RORC Season's Points Championship
Since the 1940s, the Royal Ocean Racing Club has organised a season of multiple races and organised the first RORC Season's Points Championship in 2000 using the IRC Rating System. The series quickly became, and still is, the largest racing series in the world of offshore racing.

For 2023, buoyed by the 50th edition of the Rolex Fastnet Race, over 600 boats from across the globe are expected to be racing with the Royal Ocean Racing Club. The competition for every race is fierce, the trophies are part of the history of yachting, many dating back even further than the RORC, which was established in 1925.

The 2023 RORC Season's Points Championship began with the Rolex Middle Sea Race in October 2022, followed by the RORC Transatlantic Race in January 2023 and the RORC Caribbean 600 in February 2023. RORC Vice Commodore Eric de Turckheim, racing his NMD 54 Teasing Machine, has two overall victories to lead the 2023 RORC Season's Points Championship. From April, the focus moves back to Europe. The majority of the 12 remaining races will start from the Royal Yacht Squadron Line, Cowes, IOW. --Louay Habib

Newport, Rhode Island To Host North American Stopover Of The Ocean Race
The Ocean Race, often described as the longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world, is headed to the Ocean State for a stop in Newport, and a nine-day family-friendly celebration, May 13-21.

Sail Newport, Rhode Island's Public Sailing Center, along with the State of Rhode Island and 11th Hour Racing, will co-host the event at Fort Adams State Park. The Newport-based 11th Hour Racing is an organization that mobilizes sailing, maritime, and coastal communities with an innovative approach to inspire solutions for the ocean.

"The 2015 and 2018 race stopovers drew over 200,000 visitors to Newport and generated tens of millions of dollars in economic activity in Rhode Island," said Lieutenant Governor Sabina Matos, who led a press conference today about The Ocean Race Newport at the State House. "I invite Rhode Islanders to come see what it's all about in May. Take a day trip to the City by the Sea and take in the views of beautiful waters, accessible recreational spaces, and world-class sailing."

The race heads for Newport from Itajaí, Brazil, on April 23. The 5,500-nautical mile Leg 4 navigates north along the eastern seaboard with an arrival date in Newport of May 10-12.

Bristol, RI, sailor Charlie Enright on the Newport-based 11th Hour Racing Team skippers the only American entry in the race. Amory Ross of Newport is also participating as the team's onboard media crew member. Three other international men and women crew members complete the team of world-class sailors.

America's Cup: Sardinian Tourism Minister 'definances' hosting bid
The opportunity to host a second AC40 regatta between the six teams entered in the 2024 America's Cup has been declined by the Region of Sardinia (RAS).

The decision comes after six months of meetings, negotiation and provision of supporting documents between RAS and America's Cup Event Ltd (ACE).

A similar decision took just a month by the Catalonian port of Vilanova i la Geltru, which will host the first AC40 regatta over four days between 14-17th September 2023.

The Region of Sardinia were offered the same America's Cup World Series regatta that they had previously authorised to take place in April 2020, and provided the cost was comparable, the re-hosting decision should have been a straightforward exercise.

Late last week, international sailing journalist Fabio Pozzo, a well-connected America's Cup correspondent for the Italian newspaper La Stampa, reported in a series of three stories that the opportunity to host a second AC40 regatta between the six teams entered in the 2024 America's Cup has been declined. -- Richard Gladwell

What's Happening In The America's Cup
The announcement of the first pre-regatta to be held in the beautiful Catalan seaside port of Vilanova i la Geltru from the 14th-17th September 2023 was the month's big news from an organisational standpoint and certainly sharpened the minds and training regimes of all the America's Cup teams. Sailing will be aboard the team's AC40s in strict one-design mode and will offer visiting spectators and a global streaming audience a first glimpse of the teams going head-to-head in competition. Shoreside, Vilanova i la Geltru is getting ready to welcome the America's Cup world with ample viewing opportunities afforded across the waterfront with the racing taking place just metres off the port entrance. It promises to be a superb event and the first regatta on the journey to the 37th America's Cup in Barcelona in September and October 2024.

Emirates Team New Zealand

'Te Rehutai' the America's Cup winning boat of 2021 was dusted off, re-vamped and re-launched in March with a host of upgrades aligned to the new rules governing the 37th America's Cup. Four aero cyclor pods towards the stern, no backstays, and reconfigured crew positioning with the helm and trimmers forward were the obvious changes visible to the naked eye but a big reduction in overall weight and the very latest thinking on sail control particularly via the mainsail battening at the head transformed 'Te Rehutai's' sailing profile. Nathan Outteridge got his first taste of steering the 'big boat' with Pete Burling in the opposite pod and early sessions saw the Kiwis hit unconfirmed speeds into the 50-knot barrier in Auckland. The Defenders of the America's Cup are sailing well with Ray Davies leading the sessions and pushing hard before the team de-camps to Barcelona for the European summer.

Limited time left to enter very high calibre 2023 OK Dinghy World Championship in Lyme Regis
With an entry deadline of 28 April, there is limited time left to secure a place at the 2023 OK Dinghy World Championship, jointly sponsored by PRO-SET® epoxy and Ovington Boats. The championship is being held in Lyme Regis, UK, from 22-30 June. Just three weeks are left before entry closes and there are 129 entries from 11 nations pre-entered.

The level in the fleet is staggering, with arguably the most high-calibre fleet since the 1960s. The 2023 event has attracted an unprecedented number of top UK sailors to join the class, while pretty much all the previous world champions still sailing are on the entry list, which will be the biggest OK Dinghy World Championship ever held in the UK.

The entry list includes seven former world champions (Andre Budzien, Germany; Greg Wilcox, New Zealand; Thomas Hansson-Mild, Sweden; Roger Blasse, Australia) plus all British world champions (Nick Craig, Jim Hunt, Charlie Cumbley) and a huge number of top sailors from across the world. Cumbley will be defending the title he won in Marstrand, Sweden last year.

The international entry incudes seven from the top 10 at the 2022 worlds, plus current European Champion, Bo Petersen, from Denmark, Valerian Lebrun, France, Lars Johan Brodtkorb, Norway; and 2022 runner-up Niklas Edler, Sweden). Other British entries include Andy Davis and former Finn sailors Matt Howard and Andrew Mills, all sailing their first OK Dinghy worlds.

At least 15 sailors could be described as potential winners in a competition that will set Lyme Bay on fire in June. It is an incredibly strong field in a class that is getting tougher and more competitive every year.

For those who have already entered, payment of entry fees is due by 28 April. If you still want to be part of this amazing event, then entry does remain open until 28 April, but entry and/or payment after this date will be considered late entry and will only be accepted at the absolute discretion of the organising authority and you may be placed on a waiting list. -- Robert Deaves

RNLI Saved 164 Dogs in 2022 as Charity Reveals Latest Animal Rescue Figures
The RNLI has revealed an increase in the number of our furry friends it plucked from the seas in 2022.

Man's best friend made up the majority of the 209 creature callouts last year with the charity recording 164 dog rescues.

But there were also some surprises on the list of animals saved - in 2022 the charity was called upon to rescue 27 dolphins, two deer, a rabbit and even a snake.

The news coincides with this week's launch of the paperback of Saved from the Waves, which is filled with first-hand accounts of dramatic animal rescues and takes the reader on a journey with volunteer lifeboat crews as they face the dangers of the sea to save beloved pets, wildlife and livestock.

From dramatic and heart-rending dog rescues and a walrus that made a lifeboat station his home, to saving a stranded cat on the River Thames and a seal pup caught between rocks, the book demonstrates how RNLI crews stop at nothing to save lives.

The book shines a light on the necessity of animal rescues, not only to save the animals at risk of drowning but to prevent people putting themselves in danger when trying to rescue their furry friends.

The paperback edition goes on sale at the RNLI online shop and all good bookshops from Thursday 13 April, with royalties from all sales supporting the charity that saves lives at sea.

On watch, Bill Lynn
The President & Executive Director of the Herreshoff Marine Museum & America's Cup Hall of Fame in Bristol, Rhode Island, Bill Lynn is a passionate lifelong sailor... and he really likes to win races.

"I grew up in Rye, New York in the American Yacht Club junior sailing program in the old-school progression of Dyer Dhow, Blue Jay and Fireball (whose idea was that?)," says Bill, who resides in Marblehead, Massachusetts.

"I don't remember the Dyer bit too clearly, but it must not have been all bad because I got bitten by the racing bug, and I thought racing Blue Jays was awesome!"

"My parents used to tell a story about taking me out in their Star when I was a toddler, and they would put me in a laundry basket and slide it under the after deck so I couldn't climb out. Not sure whether it's really true, but DSS (Department of Social Services) might have something to say about it today."

Australia Pips Ireland's 'Emerald Challenge' for Youth & Women's America's Cup Invitation
Ireland's first-ever challenge for the Youth and Women's America's Cup sailing championship has ended without an invitation to Barcelona this Autumn.

Ireland's bid was pipped at the post by an Australian syndicate, where two clubs in Sydney combined their efforts and resources. With this and their recent commitment to purchase an AC40, they won the final invite for the Championships.

Emerald Challenge, after announcing the intention to win a bid for an entry to the Women's AC and the Youth AC back in November, had been 'feverishly working' on their Irish bid, as Afloat reported in January.

CEO & Skipper of Emerald Challenge Charles Cullen, along with the support of the Royal St. George Yacht Club, had been busy fundraising and building a campaign from the bottom up – no small task.

"It was with great disappointment to hear that our Emerald Challenge bid was unsuccessful. However, I am extremely proud. The team put everything into this project over the last few months", Cullen said in a statement.

"We weren't naive to how big of a challenge this bid would be for a small country when against much bigger nations. Yet, we wanted to try and give it the best effort we could", he said.
