Contributions welcome, send to Evan Walker and His Team win Warren Jones Regatta Perth, Western Australia: Sydney skipper Evan Walker and his crew from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia have won the 2011 Warren Jones International Youth Regatta, they emerged the winners after a day of hard fought match racing, with the final against Perth's David Gilmour going the full five races. It was a day packed with rivalries, trans-Tasman, trans-Australia, and trans-Sydney Harbour, and tack-for-tack, gybe-for-gybe racing. In an east versus west contest in one all-Australian semi-final, David Gilmour beat the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron's David Chapman 2 - 1. The other semi was that age old rivalry Australia versus NewZealand, with Walker scoring two straight wins over Auckland's Will Tiller, last year's winner of the event. With a steady 15 to 20 knot sea breeze blowing for the final in the afternoon, the stage was set for a great competition, and Walker against Gilmour didn't disappoint. Rarely more than a boat's length apart through all five races, Walker opened the scoring, before Gilmour levelled it, and the race trading went on until the fifth race was won. For Walker and his crew of Edward Hackney, Will McKenzie, Tom Scardifield and Henry Kernot, this was their second regatta win in two weeks, having collected the Colin Mullins trophy last week, in a contrastingly light wind event, beating David Gilmour by a more comfortable 3 - 1 margin in that series. In today's racing the Sydney team seemed to have the advantage upwind, while the Perth crew was stronger under spinnaker, so with a downwind final leg Walker's advantage was never safe. The Warren Jones International Youth Regatta was hosted by the Royal Perth Yacht Club, and organised by Swan River Sailing. -- John Roberson Final results: 1. Evan Walker, AUS, CYCA Fleet Builds In The Transatlantic Race 2011 Covering 2,975 miles from Newport, R.I., to the Lizard in England, the race will begin near the New York Yacht Club's Harbour Court clubhouse in Newport, with three staggered starts from June 26 to July 3. Beau Geste, a Farr 80, skippered by Karl Kwok, and with Gavin Brady, an America's Cup helmsman aboard. PUMA's mar mostro, a new 70-foot Volvo Ocean Race entry, skippered by Ken Read and designed by Juan Kouyoumdjian. Entries Surge for 31st Edition of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta As always, the more laid-back bareboat class is historically one of the largest divisions at the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, and it appears that trend will continue for 2011. With nearly four-dozen entries thus far, the "bareboaters" will once again be in the thick of the action. With over fifty entries to date, however, the lion's share of entries will be racing in the CSA Monohull classes, and it's a truly international field, with competitors flying home flags from France, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Italy, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Turkey, the United States, and a host of Caribbean nations. While the sailors themselves represent a wide and varied background, the respective yachts also form a diverse and eclectic fleet. At the smaller end of the spectrum are the Melges 24, Budget Marine/Gill, as well as a host of boats in the 30- to 35-foot range, including Tanner Jones's J/30, Blue Peter; the Beneteau First 310, Americano Café; a pair of swift Melges 32s, David West's Jurakan and Mark Plaxton's Team INTAC; Todd Mahoney's Sigma 33, Overtime; Schrijverke, a Victoire 34; No Face to Face, a J/105; and the radical Kiwi 35, Wild Devil. On the other end of the scale, Sir Peter Harrison's sensational Farr 115, Sojana, a perennial favorite at the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, will once again be soaring around the racecourse. But Sir Peter will have plenty of company in the big-boat divisions in a fleet that includes another big Farr design, Peter Buckley's 98-foot I-Sea; a Swan 100, Varsovie; a Swan 82 and 80, Nikata and Team Selene, respectively; a Carbon 82, Aegir II; and Bella PITA, a custom 75-footer designed by Bill Tripp. Back On The Express Train! Incredible what a difference 24 hours can make when you are doing 700 miles a day! From shorts and no t-shirt at night, to looking for that second layer of thermals in the daytime. From flying fish to albatross. From teasing out every .25 of a knot of speed to get 20 knots in flat water, to sailing in defensive mode, de-tuning the boat and driving cautiously to keep the speed below 38 knots! Its now in the early 30 knots of windspeed and we are broad reaching with 3 reefs and the staysail, still with plenty of power to do a steady 35 knots of boatspeed. Although we entered the Roaring Forties this morning its still sunny with clear visibility and a single set of waves. So great conditions and a few albatross have come for a distant inspection of the boat. It was great to see the excitement of some of the guys... Thierry Chabignet and Erwan Tabarly, both top Figaro sailors, (Erwan is the nephew or Eric Tabarly), were sitting together and enjoying their first sailing in the South, something they have probably both read about and dreamed about since they were kids sailing in Brittany. We are on the Southern Ocean Express, though unfortunately there are engineering works ahead with a high pressure in our route. We are going to have to find a way around that barrier and Pascal, Juan and Marcel on the shore are working on the options, as the weather forecasts evolve. But right now its full steam ahead, and its a nice bonus, if perhaps a temporary one, to be getting ahead of Groupama's position again. Just about to serve up dinner, Norwegian Chowder, should be just right served with the last loaf of fresh bread, specially double baked for us by a baker in Lorient, which has been delicious. Its vacumn packed slice white from tomorrow - cannot be on a French boat without du pain! www.brianthompsonsailing.blogspot.com Buoyant Start To 2011 For Gay Sailors The RYA is the national body for all forms of boating within the UK and has recognised the Sailing & Cruising Association's ongoing commitment to encouraging people to get on the water, providing a range of quality and safe water-based activities, attracting new club members and volunteers, engaging with the local community and demonstrating good governance and club management. The RYA sees the support and future development of clubs, such as the Sailing & Cruising Association, as essential to the continuing popularity of all forms of boats and boating and as key deliverers of quality training, safe racing and access to the water. Commenting on the news, Reggie Blennerhassett, Club Commodore said: "This is the very best start to the new year we could have wished for. 2010, our 30th anniversary year, saw many highs, including multiple medals at the International Gay Games, winning silver in the 2010 Inshore Jog Series and record membership numbers. Now, 2011, with news of the RYA awards shortlist, is already proving to be another exciting year for the club". The announcement of the overall winner will take place at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show, taking place at Alexandra Palace, London on 5th & 6th March. ISAF In-House Certification These sail lofts produce sails for not only a large number of the ISAF classes who invoke IHC in their class rules, but also for yachts racing under the IRC rating system. From January 1 2011 the IRC rating system now requires sailmakers submitting sail data for an IRC Endorsed certificate for British owned boats, to be a licensed manufacturer under the ISAF In-House Certification scheme. Pinnell and Bax Sails, who are based in Northampton in the UK and produce sails for a wide range of ISAF Classes, has become the latest sail loft to join the ISAF IHC scheme. Following the successful audit at the end of November 2010, P&B now join the growing list of sailmakers signed up to the ISAF In-House certification scheme. With an increasing number of ISAF Classes realising the benefit of adopting In-House Certification, the ISAF IHC scheme continues to grow. Any ISAF Classes wishing to utilise the ISAF IHC scheme for certification of sails are urged to contact the ISAF Technical Department. MNAs and manufacturers wishing to become involved or find out more about the ISAF In-House Certification scheme should also contact the ISAF Technical Department , visit the ISAF IHC microsite or check out the ISAF IHC Facebook page for further details.
