ORC Europeans Ta'Xbiex, Malta: Under brilliant blue skies and active seas today, the fleet of 38 boats from 11 countries started the 2023 ORC European Championship hosted by the Royal Malta Yacht Club with a brisk "majjistral" wind, the local term for breeze from the northwest that funnels between Sicily and Tunisia. This brisk breeze of 14-20 knots helped propel the teams in all three classes in a fast initial phase of their courses set for completion in 24-36 hours.

The 10 entries in Class A have a 186-mile course that from the start off Valletta first winds around the southern coast of Malta, rounds the small island of Filfla, then unwinds back to the east then northeast on a long leg towards a special purpose buoy set off the Marina di Ragusa at southern tip of Sicily. From there the Class A fleet heads southwest to a mark at the northwest end of the island of Gozo, where they then head southeast to round Malta to port, take a 13-mile leg past Valletta to Comino, then back to a picturesque finish line set in Valletta harbor between the Bastion and Tigne Point.

The 19 entries in Class B have a 151-mile course to sail which also included a tour of southern Malta, but without going as far as Filfla before heading off to Ragusa. From there they go directly to Comino without the lap around Malta via Gozo, do a lap around buoys east of Valletta, before heading to the finish line.

The 9 entries in Class C are racing a 140-mile course that is similar to the Class B course without the extra lap made east of Valletta.

The Long Offshore race may be tracked here

Once finished, race results will be posted at orceuro2023.com/results

Dick Carter Cup
A race where all the Dick Carter yacht designs are invited is due to be sailed at La Trinite sur Mer on the 11th of August. The race called Les Voiles de la Baie is organized by SNT. About 20 Carter designs are already registered and the man in charge of the Carter meeting would like the Carter designs owners in GB to be informed about that.

The organizers have been in contact with Dick Carter who informs that he is delighted to fly from the US to France to meet the owners of one of his drawings. He has asked us to help contact British and Irish skippers.

To celebrate the victory of Ydra 50 years ago, we invited all Carter yachts to the Dick Carter Cup on 11 August in Trinite sur mer. All boats must present an IRC certificates.

On the 120th, all the fleet gathered will sail in the bay for photographs. At night, crews can attend Dick's conference and a cocktail dinner.

Seahorse Sailor Of The Month
This month's nominees:

ORC Europeans Dylan Fletcher-Scott MBE (GBR))
The power of Seahorse may be joked about sometimes but never underestimate it… (and we’ll grab all the credit whenever we can). Last month we said that with the big wins Fletcher has racked up in foiling and other high-performance classes, and the modesty with which he does it, you’d have to be totally nuts if you are in charge of a Cup programme to let this one slip through your fingers. Thanks for showing faith in our judgement, Sir Ben

ORC Europeans Rosalin Kuiper (NED)
A good slice of the votes for Will Harris came with a health warning - should we not also similarly acknowledge the big part played in the Malizia dramas by Boris Herrmann’s young Dutch co-skipper. Also quite correctly praising the outstanding media ‘energy’ Rosalin Kuiper brings to the onboard coverage coming off the Monégasque Ocean Race entry. Well, we’re no heroes so we happily bow to the crowd. But keep up the fab comms, Malizia is way ahead in the race for media prizes,,,

ORC Europeans March's winner:
Will Harris (GBR)
‘The best sailor in the world’ – Wilma Juffermans (not quite yet, but worth a flutter – ed!); ‘That carbon dust must have itched for days’ – John Thorn; ‘A pity you can’t nominate the whole crew but Will can do it all anyway!’ – Conrad Colman; ‘Topper sailor to Ocean Race skipper, Figaro rookie title and a great chap. Talent, ability to learn it once, strong decision making, makes boats go faster. And will this advance my career without burning anyone else?’ – Charles Darbyshire.

Cup Spy : Swiss test AC75.. Update on Prelim Regatta #2 .. Glenn Ashby exit?
What happened in the Cup:

Alinghi Red Bull Racing sailed their AC75 off Barcelona after damaging the rudder box in March.

INEOS Britannia was the only team to sail a 40fter, enjoying a good session in Palma in fresh winds.

Two interviews in mainstream media with three times America's Cup winner Glenn Ashby claim that he will not be part of the ETNZ sailing crew for the 2024 America's Cup. (See commentary piece below).

The fortunes of the second America's Cup Preliminary Regatta continue to take some intriguing twists and turns.

Glenn Ashby to pursue other options:

Two interviews in mainstream media over the weekend with three times America's Cup winner Glenn Ashby claim that he will not be part of the ETNZ sailing crew for the 2024 America's Cup.

One claims he will maybe have a tilt at a world wind powered waterspeed record (which is about half the 225km/h record Ashby and ETNZ set in February, which has only just been announced). And that he may do another landspeed record to lift it by another 10km - a little hard to believe given that the team should now be focused on its 2024 America's Cup program.

It was clear in the excellent Land of Speed documentary that team boss, Grant Dalton was not pleased as to how long the team were staying in Australia waiting for a lake to dry, and that an end would have to be called in the near future. Ashby played for one last chance and got his weather window, set the record, and then in a piece of serendipity set a second record when they returned to pack up Horonuku for return to NZ.

As one who has run a practical sail making and development program for a couple of decades at least, geared mainly around apparent wind high performance classes (A-class catamaran), and a successful America's Cup involvement (2010, 2017 and 2021 America's Cups), Ashby provides a strong practical understanding of how high performance rigs work, and is a strong interface between the practical sailing and rig design teams.

All systems GO for 2023 Auckland Fiji Yacht Race
In just over a month's time, a fleet of enthusiastic cruisers and racers will line up for the start of the 2023 edition of the Auckland Fiji Race, hosted by Royal Akarana Yacht Club. There are two starts catering for a variety of boats with the first happening at 1300 hours on Thursday 1 June for cruisers and Division 2 race yachts, followed by Division 1 starting at 1300 hours on Saturday 3rd June.

Long-haul international offshore racing has been on the back burner for the last few years which saw the unfortunate cancellation of the planned 2020 event due to travel restrictions, however, all that is in the past, and the Auckland Fiji Yacht Race is back on the menu.

It's been a slow burn to get to this point, however, the organising committee is roaring ahead with plans for the race to start at the scheduled times, with sponsors now secured in what is set to be a fantastic race for those keen to take part.

Covering a distance of approximately 1,100 nautical miles, the Auckland Fiji Yacht Race is one of the most challenging and exhilarating races in the region. It will start from Auckland's Waitemata Harbour and finish at the entrance of Momi Bay before the fleet then make their way to Port Denarau Marina, providing competitors with breath-taking scenery and demanding navigational challenges.

Each boat will be fitted with a YB Tracker for the duration of the race to ensure that fellow competitors and on-shore spectators can follow the fleet in real-time.

Entries close on the 5th May.

Female athletes sought for new Crew4Gold talent search
The British Sailing Team and British Youth Sailing have joined forces to launch Crew4Gold - a ground-breaking new talent search to discover female athletes capable of becoming Olympic medal-winning 49erFX crews.

The 49erFX is the women's two-person, high-performance skiff at the Olympics, and considered one of the fastest and most physical of the ten classes.

We're looking for British females aged between 14 and 25 who are over 1.68m (5ft 6ins) tall, fiercely competitive and highly motivated to succeed to join Crew4Gold ahead of the summer season.

Crucially, you don't have to be a sailor to take part in Crew4Gold.

Crew4Gold is a deliberate move away from the historical results-based pathway into elite level sailing, focusing much more on the potential of someone to become a world-class athlete.

As such, the programme is open to anyone with the passion and drive to succeed at Olympic level.

Successful applicants will be trained by world-class coaches and support staff on and off the water with the help of the Andrew Simpson Foundation, the charity set up in memory of Olympic sailing legend Andrew 'Bart' Simpson.

Crew4Gold applications are now open, and will close on May 9.

British Marine's former HQ, Marine House in Egham has been rented out

The organisation's accounts for its financial year ending 30 June 2022 show the loss has been almost halved since 2021.

This has been attributed to several activities returning after the pandemic, including the partial return of the Southampton International Boat Show in 2021, increased demand for industry-specific training courses and the opportunity to exhibit with British Marine at international shows and trade events.

In addition, two new events were held in 2022 - the National Conference and the London Luxury Afloat boat show.

Looking forward, the organisation has secured a new 10-year license with Southampton City Council to continue operating the Southampton International Boat Show, with a full revamp of the event for 2025 being discussed.

Following British Marine's relocation to Southampton in 2020, a long-rental agreement of the company's former HQ, Marine House in Egham, was also secured in 2022 which will contribute positively to the accounts.

Some might say that it's absolute madness to risk wrecking an actual D-Jaguar in a road race. The Salvadori Cup at Goodwood last week, for instance.

Some would say that it's madness NOT to drive a race car in a road race. They are not static museum pieces, they're movable art.
