WindWhisper Racing Team win stage one of The Ocean Race VO65 Sprint
The Ocean Race veteran Pablo Arrarte has led his team to victory in the first stage of the inaugural The Ocean Race VO65 Sprint.

WindWhisper crossed the finishing line at 14:11:14 UTC with an elapsed time of 6d 01h 11min 14s.

Golden Globe attrition, frustration and barnacles
Simon Curwen untouchable for now bound for Cape Horn, as Kirsten Neuschäfer struggles to keep pace with Abhilash Tomy.

Jeremy Bagshaw's lost battle! Beaten by barnacles once again and in Chichester Class, no longer in the GGR rankings.

Ian Herbert-Jones 5th into Hobart playing the game of attrition, and will leave after Jeremy.

Elliott Smith makes landfall in Australia, ending his round the world dream. He will be missed, but what an adventure it's been!

With Elliott out of the race and Jeremy beaten by barnacles, there are now just five contenders left for the GGR trophy in Les Sables d'Olonne and two sailors in Chichester Class with Guy Waites about to be dropped. Global warming or new found resistance? The barnacles are back big time in the Southern Ocean forcing Jeremy to stop and colonising Nuri's hull! Could they also be the reason why Kirsten is slowing down?

Elliott Smith (USA) arrived to a warm Aussie welcome in the Fremantle Sailing Club marina after crossing Cape Leeuwin earlier this week. The 27 y/o American sailor has sailed 14.000 miles non-stop, solo, unassisted and crossed two of the great Capes out of three! His challenges have been more than most, sailing the last 5000 miles with significant damage to his bowsprit and the last few weeks with no forestay at all after repairs failed. He has shown true grit and determination with real seamanship and skill to make landfall. His tweets, and satellite call to GGR have kept followers engrossed in his voyage and mindset.

It's been quite an adventure and while he is disappointed at not tying the knot into to Les Sables d'Olonne, has no complaints as he shared in his latest tweet.: 24: #ElliottSmith (USA) – Gale Force 34 "Second Wind":thank you everyone.. I am grateful for everything and I have no complaints, whatsoever.

He plans to repair the "Second Wind", then offer her up for sale to another adventure. Bravo Elliott, what a ride it's been!

Clipper Race fleet moves to sustainable running rigging as it extends partnership with Marlow Ropes
Marlow Ropes Marlow Ropes will be supplying innovative, sustainably made and recyclable running rigging for the eleven-strong fleet in the upcoming Clipper 2023-24 Race. Made with 73% recycled or sustainably manufactured raw materials, this will be the first fleet and ocean race where this type of recycled and sustainable rigging is used – a big leap for both sustainable rope manufacturing and for the leisure marine industry.

The announcement marks over 20 years of partnership for the two organisations, spanning ten editions of the Clipper Race. Throughout this relationship, Marlow Ropes has continued to research, develop and refine its products in the ultimate R&D setting- a 40,000 mile circumnavigation where matched ocean-racing yachts face extreme conditions and intense racing.

If there is space please could we add this last bit in, otherwise happy for you to finish after 'intense racing'

Every rope will now be made using a Bio-Dyneema® core, a sustainably sourced synthetic fibre which has the lowest carbon footprint per unit strength compared to other synthetic fibres as its production relies less on fossil fuels. Whilst the majority of rope covers will be made from blended Blue Ocean rPET (recycled polyester) yarn made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. The durability of this yarn was successfully trialled in the 2019-20 edition, with each yacht using Blue Ocean mooring lines used whilst docking in ports around the world.

Wight Vodka Sloop Tavern, Ballard, USA -- this is the second year that the Sloop Tavern has made it into the top ten. This is the antithesis of the blue-blazer yacht club bar. Hence a perfect bar for rig rats, foredeck apes and the like. No frills, no BS.

" We are the original home of the super mug or as we like to call it the Slooper; 34oz of the coldest beer in town! Great bar food including our world famous hand breaded fish and chips."

The Sloop has 15 total taps including 1 cider tap and 5 rotating taps. The Sloopersize is 33.8oz of the coldest beer in town served in a chilled mug. Fun fact: the Sloop Tavern sells the most draft Rainier beer in the state of Washington. Melges 24 Class Celebrates 30 Years of Racing, 1993-2023
Melges 24 Introduced in 1993, built by Melges Performance Sailboats and designed by Reichel/Pugh, the Melges 24 experienced instant success. It was awarded Sailing World Magazine's prestigious Boat of the Year in 1994. And by 1998, the Melges 24 became massively popular in the U.S. and across Europe resulting in its first World Championship taking place in Torquay, UK.

In celebration of the Melges 24's 30th Anniversary, the U.S. Melges 24 Class developed a M24@30 logo to mark the milestone. It symbolizes a modern stance on sportboat racing, and represents this iconic boat and all the people, past and present, that have made it the ultimate 'it' boat. Celebrating 30 Years of Racing the Melges 24.

Throughout 2023, the USM24CA and IM24CA will be telling the story of the Melges 24 as we work our way up to the U.S. National Championship happening at its birthplace in Lake Geneva, WI on October 6-8. This is the exact place where its ultra coolness, innovation and cutting-edge sailing concepts met the surface of the water for the very first time.

The Class is also happy to share the M24@30 logo so you can add it to your team gear, websites and social media channels for the 2023 season. Join us in celebrating the Melges 24!

New Tall Ship Will Be Coming to Grand Traverse Bay to Sail the Great Lakes
There will be a new tall ship sailing the Great Lakes this year, and it will soon be heading to its new home in Northern Michigan.

The Inland Seas Education Association made the big announcement to its supporters, they've acquired a new vessel. The schooner "Alliance" will be joining the fleet on West Grand Traverse Bay. "It's a perfect fit for an addition to our fleet, and it's going to allow us to reach more people throughout the Great Lakes and offer our programs at different ports throughout the Great Lakes," says ISEA Associate Director Juliana Lisuk.

It's not a replacement, but an addition to the Schooner "Inland Seas" already in use. The three masts of the "Alliance" top out at 105-feet tall. The group says they'll be able to expand their educational offerings.

The Alliance will be moving from its current home in Virginia to northern Michigan this June.

"This spring, alliance will be making a grand journey home to her new home in the Great Lakes. And we'll be going through the whole St. Lawrence Seaway and through Lake Ontario and Lake Erie and Lake Huron. And coming back to Suttons Bay by the end of June," Lisuk says.

Inland Seas has already hired another captain for the vessel and plans to make additional hires for the summer season as they add programs and opportunities.

Alliance is a three-masted, gaff-rigged schooner, measuring 105' with a Coast Guard license to carry 54 passengers. Originally named Kathryn B., she sailed as a part of a windjammer fleet off the coast of Maine. Sold in 2005, she sailed to Yorktown, Virginia, and was rechristened Alliance in honor of the American-French partnership during the American War of Independence. The Alliance is the vessel built right after Inland Seas at the Treworgy Shipyard in Palm Coast, Florida. Inland Seas was launched in 1994 and Alliance was launched in 1995. While they were designed by different architects, the vessels have many similarities including having the same John Deere engine.

Alliance will spend the winter in her current home waters of Yorktown, VA. We anticipate we will begin the trip from Virginia to Michigan at the beginning of May.
