Finn Gold Cup
After two days of very cloudy conditions, the Sunshine State started to live up to its name again on Bacardi Race Day, the third day of the 2023 Finn Gold Cup in Miami. Britain's Ed Wright continues to lead the regatta, though race wins from both Domonkos Nemeth, from Hungary, and Federico Colaninno, from Italy, have closed the gap on Wright, and created a fascinating three way battle at the top with two days of light winds expected.

Sunday's forecast was for less wind, more sunshine and higher temperatures. On arrival at the race area there was a nice 13-14 knots warm breeze, which shifted and decreased through the day, Race 5 was sailed under Oscar for free pumping, but this was removed for Race 6 as the wind dropped to 8-9 knots and much more cloud cover.

Pedro Trouche, from Brazil, led at the first top mark in race 5, but Spain's Miguel Fernandez Vasco moved from second at the top to a nice lead by the gate, He held it up the second beat, but on the final downwind Nemeth closed the gap and moved into the lead just before the finish. Wright crossed in third.

Results after 6 races
1. Ed Wright, GBR, 7
2. Domonkos Nemeth, HUN, 11
3. Federico Colaninno, ITA, 12
4. Miguel Fernandez Vasco, ESP, 18
5. Laurent Hay, FRA, 26
6. Rodion Mazin, USA, 34
7. Paul Mckenzie, AUS, 39
8. Pedro Trouche, BRA, 40
9. James Golden, USA, 45

Finn Gold Cup Day 3

Biotherm leads the Ocean Race fleet into the doldrums with Malizia making up miles
Paul Meilhat's Biotherm was the first boat to feel the impact of the doldrums overnight as his crew saw their speed plummet from 14 to 4 knots just after midnight UTC.

It wasn't long before Team Holcim-PRB, 11th Hour Racing Team and then GUYOT environnement - Team Europe found themseves in similar circumstances.

In fact, at 1200 UTC today, the only boat moving with pace towards Cape Town is Team Malizia, still charging in from behind at about 14 knots. The distance to leader has been halved from over 230 nautical miles at 1800 UTC last night to just over 100 miles at 1200 UTC on Sunday as the fleet compresses.

It could be a while yet, as still positioned furthest to the west, Malizia skipper Will Harris has the potential for an easier crossing, while nearly 200 miles to the east, GUYOT skipper Robert Stanjek and his team might be in for a painful couple of days, if the forecasts are to be believed.

And grouped in the middle of the east-west spread, and furthest to the south, are Biotherm, Team Holcim-PRB and 11th Hour Racing Team, each hoping that the next cloud and storm cell will bring the momentum they need to transition out the other side.

For all the right reasons - J Boats
J/Boats Excellent and reliable all round performance, safely and easily driven in bad weather, unremittingly well-built and with those legendary resale values... when J Boats step up into the long distance cruising market it's always going to be good...

J Boats is so well-known for building racing yachts that it's easy to forget they also produce a lot of cruising boats with the same well-defined character. The original J/24 is the world's most successful onedesign racing keelboat with about five and a half thousand launched worldwide, but it was initially conceived, designed and built as a family boat, primarily intended for fast coastal cruising. And the J/112E, which won the last ORC/IRC combined World Championships, is another cruising boat that just happens to be a brilliant performer on the racecourse as well as a comfortable, easy-to-handle offshore voyager with a fully fitted interior.

Throughout the four decades that separate those two designs, J Boats has introduced a dozen pure cruising models (as well as a lot of cruiser-racers and racer-cruisers) and launched more than 500 purpose-built offshore cruising boats in North America alone, with many more built by the J Composites shipyard in France that now plays a major role in the development process as well as building the boats under licence. The most recent pure cruising model, currently in production in France, is the blue water-focused J/45.

Globe 40: Ahmas Wins In Recife In The Brazilian Heat
The Anglo-American team AHMAS (Class40 # 127) crossed the finish line of leg 6 of the GLOBE40 in Recife today at 11:48 p.m. local time. After 20 days and 10 hours of racing and 3,803 miles covered (7417 km), Craig Horshield and James Oxenham brilliantly conclude a particularly difficult leg which put the GLOBE40 crews to the test. In the heart of Recife, the "Venice of Brazil", they inaugurated this evening the brand new RECIFE MARINA, a 250-berth marina in the center of Recife.

GRYPHON SOLO 2 and SEC HAYAI are expected on Sunday January 29, while the Canadian competitor on WHISKEY JACK should instead reach Recife on Tuesday. This short stopover will conclude on Sunday February 5 with the start of leg 7 towards the island of Grenada in the West Indies, 2000 miles in 8 to 10 days.

18ft Skiffs Australian Championship, Races 5 & 6
Smeg (Michael Coxon) was leading when the race was abandoned. Click on image for photo gallery.

18ft Skiffs The Finport Finance team of Keagan York, Angus Williams and Phil Marshall became the 2022-23 Australian 18ft Skiff champion after a controversial day when no racing was completed on Sydney Harbour today.

When racing was abandoned today, the championship then reverted to a four-race regatta and, under the sailing instructions of the championship, each team's worst performance could no longer be discarded and the four races sailed all had to be counted.

Finport Finance finished with a total of 10 points from the four races, followed by Smeg (Michael Coxon, Ricky Bridge, Tom Anderson) on 14.

Third placed Lazarus (Marcus Ashley-Jones, Rob Bell, Jeronimo Harrison) also finished on 14 points but Smeg took second place on a count-back.

Andoo (John Winning Jr, Seve Jarvin, Sam Newton) won two of the four races but was forced to include one of her seventh placings earlier in the regatta and finished fourth on 16, followed by Yandoo (John Winning, Fang Warren, Josh Porebski) 23 and Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Jim Colley, Max Paul, Tom Quigley) on 27.

It was an unfortunate situation, as going into today's final two races there were only five points (net) separating the top four teams and consistency was going to be essential as each of the four teams had one placing that they wanted to discard from an earlier race.

What could have been an exciting conclusion to the regatta, as four of the best 18 footer teams in the world battled for the title, was marred by the lack of wind which caused a one hour delay to start the day's racing, then the forced abandonment midway through the race.

Next week the Australian 18 Footers League will stage two events. The Supercup (Friday, 3 February 3) and the next heat of the Club Championship, on Sunday, February 5. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Caribbean Multihull Challenge
Caribbean Multihull Challenge Simpson Bay, St Maarten: The countdown is in full swing. A record-setting field of over 30 racing and cruising multihulls are in the process of gathering and preparing for the fifth running of the growing, prestigious Caribbean Multihull Challenge V Race and Rally, scheduled to take place from February 3-5. And as the fleet and the regatta continues to expand and evolve on this fifth anniversary of the only Caribbean event catering strictly to multihulls, so too does the CMC. This year, for the first time, not only is a new and exciting series of offshore races on the calendar, but the organization will also be hosting its inaugural rally for dedicated cruising boats, the CMC Shipyard Brand Turnkey Rendezvous.

First and foremost, the CMC has always been a highly competitive regatta fueled by the staunch easterly trade-winds for which the Caribbean is famous. And once again, it has drawn a select group of outstanding entrants eager to test their boats and their crews on this elite sailing stage.

In the "big-boat" racing category, the CMC is welcoming back a pair of catamarans that have enjoyed resounding success in the event: Greg Slyngstad's 53-foot Fujin, with an all-star crew from the Pacific Northwest led by Olympic Gold Medalist and recent National Sailing Hall of Fame Inductee Jonathan McKee, and Anthony McVeigh's superbly prepared 53-footer, 2 2 Tango. Nipping at their heels will be an impressive pair of newcomers to the CMC: Freddie Mills representing the Antigua Yacht Club aboard Cui Bono, a Gunboat 60, one of the best-known brands of performance cruising cats, and Aussie Guy Chester sailing Oceans Tribute, from the board of legendary catamaran designer Lock Crowther, which he sailed from Australia to race off St. Maarten.

These boats, along with their fellow competitors in the all-out racing classes, will this year be contesting a trio of distance races called the CMC Trifecta, which include the CMC 60-Mile Sprint, a blast to St. Barth's and back that's a holdover from previous events; the Around Saba Dash, a brand-new 52-mile power reach to the isle of Saba and back; and a perennial favorite of all sailors who come to St. Maarten to compete, the SXM Circle Race, the tricky 27-mile circumnavigation of the island, which always holds numerous surprises when it comes to currents, breeze and tactics. The winner of the Trifecta will receive a beautiful new Aquis Depth Gauge dive watch from longtime CMC supporter and sponsor, ORIS Swiss Watches.

Bacardi Winter Series
Three days in a row of perfect sailing conditions on Biscayne Bay, January 27-29, 2023, and a dream event for all, with fantastic breeze, sun and shoreside Bacardi bonhomie at Bacardi Winter Series Event 2.

A leaderboard shake-up saw all new leaders in the sportboats after today's racing, with J/70 glory claimed by John Heaton's 'Empeiria' and Drew Freides' 'Pacific Yankee' crowned in the Melges 24, whilst Harry Melges IV sealed victory with NYYC 'American Magic Team 1' in the 69F.

The change of breeze and flatter water called for a new race strategy, with the wind easing to 10-15 knots from the east and tapering off as the day unfolded. Quantum Sails shared their insights on the new weather pattern, before it was out to the racetrack with all starts getting away to plan.

The Bacardi Winter Series Event 2 wrapped-up with the Bacardi Happy Hour at Shake-A-Leg-Miami and prize giving celebrations.
