The Joy of Victory and the Pain of Defeat with America's Cup helm Dean Barker
Dean Barker This month, Shirley Robertson's Sailing Podcast hosts one of the sport's most recognisable talents as New Zealand's Dean Barker talks to double Olympic gold medallist Robertson about a career spent chasing the illusive America's Cup.

From his formative years growing up in Takapuna, Auckland, Barker was soon sailing at a high level, and was inspired in no small part by the likes of Russell Coutts and the generation of remarkably talented New Zealand sailors making their presence felt on the global stage. Barker discusses these early days through to the moment when Russell Coutts asked him to helm the final match of Team New Zealand's successful Cup Defence against Luna Rossa in New Zealand...:

"It was quite incredible, it was something that I will never ever forget, just having the chance to be a part of it was pretty special....but to be on the boat when we crossed the finish line...it was a huge weight off the shoulders...it was the first time I had touched the Cup and it was the start of a pursuit of trying to do that again."

This edition of the podcast is in two parts and is available to listen to via the podcast page of Shirley's own website - shirleyrobertson.com/podcast or via most popular podcast outlets, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcast and aCast. The podcast is produced and written by Tim Butt - for further enquires, please contact .

Double-Handed Racing in the Rolex China Sea Race
Shorthanded sailing has become increasingly popular in recent years during the Covid era and also partly in credit to the Mixed Two Person Keelboat Offshore Event having once been proposed as the 10th sailing event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

This year two local teams from Hong Kong will be joining the double-handed division in the Rolex China Sea Race, which departs 5 April from Hong Kong.

Father and son team, Philippe and Cosmas Grelon were the sole double-handed entry in the 2018 edition of the Rolex China Sea Race. They made the 565nm crossing from Hong Kong to Subic Bay in the Philippines in just over 82 hours; placing them second in their division on their 35-foot boat Decathlon Aya. This time they will participate again in the double-handed division in their second and probably their last China Sea Race together.

The father-son duo will compete on a Beneteau Figaro 3. This innovative yacht is the first production one-design monohull fitted with foils, which is said to greatly enhance its speed and stability.

The duo recently delivered the boat from its base in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and the journey to Hong Kong took the team 44 hours in fairly good weather conditions, and they clocked a top speed of 18kts under spinnaker.

The other double handed entry for the China Sea Race comes in the form of Taiwanese boat, Daybreak, a Taswell 56, a Bill Dixon-designed fast ocean cruiser built by Ta Shing shipyard with Ryan Mann and Casey Benjamin's on board for their first Rolex China Sea Race. Skipper Ryan Mann is an experienced short-handed sailor having clocked up over 8500nm in and around Southeast Asian and Australian waters.

His good friend and co-skipper for the event will be Casey Benjamin who regularly sails his own 46-foot yacht shorthanded in and around Hong Kong. Together with Mann, this duo will embark on the 565nm race putting their wealth of experience on the line to be tested by the conditions thrown up to them in the Rolex China Sea Race.

Discovering the submerged science of Britain's home waters
David Bowers co-wrote the standard textbook for students of oceanography, but he's often felt the science of the seas would be interesting for readers who aren't scientists. Hence his new book, Home Waters, a fascinating and original journey around Britain to look at how the waters that surround us (even if we reckon we're inland) have defined the country – and decided the course of its history – for thousands of years.

Can there be a better way of travelling overland from London to the north of Scotland than on the magnificent Caledonian sleeper? The train leaves Euston in the evening, clicks and clacks its way through the towns and villages of eastern England and Scotland, and brings you, refreshed from a good night's sleep, to Inverness in time for breakfast the next morning. It is Britain's own mini-version of the Orient Express. From Inverness, my wife and I drove the short distance along the A82 past Urquhart Castle to Fort Augustus at the south-western end of Loch Ness. On the day of our trip, the sun was shining and the red and gold colours of the trees around the loch were at their brilliant Autumn best. It was a wonderful sight.

It was here at Fort Augustus, over 100 years before our visit, that a small group of scientists, aided by the monks of the nearby abbey, discovered something completely new and surprising about the way that water behaves. The scientific party had come to the loch to carry out some routine water temperature measurements. If they had stuck to their plan, the work would have made a small footnote in history, but they saw something unusual in their measurements: something that needed accounting for. One of the team – ER Watson – persisted in turning the problem over in his head until he had come up with a plausible explanation of what they had found. His idea would forever change our perception of the way that water moves in enclosed spaces – from lochs to ocean basins.

Dunkirk Union jack bunting and signal flags at the ready. Dunkirk spirit is coming to St Katharine Docks for the Royal Coronation Weekend (5th-8th May).

The Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort will take place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6th May. In celebration, St Katharine Docks will be hosting what is thought to be 'the largest UK gathering of Dunkirk Little Ships in years'.

The Dunkirk evacuation, code-named Operation Dynamo, saw the evacuation of Allied soldiers during World War II from the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk, in the north of France, between 26 May and 4 June 1940. A collection of approximately 850 private boats and 20 warships participated in Operation Dynamo and more than 200 ships were lost. Known as 'Little Ships', many of these courageous vessels live on, privately-owned and exquisitely preserved.

The marina is very proud to be welcoming 36 vessels from the Association of Dunkirk Little Ships. The largest will be 'Greta', a 24-metre 19th century sailing barge, and what is thought to be the tiniest little ship of all, 26ft 'Firefly'. The vessels be arriving on Thursday 4th. Occupying the Docks centre basin, the vessels will be opening to public on Friday 5th and Sunday 7th May. Festivities on Friday will correspond with a May Tea Dance to be held on Marble Quay, with lessons and toe-tapping fun with dance troop, the Ragroof Players.

For the first time, the boating industry in Europe has launched a roadmap (downloadable below as a pdf) for solving the roadblocks to end-of-life boat recycling. Based on a three-year process involving all public and private stakeholders, it sets ambitious targets for the period until 2030. The boating industry also commits to phasing out unsustainable recycling practices.

The "Roadmap on the implementation of the circular economy for end-of-life boats" is launched by European Boating Industry (EBI) today. It sets the stage to comprehensively solve the issue of end-of-life boats, a key challenge for the industry. Public and private stakeholders, including national authorities, industry, consumers/boaters, academia, and related industries, developed a comprehensive approach. It follows the successful dismantling and recycling schemes already set up in many European countries.

There are estimated to be over 6.5 million boats in European waters, mostly smaller than 7.5 meters.

Oyster Yachts is celebrating 50 years of building yachts in 2023

The boatbuilder now has more than 600 employees in the UK, USA and Europe and an order book that stretches to 2026.

The company was founded by Sir Richard Matthews who had a vision for an Oyster 34, a cruiser racer designed by Don Pye of Holman and Pye and built using local boatbuilders Landamores in Wroxham, Norfolk.

In 1980, Sir Richard introduced the Oyster HP46, a yacht that featured Oyster's deck saloon, which became a signature feature on all Oyster Yachts.

The range extended to include the Oyster 41, 43, 53 and 55 and later, working with yacht designer Stephen Jones, the Oyster SJ35.

The boatbuilder has continued to evolve with the founding of a brokerage arm followed by the start of a relationship with naval architect Rob Humphreys, a partnership that has seen 17 models designed.

The largest Oyster in the current fleet, the Oyster 885, was launched in 2010 and along with the Oyster 625, was the first to feature Oyster's signature seascape windows and twin rudders.

Oyster yachts have now sailed more than 20 million sea miles with around 100 circumnavigations of the world carried out.

Other initiatives include the Oyster World Rally that was launched in 2013.

Multiplast have been chosen by the French Orient Express Team challenge, which was officially announced at the beginning of February, to build the hull and deck of the French AC75. This new project in the America's Cup is a real challenge for the Vannes yard, as explained by the general manager, Yann Penfornis, project manager, Samuel Napoleoni, and Antoine Carraz, the technical director for the challenge.

There is already a long and beautiful story linking Multiplast and the America's Cup. Over the past thirty years, the yard has actually built six boats (five America's Cup class and an AC50 flying catamaran) for French challenges involved in the oldest sporting trophy in the world. As Yann Penfornis, Managing Director of Multiplast recalls: "We built F1 then Ville de Paris for Marc Pajot for the 1992 America's Cup. Then there was 6e Sens for the 2000 edition in Auckland, the two Areva Challenge boats (2003) and the AC50 Groupama Team France for the 35th Cup in Bermuda in 2017."

And so a new sequel is being written with the first approaches dating back to May 2022 by the founders of the French challenge, then called K-Challenge, Stephane Kandler and Bruno Dubois. "A few weeks later, at the end of June, we had confirmation that we would work together to build the AC75 platform," continues Yann Penfornis. "Unfortunately, the project was slowed because an investor pulled out. Everything accelerated again around November 15 when Stephane Kandler and Bruno Dubois came back to us and the project restarted."
