11th Hour Racing Team and Biotherm finish in Itajai
As skipper Charlie Enright put it, this wasn't the finish they wanted, but it was a massive achievement all the same.

He was referring to a third place result in Leg 3 for 11th Hour Racing Team, who battled increasing amounts of damage to their boat from the first moments after the start in Cape Town all the way through the finish line in Itajai.

At one point as the team approached the southern latitudes ahead of the scoring gate with damage to both rudders (the teams carry one spare) it wasn't clear they would be able to continue at all, or for how long.

But Enright and his crew kept bouncing back, finding repair solutions, and eventually gliding into Itajai in the pre-dawn glow on Wednesday morning. After a tough leg, the crew appeared extremely happy to reach shore.

Less than three hours later, with the morning sun beating down, it was Biotherm's turn to ghost across the finish line to claim fourth place. Like their counterparts on 11th Hour Racing Team, it was clear from the smiles on board that the team felt proud in its accomplishment of taking on the longest Leg in the history of The Ocean Race and rising to meet each challenge.

The race to be ready for Leg 4 is now underway. The boats are to be launched ahead of the Pro-Am races in Itajai in two weeks.

52 Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca by Iberostar
A day when the local Embat sea breeze came in on cue at 12-13kts allowed Mallorca's showcase 52 Trofeo Princesa Sofia to complete qualifying series for all classes, allowing tomorrow's Finals to be contested on schedule to decide who will compete in Saturday's titles decider.

The Bay of Palma was back to its sparkling best; speed, power and manoeuvres being tested today much more than the ability to read the changing breezes which prevailed through the two opening days.

For the top seeds, the preliminary, qualifying series are often little more than a warm up for the Finals and the medal deciding contests. But with the added pressure of Olympic selection looming as well as the vagaries of the breezes on the first days, it has not all been plain sailing for the big names.

As ever for the dinghy classes it is in Finals series where the level really steps up and the cream rises.

The Finals Series for the dinghy classes run Friday with all of the medal deciding races due on Saturday.

SailGP's 2023 and 2024 Seasons Revealed
SailGP's new season starts in less than three months with the Rolex United States Sail Grand Prix in Chicago on June 16-17, 2023 at the stunning Navy Pier precinct - an event that delighted large crowds when it made its debut in Season 3 last June. From there, the league will remain in the U.S. and head to the West Coast for a first-ever Los Angeles Sail Grand Prix on July 22-23. While it will be a debut for SailGP, Los Angeles is no stranger to world-class events and is due to host its third Summer Olympics in 2028.

Following the two opening U.S. events, the league crosses the Atlantic for the European leg of the Season 4 calendar - starting with the iconic riviera destination of Saint-Tropez, France, on September 9-10, where last year, Quentin Delapierre's home team set the all-time speed record of 99.94 km/h which currently still stands. Afterwards, the historical surrounds of Taranto, Southern Italy await on September 23-24, with the city returning to SailGP calendar after first appearing in Season 2.

The European event schedule concludes with the league's most economically impactful event to date, the Spain Sail Grand Prix, which takes place October 14-15, and once again is hosted by the vibrant city of Cadiz in the Andalucia region. Boasting the biggest spectator crowds of Season 3 - with over 50,000 fans cheering from the shorelines per day - a record 56.9 million USD was generated for the local economy.

Season 4 continues on January 13-14, 2024 with the Middle East Sail Grand Prix. While the location and title partner will be announced in May, the event will take place for a second time in UAE after a successful Season 3 debut.

Warsash Spring Series - Week 4
There was a feeling of deja vu. The wind in the N (NNE actually) and a forecast 10 knots. A bit like the previous week, but with a little more wind. It was much as forecast, but with about 15 knots for much of the time. So back to Hill Head buoy with the options of Royal Southern, Darling Buoy or a laid mark as the windward mark.

Having completed 8 races, the first discard has appeared and the series battles are becoming clearer. In IRC 1, Jiraffe leads The Bodfather by two points. In IRC 2 Triarchy leads Jybe Talkin', Chris Burliegh, by 2 points with Mojo Risin' just a point behind in third place. In IRC3 thing cannot be tighter with Betty and Quokka both counting the same number of firsts and seconds, and the tie only being broken in Quokka's favour by a better discard. J'ronimo is third overall with mainly thirds.

We now take a break for Easter, returning with the Spring Championships on the weekends of 15/16 and 22/23 April for IRC and Cape 31s in Black Group and the J/70 & SB20 Sportsboats on White Group. The remaining four Black Group Series races will take place on the Sundays. Boats can still enter to join the fun. -- Peter Knight

IMOCA strikes back
The Ultim's return does not have everyone celebrating, in particular the Imoca class are worried about being overshadowed by the Ultims. Indeed even before it was official, the class had prepared a reaction, via telephone discussions with the organizers, then a formal letter from their lawyer, Jean-Charles Scale, unveiled last weekend in Le Telegramme.

He recalls paragraph 3 of article II 2.2 of the sports regulations of the French Sailing Federation, which stipulates: "No article of the notice of race must be modified after its publication if the modification presents a risk of harm whatsoever to any competitor entered in the competition under the terms of the initial notice of race."

He therefore considers that "any modification of the initial notice of race in the sense of the integration of the Ultim class sailboats in the Transat Jacques Vabre 2023 would necessarily entail a certain financial loss for the registered members of the Imoca, given the substantial media impact that the disputed participation of the 3 or 4 Ultimates would generate [they should be five]."

And the lawyer concludes: "Consequently, I would like to inform you that any modification of the initial notice of race published in the aforementioned sense would constitute a violation of article II 2.2 3rd paragraph of the sporting regulations of the FFVoile and would be likely to lead to an appeal by competitors in the Imoca class who consider themselves to be prejudiced by the head of the integration of the Ultime class in this competition.

2.4mR World Championship
The 2022 2.4mR World Championship Para Sailing International Championship Regatta concluded after a week when, as Principal Race Officer Eric Robbins put it, "Mother Nature toyed with us."

The racing began in earnest on Tuesday, with four races in increasing breeze as Hurricane Nicole sauntered across the Caribbean. The 40-boat fleet, which includes both able-bodied and para sailors from 10 countries, pulled boats out of the water early on Wednesday morning, as it became clear that conditions were worsening. Many sailors took down rigs and tied the boats down in their cradles in anticipation of the blustery weather.

No races were held on Wednesday and Thursday. Hurricane Nicole brought sustained winds well into the 30-knot ranges, along with the higher gusts and an agitated sea-state. The 40-boat fleet retook the water early Friday morning. Light air caused the first start of Race 5 to be abandoned, but a small storm brought breeze up the bay from the south. Race 5 was shortened after that same small storm sparked lightning, sending the fleet back to the harbor. After a brief on-shore hold, the race committee sent the fleet back out onto Tampa Bay for Race 6, which -- after two general recalls under penalty -- got way before the 2 pm deadline.

At the finish of Race 6, racers were permitted to discard their worst finish, which the overall and para class winner, Dee Smith of the United States did not need. His throw-out was a third, permitting him to keep five bullets for the win.

The regatta is scheduled to for Finland next year.

Far East Boats, one of the biggest sailboat builders in China, has unveiled its first electric catamaran equipped with ePropulsion's integrated propulsion system.

The boatbuilder said that the FAREAST 42C combines comfort with the added advantages of all electric motors - quiet performance, zero-emission and efficient propulsion.

FAREAST 42C

The 42 foot catamaran was designed by internationally renowned boat design firm, Simonis Voogd Design.

It adopts a streamlined design and uses extra-long, built-in plexiglass portholes to allow passengers to enjoy a 360° unobstructed view in the saloon and greater natural light in the cabin.

It's powered by a pair of ePropulsion 20 kW electric motors. The battery system uses lithium iron phosphate batteries and up to four batteries can be connected, with a total capacity of 188.41 kWh.

The maximum battery life can reach 20 hours, with a range of up to 100 nautical miles in pure electric propulsion mode. All batteries are equipped with an ePropulsion Battery Management System that can monitor the voltage and temperatures of individual batteries in real-time, as well as provide an automatic equalisation function.

HH44-01 is slated for delivery in just a few short months, with subsequent hulls following closely behind. With 35 hulls sold and the first 11 already in production, the HH44 has surpassed expectations and is poised to make waves when she debuts this Fall. The HH44 is expected to be a nominee in the Boat of the Year, European Yacht of the Year, and Multihull of the Year competitions. In anticipation of a flurry of interest and new orders, the HH yard in Cebu will be coming online this month, allowing for simultaneous production lines and a significantly improved production outlook. We are excited to announce that current lead times for new builds have been reduced by an entire year. To learn more about current availability and pricing, please contact

The fifth and final episode of the HH44 Design Series is live. In this episode, James and Paul Hakes compare the two versions of the HH44, the Ocean Cruising and Sport Cruising models. They go into detail about the many ways the HH44-OC, our "cruisiest" and most price-conscious model, shares the same design ethos and construction techniques as our all-carbon, luxury performance models, far surpassing the build quality, finish, reliability and sailing characteristics of any comparably priced production catamaran on the market. They also examine the fully loaded HH44-SC version, with carbon mast and longeron, daggerboards, EcoDrive, massive solar array, and more, all standard, further differentiating it from the crowd.

Galatea: Her keel was laid in 1899 and originally rigged as a yawl, she continues to sail, race and look fantastic as a cutter rigged sloop, sailing the beautiful waters of Grenada and the West Indies.

Working with Jeff Fisher our agent in Grenada, we built the classic cross cut jib and mainsail in balanced Challenge Sailcloth for good bias stability and very good UV to accommodate the many available sailing days.

Galatea

Mainsail leech strength was dialed up with the addition of the two ply which has a soft curving leading edge to seamlessly transition into the main body fabric. We added one full batten to stabilize the upper third of the main and provided an 'up and over' leech for ease of adjustment. The biggest single difficulty was locating bronze external slides to mate with the large original track. Fortunately Bristol Bronze near Newport, Rhode Island still has molds for many of these slides from a bygone era and we were able to replace with new!

Integrating New Technologies into Traditional Boatbuilding, the DORIS Restoration Project

Adam Langerman of Langerman Designs and technical committee member explains his role in the restoration of DORIS #625, a 1905 Herreshoff Cutter currently in the shop of Snediker Yacht Restoration.

doris1905.com

Celebrated French yacht designer Philippe Briand is exciting to unveil a new 60m ketch concept, dubbed KAZE. Comfort under sail and huge volumes below deck are the mainstays of the design, which aims to deliver a fabulous quality of life aboard. Renderings just released show the sleek, balanced lines and low-profile coachroof of a thoroughly modern-looking yacht.

Briand firmly believes that a designer has to be focused on the lifestyle component especially on a big 60m sailing boat by sharing the sail area between two masts. But also capable of passing beneath the Bridge of the Americas on the Panama Canal.
