Ed Wright secures second Finn Gold Cup after no racing on final day in Miami
Britain's Ed Wright has won the Finn Gold Cup in Miami, USA, after no racing was possible on the final day on Biscayne Bay. Domonkos Nemeth, from Hungary, went one better than 2022 and took the silver while European Champion, Miguel Fernandez Vasco, from Spain took the bronze.

The fleet was sent out an hour early to try to make the best of the wind conditions, but the breeze was already dying and after a short wait AP over A was signalled to end the regatta as no more breeze was expected until after the time limit.

Fernandez Vasco was elated with the bronze, coming just four months after the European title.

Finn fans will see that the TT2 Finn has now won the last two Finn Gold Cups. Gear breakdowns will be published in the coming weeks.

Gus Miller, the oldest person ever to sail a Finn Gold Cup finished 53rd overall. The highlight was Race 7 when he rounded the top mark in the top 20 to whoops from those watching this remarkable sailor. He finished 33rd in that race. Even at 87 years old his mark roundings were flawlessly smooth, and he even had his luff curve recut prior to the event, critiquing it with his experienced eyes. He inspired admiration and awe from all the other competitors, many of whom helped him get afloat each day.

Through the week the fleet has been joined by other icons of American Finn sailing, John Bertrand did some coaching, Cam Lewis turned up and recounted many old and gaudy stories to the younger sailors and Peter Harken also showed up for a while.

Ed Wright remains world champion for 17 months with the next Finn Gold Cup heading back to another old Finn haunt, at Anzio in Italy, in May 2024.

Finn Gold Cup

International Fleet Set for RORC Caribbean 600
Over 70 teams from 16 different nations are expected for the 2023 RORC Caribbean 600, with a dozen or more boats racing in the inaugural RORC Nelson's Cup Series. Racing action for the new series starts on Valentine's Day Tuesday February 14th. The final event of the four-race series will be the 14th edition of the RORC Caribbean 600, starting on Monday February 20th .

Multihull - High Velocity Showdown
Two 70ft racing trimarans are readying for a multihull showdown; Giovanni Soldini's Maserati Multi70 (ITA) returns having missed out in 2022 to Jason Carroll's Argo for Multihull Line Honours by just two minutes. Argo is in the Pacific and not taking part this year, but MOD70 Zoulou (FRA) with Erik Maris at the helm will provide formidable opposition to the Italian stallion. Six Multihulls are expected to be in action, including Gunboat 60 Tosca (USA) co-skippered by Ken Howery & Alex Thomson, as well as Christian Guyader's ORC 50 Guyader Saveol (FRA) skippered by Gwen Chapalain.

IRC Super Zero - Six-Gun Shoot Out
IRC Super-Zero promises to be a thrilling six-gun shoot-out for round the world canting-keel raceboats, including four Volvo 70s: American skipper Roy P. Disney racing Pyewacket (USA), The Polish National Foundation's I Love Poland (POL), HYPR Ocean Racing skippered by Seamus Fitz Patrick (AUT), and a RORC team racing Green Dragon (AUT) skippered by Johannes Schwarz. Two VO65s will also be in the IRC Super Zero mix: The Lithuanian team on Ambersail (LTU) and an Austrian entry on Sisi (AUT) skippered by Gerwin Jansen.

IRC Zero - Fireworks Expected
The largest class for the RORC Caribbean 600 is IRC Zero with 13 entries.

Class40 - Multinational Battle
A dozen or more Class40s will be racing in the RORC Caribbean 600, including three of the latest designs skippered by Italian entries.

RORC Nelson's Cup Series - High Aspirations
While the RORC Caribbean 600 offshore race is now well established as the 'must do' offshore race for the Caribbean, the RORC Nelson's Cup Series is a new initiative by the Royal Ocean Racing Club. The four-race series which includes the RORC Caribbean 600 has attracted over a dozen entries. The RORC Nelson's Cup Series will pitch classic yachts such as Pen Duick VI against one of the latest hi-tech offshore racers - Ran, and just about everything in between. The series is also open to yachts that are not entered for the 600-mile offshore event. -- Louay Habib/RORC

Warren Jones International Youth Regatta
A hot Perth sun greeted some of the world's best youth match racers to Raceday 1 of The Warren Jones International Youth Regatta. Winds on the light side of moderate offered sailors little respite from the heat as the racing began…

As thirsty sailors prayed for the arrival of the Freo Doctor, the first flight brough immediate drama and upset. Despite a dominating opening hand, Nick Egnot-Johnson was upset to the tightly competitive Lucy Alderson. Just ahead of Lucy going into the top mark, Egnot-Johnson's bowman, local boy Kai Colman, fell overboard during the set. Lucy pounced, Egnot-Johnson circled back, race over, an exuberant celebration by the all-female team across the finish line.

With a full round robin completed, the race team and volunteers did a great job to capitalise on the glamour conditions ahead of a week of light winds forecast.

Head turner
Let top Italian sailmaker and racer Paolo Semeraro loose with a boldly innovative designer like Shaun Carkeek, give them a wide-open brief to just 'do it better' when it comes to contemporary cruiser-racer design and no surprise that the end result really is kinda special...

2023 ORCsy Rules and VPP now available
The Offshore Racing Congress (ORC) is pleased to announce that its 2023 rules and VPP for the racing of Superyachts are now available at orc.org/superyacht

This sophisticated system specifically designed for the vast array of boat types of over 30 meters in length that compete in Superyacht regattas around the world has been continually updated to recognize the unique features among these extraordinary yachts.

There are several new features in the 2023 ORCsy VPP:

- A new term in the Dynamic Allowance that is based on the upwind Sail Area/DSPL ratio and is dependent on True Wind speed. This helps reduce rating biases between performance-oriented and non-performance designs.
- An increase in Tacking Allowance to give more allowance to low-powered yachts.
- A further fine tuning of keel induced resistance has been performed for both shoal and deep draft fins.
- A more accurate assessment of ketch rigs.
- The allowance for powered systems used for hoisting and dropping sails has been revised for tacking, gybing and hoisting manoeuvres.
- The use of lifting centerboards is now more accurately treated.
- The effect of windage of the superstructure has been increased by 20% recognizing the greater wind resistance for those boats with large superstructures.

There are seven events on the 2023 SYRA calendar where the ORCsy will be used. These include the following:

- Antigua Super Yacht Challenge - 6-12 March
- St Barths Bucket Regatta - 16-19 March
- Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta - 6-10 June
- Palma Superyacht Cup - 21-24 June
- Safe Harbor Race Weekend - 11-12 August
- Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup - 3-9 September
- Ibiza JoySail Regatta - 28 September-1 October

Snipe Class International Racing Association Hall of Fame
The SCIRA Hall of Fame honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Snipe Class and Snipe competition.

The Class is honoring three categories: Sailing, Technical Design and Contributors, --people who made significant contributions to the Snipe Class.

Damian Borras Camps (1963-) (ESP)
Jerelyn Biehl (1960-) (USA)
Antonio Espada (1949-) (ESP)

IRC Measurement Manual updated
The international IRC rating rule has always been a self-measurement system, and official measurement is not a rule requirement unless the boat needs an Endorsed IRC certificate. The IRC Rating Authority takes great care in checking the data supplied, even for standard certificates. However, there is the option of having the data taken by a trained measurer and the owner can then go racing safe in the knowledge that their rating is based on accurate data rather than, for instance, standard hull data.

There is a network of individuals around the world, approved by their relevant local IRC Rule Authority, available to weigh and measure boats for IRC rating. The IRC Measurement Manual is a comprehensive guide to help ensure good and consistent measurement practice by IRC measurers. It includes advice on the general role of the measurer; equipment and techniques; issues to be aware of, and methods for measuring specific data. There are also appendices covering IRC Endorsement, bulb weight, list angle for moveable and variable ballast, and measurement of foils.

The manual has recently been updated with additional information and is available on the IRC website

GC32 Racing Tour 2023 announced
Competition for the one design flying catamarans of the GC32 Racing Tour will take place over three events and two venues in 2023.

As it has done since 2016, the GC32 Racing Tour will start in Riva del Garda at what many consider is the ideal venue to race foiling sail boats. With its northern end nestled within the foothills of the Italian Alps, Lake Garda is renowned for its strong winds but it is the combination of wind and flat water that enables teams to achieve record speeds. In past years several GC32 teams have reached 40 knots - warp speed for a 32ft long yacht.

Competition then continues in Lagos. While this harbour on Portugal's Algarve coast was not known in yacht racing circles before the GC32 Racing Tour first visited in 2018, since then it has become a firm favourite with the GC32 teams.

As in 2022, two events will take place in Lagos, a 'pre-Worlds' over 21-25 June, culminating in the GC32 World Championship over 10-14 July. The GC32 remains the sole foiling boat permitted to run an official World Sailing-recognised World Championship and this is traditionally the event attracting the strongest turn out.

2023 GC32 Racing Tour
24 - 28 May: GC32 Riva Cup, Riva del Garda, Italy
21 - 25 June: GC32 Lagos Cup, Lagos, Portugal
10-14 July: GC32 Lagos World Championship, Lagos, Portugal
