Roaring along at top speed
Team Holcim-PRB continues to hold a 500-plus mile lead on leg 3 of The Ocean Race, but the pursuing pack of three is making small gains by pushing forward at record-breaking pace.

11th Hour Racing Team posted a 544.63 nautical mile run over the 24 hours ending in a period ending just after midnight Saturday night. Should that figure be ratified by the World Speed Sailing Record Council (WSSRC) it would be a new certified record for the IMOCA class.

With the potential record-breaking run, Charlie Enright's team has pulled into a dead heat with Biotherm for second place, with Team Malizia just 50 miles further back.

At the head of the fleet, on board Kevin Escoffier's Holcim-PRB team, the crew has been working to fix a tear in their J2 headsail, applying a patch over the damaged material.

GUYOT environnement - Team Europe has No time to lose
GUYOT environnement - Team Europe has reached Cape Town and brought the yacht safely back to port after the suspension of the third leg of The Ocean Race. The crew experienced four days of tension after delamination of a hull bottom panel was detected 600 nautical miles from Cape Town in the Southern Ocean. With careful sailing through initially heavy seas and later shallow water, and with a makeshift repair, they managed to return to port without outside help. In the meantime, the yacht has been craned out of the water so that investigations and the drawing up of a repair plan can begin. Meanwhile, the sailing crew is already looking ahead, formulating the firm intention to return to the race with full power.

Meanwhile, the sailing team is drawing up the plan for the next stages. A re-entry into the third leg of The Ocean Race is very unlikely, even with a very quick repair. With the late arrival in Itajaí/Brazil, there would be no time to lift the yacht out of the water after the gruelling journey through the Southern Ocean.

"We want to join the fleet in Itajaí as soon as possible," says skipper Benjamin Dutreux. "We are happy that the team was expecting us here. Everyone wants the boat back in the water as soon as possible. We now have to wait for the investigations and see how long the repairs will take." It was a long return to Cape Town as the situation meant it was not possible to go faster than ten knots.

International one design elite shine in 39th Primo Cup-Trophee Credit Suisse
Primo Cup-Trophee Credit Suisse Idyllic conditions in sunshine and up to 10-knot steady southwesterlies allowed the 300+ sailors from 12 nations in three classes (J/70, Smeralda 888 and Longtze Premier) to exploit to the max their boats' potential at the 39th Primo Cup-Trophee Credit Suisse, 2-5 March, organised by Yacht Club de Monaco in partnership with Sebago, Monaco City Hall and SLAM who every year awards the top three teams with sailing gear.

The 'Primo' also doubles as the fourth and final act of the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series for the J/70s. YCM's Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio's G-Spot appeared all but unbeatable in the first four races before conceding victory to the Italians on Alice, with Alessandro Molla's Viva completing the podium. In the Corinthian category, the Swiss on Aiola snatched victory from the Brits on Brutus with the Swiss on Rhubarbe-3Nuits.com. in 3rd.

With a record 15 Smeralda 888s, competition was tough with father and son Vincenzo and Achille Onorato racing against each other. Achille's Canard a l'Orange finally got the better of his father (Mascalzone Latino) who came 3rd, with Class President, Charles de Bourbon des Deux-Siciles (Vamos mi Amor) 1st.

It was a case of Swiss domination for the dozen Longtze Premiers, led by a peerless performance from Jarmo Wieland's Shensu to win all six races. Torsten Muller's crew on Le Petit Frere d'Emile Bleu and Stefen Schneider's Outsider were 2nd and 3rd.

Season winner of the 10th Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series of monthly regattas from November to March after 24 races is Ludovico Fassitelli (Junda), followed by Samuel Poons (Charisma V) and Graeme Peterson (Moonlight II).

Next up at YCM on 25-26 March is the first Women Leading and Sailing, a100% female regatta on J/70s, and a date is already set for the 40th Primo Cup-Trophee Credit Suisse: 7-10 March 2024.

Ceeref Come From Behind Winner At The 44Cup Oman
Usually racing on the 44Cup between the high performance owner-driver one designs is tight with ties or just single points separating the leaders. At the 44Cup Oman, opening event of the 2023 season and hosted out of Muscat's Al Mouj Marina by Oman Sail, perhaps due to the strong conditions of the first three days, the leaderboard was clearly defined going into the final day with Nico Poons' Charisma seven points clear of Igor Lah's Team Ceeref powered by Hrastnik 1860, in turn eight ahead of John Bassadone's Peninsula Racing.

Unlike the previous three days when conditions built to 20 knots with a vicious short sea, today racing took place in light 5-8 knots, more typical of the Omani venue. Fortunately the wind held, enabling PRO Maria Torrijo to complete the full racing schedule.

The next 44Cup event will be Marstrand, Sweden over 28 June-2 July.

44Cup Oman Overall Ranking After 12 races
1. Team Ceeref powered by Hrastnik 1860, 41 points
2. Charisma, 43
3. Aleph Racing, 48
4. Peninsula Racing, 49
5. Team Nika, 58

18ft Skiffs Winning Group 73rd JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff Championship, Race 2
Balmain won the handicap section of Race 2. Click on image for photo gallery.

18ft Skiff In complete contrast to yesterday's light, variable wind conditions, Race 2 of the Winning Group 73rd JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff Championship was sailed in an 18-20-knot North East wind on Sydney Harbour today and produced some of the best and most spectacular racing action for the spectator fleet following the championship.

After being locked in a two-boat battle for the entire first lap of the course, reigning champion Andoo (John Winning Jr, Seve Jarvin and Sam Newton) got the upper hand over yesterday's Race 1 winner, and Australian champion, Finport Finance (Keagan York, Angus Williams and Phil Marshall) to score a brilliant victory.

Andoo's winning margin was 57s over Finport Finance with third placed Lazarus (Marcus Ashley-Jones), Rob Bell and Jeronimo Harrison) a further 1m21s further back in third place.

Sean Langman's Big Pete finished in fourth place ahead of Smeg (Michael Coxon), Germany's Black Knight (Heinrich Bayern), Yandoo (John Winning), Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price), Balmain Slake (Henry Larkings) and Shaw & Partners Financial Services (Dave O'Connor).

Despite today's defeat, Finport Finance leads the points table after two races with a total of 3 points, followed by Andoo, Smeg and Lazarus all on 7, Big Pete 11, Yandoo 12, Shaw & Partners Financial Services 13, Rag & Famish Hotel 16, Balmain Slake 19 and Black Knight 22.

Racing resumes on Tuesday (March 7) when Races 3 and 4 will be sailed over two short courses. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Focus on the sailing - Bavaria Yachts
Bavaria Yachts Maurizio Cossutti is a world-renowned designer of some very fast racing yachts. Similarly his latest creation for the growing mid-size cruising yacht market was never going to be anything but an outstanding performer...

If you sail Bavaria yachts on charter holidays you may have noticed that over the last few years their new monohull models have become increasingly rewarding to sail. The credit for that is partly due to Maurizio Cossutti, the naval architect responsible for the CLine boats, but it's also down to a new way of thinking that has taken root within the company when it comes to creating the concepts for new models.

So how do they do it? If you've imagined a complex workflow of intense discussions between senior technicians, sales directors, naval architects, purchasing managers, manufacturing engineers, interior designers, business analysts and two dozen other stakeholders, you're not entirely wrong.

Shirley Robertson's Sailing Podcast
Shirley Robertson Shirley Robertson's Sailing Podcast continues this month with one of offshore sailing's most active campaigners, a sailor who's career spans two decades at the highest level of the sport and includes a record equaling five Vendee Globe starts. Alex Thomson, widely known for his Vendee campaigns sailing a series of iconic Hugo Boss IMOCA, has done much to raise awareness of offshore sailing and with his team, has been responsible for some of the most innovative developments the monohull IMOCA Class has ever seen.

Obviously, much of Thomson's discussion in this two part podcast centres around his various Vendee Globe campaigns, but in this first episode there's much discussion about Thomson's early career path, time spent sailing with Sir Robin Knox Johnston and the result of his time spent with British business tycoon Sir Keith Mills...:

In the second part of this podcast the chat about Thomson's Vendee campaigns continues, , but there's much discussion about his series of daring stunts that have netted him over 10million views on YouTube alone.

The Next Generation Takes the Lead at the 43rd St. Maarten Heineken Regatta
The famous Around the Island Race at the 43rd St. Maarten Heineken Regatta took place this year on Saturday, the penultimate race day. PRO Mark Townsend had made an early call to shift the race, which traditionally takes place Friday, by 24 hours to take advantage of the stronger wind forecast for the 31.6NM route.

With the wind from the east, and ranging from 18 knots with gusts up to 20 knots, there were looming clouds threatening some short sharp squalls and some 'liquid sunshine' for the competitors. But the sun prevailed and Saturday drew the crowds on the water, many in awe of the mighty Volvo 70s and 65s dwarfing the sports boats and Diam fleet. There were cheers of support for many of the local teams as they did their pre-start preparations, sailing past family and friends watching them from the water against the backdrop of the stunning coastlines of both Dutch and French St. Maarten/Martin.

With quick efficiency, the race committee got every start off cleanly.

Finally, it was the start of the biggest beasts to set off from the start line to play catch up, eventually meeting up with the rest of the fleet by the leeward turning mark off the south coast of the island. Seeing hundreds of yachts racing downwind, with their colorful spinnaker kites set, was a treat for the spectator boats, who scrambled to keep clear from mixed fleet and odd angles between the asymmetric and symmetric kites across teams.

There were a few early disasters, with J-Aguar's bright green kite remaining knotted for a full mile before the crew got it sorted. Even the fully-professionally crewed Volvo 70 I Love Poland had an inadvertent broach downwind. "I suddenly heard a shout" said crew member Boris Michniewicz, "then it just happened. Luckily everyone was OK and then we just worked really hard to make up for the lost distance."

With a long reach down the eastern side of the island, it was after just 2 hours, 33 minutes and 57 seconds that VO70 I Love Poland crossed the finish line, with the fastest Diam, Cry Baby just 20 minutes later in 2 hours, 53 mins and 54 seconds. In CSA Class 2 it was Hooligan Racing who won their fleet, with Flying Jenny taking the honors in Class 3. With just one point now splitting the leading Melges 24 against the Cape 31, this will be a fleet to watch on the final day.
