Will Tiller Steers Kiwis To Hardy Cup Victory
Three 21-year-old sailors from Auckland's Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron today outsailed their Australian opposition to regain the prestigious Hardy Cup ISAF 3, under 25 match racing event on Sydney Harbour.
Over the past four years, young Australian crews have won the Hardy Cup twice, and now New Zealanders have notched up their second victory over the same period.
Will Tiller, Harry Thurston and Shaun Mason started the final day with a 2-1 semi-final win against the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron's Jordan Reece and then went on to defeat the defending champion Evan Walker in three straight matches in the final.
Over the four day regatta, Tiller and his crew, who sail for Full Metal Jacket Racing, lost only three match races in two round-robins and the semi-final.
Today's Hardy Cup racing, off Point Piper in a shifty 1-12 knot nor'easter, saw boatspeed, tactics and use of the racing rules play significant roles in the outcome of most races.
The Australia versus New Zealand final proved somewhat of an anti-climax, with Will Tilling beating Evan Walker 3-0, winning by 22 seconds in the first match, 20 seconds in the second and by a close 6 seconds in the third and deciding match.
In the petit final to decide third and fourth placings overall, Adrian Short added to New Zealand's good day by defeating Jordan Reece 2-0. -- Peter Campbell
Biggs & Hollis Survive the Tiger to Become the UK Winter Dinghy Champions
The SailJuice Global Warm-Up 2011 concluded in dramatic fashion at a very windy John Merricks Tiger Trophy last weekend. While the 505 of Andy Smith and Tim Needham swept all before them to win all three races on Saturday and a £1,000 cheque for their hat trick, the Merlin Rocket of Matt Biggs and Ben Hollis quietly went about its business to finish 3rd overall at Rutland Water.
That solid result was sufficient for the Blithfield duo to secure victory in the SailJuice Global Warm-Up 2011, a series based on four of the winter's most popular dinghy handicap racing events. Rutland looked set to provide a tense showdown between the leading Merlin and Whitstable's Andrew Peake sailing a Musto Skiff. However the big breeze at Rutland proved too much even for Peake and the Musto Skiff fleet. He was the only Musto Skiff to complete more than one race, and even when his trapeze ring broke in the third heat Peake still battled on to score three finishes.
But the big breeze and short trapezoid course did not lend itself to singlehanded, trapeze and asymmetric sailing, with Peake finishing 28th overall. So Peake stays in 2nd overall, while a 13th place finish at Rutland lifted the Shustoke pair of Stuart and Nick Hydon into 3rd overall sailing their Lark.
For winning the 2011 Series, Biggs and Hollis win £300 of Rooster Sailing gear, which they will receive at the official prizegiving, set to take place at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show at Alexandra Palace at 1245pm on Saturday, 5 March 2011.
Peake wins a £200 voucher to spend with Hyde Sails, and the Hydons win a £100 voucher to spend on equipment from Holt. There are many other prize winners, thanks to the other sponsors of the Series: Laser Performance, RS Sailing, the Musto Skiff class, YachtsandYachting.com and SailJuice.com. The Silk Route
For the first time in the history of the race, the fleet will be sailing from the Middle East to the southern tip of China, following the ancient maritime Silk Route.
After rounding the southern tip of India, the Volvo Open 70s will approach the Malacca Strait, leaving the island of Pulau We, Indonesia to starboard.
Sailors can expect tight racing from this point on. The Malacca Strait is an important shipping lane connecting the Pacific and Indian Ocean and is a very busy zone; the Volvo Open 70s won't be the only vessels trying to get through and the light winds will force them to stay close to their competitors.
The fleet will sail its way out of the strait and into the South China Sea where it will encounter another difficulty: getting through the Spratly Islands, a group of over 750 islands and reefs, many of which are uncharted, making it dangerous to navigate through at high speeds.
The biggest difference on the leg is that the fleet won't be sailing as far north as they did in the previous edition, when the route to Qingdao became one of the coldest and hardest legs of that race for most of the sailors.
However, Leg 3 will present its own difficulties and some sailors will recall the challenges from the last race on the leg from Cochin, India to Singapore and the following one to Qingdao, China.
To get to Qingdao last time, the fleet sailed east in the South China Sea, passing the Luzon Strait where the boats were caught in the toughest weather conditions of the race, with waves measuring up to 15 metres high.
For the first time in the race the boats decided to stop - with the exception of Telefonica Blue, which managed to get across the Strait and finished the leg in first place. Looking for a similar result, Ericsson 3 and Delta Lloyd made the same move, but were not as lucky and suffered serious boat damage.
In the 2011-12 edition Leg 3 does not cover the same route, although the fleet will have to encounter this region and its uncertain conditions on the leg to Auckland.

MOD70: The Birth of a Major Event
"This is the result of a long process" says Steve Ravussin, the skipper and one of the initiator of the series. "To respect the strict one-design concept and to guarantee the performance and the reliability, we had to implement a number of quality controls. It was a huge work, but we managed to achieve it. I believe we have a splendid project that is becoming reality. As a matter of interest, thanks to the implementation of the control procedures, we have already built four sets of floats, with a maximum of 4 kg difference between pieces which are more than 22 meters long." He adds: "Creating a whole one-design series makes it difficult to realize that it is also "my" boat that will leave the shipyard! It is really a different feeling than working on a personal project. I am really happy, I do not realize yet, but this will be fantastic."
The first boat of the MOD70 series will be skippered by the Swiss sailor and will be the ambassador of the Multi One Attitude Foundation, a foundation created besides the MOD70 circuit, whose objective is water preservation. Central meeting point of the race village, the foundation pavilion will be part of the circuit in the stopover cities, in order to make the public aware of water issues and ocean preservation.
Michel Desjoyeaux was also at the shipyard today to see the progress of his future competitors boats. "I have not planned to be here today... But at the end I am happy to be able to start earlier with the MOD70 programme. I am so much looking forward to start sailing the boat end of August!"

"MAPFRE" Back On Track After Daggerboard Repairs
This morning the double Olympic champions revealed details of the exhausting situation experienced on board over a period of four tough days, having broken the port side daggerboard. This is a part weighing some 100 kg and measuring over four metres in length that the Basque sailors managed to repair on board, using the limited resources available and with 20 knots of breeze blowing.
Five days ago Iker and Xabi collided with an object which they were not able to identify, but which damaged one of the daggerboards, a metre to a metre and a half from the tip. "The bow end was more damaged whereas main structure had withstood the impact better, with the deepest part now the rudder stock, totally uncovered," explained the skipper from Hondarribia (Guipuzcoa).
The situation put the "MAPFRE" skippers in a spot of bother: "Without a daggerboard you can survive without dropping back too much as far as Cape Horn, but after that, forget it," commented an honest Iker Martinez.
After four days of hard work, Iker Martinez described the feelings in detail in his email: "We decided to try to put it in place as soon as the wind dropped below 20 knots. We prepared everything, hung the daggerboard from a halyard and in a calmer spot we slowed the boat right down and got down to it," said Martinez, both exhausted and satisfied.
"The operation went quite well and we had the daggerboard in position - what satisfaction! We were both exhausted, dead on our feet, drained and that's when we got the report that "Estrella Damm" was just over 10 miles to our stern. We'd managed to carry out the repairs without them overtaking us, so we were over the moon! It was like going a set up!" he added.

Transatlantic On A Raft
Elderly crossing - that's the tongue in cheek title 84-year-old Anthony Smith has given his Atlantic raft adventure.
Balloonist, travel writer and one-time TV presenter Smith set off this weekend from the island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands for the Bahamas on this raft made from recycled items. The hull of An-Tiki consists of four huge PVC water pipes aligned fore and aft.
A regular correspondent of ours, Jill Schinas, interviewed Smith for our next issue (March) and he told her: "Never been on a sailing boat before in my life - except for one little trip in a three-masted brig - so I really haven't a clue."
He is sailing with friends Don Russell, 61, David Hildred, 57, and Andrew Bainbridge, 57. Since Smith has no sailing experience he enlisted the help of a project manager who used to work for Sir Chay Blyth's Challenge Business to help design and supervise the building.
But the strange thing, says Jill, is that they have left without doing any sea trials. "Various people have expressed concerns about the vessel's ultimate stability," she says.

San Francisco Melges 24 World Championship 2013 Dates Announced
The San Francisco Yacht Club, the oldest yacht club west of the Mississippi, has for over a decade been the leading organizer of Melges 24 regattas on San Francisco Bay, hosting the Fleet's 2010 US Gold Cup, the 2011 Pacific Coast Championship and the North American Championship in 2012, as well as the annual finale of the Melges California Cup Series.

In 2011, the Farr30 international One Design Class will crown their European Champion for the first time during Kieler Woche. From 23 to 26 June their championship will be the highlight of the second part of the world largest regatta in Kiel.
Prior to that, competitors are already welcome for tune up and boat testing while the Pre-Europeans will take place from June 20-22 on the same race course.
In addition to that, the international class association offers a two-day-training at the days ahead with a Farr30 sailor from France.

6-Metre World Cup 2011 in Helsinki in August
6mR-class World Championship 2011 will be held from 5th August to 12th of August at the NJK-yacht club at Blekholmen in Helsinki. The semi-annual championship is expected to bring together a fleet of around 50 boats and 250 yachtsmen from around the world.
The SEB Six Metre World Cup 2011 held in Helsinki is part of the 150th anniversary of NJK-yacht club, Nyländska Jaktklubben. This same year Finland also celebrates its 150th anniversary of yacht racing history.
In Helsinki the championship will take place in two classes: the modern Six Metres (build after 1965) and the classic Six Metres (build before 1965). The majority of the Finnish fleet will compete in the classics division.
This will be the 19th Six Metre World Cup. In the year 2009 the WC was sailed in Newport, USA. There the winner in modern Six Metres was Sweden's Hugo Stenbeck with Sophie II, and in classics Canada's Eric Jespersen with Gallant. From Åland, Finland, Henrik Lundberg took silver in the classics with Fridolin. Both winners are America's Cup –veterans. The Finns have won the championship in classics three times, last in 2003. The Swedes on the other hand have mastered the championship in moderns.
The championship was last held in Helsinki in 1999. The Six Metres was an Olympic class from 1908 until 1952. Among the boats participating in this year's Helsinki WC are all top-5 boats from the Helsinki Olympics 1952.
The Six Metres in Finland add up to 40, and worldwide the registered boats add up to around 300. Following the Six Metre rating rule, each boat is different. The Six Metres are considered extraordinary beautiful and many highly esteemed boatdesigners are among the constructors, namely the late Olin Stephens from USA and Finland's Gösta Kyntzell.
