British Yachting Awards
The winners of the 2022 British Yachting Awards, organised by Sailing Today with Yachts & Yachting magazine, were announced yesterday evening at The Royal Thames Yacht Club. Voted for by the public, the RORC organised Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race won event of the year and RORC member Ellie Driver was voted Pantaenius Sailor of the Year.

The Sevenstar Round Britain & Ireland Race winning the 2022 British Yachting Awards Event of the Year, rounds off an excellent year for the RORC Race and Media teams. Race team member and Principle Race Officer Steve Cole represented the RORC to receive the trophy. The RORC was also Highly Commended in the category for the Outstanding Achievement Award.

2022 Pantaenius Sailor of the Year, Ellie Driver is just 20 years old. Jim & Ellie Driver raced Sun Fast 3300 Chilli Pepper in IRC Two-Handed throughout the 2022 RORC Season's Points Championship. Notably Chilli Pepper won the Morgan Cup overall under IRC and in August Ellie became the youngest ever skipper to finish the gruelling Sevenstar Round Britain & Ireland Race.

Richard Palmer & Rupert Holmes, who won the Sevenstar Britain & Ireland Race overall under IRC racing JPK 10.10 Jangada, were Highly Commended in the Sailor of the Year Award. Jangada, which was the overall winner of the RORC Season's Points Championship, was also Voted RORC Yacht of the Year earlier this month.

Congratulations to all the Prize Winners at the 2022 British Yachting Awards, especially Jim Saltonstall who received a Lifetime Achievement Award. Jim has always been involved with the Royal Ocean Racing Club especially in his role as lead coach for the RORC Easter Challenge.

Cup Spy Nov 30 : Not a day for the faint hearted on the Golfo degli Angeli
What happened in the Cup - November 30, 2022:

- Luna Rossa sailed their LEQ12 on the Gulf of Cagliari, in their strongest breeze yet, and had a valuable, incident free session.
- American Magic stayed ashore in Pensacola
- INEOS Britannia stayed in the shed in Barcelona
- Alinghi Red Bull Racing went into the shed in Barcelona on November 16, for upgrades and is yet to emerge
- Emirates Team New Zealand are repairing their AC40/LEQ20 after a violent nosedive on November 21. There is no date announced when it will begin sailing.
- The measurement debate continues as to whether the Brit's Instrumentation Pole is in fact a Mast tube - they are only allowed one Mast tube on the LEQ12
- Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, the Italian America's Cup challenger say they had a "productive practice day" on Wednesday, sailing in their strongest wind yet in their LEQ12 prototype.

It was a day of two halves, with six crew aboard, and the #4 jib - their smallest - was used for the first time in the 17-20kts NW breeze, which greeted the team on their arrival on Golfo degli Angeli (the Gulf of Angels).

The afternoon was better as the breeze became more angelic and the sun appeared.

La Transat Paprec 2023: 150 days until race start
On 30 April 2023 - in just 150 days - La Transat Paprec will officially kick off from Concarneau in Brittany, France, setting sail for Saint-Barthelemy, the 'pearl of the Caribbean'. Around 15 boats are expected to be on the start line including Transat Paprec rookie, Piers Copham (Voiles des Anges – GBR).

Entries are still open for this unique offshore race - formally the Transat AG2R - that not only attracts professional skippers but amateur racers and young talents in the making who can race on equal terms on the Figaro Beneteau 3.

The transatlantic race on the Figaro circuit has been running for more than 30 years and within that time has crowned some of the greatest offshore sailors such as Thomas Ruyant, recent winner of the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe in the IMOCA class.

Taking place every two years, the winners of the 2021 edition, Nils Palmieri and Julien Villion, set the double-handed transat race record of 18 days, 05 hours 08 minutes and 03 seconds. Palmieri testifies, "The race is difficult, it is the only Transat on which everyone has the same boat. The Figaro Beneteau 3 gets very wet, it makes noise. On this boat, double-handed, you never put the autopilot on."

This next edition will mark the first ever transatlantic race for mixed male/female double-handed crews. The landmark move to a mixed racing format comes as part of a joint commitment to increase the participation and opportunities for female skippers from organisers, OC Sport Pen Duick, Title Partner, Paprec and the Figaro class.

Piers Copham is the first British sailor to announce his entry. For his first ever edition of the race, Copham has joined forces with Voiles des Anges, an association that offers a support network for families who have prematurely lost children. The 60-year-old Briton joined the Figaro circuit last season and will announce his co-skipper closer to the race.

Parent power - Magenta Project
Magenta But the key components of it can still be successfully delegated!

When it comes to sailing, a female's first mentor is often her father. Behind all great female sailors is usually a proud papa who was there from her first Opti to first offshore race. Devoted dads appear to be the common denominator in female prosailing careers – dads who shared their passion and encouraged their daughters to find their own place in a predominately male sport. But not all women are lucky enough to have a father to guide her through the sailing world. Some dads do not sail, while some dads can only take their daughters so far. So it is mentors who must step in to raise these female talents and create opportunities for them to succeed.

Circumnavigator and Magenta Project mentor Tim Kent mentored his own two daughters, Whitney and Alison in their sailing careers, but has also actively mentored other aspiring female sailors.

'I have had mixed crews on my boats since I began racing. When I had fully crewed boats, half of the crew would usually be women. I met my wife when she crewed on a boat I was running. My daughters raced with us from their earliest days and grew up trading wisecracks and sailing knowledge with the men and women on our boats," says Kent.

Barcelona Will Host 2023 Rolex TP52 World Championship
The 2023 Rolex TP52 World Championship will be contested on the 37th America's Cup racing waters off Barcelona during the week 21st to 26th August when Doug DeVos' Quantum Racing powered by American Magic will seek to defend the world title which they won this year in Cascais.

It is the first time that the Rolex TP52 World Championship will be held in the Catalan capital city, following recent years in Scarlino, Menorca, Cascais and Puerto Portals, Mallorca. The event will be hosted by the Club Nàutic Vilassar de Mar and run out of the Marina Vela facility which is adjacent to the iconic W Hotel.

Racing in late August should see the fleet enjoying varied conditions, hopefully mainly in the famous SW'ly Garbi sea breeze which usually blows around 11-12kts and sometimes up to 16 or 18kts in the summer months.

Good Breeze On The Cards For Datchet Flyer
Moderate north-westerlies are forecast for this weekend's Datchet Flyer the second event in this season's Seldén SailJuice Winter Series. Almost 50 boats from more than 25 different dinghy classes have entered, with many of the usual suspects along with some new names competing in Sailjuice events for the first time.

Fraser Hayden from Papercourt finished runner-up two years ago at Datchet, and is back in his Solo to see if he can go one better. Maybe managing director of Seldén, Steve Norbury, will give Hayden a run for his money. Sailing with his old friend and crew from way-back-when in 420s, Andy Hill, Norbury is competing in an RS400.

Offshore racing veteran, Nigel King, is competing in an OK singlehander while Richard Smith's outing at the previous series event, the Fernhurst Books Draycote Dash, shows he could be a threat in his Musto Skiff in moderate conditions.

There are good entries already in 420s, Ospreys and K1 singlehanded keelboats, as well as more unusual entries such as a Snipe, sailed by the National Champion Lloyd Roberts along with Katy Seddon from Bough Beech. If the wind is light, then Jamie Stewart's three-man Thames A-Rater will be hard to hold back.

The following events are in the Seldén SailJuice Winter Series 2022/23:

Fernhurst Books Draycote Dash, Draycote Water Sailing Club - 20 & 21 November 2022
Datchet Flyer, Datchet Water Sailing Club - 3 & 4 December 2022
Yorkshire Dales Brass Monkey, Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club - 27 December 2022
Burghfield Breezer, Burghfield Sailing Club - 27 December 2022
Grafham Grand Prix, Grafham Water Sailing Club - 2 January 2023
Bloody Mary, Queen Mary Sailing Club - 7 January 2023
King George Gallop, King George Sailing Club - 21 January 2023
John Merricks Tiger Trophy, Rutland Sailing Club - 4 & 5 February 2023
Oxford Blue, Oxford Sailing Club - 18 February 2023
Prizegiving at RYA Dinghy Show, Farnborough - 25 February 2023

Online entry for the Datchet Flyer, and all others in the series, is available at www.sailjuiceseries.com

HP30 Class 2023 Programme
HP30 The 2023 season will be the seventh season for the HP30 class and with a dozen boats entered, the racing looks set to continue to be exciting and demanding.

The season points championship comprises seven main events across the summer, including RORC Vice Admiral's Cup, the Royal Southern Summer Series, Round the Island Race and Cowes Week.

This year the HP30 National Championships will be run during Cowes Week, with a mixture of windward / leeward racing and classic round the cans competition.

The fleet comprises a mixture of light-displacement race boats with IRC ratings between 1.050 and 1.100 including MC31's, Farr280s, FarEast28Rs and the Lutra30. Whilst there are no restrictions on the number of professionals who can compete in each team, the majority of boats are Corinthian and owner driven.

Now well established, the HP30 Class aims to deliver fast, exciting racing at reasonable cost.
