Globe40: Express Victory In Grenada for Melodie Schaffer and Tom Pierce
February 13th at 22.09 local time (02.09 UTC on February 14th) the Canadian crew WHISKEY JACK crossed the finish line of leg 7 of the GLOBE40 at the entrance to the port of St Georges in Grenada. An express victory for this 2123 miles leg covered in 8 days and 8 hours at an average speed of 10.6 knots, with the 24 hour event record broken on this occasion with 347 miles at an average speed of 14.5 knots. A great recognition for the Canadian skipper Mélodie Schaffer who showed all her energy while several breakdowns in the previous stages had prevented her from claiming the podium. The Dutch from SEC HAYAI will follow during the night as well as the Americans from AHMAS. The general ranking should remain unchanged with a final transatlantic leg to Lorient which may yet decide the fate of the two leaders in the general ranking.

After 8 months of the event, 8 legs with the prologue in Lorient and the Grand Depart in Tangier, 25,000 miles sailed, the question remains. MILAI Around the World, which is in retreat due to its accident and the work in progress in Argentina, is still in the race with a good ranking but can no longer claim victory in the general standings. The Dutch team of SEC HAYAI are showing a superb regularity with an extremely well prepared and motivated team which often compensates for an older support than the others, and should remain in the lead in the general classification at the end of this stage 7. Barring any unforeseen events, their American competitor AMHAS should lose a point at the end of this coefficient 1 leg but remains a serious threat on the last coefficient 2 leg, a long transatlantic course to Lorient which can prove complicated at this time of year. Finally, the Italo-Americans of GRYPHON SOLO2 and the Canadians of WHISKEY JACK have shown with their 2nd place before the jury in Recife for the former and their victory in Grenada for the latter that they are still capable of disrupting the ranking calculations of the overall leaders. A final exciting stage lies ahead with the arrival of the great competition and the great adventure in Lorient for this first edition of the GLOBE40.

Lanzarote: Kiwis lead Nacra 17s, Kantor & Sills top iQFOiL
Tuesday was the start of part 2 of the Lanzarote International Regatta. After two days of the dusty Calima breeze from the Sahara, today the sunshine returned to the Canary Islands, and 10 to 14 knots of wind were blowing for the opening day of Nacra 17 and iQFOiL racing.

Nacra 17: High-flying Kiwis
The Nacra 17 fleet encountered big rolling waves, but there were also some big strategic and tactical decisions to be made as the wind strength and direction shifted across the course.

Micah Wilkinson & Erica Dawson (NZL) won two of the three races to take an early lead ahead of Mateo Majdalani & Eugenia Bosco (ARG) who won the last race of the afternoon. The Argentineans sit in second, on equal points with Laila van der Meer & Bjarne Bouwer (NED) in third.

Sarah Newberry-Moore & David Liebenberg (USA) hold 10th place overall, and are looking to push further up the fleet on Wednesday.

Nacra 17 (after 3 races)
1. Wilkinson/ Dawson, NZL, 2 points
2. Majdalani/ Bosco, ARG, 4
3. Van der Meer/ Bouwer, NED, 4

iQFOiL Women (after 2 races)
1. Kantor, ISR, 7 points
2. Aguilar, MEX, 8
3. Spychakov , ISR, 8

iQFOiL Men (after 2 races)
1. Sills, GBR, 3 points

Two British skiff golds and a Spanish 1-2 in the 470 of Lanzarote International Regatta
Winds of 13 to 19 knots for three Medal Races in poor 'Calima' visibility. Last gasp victory for Xammar & Brugman in the 470 Victory for Great Britain in men's and women's skiff fleets.

Part one of Lanzarote International Regatta reached its climax with three enthralling medal races in the 470 Mixed, 49erFX and 49er fleets. The thick dust of the Calima wind from the Saharan Desert limited visibility but it failed to put a limit on the drama.

49er
1. James Peter / Fynn Sterrit, GBR, 25 points
2. Logan Dunning Beck / Oscar Gunnm NZL, 47
3. Keanu Prettner / Jakob Flachberger, AUT, 50

49er FX
1. Freya Black / Saskia Tidey, GBR, 16 points
2. Jana Germani / Giorgia Bertuzzi, ITA, 19
3. Stephanie Roble / Maggie Shea, USA, 21

50th Rolex Fastnet Race: Winners return
With the Rolex Fastnet Race this year celebrating its 50th edition, many past overall winners and winning boats are returning.

Most significant of those who have previously lifted the race's Fastnet Challenge Cup is the 2021 IRC Overall winner, Tom Kneen's JPK 11.80 Sunrise. She led a superb effort when, after a decade of French domination, Britain finally wrestled back control of the Royal Ocean Racing Club's premier event with a 'perfect' scoreline, winning the top three spots under IRC Overall (Sunrise, plus with RORC Commodore James Neville's Ino XXX and Pata Negra) just as France had done in 2013 and 2015.

As previously reported, London-based Swede Niklas Zennström, who won back-to-back races in 2009 and 2011 aboard his all-conquering Maxi 72 Rán II is returning with a Carkeek-designed CF520 Rán 8.

Many past winners are also back from France. Didier Gaudoux won in 2019 on Lann Ael 2, but for this race has replaced his JPN39 with a more modern, powerful, semi-scow, water ballasted, dreadnought-bowed, twin rudder affair: Lann Ael 3, a MN35 design by Vittorio Malingri.

Cherbourg's own son, Alexis Loison, who in 2013 with his father Pascal on their JPK 10.10 Night and Day became the first doublehanded crew to win the Rolex Fastnet Race outright. He is again entered on the JPK 10.30 Leon. Loison has always sailed this race doublehanded and of the last five has won IRC Two Handed four times.

Another returning French winner is Géry Trentesaux, who in 2015 claimed the Fastnet Challenge Cup in supreme style with his JPK 10.80 Courrier Du Leon. Since winning eight years ago, Trentesaux, who is Vice President of the Yacht Club de France, competed in 2021 aboard the Class40 Courrier Redman, in 2019 on his own JPK 11.80 Courrier Recommandé (winning IRC Two) and in 2017 on the TS42 catamaran Guyader Gastronomie. -- James Boyd / RORC

Timber Boat World Mourns Hobart's 'Battery Point Kid
Bill, leaning on the boom-Photo thanks to https://www.batterypointhall.org.au and Foster Family Bill Foster Much-loved master wooden boat builder and life-long Battery Point resident William "Bill" Foster died on Friday February 3, aged 90, after suffering a stroke.

Far beyond the city village of early 20th century Battery Point and its cluster of boat and shipbuilding businesses, Bill brought to the world the pure joy of making high craft an art, ever since his early teens.

From modest beginnings, never lacking family love, Bill found in himself a deep and abiding fascination for working with wood, primarily in helping to create some of the most famous yachts ever built in Australia.

At age 12 Bill recognised in himself his natural skills and built the determination, perseverance and problem-solving abilities critical to a career as a boat builder.

He also had another great advantage. Aged just 14, he was invited by his uncle, Ernest Jack "Jock" Muir, to join what was to become the best-known marque in Australian yacht and boat building. Bill, as Jock's first apprentice, was drenched in the culture, knowledge, art and craft of designing, building and sailing race-winning, strong and seaworthy boats, many of which are maritime jewels today.
