Caribbean Multihull Challenge
Simpson Bay, St Maarten: In a spectacular conclusion to what had been a sensational fifth edition of the Caribbean Multihull Challenge Race and Rally, the racing classes and rally fleet converged along the southwestern shores of St. Maarten today to wrap up three remarkable days of sailing. Together, under colorful, billowing spinnakers and with spray flying in easterly trade-wind gusts of well over 20 knots, the combined fields of racing and performance-cruising catamarans and trimarans powered to the finish line in company through the roiled waters of Simpson Bay.

There were winners, of course, in all four of the racing divisions, with two boats headlining the action and taking home Swiss watches from longtime CMC sponsor Oris Holstein: Pierre Altier's Diam 24, Cry Baby, which won the Diam 24 division and was named the regatta's Most Worthy Performer for registering the most convincing victory in the event's most competitive class.

Greg Slyngstad's Fujin, which won today's CMC 27 Mile Around Island Circle Race sponsored by Amstel Bright with a time of 2h, 10m, 22s, earned their timepiece for capturing the CMC Trifecta with first places in all three of the event's offshore contests. The 53-foot cat also won Friday's Around Saba Dash sponsored by the Sint Maarten Tourism Bureau and Saturday's Caribbean 60 Mile Multihull Sprint around St. Barth's, sponsored by FKG Rigging.

In the other racing classes, Arthur Banting's Tryst won CSA 2 and Georges Coutu's La Novia was the winner of CSA 3. In the rally fleet, at this evening's prizegiving ceremonies at the St. Maarten Yacht Club, Ron Boehm's beautiful blue Bob Perry-designed Antrim 52, Little Wing, received the award for the Estimated Time Challenge and the Bingo Card Challenge, with Darren Seltzer' colorful Neel 45 trimaran, Panda Rosso, a close second.

Globe 40 headed to Grenada
At 15:00 hours local time Sunday, the GLOBE40 skippers took the start of the 7th and penultimate leg of the event, which will lead the fleet to the island of Grenada in the West Indies. The crews cast off from the brand-new Recife Marina to make for the start line, in the middle of the harbour, just off the famous Marco Zero Square, Recife's historic centre, where giant screens have already been installed for the upcoming carnival.

In this next 2,000-mile leg, which kicks off with a passage through the doldrums, the competitors are set to be swept along to their destination in the West Indies by the E'ly trade wind. On paper then, a fairly simple leg awaits, though it comes with the risk of heavy shipping along the coast and fierce competition, with just 3 points separating the top two crews in the overall ranking: the Dutch on SEC HAYAI and the Americans on AMHAS, who won the previous leg. Meantime, Japanese team MILAI Around The World is making a concerted effort to complete repairs in Argentina and rejoin the race.

The racetrack for this next leg will stretch across Brazil, from offshore of Fortaleza in northern Recife to Belem at the gateway to the Amazon River, French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, Venezuela, and finally Trinidad and Tobago. A prohibited zone has been set up across the entire course, making it impossible for the competitors to hug the coast due to the abundance of debris swept along offshore of the Amazon River and to the heightened security risk.

Harken Electric Winches Make Sailing Gloves Last Longer
Harken Electric Winches Electric winches have been called the best non-liquid attitude adjusters ever created for the sailor. If you've recently solo-cranked a main to the top of a rig and enjoyed that first-thing-in-the-morning combination out-of-breath / crook-in-the-neck feeling, you can imagine how electric winches put smiles on faces like no other equipment you can add. Here's a secret: If you own manual Harken winches, they were designed up front to be electrified right now. All that's needed is an extended center drive shaft, a motor with mounts, electrical wiring, and switches. It's easier than you might imagine. You don't have Harken winches? No worries. We make a full range of electrics with geometries and motor sizes to make replacement your legacy manual models easy. You've suspected electric is the way to go for quite a while, haven't you? Let's go! February was made for electrifying winches.

Think electric winches might be right for you? Check out this refit project including new Harken Electric winches. It just might convince you.

Harken has a Quick Start path to push-button tacks and halyard hoists. It starts right here.

11th Hour Racing Team and Team Malizia win the weekend
The American-flagged 11th Hour Racing Team pushed into the lead on leg 2 of The Ocean Race over the weekend.

Skipper Charlie Enright and his crew held their nerve over an early decision to take a westerly routing on the descent down the Atlantic and the choice paid dividends on Saturday afternoon and overnight into Sunday.

The team wakes up on Monday morning at the top of the rankings as the closest boat to Cape Town, just bow forward on Team Holcim-PRB and Team Malizia, who was the other big gainer over the weekend.

Skipper Will Harris and his team had also subscribed to the 'west is best' theory and went from a fifth place ranking, over 220 miles behind the leader, to being right back in the thick of things with the tight group of 11th Hour Racing Team, Holcim-PRB and Biotherm.

Sliding down the table over the past 48 hours, GUYOT environnement - Team Europe undoubtedly lost a few miles due to a blown out spinnaker, but more significanlty, found themselves in light winds, positioned too far to the east.

Leg Two Rankings at 0800 UTC - 6 February 2023
1. 11th Hour Racing Team, distance to finish, 2027.6 miles
2. Team Holcim-PRB, distance to lead, 18.4 milesv 3. Team Malizia, distance to lead, 28.8 miles
4. Biotherm, distance to lead, 70.1 miles
5. GUYOT environnement - Team Europe, distance to lead, 272.6 miles

SailGP will not visit the UK in 2023
The event has been held at Cowes, then for two years at Plymouth, but in 2023 the series will not hold a UK event, according to the SailGP calendar, recently published.

In 2023 and early 2024, the span of 'season 4', there will be European venues including Cadiz and Taranto, with three more European venues to be announced.

Skipper of the Great Britain SailGP team Ben Ainslie said: "There is nothing like racing in your home country with the shoreline filled with home fans.

"The Plymouth Sail Grand Prix was always one of the team's favourites on the championship circuit, but as the league continues to grow and with two successful Great Britain Sail Grands Prix events under our belt, I am hopeful SailGP will return to UK shores in future seasons."

Julien di Biase, COO, SailGP, said: "It was a competitive bid process for cities to host SailGP in Season 4 and there has been an overwhelming response.

"It was an extremely difficult decision and there are a number of criteria and factors that have to be considered – not just in the individual host city bid but also looking at the season as a whole.

"Unfortunately Plymouth was unsuccessful in its bid application but following two successful Great Britain Sail Grands Prix, SailGP hopes to return to UK shores in future seasons. -- Rob Peake

Royal Cork's 2023 Quarter Ton Cup Notice of Race is Published
The Notice of Race for the upcoming Quarter Ton Cup in Crosshaven, County Cork, July (13–15, 2023) has been released by Royal Cork Yacht Club and marks the return of the Cup to Cork Harbour for the first time in 36 years.

The event will be based on three-day windward/leeward race courses. The NOR also states that at least three races will be held daily.

The large Quarter Ton fleet from the south coast of England is anticipated to visit the Cork Harbour race track, and it's also anticipated that the harbour's active fleet will compete.

As Afloat reported earlier, the event's awarding to RCYC follows a resurgence in Quarter Ton interest in Crosshaven over the past few seasons.

No issue on Wednesday
Pretty minor medical stuff tomorrow, in theory just outpatient, will preclude doing the Wednesday issue. A reading chair and a few good books awaits post surgery, along with the expectation of sympathetic family serving me dinner and fawning over me. Fat chance, but worth a try.

I tried to get the surgeon to put in writing that "no heavy lifting for a week" specifically includes doing dishes. No luck. But this growing old stuff is not for the faint of heart.
