The Pier View Cowes wins Best Sailors Bar
Pier View Another two time winner! Congratulations to the owners, staff and patrons of this iconic bar that's right in the heart of British yachting... Cowes, Isle of Wight.

It's been a long time since your humble narrator has been there; it's moved higher on my bucket list after the voting this month.

We'll have a full report with quotes and photos early next week.

Slowly sliding south
It's been a tense first night as the IMOCA fleet has sailed south, away from Mindelo and towards the uncertainty of the Doldrums.

It was an exciting start, despite the light conditions, with close quarters action as the fleet leaves Cabo Verde en route to Cape Town.

Paul Meilhat's Biotherm is in the lead on Thursday morning, and along with Team Holcim-PRB and 11th Hour Racing Team, is gybing west away from Sao Filipe.

Further behind, Team Malizia is chasing hard, while GUYOT environnement - Team Europe, has fallen slightly further back, after leading the fleet around the starting race course.

"This is VMG (velocity made good) racing downwind between the islands," said Paul Meilhat heading into the night. "We made the choice to use the spinnaker off the start and it's worked well because we are in front of the others."

Finn Gold Cup
It's been a long time in the planning and a dream for the Miami fleet for an even longer time, but finally the 2023 Finn Gold Cup has been opened at Coconut Grove Sailing Club as a single canon was fired on the dock at the club.

The practice race was scheduled for 14.00 and despite the light and unstable winds, around 35 boats made the start and the race committee got in four starts before letting the fleet away. Federico Collanino, from Italy, made the best of the pin end and tacked away to lead round the first mark from Marc Allain des Beauvais, from France and Marko Kolic, from Italy. Most of the fleet carried on and sailed back to the club. A few went downwind only for the race committee to abandon the race.

With a few late entries, the registered fleet now numbers 58 Finns from 16 nations. There are also five U23 sailors taking part in addition to the older generation. The age range is huge from 17 to 87. As always the Finn Gold Cup is a celebration of life as well as of sailing.

Racing is scheduled to begin on Friday with two races each day for five days.

Traditionally Futuristic - RM Yachts
RM Yachts Fast and light, a mix of the finest traditional and environmentally-kindest modern materials, no wonder that 2022 Route du Rhum winning designer Marc Lombard is so proud of his successful association with RM Yachts

Walking around a boat show or a big marina, it's easy to conclude that all modern cruising yachts are basically the same. Then you'll see something like an RM yacht and realise that it's not true at all. Distinctly different from most of their peers in both concept and construction, RMs have earned a reputation over 35 years for being practical and durable, seaworthy and fast.

Most of today's cruising boats have hull features loosely derived from ocean racing. It's now the norm to have broad aft quarters with hard chines for extra form stability, twin rudders, a shallow bilge and a high-volume bow. Mast steps are moving aft in the hull. What sets RM apart from most other builders, as the shipyard's commercial director César Dohy explains, is a very strong emphasis on ensuring their boats' displacement remains light enough to take advantage of these design features. Despite being a blue water cruiser the RM 1070 for example has the same displacement, ballast ratio and sail area : displacement ratio as a typical offshore racer-cruiser of the same length.

Emirates Team New Zealand Name Powerful Additions to AC37 Sailing Team
Emirates Team New Zealand have secured a substantial injection of power to their sailing team line up for their Defence of the 37th America's Cup in Barcelona in 2024, with four new names from varied backgrounds of elite New Zealand sports.

Dougal Allan (Multi-sport)
Hamish Bond (rowing / cycling)
Louis Crosby (cycling)
Cameron Webster (rowing)

Each of the new sailing team recruits progressed through a brutal selection process overseen by Emirates Team New Zealand Trainer Kim Simperingham late in 2022. Kim's job is to find and physically train the elite athletes capable of outputting the immense power required to drive the systems onboard the AC75.

The two main physical qualities we were looking for are athletes that can sustain a really high power output for the length of a race, up to about half an hour, and athletes that can also achieve really high peaks in power, that will be used for the manoeuvres during races."

The tests were a combination of short maximum power output tests as well as longer endurance tests.

Seahorse Sailor Of The Month
This month's nominees:

The Pier View Cowes wins Best Sailors Bar John Bertrand (AUS)
Almost exactly 40 years too late, but our prizes are much better these days. The man whose third America's Cup campaign with Alan Bond in 1983 would change the America's Cup - and in turn sailing - for ever more recently won another Australian Etchells national title, this time with a race to spare. Racing with George Richardson and Lewis Brake, the trio sewed it up during the first race on the final day, did the maths and decided as it was Day 6 the old boy had done enough

The Pier View Cowes wins Best Sailors Bar John Winning (AUS)
We could be accused of catching up this month. John Winning has racked up every title there is to win in the 18-foot skiffs since 1975 and his first campaign with Travelodge. As well as being continuously busy on the water - bar a couple of seasons away to develop a 'pretty successful' family business - 'Woody' has held numerous roles in the class and is today - again - President of the 18-Footers League. Oh yes, Winning also co-founded today's captivating Historical 18s series…

The Pier View Cowes wins Best Sailors Bar February's winner:
Sarah Lee (AUS)
'Sarah is a fantastic skipper who rocks up and flogs us on a weekly basis!!' - Josh Ponton; 'The best 16-foot skipper I've ever sailed with' - Cameron McDonald; 'Sarah is inspiring the next generation of young female sailors that they can go out there and beat the boys … even if they're pint size!' - Nadene Dorling; 'One of our many great female sailors at Manly Skiff Club!' - Michael Chittenden; 'And the youngest State 16-footer champ ever' - Orlando Sadlik.

Emirates Team New Zealand - AC40-2 - Auckland - Day 3
The Kiwis switched boats for today's session sailing their second AC40 in the AC40-One Design configuration, instead of their first AC40, which is a test boat or LEQ12 running test components for the team's designers.

Auckland is in a period of onshore winds. Given the question marks over the foiling and sailability of the AC40 in rough water, it was a little surprising to see ETNZ opt to bypass the rough water and swell in the outer Rangitoto Channel (Course A and B from the 2021 Cup), and train instead in the calmer waters (no swell, just wind-chop of the landlocked Course E).

New Zealand's Lightning-Struck F50 Deemed Unable To Compete In Sydney
SailGP's 10-strong fleet of one-design F50s is set to reshuffle ahead of racing in Sydney after New Zealand's lightning-struck F50 known as Amokura was deemed unable to compete.

The Kiwis' boat was being towed back to the Tech Site shortly after racing in Singapore when lightning struck the top of the 29m wing, causing significant damage.

Initial investigation found the lightning had 'exploded all of the electronics on the boat,' according to Tech Team Manager Brad Marsh, while the extent of the damage to the carbon fiber platform remains unknown.

As a result, the Kiwis' F50 will be shipped back home to the SailGP Technologies facility in Warkworth, New Zealand to undergo further testing and repairs. This rules out the possibility of the boat being repaired in time to compete in Sydney next month.

In Sydney, the New Zealand team will instead compete in Boat 6 - the F50 previously used by the Japan team and currently in use by Canada. Canada meanwhile will take delivery of Boat 10, which recently completed construction in New Zealand and will be the team's permanent boat going forward.

Sailing World on Water
Highlights of what happened globally in the sport of sailing in the last 7 days.

This is the Emirates Team New Zealand LEQ 12, AC 40 which had the catastrophic bough crumple in a Nose Dive just before Christmas.

They have had a "full" day testing it on the Gulf and they are returning back to base. Naturally it's a relaxing time, and as they approach the area near the Royal Akarana Yacht Club and they are about to pass between a marker boy, and the distance poles.

It seems like they see it at the last moment, and so as not to have contact with either, they turn quickly to starboard and the rudder lifts out of the water, and, hit by a gust, the boat does another nose-dive down the mine. It then gently rolls in, and Blake and the boys, swim in their pod.

Crew all OK, boat the same, the chase boat crew are not impressed.

This is your weekly Sailing Highlights show, the World on Water, January 27, 2023.

Raceboats Only Gunboat 72V - NEW BOAT. POA EUR.

Introducing the Gunboat 72V, a new catamaran concept to complement the existing heritage series' currently in production (the Gunboat 68 and Gunboat 80) - the first catamaran with Gunboat performance and a flybridge. Design and engineering is the collaboration of Gunboat, VPLP, Christophe Chedal Anglay, and Patrick le Quément (the same team for the Gunboat 68) with a bespoke interior by Isabelle Racoupeau.

- Designed with the enjoyment and pleasure of cruising in mind, with the knowledge that even the most turbo Gunboats may spend >90% of their time in cruise mode. This new range invites clients whose cruising plans were just out of reach of full high-octane Gunboat capabilities at the performance end of the spectrum, with priorities for family and coastal cruising.
