Endeavour Homes 2023 Flying Fifteen World Championship
Race 7 winner Nick Jerwood / Brad Sheridan. Click on image for photo gallery.

Flying Fifteen Fremantle, Western Australia: Just one race today on yet another hot late summer day in Fremantle as the regatta passes the halfway point. The fleet was held ashore for a few hours until a soft sea breeze perked up about midday.

Race 7 begun in 7 - 11 knots from the SW. A course 6 was set which consisted of two windward / leeward legs followed by a beat to the finish. The race was started under black flag after one general recall.

It has become usual that the fleet are spread over a massive distance after only half the 1.3nm upwind leg has been sailed. At one point the right looked good then the trusty left looked good and just sometimes tacking on the shifts up the middle seems to pay. On this occasion new faces appeared first at the top mark, a British crew Terry Scutcher and Chris Hewkin representing Dubai Offshore SC and Burton/Shotley. They were followed by Graham Vials and Chris Turner (GBR) and more new faces in the kiwi crew of Wayne Avery and Ross Bannan from Manly SC in Auckland.

As the championship goes past the half way mark after 7 races with 1 discard, Vials / Turner remain in the lead overall but the gap is closing to second placed Jerwood / Sheridan. The other GBR boat Ian Pinnell and Ian Cadwallader remain third overall.

The fleet will enjoy an evening at Gage Roads Brewery on the Fremantle Harbour wall followed by daily presentations at the WA Maritime Museum. There is a lay day on Wednesday and racing resumes on Thursday. -- Jonny Fullerton - Regatta Services

Vendee Globe 2024 The Race Direction team for the 2024 Vendee Globe has been announced. It is made up of : Hubert Lemonnier, Jacques Caraes, Claire Renou, Pierre Hays and Yann Elies. Jacques Caraes, the race director of the two previous editions, is handing over to his right-hand man Hubert Lemonnier. The tenth edition of the Vendee Globe, which will start on 10th November 2024, will focus on the transmission of knowledge.

The race control is an important part of the Vendee Globe organisation. It ensures the safety of the sailors at sea in direct relation with the French Sailing Federation, the Race Committee, the Technical Committee, the International Jury and the Medical Commission.

"This team is experienced, complementary and brings together all the skills needed to ensure the safety of the sailors at sea. I am delighted to be able to pass on the baton for this essential position, which is the race director, which is why I have selected this team, which is truly rooted in the transmission of knowledge between Jacques Caraes, the race director for the 2016 and 2020 editions, and Hubert Lemonnier, who will be heading up this team at the end of his accreditation process. They will be supported by an experienced team made up of Claire Renou and Pierre Hays, both already present in the 2020 edition and with solid references in the ocean racing world. Yann Elies, who has taken part in the Vendee Globe twice, will strengthen the team by bringing his valuable experience as an offshore sailor," declared Alain Leboeuf, President of the Vendee Globe.

Today, there are 28 official candidates for the 10th edition

Sailors have until 2nd October 2023 to officially declare themselves as candidates.

New York Vendee - Les Sables d'Olonne

Largest field of international teams entered in 2023 AEGEAN 600
AEGEAN 600 With more than two months to go before the close of entries, organizers from the Hellenic Offshore Racing Club (HORC) are excited that there are already teams from 13 nations signed up for the 2023 edition of the AEGEAN 600. This is the most internationally-diverse fleet in the three-year history of this annual race, often referred to the "perfect 600-mile race" for its superb race course, excellent weather and sea conditions, and outstanding Greek hospitality.

Activities in this 3rd edition of the race start on Sunday July 2nd with free berthing for all entries, followed by numerous pre-race activities held daily, such as the Safety Seminar (shown to the right) held on Thursday July 6th. The Skipper's Briefing will be on Friday July 7th, and then the spectacular start of the race held at the ancient Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounio (shown above) on Sunday July 9th. The event concludes with a gala Awards ceremony on Saturday July 15th.

All activities will be held at the Olympic Marine venue, a premier full-service facility that provides complete services and support for visiting yachtsman. Dockage for entries this year will not only be available at no charge from July 2nd through July 17th, but moorings will be organized together to create a more cohesive Race Village feel to the event. This will allow participants and their friends and family to enjoy the pre- and post-race ambience among the fleet of boats entered in the race.\

Another innovation is adding a new event to the entry calendar: a 13-mile warm-up race starting at 11:00 on Saturday July 8th. This short prelude to the main event starting the following day will offer a more structured opportunity for not only the teams to practice, but the race committee as well.

The current entries in this 3rd edition are spread widely in size, origin and boat type. Among the monohulls this ranges from Gerasimos Petratos and Evangelia Delidou's local-based Greek double-handed Dehler 30 AETHER to George Sakellaris's USA-based Maxi 72 PROTEUS (shown above) and Chris Sherlock's Farr 100 Leopard 3 from Malta.

A wide range of multihulls are also in this fleet, from Andreas Hofmaier's 32-foot Corsair Cruze 970 trimaran SAYG I from Austria to Niels Hartmann's 50-foot Marsaudon Composites TS5 catamaran KIRKI from Jersey.

Griffin Programme 2023 - Marina Militare Nastro Rosa Tour
The Royal Ocean Racing Club is delighted to announce fantastic opportunities for sailors wanting to race double handed in 2023 for aspiring rookies to top offshore racers. The RORC's Griffin Fund and its generous supporter, the Marina Militare Nastro Rosa Tour, have exciting projects in place, supporting teams in world class events across the spectrum of double handed racing in France and Italy.

The RORC invite applications from individuals or pairs for five exciting events racing in the one-design Beneteau Figaro3. Riccardo Simoneschi, Chairman of the Marina Militare Nastro Rosa Tour has confirmed an entry for the Royal Ocean Racing Club. The Figaro3 is provided to the RORC as a free charter and regatta entry. It is highly likely that a RORC Squad will be formed for the Tour, which spans five world-class events from April - November 2023.

"RORC is a benchmark in offshore sailing, delivering top sailing, promotion, and culture," commented Riccardo Simoneschi leader of SSI Events, the organizer of the Marina Militare Nastro Rosa Tour. "The MMNRT share the vision of active promotion of offshore sailing in any way possible and we support the idea to bring it within Olympic sailing. Both the MMNRT and the RORC want to promote double-handed offshore sailing, a format that is now widely recognized, is constantly growing, and worthy of attention. The MMNRT have seized the opportunity to develop the discipline for the last four years, adding to the current panorama of international offshore sailing that offers many high-calibre events, where skills such as seamanship, navigation and endurance should prevail. This agreement with RORC stems precisely from the awareness that it is necessary to find common values and innovation." -- Louay Habib/RORC

Towards (ever) better data - A&T Instruments
WHAT The masthead is the most dynamically vigorous point on a sailing boat... without factoring that movement into your instruments all that wonderful masthead data will only ever be one part of the story

In the November edition of this magazine, the design features of the new A+T wind sensor were covered showing how it sets new standards of light weight, fast response time and robust construction.

Here we examine in more detail the interface options available and their applications including the revolutionary Inertial IMHU which measures mast head motion right at the wind sensor itself.

Pallas Capital TP52 Gold Cup: Matador to defend title
Start of previous TP52 (AUS) event. Photo by Crosbie Lorimer. Click on image to enlarge.

TP52 Act 1 of the 2023 Pallas Capital TP52 Gold Cup series will be hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia this weekend when David Doherty and his Matador team will be back to defend the overall title they won last year.

Matador has retained the form that earned her victory at the inaugural 2022 TP52 series. Hot to trot, Doherty’s boat also won the 2022 CYCA Trophy and placed second overall to the new TP52, Caro, at the 2022 Australian Yachting Championships at Hamilton Island.

However, others have further honed their skills more recently with the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, the 2023 Australian Yachting Championships and other regattas, events Matador did not attend.

Among the starters in Act 1 are old foes and new challengers - the former includes Craig Neil’s Quest and Chris Townsend and Matt Donald’s Gweilo.

Quest won the 2021 Gold Cup and finished runner-up 2022. She has twice won the Sydney Hobart and has also finished runner-up and third.

Gweilo won the 2022 IRC component of the Series from Matadsor, was second in the CYCA Trophy and placed second overall in the 2022 Sydney Hobart.

Gordon Ketelbey’s Zen and Sebastien Bohm’s Smuggler also return to the fold to settle old scores. Zen placed third overall under IRC in last year’s Series, won division in January’s Festival of Sails in Geelong and placed second to SMB at the Australian Yachting Championships.

The overall winner and main prize will be decided under TPR, a rating system created by Terry Wetton, the event founder and class captain. It ensures a fair playing field as it supports youth sailors (Under 25) and levels the professional field out with clicks added to the handicap.

Also scored under IRC, prizes will be awarded to first, second and third places in both handicap categories. -- Di Pearson/TP52 media

IMA Maxi Europeans
Pre-registration for the International Maxi Association’s second Maxi European Championship ended on Wednesday with the entry list already exceeding the 25 that participated in 2022.

For a second year the IMA Maxi European Championship will be part of Tre Golfi Sailing Week, run by the Naples-based Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia (CRVI) in conjunction with the IMA, the body officially tasked by World Sailing to administer and develop maxi yacht racing internationally. It is raced under IRC with all entries required to have IRC Endorsed certificates.

Taking place over 12-18 May, the IMA Maxi Europeans will again start with the CRVI’s Regata dei Tre Golfi offshore race, leaving Naples at 1700 on 12 May and this year finishing off Sorrento. It will be followed by four days of inshore and coastal racing, based out of Sorrento, with courses on the Bay of Naples, including the popular course around Capri, if conditions allow.

The scratch boat this year will again be Furio Benussi’s 100ft Arca SGR. In 2022 Arca SGR comfortably claimed line honours in the light wind Regata dei Tre Golfi, despite in the last miles suffering the failure of the hydraulic ram vital to cant her keel. Hopefully this is now resolved as an entirely new Cariboni hydraulic system is being fitted ready for this season.

This year she will face the Reichel/Pugh 90 La Bete Portopiccolo Prosecco DOC. Originally launched as Alfa Romeo 1, she won Rolex Sydney Hobart line honours in 2002, the year before Arca SGR did under her original name, Skandia. Then as George David’s first Rambler maxi she won much silverware and in 2007 set a Rolex Middle Sea Race record that would stand for 14 years.

They will be joined on the Bay of Naples this year by another Adriatic-based maxi - Alberto Leghissa's 2000 vintage Frers 63 canting keeler Anywave-Safilens, which last competed at this regatta in 2018.

Nipping at the heels of Arca SGR will be the Club Swan 80 My Song of Pier Luigi Loro Piana, which made her race debut at last September’s Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. -- James Boyd / International Maxi Association
