Horonuku's Additional Record Run Of 225.58Km/H Revealed
Emirates Team New Zealand and Glenn Ashby's World Record Run of 222.43km/h in Horonuku was widely celebrated when achieved on December the 11th 2022, breaking the previous record of 202.9km/h by Richard Jenkins which had been unbroken for over 13 years.

But, as revealed in 'Land of Speed' the documentary covering the Emirates Team New Zealand land speed campaign, the new world record was relatively short lived as Pilot Glenn Ashby explains of the opportunistic window presented to the team.

"In February we were really coming back to the lake pack up the craft. We had to get Horonuku and the containers back to New Zealand. But a few days out, Clouds our Meteorologist indicated there was a possible weather opportunity, so we rattled our daggs and got to the lake."

We weren't sure if the conditions were going to come good, so we kept pretty quiet about it." said Ashby

Like the previous world record run in December, the required wind speed was only going to last for a matter of hours so the team had to be ready to roll. And right on dusk on the 24th February Ashby sailed Horonuku into the record books one more time clocking 225.58km/h.

"Pretty much two days before pack up, we've actually set a new benchmark for the world's fastest wind powered craft, superseding our own previous record by over 3km/h so it was a huge bonus."

Groupe Finot are back and certainly not following the herd, Yoann Richomme knows just what he wants, as does Damien Seguin, King of Miami… GBR's other Finn legend, lots of sailing time (and driftwood) in New Zealand… a dose of brutal honesty from Sir Ben Ainslie and old skills at the heart of new tech. All about the articulation
On AC40s there is plenty going on aloft as well as more obviously in the water... Bigger isn't always faster. In the 2013 America's Cup in San Francisco the speed and spectacle of 72ft wingmasted cats on foils turned heads like never before. But in the next Cup cycle in Bermuda the smaller AC50s were more nimble and in some cases faster. And they were already more consistent performers.

Seahorse build table - How did it begin (again)
It began with 'my perfect boat', but the perfect boat became rather popular. Now Dutch wizard Gerard Dijkstra is trying it all over again…

Classic Finn Organization
A group of United States East Coast Finn sailors have started a new organization called the Classic Finn Organization and have developed a website at classicfinns.org. Our goal is to revitalize older, often unused, Finns and get them out sailing.

Classic Finns are a great way to go sailing at a reasonable cost in a fantastic boat. This website provides information on available Finns and equipment, in addition to upcoming Finn events. These will include events supported by the US Finn Association as well as local clubs. We encourage sailors to save these great old boats and form fleets of classic Finns in their areas. While we are currently active in the Eastern U.S., we look forward to expanding to other areas that are interested in classic Finns. The US Finn Association has welcomed classic Finns to sail in their regattas with more modern boats.

Dave Hemenway lives in Eastern Connecticut and sails out of Thames Yacht Club in New London. He's been sailing and messing about in boats for his whole life and has recreationally sailed Finns on and off since the 1970s. His primary cruising boat is a Dickerson 36 yawl that he has maintained and improved for 35 years. Since his retirement from higher education, he has worked at Cappy's Boat Shop where he reports to his dog, Cappy. Dave founded the Classic Finn Organization (classicfinns.org), which supports sailing and repairing older classic Finns. Thames YC now has a fleet of four classic Finns that have weekly fun races and a formal regatta each fall. He can be contacted at .

Here is this weeks, weekly Sailing highlights show the World on Water, for April 14, 2023.

Good, reliable easter sea-breezes on the Bay of Palma allowed rapid progress to be made through an ambitious roster of Medal deciding contests as the record sized 52 Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca, Iberostar regatta, reached a thrilling conclusion.

As a matter of background, while we've had our viewers saying that the coverage of the teams in the 37th Americas cup is "Bland" all the teams have capsized their AC 40s. Not a good look.

Jon Emmett, British Olympic coach, interviews the wonderful new-mum Marit Bouwmeester and Micky Beckett the Princessa Sofia both 2023 Ilka 7 champions.

The Skate skiff class is one of Australias' popular dinghy designs and following the pandemic it is feeling a renewal in regattas and entries. The boats have adapted to new materials and are being updated all the time. Owners are up to and into their 70's. -- Geoff Waller

First 69F European Championship In Puntaldia, Sardinia, Italy
The 69F Class will organize the first 69F European Championship in 2023 and chooses to do so in the beautiful setting of Puntaldia, Sardinia, from September 17th to 24th, during the fifth and penultimate leg of the 2023 Algebris 69F Cup, the only open circuit for one-design, foiling monohull for crew in the world.

It is a natural step for the class, which has been on the international sailing scene since 2020 and has been organizing two successful circuits, the open circuit and the under-25 circuit - the Algebris 69F Cup and the Youth Foiling Gold Cup - in Europe and the United States since 2021.

The European 69F season is now just around the corner, with the first Grand Prix, Algebris 69F Cup Valencia Mar, opening the series from April 25-30 in Valencia itself, home of the iconic 34th America's Cup in 2007, and then continuing with five more stages, the penultimate of which, in Puntaldia, will coincide precisely with the first European 69F Class Championship.

The events of the Algebris 69F Cup will alternate with those of the 69F Youth Foiling Gold Cup, the circuit reserved for Under 25 sailors, which this year will feature several America's Cup teams, who will use the circuit as an opportunity to train and select their crews to participate in the 2024 Youth America's Cup; and the first Women Foiling Gold Cup regatta from August 28 to September 3.

Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy
The fourth edition of the Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy, one of Portugal's flagship sailing events, will unfold in the bay of Cascais from the 7th to the 9th of July 2023, with a record six classes across a variety of popular boats.

With three months to go until the start signal, the entry list is steadily growing, including well-known superyachts and record-beating VO65 boats from The Ocean Race. This year's edition also sees the introduction of the Finn class for the first time, as well as the Snipe South European Championship which currently includes entries from Portugal, Spain and Italy.

Established in 2020 to help raise funds for marine conservation, the entry fees for the sustainability-focused regatta are donated to ocean health projects by title sponsor the Mirpuri Foundation. And until the 8th of June 2023, all entry fees will also be sponsored by the Foundation.

The regatta gets underway on Friday, 7 July with the first of three days of racing in the Snipe South European Championship.

On Saturday 8 July ceremonial cannon fire from the Portuguese Navy will commence racing in the NHC, ORC, SB20, Snipe and Finn classes, as well as the popular Optimist class which the Mirpuri Foundation recognises as an important feeder class into professional sailing, with their sponsorship of the Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Academy run out of the Clube Naval de Cascais.

Sunday 9 July, the third and final day of the regatta will again see all 6 classes competing, after which the impressive Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy currently held by the 107ft superyacht Green Eyes, will be handed over at the popular awards ceremony hosted by the Mirpuri Foundation.

Australia's First Challenge for the Americas Cup
One of our most supportive contributors and readers, Milton Green sent an email this week, telling me about a program that he had come across in his archives, for the Australian challenge for the 1962 Americas Cup.

Perhaps almost 40 years after AUSTRALIA II's victory and with only 18 months to the 37th iteration of the event in Barcelona , readers might be interested in this fascinating program, which covers DAME PATTIE's predecessor's campaign in 1962.

There are two ways to read about the original Alan Payne designed GRETEL and her nemesis Philip Rhodes' WEATHERLEY.

Either you can click through the flip book linked here, having made the image full screen.

Or you can download the full PDF by clicking here (its 62MB)

ince her loss in 1962, GRETEL has had a chequered history. From 1973 to 1974 she belonged to "Yanchep Estates Pty. Ltd. In 1975 the "Southern Cross America's Cup Challenge Association, Ltd." owned the yacht, from 1976 to 1979 it belonged again to the "Gretel Syndicate" and in 1980 she was removed from Lloyd's Register. From 1982 to 1994 she worked as a charter yacht in the Whitsundays, later she was sold to Europe and sailed for many years in Italy. It was found here by the Robbe & Berking Classics shipyard and has being transported, unrestored, to the shipyard in Flensburg where she is now for sale

The next 6 months are about to get intense as the Mediterranean peak season swings into action, and HELM are on track for more than 1,000 departures this summer.

Greece and Croatia are increasingly popular, as they offer timeless charm and beauty. Skippered and crewed catamarans are driving much of this growth, as more and more families and non-sailors are tempted to try a holiday on the water.

According to an industry study published last week, Catamarans are already 58% booked across Croatia this summer, with June occupancy close to 80%.

Bigger and better than ever before, the 2023 South Coast & Green Tech Boat Show boasts its most impressive line-up of global power, sail and electric boating brands yet. If you're serious about buying, then this year's show at Ocean Village Marina, 21-23 April, is not to be missed.

Making its world premiere at the show is GT Yachts' GT325. Designed as Category A, this British built sub-10-metre modern cruiser has Tardis like proportions and, with the added flexibility of twin keels, she's ideal for coastal cruising with friends and family.

Displayed by SE Yachts, the electric Arcona 435 Mk II is making her show debut. Equipped with an Oceanvolt ServoProp 15 electric propulsion system, the Arcona 435 Mk II's 15kW electric motor is the equivalent of a 30hp diesel engine on a similar sized yacht.

"The Arcona 435 Mk II averages over eight knots which is fast for a 45-foot yacht," says Alasdair Marshall, Director of SE Yachts. "A higher performance monohull, like those in the Arcona performance cruiser fleet, is a huge advantage when sailing with electric propulsion as it sails well, even in light winds, and will start charging your battery through hydrogeneration sooner."

Visitors to the show can see the Arcona 435 Mk II with Oceanvolt electric propulsion on berth 15 alongside the new Arcona 385.

M.i.Cats will be unveiling the Fountaine Pajot Astrea 42 to the UK public for the first time at the 2023 South Coast & Green Tech Boat Show.

Sail maker and designer, Onesails will be showcasing its 4T FORTE™ composite sails, the first 'green sails' on the market. The membranes, made from exclusive Multi Micro Structure (MMS™) technology, and their assembly have been engineered for the highest standards in terms of environmental impact and recyclable options. Glues, resins and solvents have been replaced by heat fusion and the base polymer is 100% recyclable in a standard waste separation process. To find out more, visit the team on shoreside stand 29.

Construction has begun on a large superyacht hub in the Port of Amsterdam. The "Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus" will be the largest superyacht facility in the Netherlands when it is due to open in 2026.

The project is the brainchild of Wim Beelen, a businessman who made his fortune in the salvaging industry. In August 2021, his Larendael investment vehicle acquired 53 acres of land and private water in the Port of Amsterdam "to develop something unique."

It said the location – a rundown port area – would be turned into a 'Superyacht Campus' boasting half a dozen covered docks for superyachts of up to 200m (656ft) in length. Also, there will be a lift for yachts up to 80m (263ft). In all, the site is to offer deep-water space for 40 superyachts.

The complex is strategically located on a deep-water canal linking the Port of Amsterdam to the North Sea, 18.6 mi (30 km) away.

OC Sport Pen Duick, a subsidiary of the Groupe Telegramme specializing in the organization of the biggest French sailing races, now owns the Tour de Belle-Ile, a regatta that has become emblematic thanks to its tasty mix of amateurs and professionals, which line up in large numbers on the same starting line to complete a splendid 42-mile course around Belle-Ile-en-Mer.

Aurelie and Romain Pilliard, creators and organizers of the event, pass the torch to the OC Sport Pen Duick team, which will be responsible for orchestrating the next edition.

Created in 2008, this annual regatta has become the largest sailing race in France by the number of participating boats; it is one of the most recognized regattas in the world, along with the Tour of the Isle of Wight in England, the Bol D'or in Switzerland and the Barcolana in Italy.

Canceled due to the pandemic in recent years, OC Sport Pen Duick wishes to give itself time to work with all local actors, in order to provide an event that meets the expectations of participants, partners, the public and all stakeholders. engaged.

The next edition will therefore be held in the spring of 2024, and everyone will have to wait a little longer before seeing more than 500 sailboats on the same starting line and relive the intensity of the event.
