AON 2023 Etchells Worlds
Miami, Florida: Live to sail another day at AON 2023 Etchells World Championships.

That was the philosophy taken by organizers of the AON 2023 Etchells World Championships, which were scheduled to get underway Monday on Biscayne Bay. However, principal race officer Dave Brennan convened a meeting of the on-water management team first thing in the morning to review and discuss the daily forecast provided by class meteorologist Chelsea Freas Carlson.

After careful consideration, the Race Committee agreed the wise decision was to abandon racing on Monday to ensure none of the 63 boats or sailors sustained injury due to severe weather. “The long and short of it is the first thing we need to be concerned with is the safety of the competitors. With the line squalls coming through and lightning strikes, having everybody out on the bay as all this comes through is not prudent. It’s just not safe to send out 400 sailors with the chance of getting hit by lightning,” Brennan said after announcing the decision to the sailors on the front lawn of the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club.

Brennan spent several hours Monday morning tracking the approaching cold front and getting some analysis from Freas Carlson. Most alarming was the threat of severe thunderstorms with plenty of electricity and even the threat of waterspouts.

Steve Benjamin, the 2017 World Champion and a member of the class Board of Governors, expressed the opposing viewpoint.

“I’ve spoken to several competitors and we have a slight difference of opinion. My view is that we should have gone out and given it a try. I’d always prefer to sail than not sail,” Benjamin said. “I certainly recognize the weather risk; however, I often find the forecasters are often wrong. You never know what’s really going to happen, so you go out and try.”

At the same time, Benjamin took a diplomatic approach and professed respect for the decision-making of Brennan and other regatta organizers. “I see both sides of the coin. I think we all recognize the dangers and understand the Race Committee’s desire to keep everyone safe,” he said.

Two races are scheduled for Tuesday starting at noon.

Dragons are back in Cascais
After three days and a full program, with seven sailed races, the Australian Yeahnah team took the HM King Juan Carlos Trophy today, with 11 points.

The championship was disputed in Clube Naval de Cascais by eight teams, from five different nationalities, which had excellent conditions throughout the championship - there were three days of clear skies and shining sun and while the first two days had the famous champagne sailing conditions, Sunday there was room for light wind.

Yeahnah, Pete Cooke's team with Torvar Mirsky and the Portuguese Olympic sailor Frederico Melo in the crew, went on to win the championship, with 2 points of advantage over the Portuguese team Easy, of Michael Zankel with Diogo Pereira and João Matos Rosa, who ended up taking second place, with 13 points.

With 15 points and closing the podium, finished the also Portuguese team of Pedro Mendes Leal, Tanit Cabau, Pedro Rebelo de Andrade and Natali Alexandrova, who won the last race of the day, thus winning the Stavros trophy.

Also worth mentioning is the Irish team Cloud, of Jonathan Bourke, Conn Harte Bourke and Sam Gillivan who were the first Corinthians - the first crew without any professionals.

This was the 28th edition of the championship, that was established in 1995 when His Majesty King Juan Carlos I of Spain donated a trophy to Clube Naval de Cascais, to honor the place and the club where he learned to sail and compete.

Big boats alongside the small One Designs, reunited once again at the 19th edition of PalmaVela
The first major European event in the international regatta calendar is beginning its countdown. The 19th edition of PalmaVela, which for the third time running will be preceded by the Offshore Race, is preparing to host a multitudinous and extremely varied fleet with boats ranging from 30 metres in length, such as the imposing Wallycento, to the small One Designs that barely measure eight metres. Two extremes existing within the same event organized by the Real Club Náutico de Palma (RCNP).

The big boat fleet will begin racing on Thursday 4th May from 13.30h onwards, and if conditions permit, the Racing Committee aims to complete up to six races, including a minimum of two coastal races.

Divided into three classes, there will be a total of 23 One Designs competing in real time for the prestigious Baleares regatta title. Both the J80 class and the Dragons are now veteran divisions in the event, whilst the 6 Metre boats will be making their début appearance in the PalmaVela. It is their third competition at the RCNP following the Copa del Rye MAPFRE in 2018, and the recent Trofeo Princesa Sofía.

The One Design Racing programme includes a total of nine windward-leeward races, divided over three days of racing, and begins on Friday 5th May at 13.00h.

Progeny of America's Cup winners feature in NZ Junior sailing titles
Will Mason (Wakatere BC) and Matt Mason. Photo by Eduan Roos. Click on image to enlarge.

Mason The result sheets from the just concluded NZ Starling Nationals, and the Optimist Nationals which finished the week before, and January's iconic P Class trophies are punctuated with the names of the progeny of some of NZ's top sailors. Here's the story of one of them.

He’s sailed around the globe, competed in many of the world's most iconic yacht races, and lifted the America’s Cup four times - yet nothing has made veteran Kiwi sailor Matthew Mason prouder than witnessing his young son’s rare sailing feat over the weekend.

Fourteen-year-old Will Mason was on Saturday crowned the national champion in the Starling class, only five days after winning the Optimist national title.

He won four of 10 races in the Starling event at Manly Sailing Club, beating 49 other competitors despite only sailing the boat for the last three months.

Last Monday, Will also triumphed by 10 points in a 51-boat fleet at the Optimist nationals at Wakatere Boating Club.

The Starling is a popular singlehanded dinghy and is widely regarded as a transitional youth class for sailors up to 70kg.

At only 51kg, Will was one of the smaller boys in the fleet and had to battle his much bigger competition - and strong winds - on Friday. -- Eduan Roos

World ARC 2022 - Celebrations in Saint Lucia
Saturday 15th April was the final day of the second half of World ARC 2022-23, a unique edition of World Cruising Club’s rally in that on this occasion there was no annual “first half” of the round the world rally due to Covid. A stalwart group of participants came together in a smaller than usual group in Darwin, Australia in September last year for the passage across the southern Indian and Atlantic oceans and on to Saint Lucia, reigniting the rally spirit and re-starting their cruise in company with the support of WCC. Over the past eight months, covering some 12,000nm, this group has been bonded with many shared memories, magical moments and unique experiences, all the hallmarks of an unforgettable rally and forming friendships for life.

Yesterday marked the end of the World ARC 2022-23 in what was described by Avryl Broadbridge, Island Wanderer, as “the perfect way to remember the rally,” or by another as, “a fitting end to what has been an amazing rally.”

After two weeks of cruising the southern Caribbean from Grenada, the seven yachts finishing what had become known as World ARC 2019-23 had gathered at Marigot Bay Yacht Haven to re-group before a Parade of Sail northwards. The yachts formed up in line astern in reverse order of length overall with Celtic Star heading the column as they made passage along the coast, including a circuit of Castries Harbour, to cross the finish line in Rodney Bay, marking the end of their circumnavigations started with World ARC’s 2019, 2020 and 2021!

Camden Classics Cup
Camden, Maine: Registrations are rolling in for the 2023 Camden Classics Cup! 50 boats have already made their plans to attend this year's event. We're looking forward to a great weekend of racing, on-shore events, festive parties at the new Lyman-Morse facility, the annual Youth Regatta and the Parade of Sail around Camden Harbor.

We're particularly excited about our changes to the 2023 event. We've welcomed esteemed US Sailing race organizer, Peter Girard, to spearhead the race committee. He and his team have been hard at work on the Notice of Race and the courses. A new coffee bar, Whistling Whale, has opened on our docks to satisfy those morning caffeine cravings. We've moved our Saturday night party to allow for better flow, food and fun, while still being able to enjoy the beauty of Camden's Harbor's sunsets. Saltwater Classroom, together with the crew from American Promise, will be organizing a shore cleanup day. We're bringing in more vendors and sponsors to enhance our shoreside village experience, and much more!

Many thanks again this year to Stephens Waring Yacht Design, our dockage sponsor. Dockage will be included with your registration on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to vintage and classic vessels.
