Moth World Championship
The Moth 2022 World Championship, organized by the Yacht Club Argentino at its headquarters in Dársena Norte, came to an end. It was a challenging event: conditions weren't always easy, but we managed to have thirteen fair races that gave us new champions.

On the sixth and last day, three races were completed. In the first race, 8 knots were blowing from the NE sector. Massimo Contessi won this race.

As the day went on, the wind shifted to the east and reduced its intensity. The Italian Francesco Bruni won the last two races and took the title of Master World Champion.

After thirteen races, british Dylan Fletcher Scott was crowned World Champion in the Moth 2022 Class, with a total of seventeen points. Argentina's Massimo Contessi came in second place with twenty-seven points and also received the title of Junior World Champion. Completing the podium was Italy's Simone Salva, with thirty-six points. Helena Scutt was crowned Female World Champion.

The top ten is completed by the following sailors:
4th Brad Funk | USA
5th Richard Didham | USA
6th Francesco Bruni | ITA
7th Robert Greenhalgh | AUS
8th Harry Melgues | USA
9th Enzo Balanger | FRA
10th Sebastien Schneiter | SUI

18ft Skiffs NSW Championship, Race 2
Smeg hits the wake of a passing power boat. Click on image for photo gallery.

18ft Skiffs The Andoo team of John Winning Jr., Seve Jarvin and Sam Newton extended its lead in the NSW 18ft Skiff Championship with another top class exhibition in the North East wind conditions which prevailed for Race 2 of the series on Sydney Harbour today.

After trailing the early race leader Yandoo (John Winning, Fang Warren and Josh Porebski) for the first lap of the course, the Andoo team grabbed the lead midway up the second windward leg of the course and were never headed again before finishing 1m48s ahead of Yandoo.

Third place went to Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Jim Colley, Max Paul and Tom Quigley), which finished a further 1m15s behind Yandoo.

Lazarus (Marcus Ashley-Jones) came back strongly after a slow start to finish in fourth place, ahead of Fisher & Paykel (Jordan Girdis), Smeg (Michael Coxon), Birkenhead Point Marina (Kirk Mitchell) and Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price).

Andoo heads the points table on 2 points, followed by Smeg and Yandoo both on 8 points, Fisher & Paykel on 9, Rag & Famish Hotel 13, and Birkenhead Point Marina on 14.

Shaw & Partners won the start and led early but lost the lead when the team elected to go to the RHS of the course while most of the fleet went to the left (along the northern shore).

Race 3 of the NSW Championship, and the Sid Barnett Jr. Memorial Trophy, will be sailed next Sunday (December 11). -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Wight Vodka Best Sailors Bar
Wight Vodka Best Sailors Bar Today we honor the first winner, way back in 2009... An establishment still going strong and whose reputation for conviviality has continued to grow.

We're talking about Peter's Cafe Sport in Horta, Azores

'The Peter' won due to the faithful voting of the thousands of yachters who have experienced the warm hospitality, great food and excellent cocktails there. Yachtsman Bill Stone wrote a rather passionate description of the Cafe Sport when he cast his vote:

"To a sailor, the 'best sailor's bar' is quite obvious - she has no peer in the Atlantic, or, it can be argued, any place else on earth. It has history and tradition, it is not easy to get to, and once within its walls there is a rare camaraderie that permeates this hallowed berth. The memory of a seat is a sirens song to passaging itself, imbuing memories impossible to forget. This is Peter Cafe Sport*. Those fortunate enough to have laughed with their mates at Pete's carry with them their own Shangri-La."

All previous winners are eligible for this year's award... Please tell us about your favorite refuge from life's storms...

Always totally custom made - Smart Rigging
Smart Rigging SmartRigging delivers sophisticated rigging to an extraordinary spread of customers from AC winners to International 14s, Imoca 60s and giant land-based and offshore cranes. Safe to say they've got the hang of it...

Many people might think of composite rigging as new cuttingedge technology, but SmartRigging has been building PBO rigging since 2005 and solid carbon rigging since 2010. By now they have serious experience, more than a decade of client feedback and an impressive list of high-profile happy clients.

The company was founded by a passionate multihull racer with the idea to try and prevent metal fatigue in traditional steel rigging. They experimented with PBO cables to be used as standing rigging, and then built a factory to produce them on an industrial scale in Joure in the Netherlands, where the company remains based to this day.

Within two years of its launch the company had become a world leader in the new field of composite rigging, with the initial product adapted to cover all standing rigging needs. A large range of weight conscious high performance raceboats used the initial system, from International 14s to high performance monohull and multihull classes like Imoca 60s, Orma 60s, M2s and Extreme 40s.

Eileen Ramsay - the Queen of Yachting Photography
Eileen Ramsay Eileen Ramsay was at the centre of a unique period in yachting history, and this wonderful book, featuring her classic photography, celebrates an extraordinary woman and her extraordinary subjects. Eileen's heyday was between 1950 and 1970 - a time when eccentrics ruled, records were there for the setting, and women weren't often to be found behind the lens. But Eileen established herself as one of the greatest yachting photographers of her time, taking famous portraits of sailing icons like Francis Chichester and Eric Tabarly, Olympians, including Rodney Pattisson and Keith Musto, and historic pictures from the first Observer Singlehanded Transatlantic (OSTAR) Races. She was the only photographer Chichester allowed on his Gipsy Moth yachts, and commissioned to photograph notorious charmers like Uffa Fox and Max Aitken, learned to stave off their amorous advances.

Eileen Ramsay - the Queen of Yachting Photography, is a spectacular celebration of a pioneering photographer and a fascinating time in yachting history.

Nearly 200 sailors are expected to compete in 2023 Transat Jacques Vabre
In October 2023, the Transat Jacques Vabre Normandie Le Havre will celebrate its thirtieth anniversary in Le Havre before the famous two-handed Tranatlantic race heads to Martinique, where the finish of the race known as the Route du Cafe will be hosted for the second time in a row.

It is an anniversary that nearly 100 duos across the three open classes -IMOCA, Ocean Fifty and Class40 - have already marked on their calendars as the highlight of their 2023 season. And this 16th edition of the race, which is the longest of the Transats, will once again see a very popular celebration take place in Le Havre which has been the historic start port since 1993.

And so too at the end of the highly intense, top level race between Normandy and Martinique which follows three courses of different, appropriate lengths, the grouped finishes into Fort-de-France also promise a real festival atmosphere.

The maturity the bi-annual event ensures it retains an important position on the ocean racing calendar. It is a major, classic race which has found its natural home in Normandy and in Le Havre, France's leading coffee port which has been its historic starting port since 1993. And from the 20th October - the opening date of the Race Village - a big public festival around the Paul Vatine baisin runs right through until start day on the 29th October. It is a hugely popular rendez-vous which draws a big public attendance but which minimises its environmental footprint, which has been recognized as a benchmark event by ADEME* since 2009.

Three courses of different lengths which should mean grouped finishes

Because of the differences in speed potential of the three classes, Race Direction are working on developing three different courses. This innovation was tested in 2021 to guarantee grouped arrivals in Martinique, this making sure everyone shares the one big party and maximum media exposure for all competitors. The Class40s race only in the North Atlantic and will have some 4,500 miles to cover, which makes the Route du Cafe their longest transatlantic race. As for the Ocean Fifty and IMOCA, they will race a course into the South Atlantic with two passages through the Doldrums and a total of nearly 6,000 miles of racing

Mistral claims historic Cabbage Tree Island Race win as two-handers sweep podium
Mistral is the first two-handed boat to win Overall honours in one of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia's major races, with co-skippers Rupert Henry and Greg O'Shea leading a two-handed sweep of the podium in the 2022 Cabbage Tree Island Race.

Sailing on Henry's Lombard 34 in the fifth race of the 2022/23 Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore, Henry and O'Shea completed the 172 nautical mile course in 22 hours, 27 minutes and 51 seconds.

Mistral was the only boat of the 69 in the fleet to finish with an IRC corrected time of less than a day, taking handicap honours ahead of fellow two-handers Disko Trooper_Contender Sailcloth (Jules Hall/Jan Scholten) and Transcendence Crento (Martin Cross/John Cross).

Two-handed entrants became eligible to claim Overall victory in Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore races earlier this year.

Transcendence Crento was the first Corinthian boat on corrected time, ahead of Rum Rebellion (Shane Connelly/Tony Sutton) and Midnight Rambler (Ed Psaltis). Meanwhile, Roberto Camacho's J/122 Joss finished top of the Wild Rose Pointscore, featuring boats with at least 10% female crew members.

The final race of the 2022/23 Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore is the 2022 Rolex Sydney Hobart, which begins at 1pm (AEDT) on Monday 26 December.
