Serious Damage Found To 11th Hour Racing Team's Foils
Once on the ground, the foils on Mālama were removed from the boat and have undergone surface Non-Destructive Testing. These non-invasive techniques determine the integrity of the structure of a boat and its appendages, and can be used to discover issues without causing any damage to the structure.

The survey found serious damage to both foils, and after consultation with the yacht's design team, the advice given is that the foils will require extensive repair before going back into service. This work cannot be completed onsite in Cape Town before the boats leave on Sunday, February 26, for Leg 3 of The Ocean Race.

The consensus is it would be unsafe to venture further in the race with this set of foils, particularly with the next leg being a five-week-long marathon through the Southern Ocean.

The team has formally requested permission from the Race Committee to replace the foils onboard Mālama, so they can continue to compete in a safe and seaworthy manner.

Race Committee receives request from 11th Hour Racing Team to replace foils
The Race Committee of The Ocean Race received a request to replace foils for Leg 3 from 11th Hour Racing Team at 0900 UTC on 16th February.

The Race Committee is currently reviewing the technical reports supplied with the request.

The Rules of The Ocean Race (Notice of Race 6.4) specify teams are only allowed to use one set of foils in The Ocean Race. However a team may apply for permission to replace a foil that "suffers serious damage that cannot be repaired before a Leg start".

The statement from 11th Hour Racing Team can be found here.

Kirsten Neuschafer first around Cape Horn in the Golden Globe Race
It's been an eventful month of February for Kirsten Neuschafer (ZAF), finally rounding Cape Horn at 2020 UTC 15th Feb. She moved to first place after 150 days of racing and since had to face two storms, breaking a spinnaker pole and taking down her massive twin sail alone on a Minnehaha rocked by the residual swell.

With the final 10,000 miles to Les Sables on her mind and sensing pressure on her beloved yacht, she sails a conservative course further and longer towards the north-east to avoid the stronger winds and sea in the first front on February 7th, trailing warps and nursing Minnehaha in the ensuing storm. Then finally a southerly course South of Diego Ramirez Islands creating sea room the Chilean coast before finally heading up for a long look at the infamous final Cape of the course. A treasured memory! .

With over 240,000 miles sailing experience she knows this area very well sailing many times as a commercial skipper to Antarctica. But this is the first time she crosses the Pacific solo to get around. The famous rock was surrounded by squalls that forced her to make continuous adjustments, poling the Yankee and reducing sails when necessary. Despite all the action, she could hardly speak during her safety call because of the cold shortly before rounding.
