Golden Globe Race: Ian Herbert Jones rescue underway
At 1540UTC Ian Herbert Jones SKIPPER PUFFIN rang the GGR Race Office on Iridium phone to advise that he was in extreme weather and confused sea, 50 knots, gusting over 70 knots, running under bare poles, trying to hand steer downwind. The yacht was laid over often by the force of wind and waves. There was a small amount of water down below. The line was bad and contact was lost.

10 minutes later Ian called again. He could not launch his drogue to keep Puffin stern to the waves. Conditions were extreme and he had been washed out of the cockpit twice. He had activated his EPIRB. Don McIntyre advised Ian that the extreme weather would last for at least another 5 hours, and that he should launch his drogue if possible, to assist down wind control on Puffin. Keeping the stern facing the wave is critical to avoid being rolled.

There was only 8 inches of water over the cabin sole and Ian said it was probably leakage through the cockpit, the manual bilge pump was working and Puffin was not sinking. The mast was secure and all safety equipment onboard was secure, although his electrical system was low on power.

Because he was unable to make contact with his Satphone, Ian decided to activate his EPIRB so that the Search And Rescue chain would be aware of his position and situation.

Ian experienced a tough night unable to cut the mast free because of storm conditions and is taking pain killers for injured back. Water ingress into the hull stopped.

Ian reports at first light his back injury is mobile able to work. Can climb ladders for evacuation, weather moderated to 4/5mtr sea and 25/30 kt wind.

Mast still over the side but not banging too much and he is now trying to cut free. Plenty of power for VHF , sat phone and YB3 , AIS is on and transmitting. He will test the engine later today to check if it is operational for manoeuvring.

SAR Puerto Belgrano Argentina and MRCC Taiwan coordinated the routing of three Taiwanese fishing vessels, the FA DA CAI, ETA 1700 UTC in addition to the ZI DA WANG, ETA 1900 UTC and YUH SHENG N°1.

While the GGR Crisis Management Team ( CMT) kept Ian informed of the developments in his rescue throughout the night, they were not receiving response and updates. He was however manually activating the "acknowledgment" button on his YB3 device, meaning he was conscious and informed of the latest developments, even if physically diminished.

At 0647 UTC GGR had confirmation from SAR Puerto Belgrano that a Taiwanese fishing vessel, the ZI DA WANG, 90 miles away from his position had been diverted to his position with an ETA at 1900 UTC the same day, earlier than the Fisheries Patrol boat Lilibet, 300 miles to his South that would arrive the next day.

UPDATE: Ian Herbert Jones rescued

First vessel on scene was F/V ZI DA WANG at 1830 UTC

Transfer of Ian Herbert Jones from S/V Puffin to F/V ZI DA WANG successful in 25k wind and 4mtr sea. Now bound for Cape Town. S/V FA DA CAI and S/V YUH SHENG N°1 released from rescue operation.

GGR wishes to thank MRCC Argentina, SAR Puerto Belgrano, MRCC Taiwan for their coordination of Ian's rescue and the Taiwanese shipowner for routing 3 of their vessels to Puffin's position.

Team Malizia Announces Sailing Crew For Leg 4 Of The Ocean Race
British sailor Will Harris will be Team Malizia's skipper for Leg 4 of The Ocean Race, taking over the role for the second time in the round-the-world race. New addition to the international team is French offshore sailor Christopher Pratt. He will replace Boris Herrmann who is, as planned, sitting out the race from Itajaí to Newport.

After Team Malizia's win in Leg 3 of The Ocean Race, there is an added desire to perform well in the next Leg 4 of the race. The international sailing team has climbed to second place in the overall ranking and is looking forward to pushing their Malizia - Seaexplorer in the race through the Atlantic to Newport, USA, starting on 23 April 2023.

The team will not have Boris Herrmann onboard - as planned from the beginning - and Will Harris will take over the skipper role. The team has also recruited Christopher Pratt (42) to join for this leg. The Frenchman comes with a wealth of experience having co-skippered Charal with Jeremie Beyou for four years, taking part in the 2019 and 2021 versions of the Transat Jacques Vabre and coming third in both races. Christopher has over 17 years of experience and also co-skippered on other well-known teams including Maître Coq and Banque Populaire, and worked closely with Vendee Globe 2018 winner Armel Le Cleac'h.

Christopher Pratt is well known to Nicolas Lunven and Will Harris, and will make a great addition to the performance elements of Team Malizia.

Chris Webb - The first great 18 footer champion
Chris Webb's Australian II & Billy Dunn's Kismet. Click on image for photo gallery.

Chris Webb Chris Webb was the most famous 18 footer skipper during the early period of the class. He was a legend and a major draw card every time he raced for the Sydney Flying Squadron (SFS), won four 'official' Australian Championships, 1913-14, 1923-24, 1924-25 and 1926-27, and four interstate events in the years prior to the first official Australian Championship in 1911-12.

He was born on 17 October 1866 and started his racing career as forward hand for his brother Charlie and won his first as a helmsman with a 14-foot canvas dinghy named Latona, in 1884. In later seasons he skippered the 'fourteen', Violet, to twelve wins, and eleven more in the 24 footer, Mantura between 1891 and 1893.

By 1903 he had won 100 races and been placed 118 times in 23 yachts of various classes, but his reputation as "the best-known, the most successful, and perhaps the most popular skipper of open sailing boats on the waters of Port Jackson" was gained in 18 footer races.

He owned few racing boats and was a 'jockey' who raced everything from 12 footers to 24 footers at many clubs. His skill and daring in the 18 footer Australian, from 1897 to 1903, made him a crowd favourite as Australian proved more than a match for the bigger boats.

Among the many victories Chris Webb achieved during his long and distinguished career in the 18s and other classes was victory in the Sydney Flying Squadron's first major race, sailing the 24 footer Mantura, in October 1891.

The Sydney Morning Herald of the time summed up the new club and its unique handicapping system. "When the boats are well handicapped as they proved to be on Saturday last, exciting finishes are the result, and the winner can be picked by any person watching the race. Taking everything into consideration, the opening race was a success. The winner on the day was the 24 footer Mantura, sailed off scratch by Chris Webb, who passed Mark Foy's Kannanook on the line to win by one second."

As a result of his successes in Australian, in 1905, W.M. 'Watty' Ford bought Arline, a boat built in 1903 by Billy Golding, and renamed her Australian II for Chris Webb.

Australian II was an immediate success and Webb won club championships with both the SFS and Sydney Sailing Club in the 1905-06 season, then dominated the class for the rest of the decade.

Webb won his last 'eighteen' race in Sydney, the Cock O' the Harbour, in March 1942 (aged 75), and died on 9 June 1948.

Race to Repair: Biotherm foils
The Biotherm team of technicians is in a race against the clock to repair their damaged foil ahead of leg 4.

The team has moved the foil project to a composite materials facility near Itajaí where specialists are grinding back the damaged material to find the 'good' part, which will be built up layer by layer with new carbon fibre.

Once completed, the repaired area should be as good as new.

But it is time-consuming work and the new lamination needs to happen in stages. The race is on!
