Arnaud Gaist out of the GGR
The Golden Globe Race fleet is stretched 5000 miles across the Southern Ocean and is not short of stories. Just nine sailors are still bound for Les Sables d'Olonne in France and they are not even halfway! The weather, as much as it has been frustrating and even slow for the sailors, is not bringing the usual intense Southern Ocean storms and that is a good thing. The two months delay starting this edition was obviously a good decision, but then getting around Cape Horn before the end of March 2023 and the "Hobart Gate" closing on the 31st of January for slow entrants is a whole new threat! The Golden Globe is full of challenges. It is hard to get to the start and even harder to make the finish.

Arnaud Gaist (FRA) has been plagued by rigging issues over the past few weeks and now, on top, also with barnacles, He has given up! Today he is 200 miles out of Saint Helena. He officially notified GGR control that he is retiring from the race and is heading north, unable to sail to windward. It took a long, frustrating and depressing time to make the decision but now that it's done he feels relaxed. After three years of planning and preparation it is a hard decision to make. With another 150 days of food on board, he is planning to head eventually to the Caribbean and then on to Les Sables d'Olonne once Hermes Phoning is back in shape.

The jury was impressed by the portable tracker: "Beautifully designed, very portable sailing performance tracker with a price point making it accessible to many sailors and an operation that should take the hard work out of analysis. 'Woody' Took The Wind Out Of His Son 'Herman' Sails
Historical 18 "The Mistake" skippered by John Winning. Click on image for photo gallery.

Woody Legendary 18 footer sailor and former JJ Giltinan world, Australian and NSW champion John 'Woody' Winning (Yandoo), along with Fang Warren and Josh Porebski, lowered the colours of the previously unbeaten Andoo, skippered by his son John 'Herman' Winning in a wonderful Race 3 of the 2022-23 NSW 18ft skiff Championship on Sydney Harbour last Sunday.

The battle between the two champion teams actually began the week before when the Andoo teams of John 'Herman' Winning, Seve Jarvin and Sam Newton got the upper hand of a battle which saw the two teams racing with just a few seconds separating them for the first half of the course.

That day Andoo went on to win the 18-knot North East wind race by 2m48s.

On Sunday, with similar conditions on Sydney Harbour, the "70½"-year-old 'Woody' got bragging rights back from 'Herman' when his Yandoo team led for almost the entire course before going on to a 45s victory over Andoo.

The Australian 18 Footers League fleet now goes into a four weeks break (until January15) until the NSW Championship continues with the final two races.

Andoo leads the points table at the moment with a total of 4 points, followed by Yandoo on 9, Smeg (Michael Coxon) on 15, Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price) 19, Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Jim Colley) on 21, Fisher & Paykel (Jordan Girdis) 22, Birkenhead Point Marina (Kirk Mitchell) 23, Lazarus (Marcus Ashley-Jones) 26, Burrawang-Young Henrys (Simon Nearn) 29 and Balmain Slake (Henry Larkings) on 30.

'Woody', who continues to prove that age is just a number on a piece of paper, the "70 1/2"-year-old not only races and wins championship races in the modern 18s fleet each Sunday on Sydney Harbour he also skippers an Historical 18 (named The Mistake) each Saturday from the Sydney Flying Squadron. -- Frank Quealey Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Paul Meilhat: "I Really Thrive In This Kind Of Project"
This year has been busy for Paul Meilhat. Between the build of his new Imoca Biotherm (sistership of LinkedOut) at Persico Marine then with minimal preparation for the Route du Rhum-Destination and the race itself in which he finished in sixth place, it has been a full on 2022. And it's far from over as the French skipper flies to Alicante on Saturday to start getting ready for The Ocean Race which starts on January 15. Even so, he still found the time to answer questions from Tip & Shaft.

It was just a year ago when Biotherm signed up to support you on your Vendee Globe project. Since then you have built a boat and finished sixth in the Rhum, did you imagine at the time that you would be here, where you are, one year later?

Yes, I have to say it is what I imagined it yes, because that was what as planned, but it's true that the with less than a year between the signing of the contract and the start of the Route du Rhum building new boat in the middle, it was quite incredible to achieve what we managed. And the cherry on top is that the Route du Rhum went really well. But is is also because from the start, given the very tight timing, we chose to be very pragmatic in everything we did.

And so has this year been hard for you? Was it some kind of victory to be at the start of Rhum?

It was hard, tiring, yes, but I really do thrive in this kind of project I love it, it's what allowed me to keep up the intensity, the work rate. It's no secret that I would have liked to decompress a bit after the Route du Rhum, but no, we're cracking on at the same pace as The Ocean Race starts in a month, but this is what I want to do. As for it being a kind of win to be at the start of the Route du Rhum it was clear that it was a win for the team and for Biotherm, but in my own mind that's not how I saw it, my objective was to go racing. I hadn't sailed solo for four years. It was great to get back into it and I loved it. Especially since from the start we were really into Solitaire du Figaro mode, I had said that no one would pass through the Chenal du Four at night, and in the end, we all did so, taking the Raz de Sein in our stride. Afterwards things really actually calmed down a lot. If we look at the stats this edition is one of the least windy in history, I have a 15 knots wind average, with a maximum wind of 40 knots, we had more of 30 knots for five hours, we only really had the one front.

"We Need YOU!" to race around the world!
In what may be a last chance for sailors to sign up for the 2023 Ocean Globe Race around the world, Don McIntyre, organiser of the event and Captain Coconut, retired Navy commander Mark Sinclair of Golden Globe fame, are looking for crew to sail with them in the OGR!

Don McIntyre announced today he is entering his classic 1978 Nautor Swan 57 ketch "EXPLORER" in this gruelling 50th anniversary recreation of the first ever crewed race, the original 1973 Whitbread. Crew places are open now for ordinary sailors to join the team. Mark Sinclair, recently retired from the 2022 Golden Globe Race will skipper the SAYULA CLASS entry and build the team. Don McIntyre will sail on leg three around Cape Horn and is excited to offer this opportunity to all sailors looking to challenge themselves and dreaming of a circumnavigation.

The OGR begins on September 10th next year from Europe and over eight months a grand adventure will unfold. For the first time in nearly 30 years, a fleet of 20 classic and historic yachts sailed by amateur sailors and legends will face off against all the oceans of the world in an epic voyage and life defining experience. Racing round all the great capes, including the infamous Cape Horn, stopovers will include Cape Town, Auckland and Punta Del Este in Uruguay.

Cup Critiqued: AC37 - December 2022 Rankings - Who's ahead?
Just over a year ago, in mid-November 2021, the Protocol governing the 37th America's Cup was announced.

Subsequently, five teams entered the event. The venue has been announced for Barcelona, with the regatta set down for August-October 2024 - a month following Paris 2024 Olympics. The Match itself begins on October 12, 2024. It will be the fourth of eight America's Cup Matches since 2000 where the Match has not been contested on the home waters of the Defending Club.

In previous America's Cup cycles, with one exception, the teams have been able to build two race boats and run a two-boat testing program. That was in 2017 - which was AC45 test boats and just a single, largely one-design AC50 allowed. But the Kiwis, with the clever use of a rudder gantry, could mimic the foiling geometry and other characterises of an AC50 and effectively ran a two-boat AC50 program.

For the 2024 Cup, the teams have to decide which of several directions they will take on their pathway to the Cup.

Mystic Seaport Museum begins restoration of a 135-year-old racing yacht
Historical photo of Coronet. Photo courtesy Mystic Seaport Museum. Click on image to enlarge.

Coronet "Coronet" - a Schooner built in 1885 has made its way from its home in Rhode Island to Mystic Seaport Museum in southeastern Connecticut to begin a three-year restoration to return it to its former glory.

The yacht is just a floating hull with some original fixtures and will cost several million dollars to recreate. It's considered to be one of the last 'Gilded Age Yachts' of its type.

"There's a few frames and a few bits of some of the supporting knees inside, but a lot of it is new wood. There's not many wooden structures in the world from 1885 that consist of their original fabric," said Chris Gasiorek, the museum's senior vice president of operations and watercraft.

The museum has taken on these projects before. It's home to the whaling ship "Charles W. Morgan," the oldest commercial vessel afloat from 1841, which has probably half or more of its original wood remaining, "but that is very rare," Gasiorek said.

Dury Alonso
Dury Alonso Alejandro 'Dury' Alonso, who died in the early hours of Saturday morning, was one of the media greats of the Spanish sailing scene. He was passionate about ocean racing and through his media reporting, was instrumental in introducing the Spanish public to the world's great ocean races, such as the Vendee Globe, Route du Rhum, Jules Verne and many more.

One of his early forays into offshore racing was as the communications director of Javier de la Gandara's Galicia93Pesconova campaign in the 1993/94 Whitbread Race, a campaign that not only sealed Javier and his young team into the history of the race, but was also a springboard for Dury to feature as a go-to person in press teams for leading events including the Volvo Ocean Race, America's Cup, and the TP52 MedCup Series. He was also a regular feature at most of Spain's regatta circuits.

Alongside his work in the sailing industry, he was heavily involved in the development of the iconic VIG-BAY half marathon, which led him to become one of the key advisors to the Spanish Athletics Federation.

But to those of us that that were lucky enough to know him, he was a humble, honest and funny man, helpful and supportive in the extreme, and the greatest addition to any media team or press office.

He will be sorely missed - sail on friend! -- Victoria Low

Jaume Soler has dedicated the latest episode of Tripulante 18 to Dury Alonso. Javier de la Gandara, Miguel Lareo, Carlos Pich, Pedro Sardina and Nicolas Terry join him to swap stories and anecdotes. Listen here
