Challenges for all at the 52 Trofeo Princesa Sofia
Shifting wind directions and big changes of wind pressure again taxed competitors and race organisers alike as Mallorca's giant 52 Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca by Iberostar assumed its full size and shape when all ten Olympic classes took to the racing waters over the course of a very long day on the Bay of Palma.

With many nations using this regatta as an observed or even a one-off, first past the post selection event for this summer's Olympic test event the stakes are considerably higher than one year ago. A strong start to the series is more critical than ever particularly in the classes where countries have several athletes or crews chasing. Indeed for many reigning Olympic and World Champions their selection still has to be earned.

The potency of Germany's close knit squad of 470 Mixed sailors is enviable. Winners of last October's 470 Mixed world title with a day to spare, Luise Wanser and Philipp Autenrieth, made a strong start to their challenge with a fourth and third to top the class ahead of their their compatriots, husband and wife partnership Malte and Anastaysia Winkel who are second by a single point.

Olympic medallists started safely in the ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 fleets. The Netherlands' triple medallist Marit Bouwmeester tops the Womens' fleet whilst last year's Men's class winner GBR's Micky Beckett in second today, is sandwiched between Croatia's 2016 silver medallist Tonci Stipanovic who leads and Matt Wearn of Australia the reigning Olympic champion.

France's Kevin Fischer and Yann Jauvin made their mark in the 49er fleet with a pair of wins in the yellow fleet replicating the opening of their compatriots Erwan Fischer and Clément Pequin who went on to win the class.

With the programme over the first two days compromised by the weather the organisers need a consistent Wednesday to get qualifying series back on track.

Racing continues through April 8.

Exciting career opportunities at A+T Instruments
A+T Instruments A+T design and manufacture very high quality performance instruments for the high-end yacht market of Superyachts and race boats. In its first few years, it has developed a full range of instruments, displays and sensors fitted on over 500 of the world's largest and fastest yachts. Our overriding goals are very good support and service.

We are continuing to expand by building our sales and support team with two senior positions:-

Head of Technical Support; a strong technical knowledge of marine electronics and good knowledge of superyachts and race yachts is needed, with opportunities to visit and sail at major regattas world-wide.

Head of Sales; to expand our growing reputation and product range to the wider market of refit & new-build yards, electronics dealers, captains and project managers. Some sales experience would be helpful and knowledge of the market necessary but not deep technical understanding. This position may well suit a captain or engineer wanting to come ashore.

A+T is based in Lymington,UK and some time there would be needed. Both roles need subtantial travel particularly to major yacht hubs and offer competive salaries. Great opportunites to build senior management roles in an innovative and growing marine company.

Cup Spy Apr 3: USA capsizes offshore, Brits, Kiwis and Swiss have solid test days
Four teams sailed on April 3 out of Auckland, the Med and Pensacola. INEOS Britannia got back into serious testing in T6 with its W foil. The Kiwis sailed their AC785 in a big breeze out of Auckland. USA capsized offshore, and moved back into the Bay. The Swiss sailed their AC40 out of Barcelona in lighter winds. Their dry tack/gybe stats were lower than the standard of others - but may have been a function of the lighter winds.

What happened in the Cup - April 3, 2023:

- Emirates Team New Zealand sailed their AC75 out of Auckland in an 18-22kts SW breeze

- INEOS Britannia sailed their LEQ12 test boat out of Palma.

- American Magic sailed off Pensacola in their AC40 One Design

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing sailed out of Barcelona in their AC40 One Design.

- Luna Rossa did not sail, and last sailed their LEQ12 test boat on March 25. They are believed to be in an upgrade phase on the test boat.

- No further news from the Orient Express Team (formerly K-Challenge).

Rolex China Sea Race
Three out of the 19 yachts participating in the 2023 Rolex China Sea Race feature father and son crews racing together that will make the Race all the more memorable.

Andrew Pidden, owner and skipper of Juice, has not one but two of his sons on his crew. Describing his sons, Tom and Matt as "our secret performance weapons", both young men will be an integral part of the 6-man crew onboard on the 10m J99 flyer.

Since taking up sailing with his father in 2019 onboard the one design Dragon class, Pidden's son Matt has been eagerly awaiting for the return of the China Sea Race and is very excited to finally take part this year having recently taken part in the Clipper Race which ironically left from Subic Bay after the Covid pandemic shut the race down for 2 years.

No stranger to the China Sea Race, father son duo Phillipe and Cosmos Grelon - are racing double-handed on a Beneteau Figaro 3.Their previous foray into the world of double handed racing saw this dynamic duo previously competed in the 2018 edition of the Race and they will be ones to watch in the overall standings as they push themselves over the course. Their innovative yacht is the first production one-design monohull fitted with foils

On board Shenton Drew's Swan 53 will be father son combination, Harvey and Bassie Jessop. Both of them came into the sport eight years ago and have previously competed in the China Sea Race on board Wonderwall, taking 2nd place in IRC cruiser division. This year they will have their father/son bonding aboard Athena.

Another family combination joining this year is Shenton Drew, skipper of Athena sailing together with his father-in-law, sailing legend Roland Lennox-King, who was past owner of Reverie, which was the first boat to ever win the China Sea Race in the inaugural Race in 1962.

This 565nm Category 1 Offshore Race is run under the auspices of RORC, and takes competitors from Hong Kong, China to Subic Bay in the Philippines. The race starts April 5.

Haven Knox-Johnston Sponsored Yacht to Take Part in MailASail Azores And Back Race 2023
The Haven Knox-Johnston crew are proud to announce that their sponsored yacht, Haven-KJ Enigma skippered by Ian Braham, will be competing in the MailASail Azores and Back Race 2023 (AZAB).

Established by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club in 1975, the AZAB is held every four years and is a two-leg 2,400 nautical mile Category 1 ocean yacht race from Falmouth in Cornwall, across to the port of Ponta Delgada on the Azores Island of São Miguel, before returning back home to the UK. It was originally established as a more cost-effective and less time-consuming alternative to the OSTAR transatlantic race, and therefore provides more people with the opportunity to get into offshore racing. The first leg of the race starts from Falmouth on 3rd June, with the return leg scheduled to start on 20th June from Ponta Delgada.

Haven-KJ Enigma is a 1992 MG 346, designed by Tony Castro. Skipper Ian Braham has been helming and skippering yachts for the last 30 years. He races regularly at Cowes Week and has competed in every Round the Island Race since 2004, taking several class wins over the years. Having previously taken part in the Fastnet offshore races in Enigma, in 2011 and 2015, he decided to move onto his next challenge and, along with teammate Peter Eyre, has committed to AZAB 2023. It will be Ian and Peter's first time competing in the AZAB race and their first time racing offshore two-handed.

Haven Knox-Johnston will be following Ian's journey from preparation to post-race, sharing the highs and lows of his journey, top racing tips and charting his progress throughout the race.

12th Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe: Full Debrief
With a record 138 solo sailors at the start line for the transatlantic race, 103 made the finish. There were six different classes and therefore six winners: Charles Caudrelier - Maxi Edmond de Rothschild, in Ultim 32/23, Erwan Le Roux - Koesio, in Ocean Fifty, Thomas Ruyant - LinkedOut, in IMOCA, Yoann Richomme - Paprec Arkea, in Class40, Loic Escoffier - Lodigroup, in Rhum Multi, Jean-Pierre Dick - Notre Mediterranee - Ville de Nice, in Rhum Mono. The race between Saint-Malo and Pointe-a-Pitre record dropped under seven days for the first time, now at 6 days 19 hours 47 minutes and 25 seconds or the winner Charles Caudrelier.

And the media return also set records: Nearly 2 million viewers watched the start on November 9 despite it being postponed for 3 days for the very first time in the history of the race, there were around 1,100 accredited journalists, there were 5 million unique visitors on the official site and 167,000 downloads of the official application. That equates to a total of around 266 million euros in media coverage, meaning the event was one of the most followed French sporting events... These figures are worth noting but most of all the huge popularity of the event is underlined on the docks before and during the start in Saint Malo.

There were around 1.5 million visitors to Saint Malo and the immediate area over the thirteen days the village was open. The Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe was one of the biggest French sports gatherings of the year 2022. Attracting, hosting, informing and entertaining a bigger number of visitors was one of the core targets of the City of Saint-Malo and OC Sport Pen Duick, the organizer. Hence the increased area of the village, from 50,000 to 70,000 m2 which required an overall overhaul of the site ergonomics and circulation through the event space as well as the creation of new points of interest, including the Rocabey area with the Big Wheel CIC - Le Telegramme.

Herreshoff wants your old sails!
The Herreshoff Marine Museum is working with a partner to create a line of luxury products made from recycled vintage sails and marine hardware. A portion of the sales of these products will go to the museum to support expanded programming. If you have older sails that you no longer want taking up space in your basement, attic or garage, HMM would like to help you get rid of them. They can pick them up or make arrangements for them to be delivered to Bristol Rhode Island.

Classic Rating Formula Divisions
Sailboat racing is at its best when participating boats are divided into groups of similar size, age, and type. Toward this end, all boats racing under CRF are assigned to a Division before their CRF Certificate is issued. All Division assignments are made at the discretion of the CYOA Technical Committee based on the following Division criteria and intent definitions. While some individual regattas may group boats based on other factors for racing, the assigned division on a certificate is what will score boats wishing to enter the Classic Yacht Challenge Series.

The divisions:

Vintage
Classics
Modern Classic
Spirit of Tradition
Contemporary
