Ocean Race Leg Two starts with difficult choices ahead
After being buffeted by strong trade winds for the duration of the short stopover, the waters off Mindelo, Cabo Verde were relatively calm on Wednesday for the start of Leg 2 of The Ocean Race.

The short stopover marked the first time The Ocean Race has visited west Africa and this island chain despite it featuring in the race course for all 14 editions as a tactical consideration on the leg from Europe down to the south Atlantic Ocean.

Out on the race course on Wednesday, teams had a short lap of a reaching course to navigate before heading out to sea, destined for Cape Town, some 4000 nautical miles -and two weeks - of racing away.

It was Robert Stank's GUYOT environnement - Team Europe and Charlie Enright's 11th Hour Racing Team who burst off the line with speed, just ahead of Biotherm and Holcim-PRB, with Team Malizia last across the line.

The wind was in the 7-10 knot range from the northeast throughout the start period, but is forecast to ease overnight, a far cry from the 25 knot trades that have been a feature since arrival.

The light winds mean it will be tactically difficult race over the first days, something already playing out with teams deciding how far south to position themselves compared to making miles to the west.

Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup
The seventh edition of the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, held in September 2021, had nearly everything a great one-design regatta should have: tremendous competitors, great social events, a polished race committee, fabulous sailing conditions and evenly matched boats. But it was missing one thing, a defending champion.

"We were very disappointed that we couldn't defend our 2019 win as we were not allowed to leave Australia during the Covid lockdowns," says Guido Belgiorno-Nettis of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. "Of course, we watched the 2021 Invitational Cup with fascination, jealousy and frustration. Sitting on the couch, my team were sure we could have given the 2021 competing teams a good run for their money. But I know that reality will set the record straight when we turn up at the start line in 2023. Then the talk stops and the action will begin."

So the 2021 event's loss will be a gain for the eighth edition, scheduled for September 9 to 16. Among the 20 prestigious yacht clubs that will toe the line for Corinthian sailing's premiere event will now be two teams hoping to carry forward the momentum from the last time they competed in this event: Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron and Southern Yacht Club from New Orleans, which claimed the title in 2021.

While Southern and Royal Sydney may have the pedigree of being the only two clubs to win an Invitational Cup sailed in the IC37s, they are far from the only clubs with a strong chance of winning the trophy. Of the 20 clubs, 19 have previously competed in the regatta and many will be sailing in IC37 events this coming summer to prepare. There's every reason to believe that the eighth edition of the regatta will be the most competitive yet.

The following yacht clubs will compete for the 2023 Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup:
The Corinthian Yacht Club (Marblehead, Mass.)
Howth Yacht Club (IRL)
Itchenor Sailing Club (GBR)
Japan Sailing Federation
New York Yacht Club
Norddeutscher Regatta Verein (GER)
Nyländska Jaktklubben (FIN)
Real Club Nautico de Barcelona (ESP)
Royal Canadian Yacht Club
Royal Cork Yacht Club (IRL)
Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (CHN)
Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron
Royal Swedish Yacht Club
Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron (AUS)
Royal Vancouver Yacht Club (CAN)
Royal Yacht Squadron (GBR)
Southern Yacht Club (New Orleans)
Yacht Club Argentino
Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (ITA)
Yacht Club Punte del Este (URY)

Coming through - Genoa Boat Show
Genoa Boat Show In 2020 a group of brave organisers were determined that it would be business as usual in one of the industry's most difficult years to date. Today, the Genoa International Boat Show is reaping the rewards

In the top tier of international boat shows, one show in particular is thriving and growing steadily in terms of its reach, scope and influence. The Genoa International Boat Show, staged every September right in the heart of the ancient maritime city, is effectively five different shows in one, it boasts more than 200,000 square metres of exhibition space in total and showcases about a thousand different brands, with large separate areas devoted specifically to sailing boats, superyachts, motorboats, next-generation marine technology and nautical tourism (which includes sailing schools, clubs and class associations). There's plenty of interest on offer for any sort of boating enthusiast, with a grand total of a thousand boats on display in 2022, a number that will increase next year thanks to the creation of 200 new berths to satisfy a growing demand that saw exhibitor spaces sold out for the 2022 edition as early as June.

Kevin Burnham Memorial Grant Recipients
The US Sailing Foundation awarded the inaugural Kevin Burnham Memorial Grants to three promising young sailors in December.

Created in honor of Athens 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Kevin Burnham, the grants assist young sailors not yet on the US Sailing Team as they begin their quest to the Olympic Games. The grants are awarded to sailors aged 31 and under who demonstrate outstanding competitive sailing potential, display an infectious enthusiasm, and compete in two-person Olympic class or Olympic Development class trapeze boats.

The 2022 grantees are: Charles Hibben of Barnstable, MA; Ian Nyenhuis of San Diego, CA; and Thomas Sitzmann of Severna Park, MD.

Both Sitzmann and Nyenhuis raced in the 49er FX regatta in Miami, having transitioned from the I-420 and 29er. They both represented the US at the Youth Worlds in Oman in 2020 while Nyenhuis also represented the US in the Youth Worlds in 2021 Holland. Hibben had a successful youth career, winning C420 New Englands, U18 Team Race Worlds, and qualified for 2018 Youth Worlds. After youth sailing, Charlie has raced on world championship keelboat teams, as well as winning a 49erFX North American Championship.

The Kevin Burnham Memorial Fund was established in 2022 under the umbrella of the US Sailing Foundation by Kevin's wife, Elizabeth Kratzig, his children Edward and Kyla Burnham, and his lifelong friend Steve Benjamin to carry on Kevin's memory and mission. The family hopes that the Fund will grow large enough to endow a US Sailing coaching position in Kevin's name.

Cape to St Helena Yacht Race
St Helena Island may be one of the most remote inhabited islands on the planet, but for the crews who have just tackled the 2022 Cape to St Helena yacht race, it's been a thrilling trip of a lifetime.

Situated in the South Atlantic, north west of South Africa, it's taken just over two weeks for some of the crew to sail the 1,700 nautical miles (1,950 km) from Cape Town to St Helena.

Previously called the Governor's Cup, the biennial Cape to St Helena yacht race was first conceived by Captain David Roberts, former Captain of the RMS St Helena, after watching the Cape to Rio fleet sail through Duncan Dock to Table Bay from the Royal Cape Yacht Club in 1996.

The first Cape to St Helena race in 1996 attracted 13 entries, with the second edition in 1998 securing a record 22 entries. For the 2022 race, the first since the Covid pandemic, 12 competitors took up the challenge to race their yachts across the South Atlantic to St Helena.

It was Commodore Neil Gregory who fired the cannon at 2pm on 29 December to signal the start of the Cape to St Helena 2022 race. Heading into steady 25 knot winds and some lumpy swells at first, the crews endured extreme weather patterns, strong winds, rain squalls and heavy seas over the ensuing days on the ocean.

The leading three yachts were followed by Rocket and Compromise, who finished with just five minutes between them, proving the race is never over until you cross the finish line.
