I Love Poland take Monohull Line Honours - win the IMA Transatlantic Race Trophy
Tuesday 17 January, Grenada: The Polish National Foundation's Volvo 70 I Love Poland (POL), skippered by Grzegorz Baranowski crossed the finish line outside Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina, Grenada on Tuesday 17th January 2023 at 13:47:07UTC. I Love Poland have taken Monohull Line Honours and win the IMA Transatlantic Race Trophy.

I Love Poland Crew: Grzegorz Baranowski, Mateusz Byrski, Arkadiusz Fedusio, Adam Glogowski, Grzegorz Gozdzik, Robert Hajduk, Dominik Janowczyk, Pacyfik Koseski, Konrad Lipski, Borys Michniewicz, Bartosz Nowicki, Filip Pietrzak, Patryk Richter, Jakub Surowiec.

Nine of the I Love Poland crew are under 35 years of age and skipper Grzegorz Baranowski is the leader and oldest member of the team. A highly accomplished match racer, Baranowski became involved in the Polish National Foundation programme in the early stages. I Love Poland is successfully producing top class Polish offshore sailors.

I Love Poland navigator is Konrad Lipski, who is just 27 years old but has the experience and maturity way beyond his years. Not many navigators of that age can have taken Monohull Line Honours in the Rolex Middle Sea Race, Roschier Baltic Sea Race, and now the RORC Transatlantic Race. -- Louay Habib/RORC

Duelling through the Straits
Day two of The Ocean Race had the fleet searching for calmer waters by heading towards the Spanish coastline to avoid the worst of the brutal offshore breeze and sea state before breaking through the Strait of Gibraltar and out into the Atlantic.

For the IMOCA fleet in particular, each tack along the shoreline brought the risk of damage, yet on the other hand, reducing the number of tacks and taking longer legs in between would take them further out into stronger winds and bigger waves. Striking the correct balance was hard. None more so than for 11th Hour Racing Team and their closest competitor, Holcim-PRB. As they headed west, the pair were locked in a tacking duel.

Leading the way, Charlie Enright's crew aboard Malama were under pressure to defend their position while at the same time working the best shifts along the shore. Tack for tack, throughout the night Kevin Escoffier's team were nibbling away at the 11th Hour Racing Team's lead, closing the distance hour by hour.

The crucial passing move would come in the early hours when Holcim-PRB decided to tack onto starboard first. Shortly after they tacked he wind shifted slightly towards the north, delivering a small but crucial advantage. By the time Enright's crew matched them they were trailing Escoffier.

Both could now head directly at the entrance to the Gibraltar Strait in a high speed, upwind drag race.

Entries open for Cowes Week 2023
Cowes Week Ltd is pleased to announce that entries for the world's longest running regatta are now open for 2023. At 197 years young, Cowes Week remains one of the pre-eminent regattas in the world, and this year the team expect to welcome more than 500 boats racing in 37 different classes.

The organisers are expecting over 30 of the Mark Mills designed Cape 31, a lightweight flyer with an enormous spinnaker, whilst the XOD class will compete for their Captain's Cup trophy (the most prestigious in their annual calendar), with 50 boats.

Regatta Director Laurence Mead said: "We are a little later opening entries this year than previous years, but we still have a Super Early Bird discount period as we seek to keep the regatta as affordable as possible. We have invested further over the winter on our course setting software and remain focused on delivering world-class regatta racing. Whichever class, our course setters work hard to deliver quality racing from club cruisers right up to IRC Class One."

The team at Cowes Week look forward to welcoming competitors and visitors to the Regatta and to the sunny Isle of Wight for race day one on Saturday July 29th. The event culminates with the overall prize giving on Friday August 4th.

Match Racing at Oakcliff
Oyster Bay, NY, USA: Match Racing has been the backbone of Oakcliff since we began, and yet we continue to evolve and innovate. This summer the Acorn World Match Race Tour Academy is back and is scheduled so a young team can race the Gov Cup, train here and then go straight to the WMRT Grand Slam Series: Chicago, Detroit, Oakcliff and Seawanhaka.

Oakcliff will host at least 12 graded match race Clinegattas this summer. Following the Mixed+ trend we have two designated as such. For the July Grade 5 and August Grade 4, each team must be 50% minimum female. That shouldn't be a problem as this is the case at most regattas here anyway!

We are also hosting an innovative all-in-one Umpire Seminar and Grade 5 Hybrid event April 15-16. For sailors there will be a clinic and some racing on Saturday and then more on Sunday. The Umpires will have some 'homework', a morning session on Saturday morning, real-time practice Saturday afternoon, a Sunday morning session and full-on practice and assessment, for those who are ready on Sunday afternoon. US Sailing's Calendar has zero umpire seminars on it so for now please email Patrice to express your interest. We'll work on getting the sign ups on our Oakcliff calendar ASAP so check back there often. -- Dawn Riley
