Duel remains for leg 3 podium position
With leg 3 winner Team Malizia and second-place finisher Team Holcim-PRB safe in Itajaí, the battle on the water for third place has closed up dramatically over the past 24 hours.

Paul Meilhat's Biotherm crew has realised an incredible gain on 11th Hour Racing Team over the past 24 hours, making up nearly 100 miles on the leaderboard. The pair are separated east/west by about 80 miles, but in terms of distance to finish are now virtually tied.

Both crews are showing incredible resilience in the face of adversity as each team has suffered more than its share of damage in the five weeks of racing to date. A race for third place isn't the race they were dreaming about when this leg started in Cape Town.

The weather isn't ideal for making fast progress to the finish - light to moderate winds, upwind - but should provide for some good racing.

All of the teams have lengthy work lists for their boats, and 11th Hour Racing Team and Biotherm are no exception. Their technical teams will be looking on with envy on Monday as the Team Malizia and Holcim PRB boats are now out of the water and work begins in the technical zone at the Ocean LIve Park.

The sooner Malama and Biotherm arrive, the sooner the 'race to repair' can begin.

Opening day programme at 52 Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca by Iberostar
After Mallorca had delivered more than two weeks of great winds and weather which were perfect for pre-regatta training, the 1259 athletes from 66 nations at the 52 Trofeo Princesa Sofia Olympic classes regatta had to endure an ultimately frustrating opening day of unsettled, changeable winds which badly affected the scheduled programme.

Racing was scheduled for the ILCA 6 and 7 fleets, the 470 Mixed and the Men's and Women's iQFOiL fleets. But only one part of the Men's iQFOiL fleet managed to complete two races and the Men's ILCA 7 Yellow fleet finished one qualifying heat. The second race for the iQFOiLers was badly affected as the wind dropped away. Other races for the dinghy fleets had to be abandoned as the breeze faltered and shifted in direction when a bg rain cloud drifted over the arena.

After an initial delay in the morning waiting until the offshore gradient breeze dissipated, the southerly winds did come in, puffing up to more than 12kts at times. It all looked very promising. But the thermal breeze could not sustain itself and the foiling windsurfers suffered a long, slow, semi-sunken drift back to Can Pastilla.

A period of rain during the mid-afternoon did all it could to dampen the enthusiasm at this huge, 2023 curtain-up gathering of all ten Olympic classes which will compete at the 2024 Olympic regatta in Marseille.

Tuesday should see the other fleets join the fray when the full magnitude of this record breaking entry should be evident with competition over all eight course areas.

Exciting career opportunities at A+T Instruments
A+T Instruments A+T design and manufacture very high quality performance instruments for the high-end yacht market of Superyachts and race boats. In its first few years, it has developed a full range of instruments, displays and sensors fitted on over 500 of the world's largest and fastest yachts. Our overriding goals are very good support and service.

We are continuing to expand by building our sales and support team with two senior positions:-

Head of Technical Support; a strong technical knowledge of marine electronics and good knowledge of superyachts and race yachts is needed, with opportunities to visit and sail at major regattas world-wide.

Head of Sales; to expand our growing reputation and product range to the wider market of refit & new-build yards, electronics dealers, captains and project managers. Some sales experience would be helpful and knowledge of the market necessary but not deep technical understanding. This position may well suit a captain or engineer wanting to come ashore.

A+T is based in Lymington,UK and some time there would be needed. Both roles need subtantial travel particularly to major yacht hubs and offer competive salaries. Great opportunites to build senior management roles in an innovative and growing marine company.

Ultim Class and SVR Lazartigue Bury The Hatchet
The General Assembly (AGM) of the Ultim 32/23 class took place on Friday in Paris. There the class announced the inclusion now of the SVR Lazartigue team which has finally agreed to modify François Gabart's trimaran to comply with the rule. A four-year calendar has also been unveiled which includes the return of the Transat Jacques Vabre this year, upsetting the Imoca class. Tip & Shaft tells you more.

In many senses this should be the end of a soap opera that has lasted a year and a half, fuelling many a heated debate on the pontoons and indeed in the courts. The Ultim 32/23 class held its General Assembly this Friday and cited "an opportunity to ratify the decision to welcome SVR-Lazartigue into the membership following an agreement that will allow it to obtain its measurement certificate ", as was indicated by a press release, sent shortly before 1500hrs French time Friday.

While François Gabart and his team succeeded last year in getting authorized to take the start of the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe, until Saint Malo the two parties still held their opposite positions as to the compliance of the VPLP design with the class rules, and in particular with article 3.11 of the OSRs of World Sailing (see Tip and Shaft's previous article).

Rex sets new record in Pittwater to Coffs Harbour Yacht Race
Dale Mitchell and his crew on Rex, the ORMA 60 multihull from Queensland, broke the multihull record in the 2023 Pittwater to Coffs Harbour Yacht Race - by 5 seconds - it seemed to suit the occasion - April Fools' Day!

It suits the occasion because the pre-race weather forecast spelt disaster as far as records were concerned. However, Mitchell and his crew worked hard and took all available opportunities in the Royal Prince Alfred's 226 nautical mile race.

Rex and the crew are sailing to Brisbane to undertake routine maintenance ahead of Easter's Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race, where they will try for another record.

Andoo Comanche (John Winning Jr), the super maxi skippered in this race by Iain Murray, finished the race at 8.46.40am, in 19hrs 46mins 40secs. The Rolex Sydney Hobart record holder finished outside the record of 17hrs 10 minutes 31 seconds record set by Peter Harburg's Black Jack last year.

Iain Murray skippered the boat in John Winning Jr's absence. "The first three hours of the race were slow and frustrating and they pretty much cost us a chance at the record. After that, it was slow but enjoyable sailing - full moon, clear skies, crisp night," Murray said as the 100 footer headed back to Sydney. -- Di Pearson/RPAYC media

Refinements to Classic Rating Formula for 2023
Each year, the CYOA Technical Committee does an in-depth review of the Classic racing held during the season just completed. Issues such as participation trends, race management, and class assignments are all of interest to the group, but an especially close look is always taken at whether or not CRF ratings accurately reflect actual on-the-water performance. The obvious goal being to equitably rate a full range of boat sizes and types over a variety of conditions, and while this is a tall order given the diversity of the diverse Classic fleet, during the 2022 season the racing was good and the ratings seemed reasonably fair. As evidence of this, similarly, focused racing teams like Dorade, (iconic 1929 S&S 52), Leaf (1944 Luders 24), Marilee (1926 Herreshoff NY 40), Blackfish (2017 49 ft SOT), Siren (1936 S&S NY32), and Bijou II (1937 Reimers 30 sq metre) seemed to be very closely matched on the race course despite being radically different in size, age, and general characteristics.

Still, there is always room for improvement, and performance vs rating takeaways from the 2022 season included the following:

- Race-oriented boats with high stability (eg 12m's) continued to be advantaged
- Boats with high Disp/Length ratios (e.g. CCA and Universal Rule boats) appeared disadvantaged
- Boats with low SA/Disp ratios (again CCA and Universal Rule boats) appeared disadvantaged
- Boats with deep rated draft (especially via ctbrd extension) appeared disadvantaged
- Square head mains faced 'double jeopardy' with both 1.15 rig factor applied AND main girths assessed

Given that each of these characteristics is directly addressed by CRF 2022, it might seem easy to make suitable adjustments to them for CRF 2023, but it most decidedly is not. In fact, it is extremely difficult to make a change to the rating formulae and/or factors in one area that doesn't result in unintended consequences in another, that might upset the current competitive balance across the fleet. -- Jim Taylor, CYOA Technical Committee Chair

Industry News
This past Friday in the presence of Didier Tabary, CEO of the Kresk group, owner and title sponsor of the trimaran. "Didier Tabary is now administrator of the Ultim class, with the possibility of participating in discussions and decisions, since he now has the right to vote like the other five members, this is a major point", says Patricia Brochard.

She also announces "a change in the class rules governance system", before specifying to Tip & Shaft: "We are going to create a committee of three people, whose names will be revealed soon, that the measurers and the teams will be able to consult for any question relating to the rule, and whose decisions cannot be called into question."

The other major subject of this meeting was the adoption of a four-year calendar, with in particular the 24h Ultim every year, the Finistère Atlantique every two years, Lorient-Les Bermudes Lorient in 2027 and two new crewed events, the Route des Phares in 2024 (a round trip from Lorient to Bordeaux), and the Med Ultim in 2025 in Mediterranean Sea.

And the big news of the day is that The Transat Jacques Vabre is now also on this program until 2027, including this year, which was not initially the case, due to the proximity of the Arkea Ultim Challenge-Brest, the solo race around the world.
