Poole and Borch Fastrack to Quarter-Finals
Sydney, Australia: USA's Chris Poole/ Riptide Racing and Denmark's Jeppe Borch / Borch Racing excelled in perfect conditions again on Sydney Harbour today, finishing at the top of the first qualifying stage, advancing both teams directly to the Quarter-final stage.

The remaining eight teams now sail a repechage with the top six teams joining the quarter-finals.

Sydney Harbour delivered its second day of spectacular conditions as Principal Race Officer Denis Thompson led the fleet to Double Bay at the eastern end of the harbour to shelter from a building southerly breeze which saw gusts over 30 knots.

Local Sydney team, DownUnder Racing with skipper Harry Price, went undefeated for the day finishing third after the qualifying stage, and then winning the first two of their seven repechage races which continues tomorrow.

The forecast for the next few days sees the southerly settle into Sydney, with predictions of 20 - 30 knots on the cards for Friday and 20 knots over the weekend making for some exciting racing.

Antigua Sailing Week
ASW kicks off with the stand-alone 52-mile Peters & May Round Antigua Race on Saturday 29th April. ASW racing starts the next day with the English Harbour Rum Race Day. Daily racing continues until 5th May, not forgetting Wednesday's Lay Day, a legendary highlight of the packed onshore agenda known for its unforgettable beach entertainment. CSA racing, CSA double-handed, CSA multihull, classic, sportsboat and cruising classes are all invited and for the first time the event will coincide with the three-day Antigua Wingfoil Championships.

Antigua Sailing Week's Official bareboat sponsor Dream Yacht Charter is offering charter packages on a range of yachts, all race-prepared for the event's bareboat classes. A range of other race boats are also listed on the event website, many courtesy of LV Yachting, for charter with a boat captain in the CSA classes, from a Volvo 65/70 right through to a J122. Individual crew options are available on Salona 45 Panacea. Charter entries are already confirmed from First 53 Yagiza and Swan 68 Defiance.

The multihulls are also gearing up for some hot competition. Entries received from Anthony McVeigh's home-based Dragonfly 28 Bobby Dazzler and, all the way from Australia, Guy Chester's Crowther Tri 46 Oceans Tribute, are paving the way for a good spectrum of boats and crews in this class.

The countdown for The Ocean Race is on and GUYOT environnement - Team Europe has started the final preparations. Five weeks before the start of the world race in Alicante (15th January, 2023) the yacht is back in Europe. With the signing of Támara Echegoyen Domínguez, the final building block to complete the sailing team has also been put in place. The 2012 Olympic champion and Volvo Ocean Race sailor (2017-18) fits perfectly into the structure of the European team with her experience in Olympic and offshore sailing.

The co-skippers of GUYOT environnement - Team Europe, Benjamin Dutreux (France) and Robert Stanjek (Germany), see the 38-year-old Spaniard as an ideal fit for the spot in the team that has yet to be filled.

The sailing team has a few days off until Christmas before meeting in Barcelona to take delivery of the yacht. After Benjamin Dutreux finished the Route du Rhum in Guadeloupe as a strong eight, Robert Stanjek, Annie Lush, Sébastien Simon and Phillip Kasüske, along with Onboard reporter Charles Drapeau, have taken over the boat and sailed back to Europe. A perfect opportunity to get to know the potential of the former "Hugo Boss 6" even better in the different conditions. On 10th December they arrived in Barcelona. Now the yacht is due for an overhaul before it is transferred to Alicante for the start of the race.

The start date for the 14th edition of this prestigious race is January 15, 2023.

IMOCA announces a Green Sail Rule
A rule to accelerate impact reduction throughout our value chain

IMOCA concludes the first step in an evolutionary rule process. The Class and its sailmakers have defined the first elements of the IMOCA Green Sail Rule.

A rule that was voted on in 2021 and is based on the overall objective to reduce the impact that sail production has on the environment over the following years.

In a new IMOCA production, a set of sails contribute to 1,4% of the overall CO2e emissions (source 11th Hour Racing Design & Build Report 2021). An incremental contributor to these emissions is the waste from both primary (resin and fibers that make up the sail) & auxiliary (all the consumables: gloves, tape, paper etc.), to fabric 1 kg of sail requires 6 kg of material.

Michel Marie (Life Cycle Assessment Consultant) came onboard to assist IMOCA in developing the Green Sail Rule. "IMOCA decided to first assess the sails lifecycle to understand the hot spots within sail production," he states. "It was through the LCA process that IMOCA was able to prescribe the Green Sail Rule and start tackling the major impact areas linked to sail production today".

Sailing World on Water Dec 16.22
Emirates Team New Zealand and Land speed pilot Glenn Ashby have sailed 'Horonuku', their wind powered land speed world record craft, faster than any previous records.

Pilot Glenn Ashby was clearly happy with the run, but also tempered with the knowledge that Horonuku can go much faster.

Before the 222.4km/h speed is declared 'official' there is a stringent verification process that needs to be conducted in accordance with the international governing body, Federation Internationale de Sand et Land Yachting, for the new world record speed to become ratified.

There has been an independent Federation approved judge on the ground at Lake Gairdner to witness and verify the run, the GPS recording from Horonuku and all other mandatory requirements of a record attempt, and must submit all related data to the Federation within 48 hours

This is your weekly "World on Water" for December 16, 2022. Highlights of the best in Sailing and Land Yachting in the last seven days.

Launchings
YYachts YYachts delivered the first Y9.

With a length of 29.71 m, the Y9 presents – due to clever construction and transverse garage in the aft – the same volume of a 100ft yacht with a private owners' apartment to offer maximum privacy, comfortable guest cabins and a large and flexible crew area. The exterior design and naval architecture was drawn by Bill Tripp while the interior is the result of a styling by Norm Architects and the experience of Design Unlimited.

As all YYachts models, the Y9 is built completely from carbon fibre optimizing performance and making her extremely competitive. With her length of 90 feet, the yacht has an interesting rating and is for sure able to win some trophies at the St Barths Bucket, the Superyacht Cup or the Maxi Rolex Cup.

According to Zademack, several discussions with owners were decisive for the development of the Y9: "Actually, customers were interested in 100 feet in length. However, from this size upwards - in my experience - yachts become disproportionately expensive because many custom-built components have to be installed. With our expertise, we have therefore implemented the comfort of a 100-foot yacht on a length of 90 feet. With our new Y9 we are entering the super yacht segment."

* From David Evans:

Following on from the comments about putting a PLB in your liferaft, I go one better, I have one of Ocean Safety's excellent and very small PLBs permanently attached to my lifejacket, it fits imperceptably under the cover of my Spinlock lifejacket and yet is there all the time. I tend to do all the delivery trip between regattas on my boat singlehanded - which I love. Due to the RORC Safety regulations for offshore racing in the UK, the boat is fitted with a huge array of safety stuff ranging from AIS to wooden plugs.

A couple of years ago sitting at home quietly congratulating myself on having got the boat up to Category 3 of the regulations, and visualising a recent 200 mile trip, I suddenly sat up in shock- spent all this money, feeling smug (always wear a lifejacket on deck when sailing by myself) - my mind rolled events forward, there standing on deck, boat motoring at 6 knots on an empty sea, then me like an idiot slip and goe overboard, there I am floating in my wonderful comfortable colour coded lifejacket, my boat is heading off at six knots on autopilot! A day later my wife gets a call, my boat has been found on the beach in Holland! No sign of me! This can happen to anyone - get a PLB and fit it to your lifejacket!

The Last Word
I realized that there were two groups of people, both purporting to tell the truth. One group encouraged you to doubt them and learn about everything. The other group told you to ignore everyone but them and never question their authority. One need know nothing but that to determine which one is full of shit. -- Noah Lugeons
