Leg one of The Ocean Race
The first leg of The Ocean Race looked like it was going to be a tough one, viewed from the dockside in Alicante, and it has certainly delivered on that promise.

Just as forecast, the five crews pioneering the participation of the IMOCA Class in this race - regarded as the world championship of fully-crewed offshore sailing - have had their hands full.

After a spectacular start on Sunday, with the boats screaming off the line on flat water, they then had to deal with a prolonged and complex transitional zone before the baptism of fire - to windward - began in the approach to the Strait of Gibraltar.

In this phase, the westerly breeze was, if anything, stronger than forecast, with gusts of over 50 knots and a nasty sea state, making for a very uncomfortable ride. As Boris Herrmann, skipper of Team Malizia, remarked, it may well be that the teams have already seen the toughest conditions of the entire race.

All around the IMOCA world there will have been a sigh of relief that all five crews made it through the Strait without serious damage and no dismastings or anything that could threaten a team’s continued participation. Some broke sails - a hole in Holcim-PRB’s mainsail, and a torn J3 on 11th Hour Racing Team among them - but, as far as we know, nothing more serious.

The third monohull to cross the finish line was Swan 115 Jasi (SWE), skippered by Toby Clarke in an elapsed time of 9 days 14 hrs 43 mins 37 secs. The Botin 56 Black Pearl (GER), with Stefan Jentsch at the helm was next, finishing the RORC Transatlantic Race in an elapsed time of 9 days 15 hrs 42 mins and 16 secs. The latest team to finish the race was Eric de Turckheim’s NMYD 54 Teasing Machine (FRA) in an elapsed time of 9 days 20 hrs 21 mins and 36 secs. --Louay Habib/RORC

Celebrating a Half Century of the DN World Championship
DN World Championship Back in 1973, DN iceboat sailors from around the world gathered for the class’s first Gold Cup at Gull Lake, Michigan in the U.S.A. People who were there can’t believe it’s been that half a century. Perhaps time flies when you’re sheeted in and going that fast.

During the next two seasons, IDNIYRA organizations in North America and in Europe will honor 50 years of international competition. Beginning next week, DN North America kicks off the celebration by commemorating the 50th anniversary of the first world championship. DN Europe will continue the theme in 2024 when it hosts the actual 50th running of the event.

At Harken, ice sailing is deep in our DNA. We’re excited that this incredible event is scheduled to be just a few kilometers down the highway. A note to that storm gathering strength out to the West: turn left! We want the world’s best sailing in Wisconsin, not driving across the continent chasing clear ice.

We’re honored to serve as media sponsor of this storied Class’s most important event. Follow the racing at https://IDNIYRA.org and on Harken’s social media channels. Look for race recaps and new videos every day.

USS Yorktown Organizers of Charleston Race Week are excited to announce a new venue for the Regatta Village, coming up April 20-23, on the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, conveniently located just 52 yards from the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina. A mixture of history and modernity, The USS Yorktown is one of the most beautifully unique event venues in Charleston, offering unparalleled views of Charleston Harbor and the city skyline from the flight deck. On Saturday night, the popular PRO-AM will use the flight deck for viewing. What’s more, the hangar bays provide ample space for sponsor exhibits and special presentations.

Now in its 27th year, the event continues to evolve. Several new classes have been added including the Hobie 33s who are hosting their National Championship in conjunction with Race Week. If you are not able to bring your own boat, charter boats are available. The College of Charleston has J/22’s available and RS21’s are available through RS Sailing. If you’re interested in learning about foiling, the 69F’s will be back. Other boats are available for charter as well - just check the Yacht Scoring Event Page and charlestonraceweek.com for the latest information.

Competitors can register at charlestonraceweek.com or yachtscoring.com and there is a $100 discount if you register by Jan. 31st.

The Ocean Race E-Race - Beat the pros at their own game!
Annie Lush, crew member of Guyot Environnement - Team Europe, recently joked that she might not have to get out of her pyjamas for a week. Such is the dry, indoors environment of racing on board an IMOCA. The problem is, Annie and others might be suffering from sea sickness as the foiling 60-footer bounces off a wave at high speed.

Would you like to join Annie and others on their round-the-world adventure? Well you can, and you won’t have to get out of your pyjamas, and you won’t even be seasick.

In the time-honoured tradition of The Ocean Race, you can take part in an eSailing version of the contest, thanks to a partnership between the race and Virtual Regatta Games.

There are two versions of the race, offshore and inshore:

The Ocean E-Race: Virtual Regatta Offshore
- played in legs in parallel to the real race

Stopover E-Cup: Virtual Regatta Inshore
- played for four days during Stopovers
- name adapts to the stopover: After the successful Alicante E-Cup at the beginning of the week, next Cabo Verde E-Cup will be played.

For the first time ever the IMOCA race teams competing in The Ocean Race are also participating in the virtual competition. They have recruited their own E-Sport teams who will represent them in Virtual Regatta. So you can put your skills directly against the best offshore sailors in the (real) world. How will they fare on a virtual ocean? We’ll find out...

The Ocean Race E-Sport: E-Sport Crew of each team
- Up to 5 team members per team: 1 player for the E-Cup, 4 players for the E-Race
- They race against each other in an internal ranking, and are also shown in the general ranking

69F Starts 2023 From Miami
The Youth Foiling Gold Cup 2023 started today in Miami, Florida, with Act 1 of four. The Youth Foiling Gold Cup is the successful 69F circuit reserved for under 25 sailors. It is made of four events, two in Europe and two in the USA and it ends with a Grand Final in Barcelona in November, where the best two teams of each regatta are invited to have the possibility to become the year champion. Last November in Barcelona, Team Dutch Sail won the 2022 YFGC, after a tight battle with the French of Groupe Atlantic, and they won a 40,000 Euro voucher to be spent on this year’s circuit.

The first 2023 event, that began today and will end on Saturday, January 21st, has eight teams coming from six nations competing for the win. The Antigua Rum Runners, from Antigua and Barbuda with Rocco Falcone, Filippo Amonti and Teresa Romairone, Team Enzedder Racing, from New Zealand, with Sam Street, Andre Van Damm, Serena Woodwall and Alex Mitchel-Barker. One team from Switzerland, Alps Racing, with Lea Rabeder, Nick Zeltner and Jann Shuepbach, one team new in the circuit, coming from Argentina, Team Tres Estrellas, with Valentin and Agustin Frey, Beltran Ignacio Lepori and Lola Trueba.

Then there are two teams for both Canada and USA. The Canadians are Team Volaire, with Caspar Lenz Anderson, Federico Colaninno and Lilly Rainham, and Team We CAN Foil, with Jackson Macaulay, Rachel Betschart, Andreas Steintz and Andrew Chisholm. For the USA, two teams of NYYC and the America’s Cup team American Magic, one made of Kyle Navin, Sverin Gramm and Pearl Latanzi and the other made of Copper Delbridge, Cam Farraah and Kevin Rio.

After Act 1 in Miami, Act 2 will take place in France, in La Grande-Motte from May 8th to the 14th, for which more than 12 teams have already signed-up. In June the Youth Foiling Gold Cup will go back to the States, in Newport, to finish on Lake Garda, in Torbole, from August 21st to the 27th. Then the YFGC Grand Final in Barcelona, venue of the 2024 America’s Cup, at the beginning of November (2-5).
