RORC Caribbean 600 - An International Affair
The 14th edition of the RORC Caribbean 600 starts on Monday 20th February at 11:00 AST (UTC-4). Seventy boats from all over the world are ready in Antigua for the non-stop 600nm race around 11 Caribbean islands. With over 550 sailors from 30 nations taking part, the RORC Caribbean 600 is truly an international affair. On Monday 20th February, the first warning signal will sound at Fort Charlotte for an epic race featuring a highly competitive and varied fleet of IRC Offshore boats, Class40s and Multihulls.

Entry List

11:00 AST Start - IRC One & IRC Two Twenty eight teams racing in IRC One and IRC Two will be first away. The largest start features a bounty of different boats racing under the IRC Rating System.

Among the favourites for IRC One are Andrew & Sam Hall’s Lombard 46 Pata Negra (GBR) and Laurent Courbin’s First 53 Yagiza (FRA). The highest rated boats in IRC One are two Akilaria 40s designed by Marc Lombard; Stephane Bry’s Sirius II (FRA) and Marek Culen & Miroslav Jakubcik’s Sabre II (SVK). Jon Desmond’s Mills 41 Final Final (USA) is one of the fastest boats in IRC One.

The largest boat in the first start is the famous 73ft ketch Pen Duick VI (FRA), skippered by Marie Tabarly. Two other classics include the Whitbread winner Briand 58 L’Esprit d’Equipe (FRA), skippered by Lionel Regnier and the Nielsen 59 Hound (USA), owned by Tom Stark. Challenger 72 Discoverer of Hornet (GBR) is sailed by the Royal Navy. The smallest boat in IRC One is RP37 Taz (ANT); owner Bernie Evan-Wong has skippered boats in every race. 2009 winning skipper Adrian Lee will be racing his Swan 60 Lee Overlay Partners II (IRL). Antiguan Farr 65 Spirit of Juno (ANT) skippered by David Hanks has the youngest sailor in the race - Emily Guillard is just 15 years-old. -- Louay Habib

In addition to Hound, Marie Tabarly's classic 73ft ketch, Pen Duick VI (FRA) is also competing. With a storied history in ocean racing, Pen Duick VI has a new team on board since her completion of the RORC Transatlantic Race, as Marie selects the crew for the Ocean Globe Race later this year.

Race Committee approves 11th Hour Racing Team’s request to replace its seriously damaged foils
11th Hour Racing Team's request to replace its foils in Cape Town due to serious damage sustained in the first two legs of the Race, has been approved by the organization’s Race Committee. The team’s spare foils will be put into the boat over the weekend, and the 60-foot race boat is due back in the water on Tuesday, February 21.

Mark Towill, 11th Hour Racing Team CEO commented, "We are pleased with the Race Committee's decision to allow us to replace the damaged foils, which will allow us to compete in the next Leg in a safe and seamanlike manner. We will continue to work with our design and engineering teams on a repair plan, and look forward to getting Mālama back in the water, and back to racing next week."

Three days after arriving in Cape Town, having completed Leg 2 of The Ocean Race 2022-23, 11th Hour Racing Team discovered, through surface Non-Destructive Testing, that both foils on its 60-foot race boat had suffered serious damage.

The team’s designers and engineers concluded that the extent of the work required to repair the foils would take a number of weeks, which meant the boat would not have been able to set off on Leg 3 of The Ocean Race, due to depart Cape Town on Sunday, February 26. The team therefore applied to have the damaged foils replaced.

The Race Committee approved the request, stipulating that the team must notify the IMOCA Measurement Team of the change - which has been done - and comply with any measurement requirements they may request. The replacement foils have previously been measured by the IMOCA Measurement Team, and 11th Hour Racing Team is working with the Class Measurers to ensure that the boat is rule compliant before departure.

11th Hour Racing Team is currently lying in second place overall after two legs of The Ocean Race 2022-23. Leg 3 starts on Sunday, February 26, 2023, destination Itajaí, Brazil.

SAILGP Cancels Second Day Of KPMG Australia Sail Grand Prix
After racing today at the KPMG Australia Sail Grand Prix in Sydney, a major weather event occurred that has resulted in significant damage to the wing sails and at least one boat at the SailGP technical site.

As far as we know, no one was seriously injured during the incident. As a result of the damage, SailGP has had to cancel racing for the second day of the Sydney event.

A full assessment of the damage is underway but it is likely some of the future SailGP events may also need to be delayed.

Further information will be released as it becomes available.

Sailjuice Series Oxford Blue
Davis & Rayner score 420 hat trick at the Oxford Blue Alice Davis and Oliver Rayner made the most of strong breeze for the final event of the Selden SailJuice Winter Series, the Oxford Blue...

After a predominantly light airs season for the Selden SailJuice Winter Series, the Oxford Blue delivered a windy climax to the nine-event competition.

Robust breeze averaging 20 knots with a few bigger gusts, courtesy of Storm Otto, made for an exciting and hectic race track on Farmoor Reservoir on Saturday 18 February. It was perfect weather for Alice Davis and Oliver Rayner (Draycote Water SC), to show what a well-sailed 420 can do in blustery conditions.

These top 420 sailors and 2022 GBR representatives at World Youth Championships blitzed the event. skilfully keeping their 420 at full throttle throughout the day for three straight wins.

It was a good outing for the Hollowell SC team, as Jack Lewis & Morgan Smith raced their 2000 into second place ahead of club mate Arran Holman aboard an RS Aero 7. This made Holman the top finisher at the RS Aero Winter Championships taking place at the event.

In total 85 entries from 37 classes competed at the Oxford Blue, another diverse entry from RS800s and Musto Skiffs to Toppers, with a few more unusual classes such as the Sunfish and Dart 16.

With a good consistent breeze, nearly half the fleet saw sustained speeds in double figures as recorded by the SailRacer GPS trackers.

Ben Schooling (Musto Skiff) was fastest at a sustained 12.61 kts, closely followed by local Carl Tagoe (Contender) 12.48kts and in third the RS200 of Ben Whaley and Lorna Glen recorded an impressive 11.97 kts.

On handicap-adjusted speed, Ben and Lorna were top, followed by Series stalwart Val Millward (Challenger).

The prizegiving for the Selden SailJuice Winter Series always attracts one of the biggest crowds at the RYA Dinghy & Watersports Show which takes place in Farnborough this weekend. The prizegiving starts at 1015am on the Main Stage, on the Saturday morning of 25 February, soon after doors open for the weekend.

Harken Youth International Match Racing Cup
After four days match racing in light and challenging conditions on Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour, Josh Hyde and his crew have won the 2023 Harken Youth International Match Racing Cup. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and its Mastercard Youth Training Programme were well represented on the podium, with Jack Frewin and Mason Mulcahy with their crews in second and third respectively.

Third time was a charm for just-turned nineteen year old Hyde who has competed in this event twice before; clearly he and his team of Jack Manning, Zach Fong, Cody Coughlan and Ryder Ellis were in “race mode” after last week also placing third at the Hardy Cup Sydney International Match Racing Regatta.

The entire four-day regatta was plagued by light winds, with crews often kept ashore with delayed racing, and with long breaks between races waiting for the breeze to settle. None of the crews seemed to mind the dose of summer sunshine and social time ashore at the RNZYS Clubhouse.

Final Results:
1. RNZYS- Josh Hyde, Jack Manning, Zach Fong, Cody Coughlan, Ryder Ellis
2. RNZYS - Jack Frewin, Ollie Gilmour, Oliver Loyd, Sophia Higgott
3. RNZYS- Mason Mulcahy, Hugo McMullen, Luis Schneider, Harry McMullen, Sam Scott

Rondal’s automated, carbon fibre composite wing sail has been selected as a finalist for the 2023 JEC Innovation Awards

Developed by superyacht spars and sailing systems company Rondal with project partners Curve Works and Artemis Technologies, the new wing sail concept aims to increase the market share of wind-propelled yachts.

The wing sail created is also thought to be the world’s first large structural composite wing produced using a single adaptive mould with integrated heating to manufacture individual curved wing skin panels from pre-preg materials which are then bonded together.

Rondal and Artemis Technologies used simulation technologies to evaluate the wing design before the build of a 9m tall sailing prototype.

A sailing test program also allowed the project team to validate the wing’s handling characteristics versus its predicted performance, providing data for the next stage optimisation of the wing control systems.
