Globe40 Arrivals
At 19:41 UTC today the Dutch team SEC HAYAI formed by Frans Budel and Ysbrand Endt crossed the finish line of the 8th and last stage of the GLOBE40 in front of Lorient . The Anglo-American crew AMHAS of Craig Horsfield and Oliver Bond had preceded them at 15:05 UTC after 19 days at sea . th stage win; two small points (33 and 35 points) separate these two crews after 8 stages and 9 months of racing. This victory for the Batavian team was achieved after 161 days at sea and 33,311 miles covered at an average speed of 8.62 knots.

AMHAS winner of a perilous final stage.

Leaving on February 24 from the Island of Grenada, the competitors in the GLOBE40 had 3,600 miles ahead of their bows in this winter transatlantic return. After moving up towards the north of the Caribbean arc, they found themselves stuck for almost a week in a zone of calm near the Bahamas. Then, freed from this Bermuda triangle which didn't speak its name, the crews had to confront a succession of powerful depressions on their way to the Azores, generating winds of up to more than 60 knots and seas of 6 to 8 meters. Arrived near the archipelago of the Azores where they had a door to cross the teams did not find more favorable conditions and had to face again a succession of depressions which make this stage the hardest weather conditions, worse than in the Indian Ocean and Pacific stages. A final and huge gust of wind the day before the finish even forced the first 2 AMHAS and SEC HAYAI to slow down voluntarily to avoid hollows of 10 m in the Bay of Biscay. AMHAS thus signs a very beautiful 3th stage victory after that of the 2nd stage of 7700 miles between Cape Verde and Mauritius and that of the 6th stage between Ushuaia and Recife.

SEC HAYAI: a victory built.

The Dutch victory is the fruit of rigorous and intelligent work and construction. Starting from the observation that their Class40 was the oldest in the fleet and theoretically the slowest, they worked on all the aspects that could enable them to compensate for this initial handicap: complete refit of the boat before departure, very complete technical preparation upstream, sporting approach rather aiming for regularity (only one stage victory, but not just any with a long 3rd7,000 mile stage between Mauritius and Auckland) than the brilliance, the quality of life on board to be able to last, a very strong understanding between the 2 skippers who will have covered the entire course together, and finally a strong complementarity of personalities between Frans who brought all his enthusiasm and his rigor as a business manager and Ysbrand professional who knew how to sport the whole project.

Snipe Western Hemisphere & Asia Championship
Close racing on the second day of Snipe Western Hemisphere & Asia Championship in Algarrobo, Chile. Photo by Matias Capizzano. Click on image to enlarge.

Snipe Western Hemisphere & Asia Championship Algarrobo, Chile: Only one was race was held on Wednesday, March 15 due to very light winds. Although the forecast was for freshening breeze as the day wore on, it did not materialize and the Race committee did their best in the 5-6 knots they were given.

All competitors headed out for the normal start time but were postponed on the water while the race committee searched for wind. After moving the course closer to the Club, a race was off in a double windward-leeward course around 3pm local time.

Juliana Duque/Rafael Martins (BRA) started in the middle of the line and punched out to an early lead rounding the weather mark first and extending in the light air. The pair recently won the very competitive Brazilian Nationals and are poised to earn the Brazilian Pan Am entry while also working on a 470 campaign. Second in today's race were Matias and Constanza Seguel, local Chileans who were ready to move up after yesterday. Nicolas Garcia with son Juan Cruz Garcia (ARG) crewing crossed 3rd followed by Pablo Defazio and Mariana Foglia (URU) enjoying being back in the Snipe after their own Olympic campaigns.

Being consistent in these 3 races has now put Luis Soubie/Diego Lipszyc (ARG) tied for first with Rafael Gagliotti/Matheus Goncalves (BRA) both with 15 points. Team Seguel moves into 3rd overall with Randy Lake/Alice Schmid (USA) in 4th and Raul Rios/Lexi Pline (PUR) in 5th.

Yesterday's leaders Rodriguez/Tocke (USA) posted a 19 in today's race pushing them to 6th overall in the standings.

The WHA serves as a country qualifier for 2 nations for the Pan Am Games to be sailed in these same waters October 25-Nov 5, 2023. The Snipe is a mixed dinghy for the Pan Am Games with 21 of the teams registered as mixed.

Racing continues on Thursday with 2 races scheduled per day, although 3 can be held to make up for today's missed second race, with the final day on Saturday, March 18.

Round Ireland Yacht Cruise Is "Romantic but Manageable" Challenge
You could over-analyse the many attractions of a round Ireland cruise. Apart from being a romantic yet manageable act of homage to our island home, it appeals equally to the adventurous - in that you are always outward bound – and the homebodies, in that you're headed for your home port from the moment you leave it. And in those circumstances, it's a rather dull approach to the project to work out exactly where the halfway mark will be in relation to your start point. For although everyone does of course do such calculations, often the specific point slips by unnoticed, as the interest of the moment is in the fresh coastlines and islands up ahead still waiting to be enjoyed

The ambition to cruise or race or set records for sailing round our island is something nurtured by probably a majority of Irish sailors, and it has been achieved by thousands since the biennial Round Ireland Race from Wicklow was introduced in 1980. It's a healthy straight line distance at 704 miles, but if you're cruising and diverting to the more interesting places along the way, you'll very quickly run up a total of a thousand nautical miles, and often it's 1,200.

But far from familiarity with the circuit through the Round Ireland race reducing the sense of challenge in such a round Ireland cruise, it has on the contrary increased it. For all recent Round Ireland Races have had a volatile weather pattern which has heightened the perception of our Atlantic seaboard as being an often very seriously rugged place to sail.

For some, this merely reinforces the notion that West Coast sailors must be bonkers.

Notice of Race for the Arkea Ultim Challenge - Brest is published
This week OC Sport Pen Duick, the company which is responsible for organizing the ARKEA ULTIM CHALLENGE – Brest, have officially published the Notice of Race which details the rules for participation in this exciting inaugural solo Ultim round the world race. These rules include key information about:

- The start from Brest which is now scheduled for January 7, 2024
- The registration deadline
- The Qualifying Course
- The race time limit and an outline of technical stops and the concept of assistance

Also in the comprehensive document are some subtle new features such as a "Ghost" mode which is expected to further spice up the race which will be the very first solo round-the-world race for trimarans of the Ultim 32/23 Class.

One interesting feature will be "Ghost" mode, will should spice up moments during the race. Each of the skippers can activate "Ghost mode" for a period of 24 hours up to twice during the course except for within a perimeter of less than 500 miles from the start or finish line.

Technical stops will be authorized but whether they take place at the dock in a port at anchor they will be subject to a minimum stoppage time of 24 hours. Finally, the last important point: with regard to the assistance, any human and/or technological intervention from outside, from off the boat allowing remote action on one or more element(s), equipment(s), or settings of the boat in the place of the sailor will be prohibited.

Whitbread History Strong in Ocean Globe Race 50th Celebration
1973: Start of the first Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race with Chay Blyth's 'Great Britain II' leading Eric Tabarly's French entry 'Pen Duick VI'. Photo by Bob Fisher/PPL Photo Agency Whitbread The legendary Whitbread Round The World Race will forever be linked to Great Britain with those iconic images of 17 classic yachts sailing down the Solent into the unknown. It was the start of the first ever fully crewed yacht race around the world on September 8th, 1973. No one knew what would happen. Eight months later, passing the Needles on the way to the finish, the legend of the Whitbread was set.

It had cost the lives of three sailors swept overboard, but changed the lives of every sailor who had participated. With the Whitbread so connected to British yachting history, it was ironic that none had entered the Ocean Globe Race until now, with the French contingent leading the charge for honours in this 50th anniversary celebration of that first race.

Tracy Edwards, who expressed early interest in the OGR, had her plans for Maiden disrupted by the global pandemic. The iconic yacht had to stop then resume her world tour in September 2021. Her ongoing mission is to educate, empower and elevate girls, increasing their life and career choices through the all-woman Maiden Whitbread story. The crew engaged with schools, charities and organisations in more than 20 destinations around the world, raising money to fund girls' educational projects.

Now, Tracy Edwards MBE and DP World, the sponsor of The Maiden Factor World Tour, have seen a new opportunity to further their objectives and announced that Maiden and her all-female crew will enter the 2023 Ocean Globe Race.

"We are very excited to take part in the 2023 Ocean Globe Race, over 30 years since Maiden and the first all-female crew defied the odds in the 89/90 Whitbread race. Since then, Maiden has become a Global Ambassador for empowerment of girls through education and we have a young skipper and crew who will have the experience of a lifetime, just as we did all those years ago."

Abu Dhabi ready for World's Best Wingers
Reigning World Champions Paula Novotna (CZE) and Mathis Ghio (FRA) are ready to begin their defence of the women's and men's titles at the 2023 AD ports group WingFoil World Cup Abu Dhabi.

Taking place from 15 to 19 March on Al Mirfa Beach, one of the best watersports venues in the United Arab Emirates, the first event of the 2023 Wingfoil Racing World Cup Series will be an important marker to gauge how equipment and techniques are progressing in this young and rapidly-developing sport.

In the women's competition, Novotna was the stand-out talent of the 2022 season and it's up to the likes of Orane Ceris (FRA) - title runner-up last year - to see if she can get closer to the world-beating performance of the Czech star. Unfortunately sharks got in the way of Ceris being able to train in New Caledonia, her idyllic home in the South Pacific. "There were three shark attacks in three weeks," she said, "so I haven't done much winging since the end of last year. I've been skiing with my family, taking some time off after last year. But I hope I can get closer to Paula this season."

There's still an enormous diversity of equipment on the wingfoil racing circuit, with the top riders always learning new waterstart techniques to enable them to stand on smaller boards powered by ever-smaller foils. The smaller the equipment, the less hydro and aero resistance for better top-end speed - but all at the expense of more difficult take-off techniques.

The first race takes place on Thursday 16 March.
