Teasing Machine IRC Overall Winner 2023 RORC Transatlantic Race
RORC Vice Commodore Eric de Turckheim, racing his NMYD 54 Teasing Machine (FRA) is the overall winner under IRC for the 2023 RORC Transatlantic Race. While 10 boats are still racing, none of them can beat Teasing Machine's corrected time under IRC for overall victory. However, the battle is still on for those racing for class honours and special prizes.

Teasing Machine lifted the RORC Transatlantic Race Trophy at Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina becoming the first boat to win the trophy on two occasions; Teasing Machine also won overall in 2017. This year's triumph follows on from their overall win under IRC for the 2022 Rolex Middle Sea Race, so Teasing Machine will be going for a hattrick of victories in next month's RORC Caribbean 600.

Teasing Machine Crew: Eric de Turckheim, Laurent Pages, Quentin Bouchacourt, Bertrand Castelnerac, Aymeric Chappellier, Quentin le Nabour, Paco Lepoutre, Gabriele Olivo, Christian Ponthieu, Jerome Teillet.

The Highway South
Both fleets are charging towards the finish line in Cabo Verde

The leading IMOCAs are expected to arrive in Cabo Verde overnight Friday night and into Saturday morning as the fleet eats up the miles on 'the highway' south. Sailing fast, and pointing at the finish - it's a great feeling.

Both IMOCA and VO65 fleets have been winding their way past the Canary Islands. Now, it's just a matter of heading to the finish.

"We are going past the Canary Islands," said skipper Kevin Escoffier early on Thursday. "11th Hour Racing Team is the closest boat and they are following us so I think we are safe (in the lead).

Chasing the leading pair is Team Malizia.

In the VO65 fleet, the top three teams are within 40 miles, with WindWhisper leading Team JAJO and Mirpuri Foundation Racing Team.

The leading trio is due to arrive in Cabo Verde on Saturday, with Austrian Ocean Racing powered by Team Genova and Ambersail 2 several hours back. Viva Mexico is now in the Atlantic, but over 750 miles behind.

18 Footer Championship Season 'Hots Up'
Click on image for photo gallery.

18 Footer Although the Andoo team of John Winning Jr, Seve Jarvin and Sam Newton have already secured a victory in the 2022-23 NSW 18ft Skiff Championship, Sunday's final race of the championship still holds tremendous importance for all the leading teams as they prepare for the upcoming Australian and JJ Giltinan Championship on Sydney Harbour.

The Australian Championship will be sailed over three days (January 27, 28, 29) with a 'warm up' day, on January 26, being staged as part of the Australia Day Regatta.

The nine-race JJ Giltinan World Championship will be staged from March 4-12 and will include entries from Europe and New Zealand as well as more from possibly three or four Australian states.

Andoo is definitely the benchmark for the rest of the fleet with consistently impressive form over the season to date, but if last Sunday is any indication, things are beginning to 'hot up' amongst her most likely challengers, who are beginning to edge closer to the NSW champion.

Keagan York's brand new Van Munster-built Finport Finance hull was having its first race start and led the fleet easily over the first lap of the North East course before the team pulled off the course at the end of the first lap with "a couple of teething problems".

Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Jim Colley) and Balmain Slake (Henry Larkings) are two young teams with the potential to press their more experienced rivals, while another young team yet to show their best form is Rag & Famish Hotel, skippered by former world match racing champion Harry Price.

The Season Point Score is calculated on the performance of each team every week during the club's season, and is based on the relative handicap of each boat after each race.

Going into Sunday's race, The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines (Alex Marinelli) leads on 63 points, followed by Yandoo and Smeg equal on 64, Burrawang-Young Henrys (Simon Nearn) on 71, Birkenhead Point Marina (Kirk Mitchell) 73, Shaw and Partners Financial Services 75, Lazarus 78, Andoo 82 and Fisher & Paykel on 87. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Cup Spy : Goodison updates on Patriot .. Kiwis AC40 test options evolve
What happened in the Cup - January 18, 2023:

INEOS Britannia last sailed out of Mallorca on January 14, 2023.

American Magic sailed inshore again in Pensacola after deciding that the seaway was too extreme outside in the Gulf of Mexico. They sailed in light winds. Skipper Paul Goodison gave an excellent interview dockside after the training session, where he opened up the situation with the cyclists being off the boat, the differences between co-helm styles, tacking/gybing and getting the AC75 into the air.

Emirates Team New Zealand sailed their LEQ12 in light airs in Auckland, setting up eventually on the old Course E used for the 2021 America's Cup, and tested their race software. It is now becoming more clear as to their training strategy over the next few months, using two AC-40's - with options in one design and LEQ12 mode, and in two-boat training. See report below.

Luna Rossa last sailed out of Cagliari on January 16, 2023.

Alinghi Red Bull Racing last sailed out of Barcelona on January 13, 2023

No further developments from the late entry French K-Challenge. An announcement was expected in mid-late January according to an earlier announcement by the Late Entry team.

Shirley Robertson's Sailing Podcast
Shirley Robertson This month's edition of Shirley Robertson's Sailing Podcast comes from the Spanish port of Alicante, long time home to the Ocean Race, as the fourteenth edition of this famous round the world adventure gets underway with a dramatic new look.

On what is the fiftieth anniversary of what was originally called the Whitbread Round The World Race, then became famous as the Volvo Ocean Race and is now being sailed as simply The Ocean Race, Shirley Robertson presents her podcast from the start of the thirty two thousand nautical mile odyssey. In this edition she talks to skippers and crew members from each of the five foiling IMOCA entrants, and catches up with Ocean Race Co-President, Johan Salen, to talk thorough the class changes, and the future of the Race.

Now being sailed in the IMOCA class, the superfast foiling monohulls more familiar to Vendee Globe fans, much of the dockside chat was over sailing these solo-orientated speed machines with a crew, and how sailing from the almost fully covered cockpits was a huge departure for this race.

This edition of the podcast is in two parts and is available to listen to via the podcast page of Shirley's own website - shirleyrobertson.com/podcast or via most popular podcast outlets, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcast and aCast.

Sailing World on Water
Highlights of what happened globally in the sport of sailing in the last 7 days.

Last Sunday saw the start of the much awaited the ocean race in Alicante. The two fleets of crewed boats had a thundering exit from the Med on their way to the first stop in Cape Verde. This is the race report at the time of editing this show on January 18th.

This is your weekly sailing highlights Show, The World on Water, January 20th, 2023.

In this edition, we have the so called most competitive two forms of sailing in the world. The Larry Ellison funded Russell Coutts led SailGP in Singapore and the low level but highly competitive, locally sponsored, Sydney 18 footers. SailGP is a new phenomenon. Whilst the 18 footers pedigree goes back to the early 1900s. Here is last weekend Singapore race report and later in the show you will see the greatest eighteenths race on sparkling Sydney Harbour.

The RORC transatlantic race concluded with Giovanni Soldini leading the pack into the finish in Grenada in his Multi 70 Maserati. Despite major problems during the passage, he still came in first to take the title.

After picking up the silverware in Newport in 1983. Aussie John Bertrand has concentrated on the Etchells. Last week he won the Australian National Championships hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club in South Australia. -- Geoff Waller

Kinsale Sovereign's Cup to Host Top American Cookson 50
The latest entry to register for the Simply Blue Sovereign's Cup 2023 at Kinsale from 21st to 24th June is a prime example of one of the most enduringly-successful designs in modern offshore racing. In fact, the Cookson 50 dates back to the previous millennium, when innovative boat-builder Mick Cookson of New Zealand took what has proven to be a timelessly competitive Bruce Farr 50ft hull design in 1996, and fitted it with his own take on a canting keel to create a marque - the Cookson 50 - which has been winning offshore majors ever since.

Ireland got involved with the Cookson 50 early in the new century, when Ger O'Rourke of Limerick commissioned Chieftain from new, and won his class and placed fourth overall (despite it being big boat-favoured event) in the 2005 Sydney-Hobart Race. Then he won the 2007 Fastnet Race overall, the first Irish boat to do so since the Dubois 40 Admirals Cupper Irish Independent in 1987. And then, as Adrian Lee's Lee Overlay Partners (RStGYC), the former Chieftain won the inaugural RORC Caribbean 600 Race in 2009.

But by this time, other teams were notching Cookson 50 success, and since 2006 Ron O'Hanley of the New York YC has been one of the most consistent and enthusiastic with Privateer. Now, 17 years later, he's still with the same boat, but with a well-filled trophy cabinet which includes first in the 2013 Caribbean 600 and a very close second overall in the 2017 Fastnet, plus many others prizes, for if there's a big race on and Privateer is in the entry list, then we can be fairly sure she'll figure on the podium in some position - overall or by class - at the finish.

Thus the fact that Privateer has now stepped up to the plate for the Coastal Division in June's Simply Blue Sovereign's Cup 2023 is going to add greatly to the interest for this class, which in 2021 was won by Rebert Rendell's Grand Soleil 44 Samatom from Howth. Entries are coming in at a healthy rate for the 2023 Sovereigns, with the classes including the Europeans for the 1720s, which last year at Volvo Cork Week attracts a crack fleet of 42 boats, with the win going to the Crosshaven/Howth English/McDonald squad on Atara.
