Shifting gears: Leg 2 presents challenges to IMOCA sailors
After a week of solid trade wind action in Cabo Verde, the forecast for the start of Leg 2 is much more benign - light NE winds of 5 to 8 knots.

In fact, the weakening trade winds are likely to impact the fleet all the way down to the doldrums - the area of notorious light winds and thunder cells around the equator - making for a fascinating, if slow, start to the leg.

Start time for Leg 2 is 1710 local time (1810 UTC) which is about 90-minutes before sunset, so the crews will be into that first night watch nearly immediately.

But with all of the transitions involved over the first days, there are likely to be many manoeuvres and rest will be hard to find.

"The first part of the race is going to be super tactical and there will be a lot of opportunities so we'll all need to be very switched on right from the word go," said Will Harris, who will be skipper on Team Malizai for leg two.

Four of the five teams have made crew substitutions, with Paul Meilhat's Biotherm the only team planning to start with the same lineup.

Leg 2 of The Ocean Race is scheduled to start at 1810 UTC (1710 local time in Cabo Verde) on Wednesday afternoon and live coverage in many territories shifts to Eurosport and Discovery+.

In most of Europe and many parts of Asia, you can watch the start live on Eurosport or Eurosport 1 beginning at 1730 UTC, and live or on demand on the Eurosport Player or Discovery+.

In Germany, fans of Boris Herrmann's Team Malizia can also watch delayed coverage on ZDF (please check local listings).

In other territories the live start will be available on The Ocean Race YouTube channel. (But please note that due to coverage on Eurosport platforms, this YouTube stream will be geoblocked in Europe and Asian territories with Eurosport coverage).

In Cabo Verde and Portugal, the live start will also be available live on RTP Africa.

* Boris Herrmann stepping off following injury

Boris Herrmann (Team Malizia) and Benjamin Dutreux (GUYOT environnement - Team Europe) will both hand over their skipper roles for Leg 2 of The Ocean Race.

Boris was injured when he burned his foot with boiling water during a mishap on Leg 1.

"The pot fell over and splashed boiling water on my foot. I wiped it off quickly but once we got here and went to the hospital we realised this is a severe burn we need to care of so therefore I can't do (Leg 2)," he said. "But I will be in good shape for Leg 3."

Will Harris will step up to the role of skipper for Leg 2, while Yann Elies will join the team as a substitute sailor. A three time winner of the Solitaire du Figaro and a fifth place finisher in the Vendee Globe, Elies is an accomplised addition to the team.

Also stepping away for Leg 2 is Benjamin Dutreux from GUYOT environnement - Team Europe. He will be replaced by Sebastien Simon in a scheduled rotation. Robert Stanjek will take over as skipper on the leg.

Cup Spy : Mixed day for the Brits, Swiss, USA and Kiwis
What happened in the Cup - January 23, 2023:

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing sailed today.

- INEOS Britannia sailed today.

- American Magic sailed today.

- Emirates Team New Zealand sailed today and nosedived towards the end of the session.

- Luna Rossa sailed out of Cagliari yesterday, January 22, 2023.

- No further developments from the late entry French K-Challenge. An announcement was expected in mid-late January according to an earlier announcement by the Late Entry team.

INEOS Britannia - LEQ12 - Mallorca - January 23, 2022 - Day 15
Top sailing journalist, Justin Chisholm was on the water and made various observations:

The British team's 15th day on the water in Palma Bay was a fast and furious affair with several high speed laps of the bay conducted in a three and a half hour window. Gusty winds made keeping the silver LEQ12 stable on a side tow while hoisting the main this morning costing time as the boat was towed to steadier conditions closer to shore.

Later in the day a black and ominous looking rain squall prompted an early end to sailing at around 1530. The team started the session with two long towing runs without sails that were later explained as necessary for data validation reasons.

Once sails were up the crew wasted no time in sending the boat at high speed on a series of extended foiling laps of the bay. Multiple foiling tacks and gybes were witnessed without any momentus splash downs.

Estimated top speed for the day was within a hairsbreadth of 40 knots on a flat water downwind run close to Campastilla. Contrastingly, the final run of the day took the boat eight nautical miles offshore - almost out of Palma Bay.

King George Gallop
Former PRO of the King George Gallop, Vince Horey, decided to dust down his Enterprise and take it for a spin in the handicap competition last weekend on light and sunny day on King George Reservoir in North London.

With Richard Abendstern crouching in the front, Vince roll-tacked the Enterprise to victory. Meanwhile, a previous winner of the Gallop, Tony Cooper, was this year's PRO. It follows on from another Twilight Zone coincidence at the start of the winter series when Richard Pye won the Fernhurst Books Draycote Dash aboard his RS Aero 7, having been PRO the year before.

Despite the poor forecast the day itself turned out really nicely. The Gallop had been another well-run event by the North London club, KGSC, which has been nominated as an RYA Club of the Year 2023 Finallist.

Results from the King George Gallop

Top Fastest as recorded by the SailRacer GPS trackers was:
Jonathan Carter - Vortex - 5.33 kts

Fastest speed adjusted to handicap was:
Ann Jackson/ Nick Scutt - Enterprise - 4.52 kts

1st Youth Finlay Cochrane - Laser 4.7 (ILCA 4) - Yorkshire Dales SC

Overall after 7 Events in the Selden SailJuice Winter Series

John Merricks Tiger Trophy
Taking place on 4 & 5 February, principal race officer David Wilkins has a great reputation for running exciting and fair racing on England's largest reservoir.

Up to four club-based RS21 keelboats are expected to take part in the competition, which also coincides with the first weekend of Six Nations rugby fixtures.

Wight Vodka Best Sailors Bar - Last day of voting
Wight Vodka Best Sailors Bar Voting for the top bar this year will end at midnight UTC Wednesday night. We'll announce the winner in our Friday issue this week.

A word on our sponsors.... 50 Degrees North, the parent company of Wight Vodka has sponsored this contest since 2006, with tens of thousands of votes and hundreds of nominated bars.

Wight Vodka has been developed with the understanding and appreciation of the centuries of seamanship born from the United Kingdom and reaching out into the world.

Wight Vodka is a specialty boutique vodka with limited production. It is created, blended and bottled in Clapham, at one of the smallest distilleries in London. The distillery is run by the seventh generation in a family lineage of distillers dating back to the 1700s. The foundation of Wight Vodka is created using superior quality potato spirit carefully sourced from award-winning local potatoes. Potato spirit creates full-bodied, ultra smooth vodka which Europeans have enjoyed for hundreds of years. Our spirit is therefore gluten free.

The team at 50 Degrees North recognises that potato spirit must form the foundation of Wight Vodka. Over the years, the time invested in formula testing, distillations and tasting sessions, has resulted in a vodka that is completely unique than that which has ever been created before.

If it's good enough for the Cup - Offshore Spars
Offshore Spars No different to the service they offer their most demanding grand prix clients, Offshore Spars now offers all racing customers the opportunity to precisely match mast bend characteristics to sail design... as standard

After almost 50 years building masts for everything from cruisers to America's Cup winners, Offshore Spars and its new owners are combining decades of experience with the latest innovations from the aerospace and automotive industries. The result is "bespoke" rigs, masts that perfectly match each boat's righting moment and sails.

'Back in the early days with aluminium, you'd just pick a mast section that matched your specs,' chief technology officer (CTO) Trent Justice explains. 'Now we're customising the entire carbon laminate so that at a particular wind load, the bend matches the mainsail's luff curve.'

Australian WASZP Nationals
Click on image for photo gallery.

WASZP We welcomed back the Fremantle Doctor after a few days of annual leave. A gorgeous 15knot sea-breeze greeted the 40 sailors at the Australian WASZP Championships. Host club Perth Dinghy Sailing Club has put on some fantastic hospitality for the sailors in the lead up to the series culminating in a great welcome night after the Slalom Championship unfortunately was abandoned due to no wind.

It has been fantastic for the sailors to get together for the first time collectively since covid and a strong fleet of 24 West Australian WASZPs have welcomed boats from all states and territories except SA and the NT.

The WASZP class is a diverse melting pot demographics, with sailors ranging from 15 to 65 and everything in between. There is something for everyone at this nationals with a strong masters contingent racing for the open championships but also enjoying personal battles within the fleet. There is a strong group of 16-23 year olds who have put in a lot of time in the WASZP coming out of 420s, 29ers and Lasers, looking to continue their sailing beyond the youth classes. There are many father, son combinations in the fleet giving a real family element to the class. The best part is, everyone comes together no matter what age or background and are competing on a level playing field in the WASZP.

Tomorrow and the next day look like the Fremantle Doctor will come hard, sailors will be fishing for the layday on the 26th of January.

Superyacht Palma
Entries have opened for Superyacht Cup Palma, the highlight of the Mediterranean superyacht calendar, with the Notice of Race now available for the 21-24 June celebration of sail.

Over a dozen prospective entries have declared an interest in joining the superyacht festival with racing on the Bay of Palma, including a trio of the awe-inspiring J Class yachts.

Alongside likely 2023 returnees Velsheda and Svea is Lionheart, last seen at SYC in 2014 when she took three race wins - including a dead heat finish - on the way to the top of a five-strong J Class fleet.

Lionheart's unusual history started in the 1930s originally as a Burgess and Stephens design which was not proceeded with, before finally seeing the light of day after being revisited by Hoek Design and launched in 2010. Along with Svea, Lionheart is a shining example of Hoek Design, a Friend of the Superyacht Cup.

Other superyachts potentially returning - several for a second successive year - include Archelon, Pattoo and Kiboko 3, the latter pair only separated on countback at the top of a hard-fought Class A in 2022, with the 33m Pattoo edging the win.

My Life in a Blue Suit by Jim Saltonstall MBE
Fernhurst Published by Fernhurst Books; 3rd March 2023

On Monday 28th November at the prestigious British Yachting Awards, organised by Sailing Today with Yachts & Yachting Magazine, the great and good of the sailing community gathered to award trophies to the best yachts, performers and kit of the year. But pride of place was reserved, at the end, for a Lifetime Achievement Award. This went, after a lengthy standing ovation, to the legendary Jim Saltonstall.

At five out of the last six Olympic Games Team GBR has been the top nation in sailing, a result of strong leadership from the Royal Yachting Association and very talented sailors and coaches. But Barry Pickthall, former Yachting Correspondent of The Times observed: "If one man deserves recognition for Britain's remarkable success within the sailing Olympic arena, it is Jim Saltonstall – the coach who has cajoled, encouraged and inspired so many youngsters towards world stardom over the past 3 decades."

Jim has written a remarkable autobiography about his life which reveals the reason for British Sailing success. Like any notable achievement it is as a result of a lot of hard work, giving the sailors the skills that they needed, but also as a result of Jim's unbelievable powers of motivation. To compare him with Sir Alex Ferguson in this regard would not be misplaced.

Published by Fernhurst Books as a paperback and eBook and part of its Making Waves series, My Life in a Blue Suit will be available to buy from all good bookshops, websites and direct from fernhurstbooks.com.
