Winning Group 73rd JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff Championship, Races 3 & 4
Click on image for photo gallery.

JJ Giltinan The two short course races on Day three of the Winning Group 73rd JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff Championship produced close racing on the track, and laid a wonderful platform for a close contest over the remaining five races of the regatta on Sydney Harbour.

With a light Easterly breeze on hand for the first of the two races, the Smeg team of Michael Coxon, James Dorron and Tom Anderson led all the way over the two-lap course to defeat Big Pete (Sean Langman, Ed Powys and Rhys Mara) by 12s, with Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Dave O'Connor, Trent Barnabas and Tom Quigley) a further 11s back in third place.

Finport Finance (Keagan York), the series leader going into today's racing, finished fourth followed by Noakes Youth (Tom Cunich) and Andoo (John Winning Jr).

The breeze went more towards the North East and freshened a touch to 8-10 knots.

In a race which produced a close battle for the lead throughout the entire two laps of the course, the Big Pete team made up for its narrow loss in the earlier race to narrowly defeat Shaw and Partners Financial Services by 7s, with Andoo (John Winning Jr, Seve Jarvin and Sam Newton) another 6s back in third place.

Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price) finished fourth ahead of Yandoo (John Winning) and Smeg.

After the first four races of the nine-race championship, Big Pete and Smeg share the lead on 14 points, followed by Andoo on 16, Shaw and Partners Financial Services and Finport Finance 18, Yandoo 25, Rag & Famish Hotel 27, Lazarus (Marcus Ashley Jones) 29, Balmain Slake (Henry Larkings) 41 and Germany's Black Knight (Heinrich Bayern) on 43.

With two more short course races to be sailed tomorrow on Sydney Harbour, the overall position is unlikely to become any clearer for the overall position in the championship, particularly as 'current' discards will be included in net totals. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Tense times in the south
It's an interesting day in The Ocean Race with quick moving weather making for a day of transitions in the southern latitudes.

The big winner over the past 24 hours is second placed Biotherm, who have gained over 30 miles on Team Holcim-PRB.

At the other end of the spectrum, 11th Hour Racing Team appear to be in danger of dropping off the back of a weather system and are making a noticeable dive to the south, toward the southern edge of the race course defined by the ice exclusion zone.

A reduced sail wardrobe due to ongoing repairs has meant the team has struggled to hold on with the chasing pack and stay in the same weather system.

According to the latest weather routing, the ETA at the first scoring gate is nearly a week away on 13 March. Incredibly, the routing shows compression in the fleet, with the teams arriving much closer together than they are today.

Just wow! - SWS Yachts
SWS Yachts Remember those early sailing superyachts... high-chested, heavy, aluminium and sometimes even welded steel hulls? Yet not many years later the fact that Southern Wind's latest 108-footer is an all-carbon, all-high tech oceanic beauty, one that also screams high performance is almost to state the obvious...

At the Southern Wind Shipyard in Cape Town the first of a new generation of yachts is now taking shape. It's a case of evolution not revolution, in keeping with the brand's carefully calibrated and distinctive core DNA. But while the visible differences between the Southern Wind 108 and its predecessors might seem subtle at first, this is a significant milestone for the shipyard. It's their first model conceived and engineered from the outset as a diesel-electric hybrid.

Bacardi Cup Invitational Regatta 2023 - Day 2
Racing at the 96th Bacardi Cup, March 5-11, 2023, was abandoned today, March 7, due to an inconsistent breeze.

After a postponement ashore, the Race Committee was hopeful racing would get underway, but ultimately the decision was taken to abandon racing.

Racing for the seventy-three Star teams is scheduled to resume on Wednesday, March 7, with race 2 starting one hour earlier at 1100 hours, immediately followed by race 3.

Paul Cayard is one of many renowned sailors who mark the Bacardi Cup on their calendar year after year and returns for the 96th Bacardi Cup. Cayard has enjoyed a hugely successful career, spanning Whitbread Round the World Race victory and second in the Volvo Ocean Race, seven World Championship titles, is a seven-time America's Cup competitor, a two-time Olympian and holds plenty more to his name. However, despite forty-five years of sailing the Star and numerous Bacardi Cup appearances, Cayard has yet to add the Bacardi Cup to his illustrious trophy cabinet.

Cup Spy : US reveal new direction; Swiss go cycling at 45kts; Siesta time for Luna Rossa
What happened in the Cup:

- American Magic sailed off Pensacola in the first of their AC40's. It was just their second sail, as they work through commissioning issues - of which there were relatively few - mainly around an unexpected battery change. American Magic decommissioned their AC75 on February 4.

- Luna Rossa sailed from Cagliari, managing to catch two different breezes either side of a siesta, and had two good sailing sessions in their custom designed LEQ12.

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing had a good sailing session in their AC75, off Barcelona, hitting speeds of up to 45kts. They used cyclors on the substantially altered AC75 deckout, for the first time. We have several images cut from RFS showing how the new setup works.

- Emirates Team New Zealand did not sail, either their AC75 or AC40 or LEQ12, and are not expected to sail until after SailGP Christchurch has concluded. They last sailed on February 28 in the LEQ12 and AC40-OD.

- INEOS Britannia did not sail their AC40 One Design. Their LEQ12 test boat T6 remains under repair following a capsize and battery fire on February 8. They last sailed their AC40-OD on March 1.

- No further news from the Orient Express Team (formerly K-Challenge).

Irish Cruiser-Racers Get Snapshot Of Success As Highlight Of ICRA Conference in Dun Laoghaire
Ever since Fintan Cairns of Dun Laoghaire and the late Jim Donegan of Cork brought the Irish Cruiser-Racer Association into being twenty years ago, ICRA's Annual Conference & AGM has provided a fascinating overview of the state of play in this most popular yet notably diverse sector of our national sailing scene.

But although the ICRA Commodore (currently Dave Cullen of Howth) will have to guide the formal and sometimes very technical aspects of the 2023 meeting through to the optimum conclusions this morning in the Royal St George YC, there's no doubting the fact that the mood will really leap to life when there's a presentation which, in effect, brings the sea and sailing right into the room.

Last year in Dun Laoghaire's National Yacht Club, with the social aspects of sailing only just emerging from the Pandemic Lockdown, there was a stroke of genius with Fastnet Race overall winner Tom Kneen of the JPK 11.80 Sunrise being spirited across from Plymouth in a private plane to tell of his "secret formula" in boat choice, crew selection and campaign structure.

There are signs that the global boating market is returning to normal after sales surged during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Online marketplace, Boats Group, reports that the total number of boats sold worldwide decreased last year for the first time since before the pandemic.

The change towards more typical market conditions emerged in 2022 as the total number of boats sold dipped by just 4.3% compared to the same period pre-pandemic in 2019. By comparison, boats sold in 2020 and 2021 were down 15.9% and 11.8% respectively, compared to 2019.

The overall value of vessels dropped below 2021 by roughly 16%, inching closer to values seen in 2020. However, 2022 total values remained higher than before the pandemic boating boom, totalling more than US$11 billion in sales. The global average boat price was 29.5% higher than in 2019 and was comparable to 2021.

According to marine lending company, Trident Funding, boat loan applications were up by 80% in 2022 compared to 2021. Trident reports loan amounts were smaller than in 2021, primarily driven by rising interest rates.
