it was much more pleasant, it was equally as challenging for the 70 Finn sailors from 21 nations.

Racing at Csopak is scheduled to continue Tuesday at 10.00 with more wind and more rain forecast. Seven more races are scheduled.

Top Ten after 3 races
1. Laurent Hay, FRA, 8
2. Filipe Silva, POR, 14
3. Domonkos Nemeth, HUN, 17
4. Alessandro Marega, ITA, 19
5. Lawrence Crispin, GBR, 27
6. Elemer Peter Haidekker, HUN, 28
7. Ian Ainslie, RSA, 35
8. Kristian Sjöberg, FIN, 42

Transat Paprec: Playing the long game
It is increasingly looking like it might be the final miles into Saint Barths which might decide the winner of the Transat Paprec, very much depending on the timing of the approach to the French island territory.

There are still 700 miles to the finish but leaders since Saturday Lois Berrëhar and Charlotte Yven (Skipper MACIF) remain unable to shake off second placed rivals Corentin Horeau and Pauline Courtois (Mutuelle Bleue) who are hanging on the leaders coat-tails, in sight at 2.6 nautical miles behind and very much ready to pounce.

The trade winds are declining progressively and the ETA for the finish line for the top group of three is now around 1900hrs Friday evening local time. Friday's local forecast for Saint Barths shows gusty, squally, cloudy weather.

This could prove a minefield for the leaders and offer great opportunities for those behind. Berrëhar finished third in 2011 racing with Tom Laperche arriving some two hours behind the record breaking race winners Nils Palmieri and Julien Villion. Palmieri and Villion's 18 days 5 hours course record set two years ago seems safe.

Top five at 1700hrs BST Monday 15th May 2023
1. Skipper MACIF (Loïs Berrehar/Charlotte Yven) 702 miles to the finish
2. Mutuellle Bleue (Corentin Horeau/Pauline Courtois) + 2.4 miles behind leader
3. Region Bretagne CMB Performance (Gaston Morvan/Anne Claire le Berre) + 9.3 miles
4. Region Normandie (Guillaume Pirouelle/Sophie Faguet) + 24.2 miles
5. Cap Ingelec (Camille Bertel/Pierre Leboucher) + 49.4 miles

America's Cup: Emirates Team NZ sailing at 50kts - Video and on-board audio
Yesterday, May 15, Emirates Team New Zealand wrapped up a 19day testing block with their America's Cup champion AC75, Te Rehutai, which has been upgraded to comply with the key requirements of Version 2 of the AC75 Class Rule.

Outwardly the key changes relate to a lighter overall weight, accomplished by various means including a crew reduction from 11 to eight; removal of the Code Zero and bowsprit, removal of the running backstays, removal of jib winches and replacement of the hand/arm grinding pedestals with cycle powered means of hydraulic pressure generation.

Above the deck there has been numerous subtle changes tidying up the aerodynamics and reducing parasitic drag as much as possible.

The other significant change is that the eight crew operate out of individual "foxholes" and are well protected from the 50-60kts of apparent windspeed, and driving spray, as well as lowering the windage from the sailing crew. In that regard there is no transfer of crew from side to side during/after tacks and gybes.

Sailing At "Full Volume" - A Rare Ride On The AC75 'Te Rehutai'
Magnus Wheatley aboard. Click on image to enlarge.

Magnus Wheatley A first-hand account by Magnus Wheatley.

The opportunity for a non-professional sailor to ride aboard an AC75 is, undoubtedly, a once-in-a-lifetime experience and something so scarce in sailing to be almost unfathomable. So tight are the America's Cup testing and training schedules that teams simply cannot afford that most precious of commodities, time, in a campaign. Joyriders, it would seem, have no place in the America's Cup.

So, when the mooted chance arose, in a scheduling window that was highly weather dependent before Emirates Team New Zealand de-camped to Barcelona for the European summer sailing season, the brief matter of some 23 hours of flying and a 19,674-kilometre journey from Cowes to Auckland was the only barrier. Trifling in comparison to the opportunity.

It's the end of summer here in New Zealand and the arrival into Auckland International was hairy to say the least. An aborted, bumpy landing on an Emirates Airbus A380 and what's called a 'Go Around' in aviation parlance gave a distinct clue as to what the conditions were going to be like in this sailing city and, more importantly, out on the Hauraki Gulf - the Mecca of sailing.

In the America's Cup you rarely get taken into the inner sanctum of a team, but such is this team's confidence borne from some 30 years of solid, hard-won experience at the apex of the game that the welcome was unanimous and gracious.

Youth Foiling Gold Cup Act 2 Antigua On Top
The Antiguan crew, Rum Runners, snatched the overall victory in La Grande Motte on the very last double points race against DutchSail JAJO. Until then their opponents had the upper hand after winning three of the last five races. But the Antiguan team of Rocco Falcone, Filippo Amonti and Alice Cialfi took the highest step of the podium at Act 2 to secure their place in the final in Barcelona next fall.

The last day of competition was intense: light wind and threatening storm clouds for the six finalists who raced a total of 5 regattas. With the point tight and the umpires busy with many penalties, the key attitude was to be consistent and avoid mistakes. The new crew of Team France, a fine winner of two races were too inconsistent, but they leave La Grande Motte on a positive note.

The Youth Foiling Gold Cup 69F 2023 is now half way through, only two events are missing to complete the series, one on each side of the Atlantic, Act 3 in Kingston (Canada), July 10-15, and Act 4 in Torbole (Italy), 21-27 August. There are still four tickets up for grabs for the YFGC Grand Finale in Barcelona (Spain) from November the 2nd to the 5th. At the moment the invited teams are Rum Runners (ANT) and Team JAJO - DutchSail (NED) from Act 2, and Alps Racing (CAN) and Enzedder Racing (NZL) from Act 1.

Final Ranking Act 2 Youth Foiling Gold Cup:
1. Rum Runners (Antigua)
2. Team JAJO - DutchSail (NED)
3. Luna Rossa - Piranha (ITA)
4. Groupe Atlantic Sailing Team(FRA)
5. Team France Jeune (FRA)
6. Luna Rossa - Swordfish (ITA)

Warsash Spring Series and Championship Prize Giving

Warsash Spring Series After some 93 races across the various classes, the 40th Warsash Spring Series and Championship came to an end last weekend. The subsequent prize giving saw 31 prizes and trophies distributed to the 'podium people' by Warsash Sailing Club, along with sailing jackets and bags presented by event partners Helly Hansen.

At a busy clubhouse, Warsash SC Commodore Nigel Rennie thanked everyone concerned for all their efforts, including the 50-strong volunteer race teams led by PRO Peter Knight and Black Group CRO Peter Bateson, the committee boat owners, club support staff and most of all the competitors themselves for taking part.

Most of the prizes were the traditional Warsash glass yachts regularly presented for the event. Two special awards were made to competitors who have been supporting the Warsash Spring Series for a long time - they each won their respective classes by good margins this year in both the Spring Series and the Spring Championship. The Commodore's Cup was awarded to Simon Perry and Jiraffe. The Founder's Trophy was awarded to Quokka, Peter Rutter and James Crew.

Next year's Series will start on Sunday 17 March 2024.

Etchells Bedrock Trophy 2023 Cowes
Six races were scheduled for the Etchells Bedrock Trophy 2023, Race Officer Ian Bullock from the Royal Southern Yacht Club decided with Sunday racing potentially being sailed in little or no breeze that four races should sailed on the Saturday to guarantee a series.

With many boats still travelling back from the Etchells Worlds in Miami it was good to see 11 boats make the start line. In Saturdays light North Easterly breezes the course was set only 3/4 nm with a long spreader leg length to try and allow for the flooding tide that was flowing strongly along the Hillhead shore and across the course.

The Solent winds from the North Shore always guarantee shifty conditions, and that was what the fleet encountered. Rob Goddard Rocketman GBR 1439 played the shifts to great advantage in race 1 to lead at every mark.

While with a short course the start is normally so important, yet selecting the right place to tack for pressure and sailing angle can make great differences, and it was the solo OCS starter, Andy Lawson on No Dramas GBR 1490, who, after restarting and clearing the line, had free air to use wind shifts to his best advantage, winning race 2.

Race 3, the fleet started in dropping pressure and crews were no longer continually sat to windward, and the boat with 2 seconds so far, Jolly Roger GBR1352 sailed by Bruno Van-Dyke moved up a gear, taking the win and the overall lead from Andy Lawson.

Race four we started to see the pressure fade again, but holding just enough to race, and Jolly Roger stamped their authority on the regatta with their second win in trying conditions, where the fleet concertinaed with places changing frequently behind both Van-Dyke and Lawson in second.

As the forecast conditions, and as the PR0, Ian Bullock anticipated, Sunday, there was no sailing, so Jolly Roger sailed by, Bruno, Van-Dyke, Matt Reid, and Matt Hannaby are the 2023 Bedrock Trophy winners, with Andy Lawson, Hamish Mackay and Billy Russell, on No Dramas, the Corinthian winners. The first youth boat was Ziggy with Jack Lewis, Morgan Smith, Rebecca Lewis and AJ Luxton.

Etchells Fleet thanks not only go out to the hard-working race committee team, but also new Etchells vice-captain David Maclean who organised along with the Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club, a great supper and drinks on the Saturday evening. -- Rob Goddard
