Speed dials rising in RORC Transatlantic Race
At 1000 UTC on the second day of the RORC Transatlantic Race, three 70ft trimarans are now powered up on a tight reach, blasting through the Atlantic Ocean. The monohull fleet, racing for the overall win under the IRC Rating Rule, have yet to leave the Canary Islands, with the bulk of the fleet positioned to the north of Tenerife. Boat speeds are ramping up right through the RORC fleet, with the IRC Classes set to join the multihulls in the Atlantic later today or tomorrow.

Multihull Class
Frank Slootman's MOD70 Snowflake (USA), skippered by Gavin Brady was leading as the multihulls approached Tenerife. MOD70 Zoulou (FRA), with Erik Maris at the helm was second and Giovanni Soldini's Maserati Multi70 (ITA) was in third.

IRC Super Zero
Volvo 70 I Love Poland (POL), skippered by Grzegorz Baranowski leads the class and Monohull Line Honours. Second is Swan 115 Jasi (SWE), skippered by Toby Clarke with the Two-Handed duo of Scott Shawyer & Alan Roberts in third racing IMOCA 60 Canada Ocean Racing (CAN).

IRC One
At 1000 UTC, Laurent Courbin's First 53 Yagiza (FRA), skippered by Philippe Falle leads on the water and after IRC time correction. Andrew & Sam Hall's Lombard 46 Pata Negra (GBR) is about three miles astern, with both teams heading for the westerly tip of Tenerife. Lionel Regnier's Briand 58 L'Esprit D'Equipe (FRA) is in third place.

IRC Two-Handed
Kate Cope & Claire Dresser, racing Sun Fast 3200 Purple Mist (GBR) and Peter & Duncan Bacon on their Sun Fast 3300 Sea Bear (GBR) are making excellent progress. Their average speed has increased this morning, with Sea Bear just four miles ahead, but the two teams are virtually level after IRC time correction. -- Louay Habib/RORC

Cup Spy : Luna Rossa catch a big breeze, while American Magic have a day on the Bay
INEOS Britannia did not sail having had a session the previous day.

American Magic sailed inshore on Pensacola Bay in light winds, rather than take their chances on a long tow to the Gulf, and just get light/no wind.

Emirates Team New Zealand are not expected to sail until January 16

Luna Rossa sailed from Cagliari in a 12-18kt breeze after towing on another Mediterranean breeze hunt. Alinghi Red Bull Racing remained in the shed

No further developments from the late entry French K-Challenge

Better and better
With new formats and fresh features added for 2023, the next Tre Golfi Sailing Week promises to be a vintage edition of this classic regatta

With its mix of competitive offshore and inshore racing held in a gorgeous springtime Mediterranean setting, coupled with a deep heritage in event management excellence now in its 68th year, Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia’s Tre Golfi Sailing Week sponsored by Rolex is one of the best events in the race week genre.

A broader view
More speed but also more space, more payload and better handling… as the booming multihull market continues to evolve, Outremer keeps on refining its winning formula

Ask the movers and shakers in the design world what defines performance and many will say that it is not always about straight-line speed. Instead, handling frequently comes top of the list. Multihull builder Outremer would be among the first to agree.

The changing face of offshore racing
Sunday saw the opening battles of The Ocean Race, with both the IMOCA and VO65 fleets taking part in the Alicante In-Port Race.

Losing title sponsor Volvo was a huge blow for the event, but the organisers have soldiered on with a much-reduced budget, and of course the delay due to Covid-19, just like nearly all events scheduled during the pandemic, both big and small. In many ways it's remarkable that they've got to this point.

It's 50 years since the Whitbread Round the World Race first set sail. The 1973-74 edition attracted 17 entries, with a peak of 29 for the 1981-82 edition. Arguably the peak for this event in terms of global recognition, and coverage in non-sailing media, was in the 1989-90 edition, with the two New Zealand ketches - Steinlager 2 skippered by Peter Blake and Fisher & Paykel skippered by Grant Dalton - battling it out around the world.

why has The Whitbread Round the World Race / Volvo Ocean Race / The Ocean Race been on a downward trajectory for 20 years when the Vendee Globe has been on the rise in terms of competitors, finishers, and coverage? Offshore racing itself is more popular than ever, with events like the RORC Transatlantic Race attracting bumper entries, and the biennial Rolex Fastnet Race filling its entry quota in minutes, so surely the interest is there?

29er Teenagers win the Bloody Mary
Two 17-year-olds have won the GJW Direct Bloody Mary pursuit race, the sixth leg of the Selden SailJuice Winter Series.

James Crossley and Noah Fitzgerald (Hayling Island SC), crossed the line in their 29er skiff after 1 hour and 39 minutes of high speed racing around Queen Mary reservoir in south-west London.

The young team came out on top of a high-quality fleet of 146 boats, representing 43 boat classes from 68 sailing clubs. Among the fleet were Olympic medallists and world champions across a range of dinghy classes.

With the breeze frequently blowing over 20 knots, at one point gusting to 32, this was always likely to be a good race for the faster trapeze boats. However, some of the better sailed hiking boats were also able to fight their way into contention for a top-10 finish.

While the top six places went to different trapeze boats, the next four places all went to different hiking boats. The only class to score twice in the top 10 was the 420 in 5th and 6th overall.

Top 3 overall
1st - James Crossley & Noah Fitzgerald, 29er, Hayling Island Sailing Club
2nd - Sam Pascoe, Musto Skiff, Castle Cove Sailing Club
3rd - DJ Edwards & Vyv Townend, Fireball, Bough Beech Sailing Club

First Lady Helm: Amelie Hiscocks, 29er, Weymouth and Portland Sailing Club
First Queen Mary Helm: Chris Eames, RS400, Queen Mary Sailing Club
Grand Master: Steve Cockerill, Europe, Stokes Bay Sailing Club
First Junior Helm: James Crossley, 29er, Hayling Island Sailing Club

Class prizes were also awarded to:
ILCA 6 - Samantha Edwards, Queen Mary Sailing Club
Musto Skiff - Sam Pascoe, Castle Cove Sailing Club
RS200 - Ian Whaley & Lorna Glen, Parkstone YC
RS800 - Ben Palmer & Dicken MacLean, Hayling Island Sailing Club
RS400 - Ollie Groves & Martin Penty, Beaver Sailing Club

2-Week Countdown to the 35th Pineapple Cup
Gearing up for the start are a mixture of teams, headlined by the modified Volvo 70 Pyewacket. Roy Disney and his team on Pyewacket will be gunning for the monohull course record set in 2005 by Titan 12 at 2 days, 10 hours, 24 minutes and 42 seconds.

In addition to Pyewacket, the race features Bruce Chafee's team Rikki who are a young, amateur team of nine from New England looking forward with excitement to a competitive race and thrilling adventure.

Another strong contender for the silver perpetual trophy will be the Pac52 Callisto. Jim and Kate Murray have been sailing on Lake Michigan for years, but recently they've 'graduated' from smaller boats to the larger Pac52 to take on many of the great offshore races. Their team, a pro-am mix will be competing in the Pineapple Cup for the first time.

A central pillar to the show will be the Blue Innovation Dock (BID) in hall 10, where a different key theme will be covered each day of the show. boot Director Petros Michelidakis: "This makes the bid a must-attend event for all trade visitors to boot Düsseldorf. The content partner is European Boating Industry - EBI.
