Sydney Ready To Welcome World Match Racing Tour Final
The line-up for the 2022 finale of the World Match Racing Tour has been confirmed with ten teams heading to Sydney, Australia to compete at the WMRT Final for the Open Match Racing World Championship title 13-18 December in Sydney Harbour. The event is being co-hosted with the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA), home of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, with five scheduled race days from Wednesday 14 to Sunday 18 December 2022.

The change of venue to Sydney for the 2022 WMRT Final follows the ongoing border closures in China during 2022, where the WMRT Final was previously scheduled to take place in Shenzhen from 6-11 December. Strict travel restrictions for international visitors to China since 2020 prevented the tour from hosting the final in China this year, hence the change of venue to Sydney with the kind support of the CYCA.

Seven countries are being represented at this year's WMRT Final for the Open Match Racing World Championship. Denmark, Estonia, France and Italy each have one entry, whilst hosts Australia, New Zealand and the USA will each field two teams for the event. Defending world champion Taylor Canfield (USA) and six-time world champion Ian William (GBR) were unable to attend the event.

American Chris Poole heads into the world championship as one of the favourites. Poole currently leads the overall Tour Leader board, after finishing third at the Long Beach Yacht Club's 57th Congressional Cup in April, followed by a regatta win at the Chicago Grand Slam WMRT Qualifier event in August. Fellow Americans David Hood and his DH3 Racing team complete the USA line-up having had strong results at events in Los Angeles and Italy this year.

Strong line-up already for the second IMA Maxi Europeans
The second edition of the International Maxi Association's Maxi European Championship is to take place again as part of Tre Golfi Sailing Week, out of Sorrento's Marina Piccola over 12-18 May 2023.

Supported by Rolex, the event is run by the Circolo Remo e Vela Italia (CRVI) in conjunction with the IMA, the body officially tasked by World Sailing to administer and develop maxi yacht racing internationally. The event is supported by the Yacht Club Italiano and the Reale Yacht Club Canottieri Savoia.

The IMA Maxi European Championship will provide a mix of inshore and coastal courses, including an overnight race, which will launch the event: the 68th edition of the Regata dei Tre Golfi, the second oldest distance race in the Italian yachting calendar after the Rolex Giraglia. This will set sail at 1700 on Friday 12 May from Naples' Castel dell'Ovo, where the CRVI's clubhouse is located within Santa Lucia Marina.

The Regata dei Tre Golfi's 150 mile course takes the boats from Naples, past Procida, west-northwest to the island of Ponza. After rounding this turning mark, competitors return, past Ventotene and Ischia, towards Punta Campanella, the tip of the Sorrento Peninsula. They then round the Li Galli islands off the Amalfi coast, before returning around the south side of Capri back into the Bay of Naples, and this year, for the first time, finishing off Sorrento.

In 2022 Furio Benussi's 100ft maxi ARCA SGR won line honours and in light conditions narrowly bettered the elapsed time of Giovanni Soldini's Multi70 trimaran Maserati. However Peter Dubens' former Maxi 72 North Star (ex Rán 2) prevailed under IRC corrected time after an intense match race with Sir Peter Ogden's Judel/Vrolijk 77 Jethou.

Over Monday to Thursday, 15-18 May, will be the inshore/coastal races of the IMA Maxi Europeans for the Maxi Yacht Sorrento Trophy. Racing for this will be run by the IMA's Principal Race Officer for the event, Stuart Childerley, who aside from being a multiple World Champion and ex-Olympic sailor, as a PRO has run racing at the Olympic Games, for the GC32 Racing Tour, the Royal Ocean Racing Club and numerous World and European Championships. -- James Boyd

(Mighty) congratulations all round - Nautor's Swan
Nautor's Swan When the first ClubSwan 80 made its racing debut at Porto Cervo in September more than a few of those most closely involved were collectively holding their breath. They need not have worried...

When Nautor Swan announced their new ClubSwan 80 at the Düsseldorf Boat Show in 2020 they knew they had set themselves an ambitious goal. But what they and indeed everyone else hadn't predicted was the arrival of a global pandemic that would turn the world on its head. Almost two years later and with the ClubSwan 80 afloat and with early results from the racecourse now declared, the project is still raising eyebrows and the reasons are clear.

This is a stunningly good looking, high-performance carbon racer, but one that has also been created to be a strict owner-driven one-design. These are factors that place her in a category of her own from the start, but there's more. This is a carbon composite rocket ship that can be reconfigured in hours to be a performance cruiser, capable of being sailed shorthanded. And even then, with all this in mind, the final key objective is arguably the boldest, to ensure that she can fight it out with the best in a handicap fleet.

122-Year-Old Waverley Yacht Class Connects Two Northern Ireland Finalists in the RYA Club of the Year Awards
A newspaper photograph of Waverley Number 7 Lilias (Mr James Mahood)competing in Whitehead on Belfast Lough in August 1929 Credit: courtesy Waverley Class. Click on image for photo gallery.

Waverley Class Northern Ireland's Ballyholme Yacht Club and County Antrim Yacht Club have both been announced as finalists in the RYA Club of the Year 2023.

Although six miles apart on opposite sides of Belfast Lough, the clubs were formed within about twenty years of each other, CAYC emerging with the twentieth century in 1902 and Ballyholme in 1919. But one keelboat class connects the two, the Waverley class, designed by John Wylie and first raced in 1903 at Whitehead, the home of County Antrim YC. By the end of WW1, the class was no longer exclusive to CAYC, and two boats were built at Ballyholme. By 1961 when the class had been reformed as a racing class at BYC, there were Waverleys at most Belfast Lough Clubs. Now the class has moved on again, this time to Strangford Lough Yacht Club at Whiterock. -- Betty Armstrong

Caribbean Multihull Challenge As we race to the start of the 5th Caribbean Multihull Challenge - 3 February, all good things are happening. The Racing list is growing containing a host of fast, powerful multihulls ready to duke it out on the water.
