The Ocean Race moves back into the Atlantic
All four boats are now in the Atlantic again, leaving the south behind, with Malizia at the head of the fleet.

Team Malizia continues to head the leaderboard in leg 3 of The Ocean Race after leading the fleet around Cape Horn.

On Tuesday it was 11th Hour Racing Team (12:55 UTC) and Biotherm (15:25 UTC) who took their turn passing the iconic landmark and joining the exclusive list of offshore sailors to have rounded the Horn.

The fleet has really split in two now, with Malizia fighting to fend off overall race leader, Team Holcim-PRB and 11th Hour Racing Team holding a slim advantage over Biotherm, but both are nearly a day behind the leading pair.

Endeavour Homes 2023 Flying Fifteen World Championship
Fremantle, Western Australia: After no sailing was possible on the penultimate day or the regatta only one race was sailed on the final day of the Flying Fifteen World Championship at Fremantle. With an unassailable lead Graham Vials and Chris Turner (GBR) won their unprecedented fifth World Championship in the class. Vials and Turner from Derwent Reservoir / Lyme Regis SC won 5 of the 10 world championship races and with drops of a 4th and 8th they could not be beaten.

The final race of the series was started at 1030 hrs on a sultry Saturday morning in a fading Easterly breeze which started at around 10 - 11 knots and by the end of the two lap windward / leeward course with a final upwind to the finish line, had dropped to a soft 6 knots.

Nick Jerwood and Brad Sheridan from South of Perth YC/Fremantle SC led the final race from start to finish extending on every leg. The Australian pair did everything possible to close the points gap on Floaty McFloat Face (Vials / Turner) but ended up just three points shy of the British boat.

In the final race of the series a couple of boats sailed outstandingly, Kim Peaker and Neill White (SoPYC) finished in third and Esperance Bay boat sailed by David Swan and Matt Elliot finished 4th their best result of the series.

Final top ten
1. Floaty McFloat Face - Graham Vials / Chris Turner (GBR) 16 points
2. Best Foot Forward - Nick Jerwood / Brad Sheridan (AUS) 19
3. Ffast Lane 3 - Lachy Gilmour / Ryan Donaldson (AUS) 34
4. Oooh La La - Ian Pinnell / Ian Cadwallader (GBR) 37
5. Puffa Fish - Hamish Mackay / Andrew Lawson (GBR) 57
6. El Toro - Grant Alderson / Luke Paterson (AUS) 70
7. The Answer - Greg Tonnison / Nick Robinson (AUS) 76
8. Firefly - Philippa Packer / Dean McAullay (AIS) 78
9. A-Squared - Andrew Knowles / Anne Knowles(AUS) 90
10. Ineffable - Mike Dunbar / Paul Dunbar (AUS) 90

Elegance in the detail - Pauger Carbon Composites
Pauger Carbon Composites When Pauger Carbon decided to push both performance and elegance to the max with their latest composite standing rigging product they ensured that it was just as easy to retrofit as to install on a new launching

The evolution of fibre standing rigging technology moves fast. Ongoing development in materials and design is starting to produce solutions which, compared with conventional stainless steel rod, are smaller in profile for low windage and lighter in weight for greater stability and less pitch gyradius. The end result is higher performance potential in any new project or retrofit rig scenario. Pauger Carbon's experience and history with carbon spar manufacturing is now showing exciting promise in their new line of solid carbon rigging.

While carbon rod rigging may not be new, what Pauger Carbon is doing with this material is at the leading edge of development, taking it to new levels of performance. This starts with using an extremely high grade of carbon: while other carbon rod rigging is usually built from Toray T700 as standard and T800 as intermediate modulus, Pauger uses Toray T1100 which is 42 per cent stronger than T700 and 19 per cent stronger than T800.

Warsash Spring Series - Week 3
Photo by Peter Bateson. Click on image for photo gallery.

Warsash Spring Series At the half-way point of the Series, after six races on three Sundays, some form is starting to show. IRC3 is led by Quokka (Peter Rutter/James Crew, Half-Tonner) by 3 points over Jon Powell's latest Betty, an SJ320. In IRC2, Rob Cotterill's J/109 Mojo Risin' heads sistership Jybe Talkin' by one point, with the Arcona 38 Triarchy of Ollie Reynolds and faith Burns one further point adrift. Charlie Whelan's The Bodfather (Cape 31) leads the small IRC1 class.

Race 3 was grey, slightly damp, and with a fluky 4 knot breeze off the mainland shore, rising slowly to 8 knots by the end of the day's racing. Boats that had been out the previous day in the JOG Nab Tower race experiencing 30 knots may have appreciated the respite although a "happy medium" would have been more satisfying.

The series continues on three more Sundays through to the end of April, with a break for Easter. The Spring Championship with multiple races for IRC, Cape 31s, J/70s and SB20s is over the two weekends of 15-16th and 22nd-23rd April. -- Peter Bateson

Class40: Skippers, the rule, costs, schedule
Class regulars have known Cedric de Kervenoael for a long time. A lawyer and passionate sailor, Cedric de Kervenoael has been a member of the board of directors since 2015 and has worked for a long time alongside Halvard Mabire and Vanessa Boulaire. Now after ten years serving as president Halvard Mabire has stepped down and it is de Kervenoael who has taken over. Key objectives are to ensure continuity, structure the class, promote constructive exchanges between members and maintain the dynamism of these times. Here he unfolds his roadmap as agreed with the members of the Board of Directors.

It must remain an accessible class for amateurs. "Our aim is to retain amateur skippers while continuing also to attract professionals. If the circuit and the achievable budgets allow professionals to join us, we also want to listen to amateurs. To do this, we are consistently concerned with controlling costs, but whilst having a schedule that allows everyone to flourish. The Class is here to accompany skippers, to advise them. Thiis is also a high level class and it is important to find the right balance. We are thinking about rewarding the best amateur and the best professional teams in the future."

Stabilize the rule, control costs. "We want to keep boats simple and accessible, keep the boats easy to sail with budgets that are relatively achievable. There is no question for the moment of adopting foils or Outriggers! To control costs, we are thinking, for example, of refining a quota of sails. We are also going to launch a study to see if we can benefit from controlled prices in terms of electronics, even if it means defining standard product lines with each of the manufacturers that fall within the rule. Of course one-design is not in the DNA of Class40s, but we want to stabilize the rule to have a stable and not build obsolescence into the fleet.

Bermuda Race Weather
It has been said that Races are lost on the water. The implication being that real success is the result of effort put in well before the start of the Race. This effort includes all aspects of boat preparation, crew selection and training, and the multiplicity of factors affecting race strategy and the associated sail selection.

The Bermuda Race Organizing Committee (BROC), recognizing the importance of these efforts, provides a variety of resources to assist both first-time and experienced Bermuda Race entrants. Ambassadors assist in the entry process, while Inspectors help with all aspects of boat preparation.

In addition, the Race website provides a variety of resources intended to complement navigation and strategic planning. These include Gulf Stream Tutorials dating back to the 2002 Race and a variety of Links for websites dealing with Gulf Stream characteristics and weather. The weather links include one providing access to archived data from NOAA's Ocean Prediction Center. The combination of historic Gulf Stream tutorials and archived weather allows a study of conditions experienced in previous races and the development of potential future race strategies.

To realize maximum benefit of these talents and resources it is essential to start early. Spring of 2023 is none too early to start planning and study for the 2024 Newport Bermuda Race. Select the weather model you plan to use for routing (e.g. GFS, EURO, etc..) and live with it. Obtain the forecast for your area and compare it to conditions experienced. Look out the window! Some reasonable degree of accuracy will give you confidence in the model product. Similarly, download satellite images of the sea surface temperatures (SST) across the Gulf Stream (see Image above). Compare these to model results such as the Global RTOFS of NOAA or HYCOM from the Navy.

CCA sponsored two day-long symposia in which this subject was discussed in some detail. The resulting videos can be found at sas.cruisingclub.org/weather/online . An early start to these studies provides the best foundation for a safe and successful race to Bermuda and return home.
