18ft Skiff Championship Defending champion Andoo team of John Winning Jr, Seve Jarvin and Sam Newton held off a final challenge over the last downwind leg of the course to win an exciting, incident packed Race 7 of the Winning Group JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff Championship on Sydney Harbour today.

Andoo grabbed the lead, from Smeg, for the first time shortly after rounding the last weather mark and defeated a gallant Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price, Josh McKnight and Harry Hall) by just 7s.

Finport Finance (Keagan York, Angus Williams and Phil Marshall) finished a further 1m27s back in third place, ahead of Lazarus (Marcus Ashley Jones), Yandoo (John Winning), Balmain Slake (Henry Larkings), Smeg (Michael Coxon), Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Dave O'Connor), Noakes Youth (Tom Cunich) and Black Knight (Heinrich Bayern).

With protests pending, the net progress points, with two more races to be sailed in the championship, are: Andoo leading on 17, Smeg 22, Finport Finance 23, then three teams Big Pete (Sean Langman), Yandoo and Rag & Famish Hotel all equal on 27 points.

Today's race was sailed in a 10 knot Easterly breeze and produced an exciting event for spectators as the leading four teams fought hard over the final lap of the course. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Remaining race dates for the Winning Group 73rd JJ Giltinan World 18 footer Championship are:
Saturday, March 11 - Race 8

The Ocean Race: Closing Time
It's been a fantastic 48 hours on the race track for the trio of boats chasing down the current Leg 3 leader, Team Holcim-PRB.

Since 1500 UTC on Tuesday, second-placed Biotherm have gained nearly 250 nautical miles. The lead is still significant - at 170 miles - but certainly far less secure than earlier in the week.

The reason the gap is shriking so signifcantly and quickly is certainly largely due to the weather patterns in the southern latitudes of the Roaring 40s.

Kevin Escoffier's Holcim-PRB has essentially out run the favourable weather system it had been enjoying and is now nosing against a ridge of high pressure with much lighter wind conditions. There is nothing to do, and no other option, but to watch the rest of the fleet - still in stronger conditions - bring the wind forward with them. It should get closer yet as the boats approach the scoring gate, likely on Monday.

The current ETA for the Leg 3 scoring gate - a north/south line along 143-degrees east longitude - is noon UTC on Monday 13 March.

Practice in Paradise
Nelson's Dockyard Antigua: The stand-alone Round Antigua Race was scheduled today, Wednesday 8th March, as the curtain-opener for the Superyacht Challenge Antigua. Instead the Superyacht Challenge Antigua Race Committee made the best of the light to moderate breeze, providing a short 8nm course off the South Coast of Antigua. This was a practice race for the magnificent superyacht fleet. The scoring series for the Superyacht Challenge Antigua starts on Thursday 9th March.

The 121ft Dykstra sloop Action scored bragging rights today, finishing the practice course two-minutes ahead of the 148ft Dubois sloop Gitana. Action was also nearly ten minutes ahead after ORCsy time correction. The 148ft Dubois ketch Catalina, the 112ft Sparkman & Stephens sloop Kawil, and the Oyster 82 Zig Zag, all came out to go through the motions.

Two of Great Britain's most accomplished sailors, Shirley Robertson, and Ian Walker are part of the afterguard on Action under the leadership of Boat Captain Angus Fuller.

Solo woman leading Golden Globe with 200-year-old weather routing
Racing yachts around the world use computerised weather routing programs to optimise courses against satellite weather data. It's the norm! Both are banned in the Golden Globe but the current leader and only woman in the race, South African Kirsten Neuschäfer, found the perfect solution for her best route home to Les Sables d'Olonne after rounding Cape Horn.

She consulted Ocean Passages of the World with its 200-year-old weather routing charts, historical weather and suggested routes from the original clipper sailing ships. Following that advice is now paying strong dividends sailing through the tricky horse latitudes! She sailed out to the east and is now in a commanding windward position as she reaches the South East Trades ahead of the rest of the fleet.

Launchings
Wally 110 Wally is proud to announce the sale of the first hull of the new wallywind110 sailing yacht to a passionate loyal client, member of the Wally family for a long time.

The project once again unites judel/vrolijk & co naval architecture with interior and exterior lines penned by Wally team and Santa Maria Magnolfi design firm. This collaboration created a yacht showcasing Wally's characteristics of simplicity and elegance, while offering beguiling pace and stability.

The wallywind110 is a true hybrid offering the volumes and comforts of a deckhouse yacht, but with a flush-deck that features the spirit and the performance of a racing boat.

The raised saloon configuration and terrace-on-the-sea concept maximise elegant living space, while the seductive lines will deliver fast, comfortable passages and a turn of speed around the buoys.

The huge 80sqm cockpit is on a single level and fills the full beam of the boat, this alone features the same volume that can be found on board the most innovative 150 feet sailing yachts.

Layout is completely customisable, with seating and dining for up to 15 people.

With the engine room tucked away below the saloon, the stage is set for a huge open-plan space that combines dining, lounging and even working in style. A skylight runs the full length of the low-profile coachroof, while coachroof windows and hull windows turn this into a sun-soaked living area.

Cirrus

As Cirrus nears her launch over at James Betts Enterprise - expected in July of 2023 - we're revisiting her conception to explore why she is what she is, and how her various characteristics fit the mission we defined with her owners during the design process.

While the Cirrus' architectural style celebrates mid-century yacht design, the deck, hull, mast, and boom are comprised of carbon-fiber composite structures.

The biggest twist was a shift in the exterior aesthetic of the yacht–originally aimed as a sleek Grand Prix-style Club Racer and taking a 180 degree turn towards Spirit of Tradition style. Our clients (a husband and wife team) were looking for a big step in luxury and style above their current cruising boat, a sporty 46-foot cruiser from a well-respected US brand. Their eyes had initially bent toward European brand, modern-style yacht-think Solaris, X-Yachts, and Swans-and we initially built a preliminary design for a sleek, spare, modern 57-footer with a plumb stem, wide wedge-shaped hull featuring a hint of a chine in the quarters. These choices would have made a great boat, but fate often takes us in new directions.

While seeking bids for this new yacht, our clients noticed from their home deck overlooking the beautiful waters of Rockport Harbor a parade of classic yachts sailing in and out of the iconic cove. At the end of the harbor sits the renowned boatyard of Rockport Marine, known for some of the most beautiful wooden boats in existence, including some of our design (Goshawk/Zemphira [hull, built]; W-46's Zebra, Mustang, Arion, and Nashua [built]; Hoi An [maintained], to name a few).

Trinity

Reichel/Pugh Design No. 288, 45' Performance Cruising Trimaran Trinity, is a custom trimaran completely designed in-house, constructed at New Zealand Yachting Developments, with an interior plan by R/P and styling and furniture detailing by superyacht masters Design Unlimited. A thoughtful adaptive design filled with beautifully integrated accessibility features to enable single-handed cruising and racing. A hydraulic mainsheet, furling main and jib and powered winches provide safe and barrier-free sail handling. She launched December 2022, was trialed by the owner Terri Nelson in Waitemata Harbour, Auckland before the new year and is scheduled to deliver home to Southern California February 2023.

Owner Terri Nelson fell for sailing on a 14-foot Hobie cat and went on to develop her blue water skills during yearly trips to the Caribbean and South Pacific for over a decade. "I became enamored by the art of sailing," Terri explains. In reflecting on the impetus of her new trimaran, "eventually, I transitioned from crutches to a wheelchair and it became more difficult to 'monkey around' on a boat or board. Parenting became my next pleasure and a new wonderful chapter opened ashore. Sailing, however, never left the back of my mind and I began to dream about building a wheelchair accessible boat."

The new 44-foot Balance 442 is the smallest model in the Balance fleet (44 to 75 feet) but still offers all of the attributes that founder and President Phil Berman deems essential in a performance cruising cat – moderately light weight, narrow hulls, daggerboards, a powerful rig, and simple elegance throughout. Built in South Africa, the 442 will sail closer to the wind than most cruising cats due to her high-performance daggerboards and will reach and broad reach at 10 to 13 knots. Read more.
