Ocean Race Fleet Back In Western Hemisphere
The past week has been one of the milestones for the sailors in The Ocean Race. Record-breaking 24-hour runs, the passing of the scoring gate, and the halfway point of the 12,750-nautical mile leg to Brazil highlighted the fleet's final days in the Eastern Hemisphere, as Kevin Escoffier's Swiss-flagged Holcim - PRB led the fleet across the Antimeridian and into the western half of the planet shortly past midnight UTC.

The fleet charged hard over the past week as the scoring gate at 143E longitude lured ahead. With each boat speeding along at 24 knots, Escoffier's crew was first through the gate and garnered 5 points. Holcim - PRB leads the overall standings with 15 points, five points ahead of Charlie Enright's 11th Hour Racing Team from Newport, which was third through the gate after losing a close battle with Boris Hermann's Team Malizia from Germany, which is now one point behind 11th Hour Racing Team in third place. Paul Meilhat's French-flagged Biotherm was fourth through the gate and is fourth overall.

The approach to the gate coincided with perfect northwesterly winds of 20-25 knots, ideal planning conditions for the foil-aided 60-footers. "Not sure we are ever going to be forced to reach in a straight line at 90 degrees true for 600 miles in 23 knots and flattish seas ever again!" said 11th Hour Racing Team onboard reporter Amory Ross (USA). WATCH: Getting Points on the Board

This edition's new 24-hour race record stands at 594.28 nautical miles and was set by Holcim - PRB on Mar. 12 at an average speed of 24.76 knots. When considering that speed, imagine being in a four-wheel vehicle driving over a hard-packed mogul field at an average speed of 28.5MPH. It's hard living that shakes your spleen and rattles your molars.

"From the start in Cape Town to this scoring gate, I think we've done very well to keep the other boats behind us," Escoffier said on Mar. 13. "We've also had an amazing 24-hour record. So, I'm very happy with the boat, very happy with the crew, and I think we deserve to enjoy, but now it's back to work."

The next milestone for the crews will be Cape Horn, approximately 4,600 nautical miles to the east.

No Racing on Day 3 of the Snipe WHA Championship
No wind and fog were the order of the day for the competitors at the Snipe Western Hemisphere & Asia Championship.

Postponed onshore for no wind, the sailors waited anxiously for the wind to fill, but the day was called once the fog rolled in, not bringing any wind with it.

With 3 races completed, the Championship is valid, but all competitors are hoping for more wind to sail at least the last 2 days of the schedule.

The WHA serves as a country qualifier for 2 nations for the Pan Am Games to be sailed in these same waters October 25-Nov 5, 2023. The Snipe is a mixed dinghy for the Pan Am Games with 21 of the teams registered as mixed.

Racing continues on Friday with 2 races scheduled per day, although 3 can be held to make up for the missed races, with the final day on Saturday, March 18.

The regatta can be followed on the Championship website: wha.snipechampionships.org

Wingfoil Racing World Cup Series
Long Distance is a tough opening test

It was a tricky, challenging long distance race that opened the competition at the Ad Ports Group Wingfoil Racing World Cup Abu Dhabi. The whole fleet, men and women, lined up on one start line for an upwind start.

A year ago, upwind racing was still too difficult in this fledgling, rapidly developing board sport, but the quality of the equipment and the riders' techniques have come on leaps and bounds since then. The wings are becoming more aerodynamic and the riders are getting fitter.

While the winner's time in the long distance race was just 30 minutes, others in the fleet took a lot longer. And if you don't think 30 minutes sounds very long, try holding your arms above your head for that length of time!

Reigning Men's World Champion Mathis Ghio (FRA) found himself struggling to maintain pace on the upwind leg with some of his rivals.

On Friday the short course racing begins, with target finish time for the leader around 6 to 7 minutes per race.

Sailing World on Water
These are highlights of what happened globally in the sport of sailing in the last 7 days. Skipper, journalist, and devoted family man Fabrice Amedeo was brutally confronted with a truism in November 2022, when a ferocious Atlantic storm, an explosion and fire on his boat forced him to bail out of La Route du Rhum, and switch into survivor mode and evacuate his sinking boat. Two months after nearly drowning in the Atlantic, Fabrice has now dusted himself off and is all set to go on a new boat he was able to acquire in January, the former Artisans Artipôle, owned by Arnaud Boissières .

At 1745 hours UTC last Monday Holcim-PRB crossed the 143º East scoring longitude in 1st position thus winning 5 new points in The Ocean Race. Having won the first two legs Paul Me-hat and his crew were ecstatic to add to their total.

The huge 30 by 30 meter racing trimaran, Spindrift, skippered by Donna Bertarelli and Yann Guichard is once again readying for their attempt for the Jules Verne Trophy for being the fastest boat to sail around the world. Here they are poised and waiting for a favourable weather window.

EUROSAF celebrated its 25th anniversary
On Saturday evening, the European Sailing Federation EUROSAF celebrated its 25th anniversary in Rome. The Federation was founded in Rome in March 1998. 25 years later, in March 2023, EUROSAF, together with the Italian Sailing Federation Federazione Italiana Vela (FIV), invited numerous guests of honour to a celebration gala.

On the occasion of the Ordinary General Assembly, the Members of EUROSAF met already in the morning in Rome. In the evening, the venerable Circolo Canottieri Aniene became the stage for the 25th anniversary celebration. The location is one of the most beautiful clubs in Rome and has become a social and sporting institution at Italian and international level.

The Executive Board of the European Sailing Federation led by president Josep M. Pla (AND) and the two honorary presidents Oleg Ilyin (RUS) and György Wossala (HUN) were welcomed by FIV president Francesco Ettorre. Delegates and guests from 26 national sailing federations, from Portugal to Turkey and from Sweden to Cyprus, as well as World Sailing vice-presidents Özlem Akdurak and Tomasz Chamera, came to congratulate them.

Among the guests of honour were former EUROSAF presidents Arturo Delgado (ESP; 2002–2004), György Wossala (HUN; 2004–2010) and Marco Predieri (ITA; 2010–2017).

We will be back
The GUYOT environnement - Team Europe yacht has been craned back into the water on Monday after the hull damage was repaired. After the mast was set and some tests were carried out on the water, the crew with Sébastien Simon, Phillip Kasüske, Jimmy le Baut and Clovis Gautier as well as onboard reporter Charles Drapeau started today, Thursday, in Cape Town/South Africa for the transfer to Brazil.

The routing for the passage has calculated around 4500 nautical miles of distance in a northerly route around the St Helena High. The predicted arrival is on 30 March. In Itajaí, the European team plans to rejoin The Ocean Race and compete in the fourth leg of the world race, which starts on 23 April

The transfer crew will be scrutinising the yacht as it crosses the Atlantic, which is why two members of the Tech Team, Jimmy le Baut and Clovis Gautier, are also on board. "After the repairs, it's the best opportunity for me to get to know the boat. I'm happy to be on board and I think we'll be across the Atlantic in around 15 days. The transfer is of course mainly about getting the yacht to Brazil without damage. But of course we will also check all systems to bring the yacht in the best shape to the start of the fourth leg. For me, it is the first Atlantic crossing on an Imoca. But I have been involved in several Vendée Globe campaigns," reports Jimmy le Baut.

Benjamin Dutreux, skipper of GUYOT environnement - Team Europe, and co-skipper Robert Stanjek will follow the transfer from home to join the team in Itajaí in early April.

"It was really a tough job because there was an area of several square metres delaminated. It was the right decision to return to Cape Town. Because with the damage we wouldn't have been able to sail through Southern Ocean," Benjamin Dutreux reported on a serious situation in the Southern Ocean: "The damage was so extensive that we assumed it would take about a month to repair in a shipyard. But we knew we had to do it in a week. It was really a great technical and human achievement. We had five men under the boat and three men in the boat laminating. It's a good example that you can achieve a lot with great man power and that you should never give up. It further bonded the team together."

Women sail too
Last week Outremer launched its final video as part of a multi-media campaign to celebrate International Women's Day and the success of its long-standing 'Ladies Only' programs. The campaign features a short series of highly entertaining videos that looks at men and women in sailing, and the biased narratives that sometimes exists between them.

To support women sailors, Outremer asked Nikki Henderson to be part of the "Ladies Only" program, which allows women to improve their sailing skills through a series of training sessions, webinars and forums, offered throughout the year, and adapted to all levels.

On International Women's Rights Day, we launched a multimedia campaign to celebrate women sailors and highlight the Ladies Only program, a 100% women's program that has been a real success since its launch.

The campaign includes a series of videos that humorously deflect the prejudices that women can face in the world of sailing.

Edgartown Yacht Club to Host 100th Annual Regatta in July
Edgartown, Massachusetts, USA: Edgartown Yacht Club (EYC) will celebrate a full century of competitive sailing this year with its 100th Annual Regatta on July 12-16. The regatta first took place in 1924 and was run from a rented cottage on the waterfront at the Harborside Inn. More than 100 vessels – mainly small gaff-rigged Catboats – took part in a festival of sail that delighted participants and spectators alike. Over the decades since, the event has met with continued success, morphing into a nine-class event that, for 2023, will host 170 or more boats.

The Edgartown Yacht Club 100th Annual Regatta will see its sailors racing in three sessions. The first, on Wednesday, July 12 and Thursday, July 13, is for junior sailors who will compete on one of three racing circles set up to accommodate three classes: C420, Optimist Dinghy Champs, and Optimist Dinghy Green. (The two-day regatta also serves as a qualifier for the SMSA Grand Prix for both Opti and C420 classes.) The second session, from Friday, July 14 through Sunday, July 16, is for keelboat sailors who will compete on either of two racing circles set up for five classes: Shields, Wianno Seniors, J/70s, Rhodes 19s, and Herreshoff 12 1/2s. (The three-day Shields event also serves as the Shields New England Championship.) The third session, on Saturday, July 15 overlaps the keelboat racing and is reminiscent of the regatta's roots; it is a single race around government marks for traditional Catboats.
