Light winds mix fleet on Day 4 at Finn Gold Cup in Miami
Light winds mixed the fleet on the fourth day of the 2023 Finn Gold Cup in Miami. Ed Wright from Britain extended his lead to 11 points from Domonkos Nemeth from Hungary, while Miguel Fernandez Vasco, from Spain is back up to third. The race wins went to James Golden, from the USA, and Wright.

With winds never more than 8.-9 knots and patchy lanes all over the course the conditions played havoc with the fleet and many sailors paid a heavy price. On the flipside there were some new names at the front.

The 2023 Finn Gold Cup ends on Tuesday with two more races scheduled. Most boats in the top 10 have a high score already, and only Hay now has only single digits. With more light winds forecast, another challenging day of racing in Miami beckons.

Results after 8 races
1. Ed Wright, GBR, 11
2. Domonkos Nemeth, HUN, 22
3. Miguel Fernandez Vasco, ESP, 26
4. Laurent Hay, FRA, 34
5. Federico Colaninno, ITA, 35
6. James Golden, USA, 59
7. Rodion Mazin, USA, 61
8. Pedro Trouche, BRA, 62
9. Marko Kolic, ITA, 68
10. Pedro Lodovici, BRA, 74

Sailing will not be included in Paralympic Games for LA28
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) delivered their verdict today, stating that they had received a number of strong bids to be part of the Games in Los Angeles.

World Sailing CEO, David Graham, said, "We fully respect the verdict of the IPC and recognise the difficulty the IPC Board faced throughout this process.

"However, we must also acknowledge that this is an extremely disappointing day for our whole sport and, particularly, Para Sailors around the world. Despite this setback, our commitment to our Para Sailors, to the continued growth of Para Sailing, and to the wider para sport movement will only grow stronger.

"We know a life on water unlocks so many opportunities for disabled people, we know how inclusive Para Sailing is, and we are determined that Para Sailing will continue to go from strength to strength."

https://www.sailing.org/2023/01/30/world-sailing-pledges-to-continue-to-strengthen-para-sailing/

* The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) has today expressed its profound disappointment at the International Paralympic Committee's decision not to reinstate sailing to the Paralympic Games for LA28.

The IPC's Governing Board reached the decision after assessing applications from International Federations vying for a place on the LA28 Games plan, which currently considers 22 Paralympic sports (the same number as Rio, Tokyo and Paris) but with 33 sports seeking inclusion for LA28 for just two places.

From the very start of World Sailing's #BacktheBid campaign, the RYA and fellow Member National Authorities have committed their unwavering support to the reinstatement of sailing in the Paralympic Games. By demonstrating the accessibility, inclusivity, and equity of our sport, the #BacktheBid campaign made the IPC's decision even more difficult than it already was.

Cup Spy : Test day in Auckland. Slingsby reflects on American Magic
Emirates Team New Zealand launches two AC-40's and runs into a 20-25kt breeze and confused sea state off North Head. Tom Slingsby gives an objective assessment of his new team American Magic.

What happened in the Cup - January 25, 2023:
- Alinghi Red Bull Racing last sailed January 24
- INEOS Britannia last sailed January 23
- American Magic sailed today.
- Emirates Team New Zealand sailed today.
- Luna Rossa last sailed January 22, 2023.
- No further developments from the late entry French K-Challenge. An announcement was expected in mid-late January according to an earlier announcement by the Late Entry team.

Today there was a long delay between the launch and departure of the AC-40 One Design. Looking towards the team base, the launch crane could be seen in the extended position, but curiously with two AC-40 masts also visible.

While we hoped that we would see two AC-40s sailing against each other, it transpired that the two boats were launched together as part of a synchronisation check ahead of the start of a two-boat testing and match racing program.

Selden SailJuice Winter Series - Enter The Tiger!
The Fireball duo of Dave Hall & Paul Constable have never yet missed a John Merricks Tiger Trophy at Rutland Sailing Club, and the Fireball duo are among the early entrants to have booked their spot at the eighth event in the Selden SailJuice Winter Series. Hall & Constable are back to see if they can win the Tiger which they conquered in 2021.

Taking place on 4 & 5 February, the dinghy classic consists of a series of back-to-back races on the Saturday and a Pursuit Race on the Sunday. Once bitten by the Tiger, sailors come back year after year in anticipation of another hotly contested event backed up by great hospitality at Rutland Sailing Club. Principal race officer and Olympic silver medallist David Wilkins has a well deserved reputation for running exciting and fair racing on England's largest reservoir.

Six Nations Weekend

Up to four club-based RS21 keelboats are expected to take part in the competition, which also coincides with the first weekend of Six Nations rugby fixtures. "We'll be off the water well in time for the England v Scotland match on Saturday afternoon," says David. The Tiger is also open to other small keelboats and catamarans as well as the usual spread of dinghy classes.

As ever for Rutland, there's a sit-down dinner on the Saturday night and a chance for old friends from across different fleets to catch up before the summer season gets going again and people disperse back into one-design competition.

Phil Sharp: "A Great Concept For The Vendee Globe"
Britain's Phil Sharp announced this week that he will have the third Sam Manuard designed IMOCA to be built by Black Pepper Yachts. One of the most successful Class40 skippers of recent years, is also a highly talented mechanical engineer. With his OceansLab he plans to highlight the hydrogen fuel cell technology system which he co-invented and is presently commercialising for the leisure and commercial marine sectors. His plans are to launch his boat in late July for trials and training in August and September before taking part in the Defi Azimut, the Transat Jacques Vabre and the solo Retour a la base race back to France and thereafter the full Imoca Globe Series. Tip & Shaft spoke to the La Rochelle based skipper.

Flesh out some details of your funding package, how are you financing your programme and what is your budget? The way we have structured the boat (cost 5 million euros) is to look for one third capital to fund the boat against two thirds of debt. We started off the investment round with a seed investor who previously supported our Class40 project who put up a lump sum to kick off the project and that really helped us sell the project to other investors. Gradually we managed to meet our capital requirement, the boatyard Black Pepper are an investor in the project – and will own a share of the boat - because they really believe in in the project and the technology. They are interested in embracing the hydrogen technology as well for other production vessels and prototypes they will be producing. It is a strong collaboration with Black Pepper. The other two thirds is financed by a bank which is a classic way of doing things. And we also had to demonstrate we had a base support from sponsors. We will be announcing some partners over the next few weeks. Nealry all those partners almost have some connection with the project either in the hydro space or technology transfer. We are really looking at sharing our vision of decarbonising the marine sector.

Marlow Ropes will be supplying innovative, sustainably made and recyclable running rigging for the eleven-strong fleet in the upcoming Clipper 2023-24 Race. Made with 73% recycled or sustainably manufactured raw materials, this will be the first fleet and ocean race where this type of recycled and sustainable rigging is used.

The announcement marks over 20 years of partnership for the two organisations, spanning ten editions of the Clipper Race. Throughout this relationship, Marlow Ropes has been able to research, develop and refine its products in the ultimate R&D setting- a 40,000 mile circumnavigation where matched ocean-racing yachts face extreme conditions and intense racing.

Ahead of the Clipper 2019-20 Race, each Clipper 70 was rigged with a mainsheet made from a Bio-Dyneema® core and a rPET polyester cover, in order to test the durability of these new fibres in the world's most hostile environments- from blistering heat to gale-force winds and freezing temperatures. The success of the product now means that the Clipper Race fleet can operate with more sustainable running rigging in the next edition.
