Switzerland's 32nd placed IMOCA Ollie Heer "I had my doubts I would make it back into the race"
Swiss skipper Oliver Heer (Oliver Heer Ocean Racing) crossed the finish line of the 12th Route du Rhu- Destination Guadeloupe at 01:37:55hrs TU this Wednesday morning. He is the final IMOCA skipper to cross the line of the solo Transat from Saint Malo to Guadeloupe

His actual elapsed time for the 3542 nautical miles race from Saint Malo to Guadeloupe is 20d 12h 22m 55sec. He crossed the line in 34th place of the 38 starters in the IMOCA class. But because of a collision with another competitor during the first evening of the race which was not his fault and which required him to return to port and make repairs, Heer received 84 hours of time redress and so rises to 32nd overall with a corrected time of 17d 0h 22m 55s. He is net 5d 6h 46m 30s after winner Thomas Ruyant (LInkedOut) the class winner.

The 34 year old solo racer was previously Alex Thomson's boat captain and four years ago was contemplating the repairs needed to Thomson's boat which was damaged when he hit the north end of the island when he failed to wake up. Now Heer has qualified himself and his boat for the 2024 Vendée Globe.

America's Cup: Match dates released - starts on October 12, 2024
The Racing Area for both the Challenger Selection Series and the America's Cup Match itself have now been agreed with Barcelona's Capitán Marítimo and are set to the south of the City along Barcelona's beachfront, affording the perfect natural viewing gallery right along the coastline for spectators.

Also confirmed is the date for the Women's America's Cup Regatta Final which occupies prime time viewing, to a global audience, straight after Race 5 on October 16th 2024, giving the women's event significant coverage and profile. Racing the new and exciting AC40 class set up in strict one-design mode, the sailors that get to the final of the Women's America's Cup will undoubtedly be some of the finest foiling athletes on the planet and a clear pathway to the future of the America's Cup will be on show.

Racing in the America's Cup Match itself, which will be a best of 13 (first to seven) format will commence on Saturday 12th October with two races scheduled, followed by a further two races on Sunday 13th October 2024. Racing will then pause for two days, however at the discretion of the Regatta Director and after consultation with both the Defender and the Challenger, and depending on conditions, both of these days could be used to complete two races a day. The schedule as it stands, without the use of the Monday or Tuesday, would recommence on Wednesday 16th October 2024 for one race (race 5) in the Match followed by the Women's America's Cup Regatta Final as mentioned above.

Thursday 17th October is officially not scheduled for racing but again, subject to the Regatta Director's discretion and agreement with the competitors, could be allocated for two further races depending on conditions whilst Friday 18th October 2024 is officially marked as a 'Spare Day' for up to two more races. Two races per day are also scheduled for Saturday 19th October and Sunday 20th October 2024, if required.

41st Hamble Winter Series
JAGO, Mike and Susie Yates, Yacht of the Series and Paul Heys Trophy winner.

This very well sailed J109, has had a remarkable season, excelling offshore with a third overall in the UK Double Handed Series, including a win in the Double Handed Nationals and then scoring a perfect twelve first places in the twenty one boat, IRC 2 Class, at the Hamble Winter Series. Last year Mike was very disappointed when he did not retain the Paul Heys Trophy for the best performing J Boat. "You told me last year I had to sail faster" said Mike on Sunday and he certainly did, adding the major prize, Yacht of the Series, in the process.

The final Sunday of the 2022 series was a rather dank affair, cloudy with a bit of drizzle. The breeze was SW 5-9 kts dropping to 4 kts in patches towards the end. The CV Wetwheels, set up a quarter of a mile inshore of John Fisher (4Q). PRO Kathy Smalley and her trusted Lieutenant, Peter Bateson, decided to give the IRC Classes a "round the cans" course, but with a windward/leeward flavour. The windward mark was West Knoll (3Y) followed by a range of leeward marks for the different classes. All classes had the final 3 marks in common in case course shortening was needed, but it wasn't, so Jane (4E), Royal Southern (4S) and of course, hamblewinterseries.com (4J) to finish, was the order. The Cape 31s had their normal two lap W-L of 4 miles to start with, followed by the IRC 4 cans race course for Race 2.

Next year's Hamble winter Series, the 42nd, will start on the weekend of the 7th & 8th October 2023 and run until the 3rd December 2023. -- Trevor Pountain

Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series
Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series Act 2: December 2022 - March 2023
In line with the YCM's sailing policy, having been initiated in the Melges 20 class in 2013 at the instigation of Valentin Zavadnikov, then the J/70s, the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series is a monthly programme of regattas and training weekends for one-design boats from December to March.

It has proved a very successful format with more than 350 sailors coming from across Europe to set up their winter training base in the Principality to prepare for the upcoming season's big meetings.

For Monegasque teams, this Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series is their qualifier for the J/70 World Championship being organised for the first time by YCM in partnership with FxPro.

Dancing In Pensacola
Speak with wise-heads in and around the America's Cup and many will point towards the sailing programme being executed out in Pensacola, Florida by the New York Yacht Club American Magic Team as the blueprint to winter training.

Great conditions, a pretty blank canvas to create artistry on, and one of the world's great sailing playgrounds, is the backdrop - perfect to place some of the world's finest foiling sailors for a full-on session. With Tom Slingsby back in the port driving pod and Paul Goodison flying from starboard, the team, who still profess to being in commissioning and training mode with a number of new hires dotted throughout the crew, were absolutely flying today. In total they pulled-off a stunning 34 gybes with 29 foil-to-foil - an 85% success rate - and 23 tacks with 20 foil-to-foil (almost 87% success rate) and that's in to the 'sit up and take notice' realms and the longest to date of any challenger.

With one of the world's best sailmakers, America's Cup and Round the World legend Richard Bouzaid on the coach boat today, it's a very big indicator of where the Americans think the big gains will be found in this cycle. But for now, it's all about getting those vital hours on the water for the sailing team who looked mightily impressive, harnessing enormous power and sending Patriot at speeds of up to 43 knots.

Dragon Class Celebrates 75 Years Of Edinburgh Cup Competition
In 1949 The Edinburgh Cup was gifted to the British Dragon Association (BDA) by the Duke of Edinburgh (Prince Philip) after the members of the Island Sailing Club presented the then Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip with a Dragon named Bluebottle on the occasion of their marriage in 1948. This impressive silver trophy has been awarded annually to the winner of the British Open Dragon Championship ever since.

The first staging of the Edinburgh Cup was in Cowes in 1949 and it was won by Franklin Ratsey Woodroffe in Blue Skies (K214). Prince Philip was a keen Dragon sailor and his intention in presenting the trophy was to use it to popularise the Dragon class around the country with the deed of gift stating that the venue should vary each year. As a result, the regatta has been hosted by clubs from all four nations of the British Isles. 2023 marks 75 years of Edinburgh Cup history when the competition will return once again to Cowes, where the BDA and the Royal Yacht Squadron are planning a spectacular celebration regatta from 14 to 19 August.

Further adding to the prestige of the event, the International Dragon Association (IDA) has announced that the Edinburgh Cup will be one of only four International Grand Prix regattas in 2023 - the IDA's premier international series. With Britain also hosting the Dragon Gold Cup from 9 to 15 September in Torquay, and the option to participate in Cowes Week from 29 July to 7 August, the UK will be a hotspot for Dragon sailing during summer 2023. To encourage maximum international participation special ferry deals, logistical support, and arrangements for boat storage between events are being put in place.

Saunders named New Zealand Sailor of the Year
Tom Saunders picked up the big prize, the Orbit World Travel Sailor of the Year Award, at the annual Aon Yachting Excellence Awards tonight.

The 30-year-old late last year became just the second New Zealander to win the ILCA 7 (Laser) world title since the first event in 1974 and backed that up with fourth at the 2022 world championships. The ILCA 7 is considered the most competitive of all the Olympic classes and Saunders’ form over the past 12 months sets him up well for a tilt at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Saunders collected the Sir Bernard Fergusson Trophy from Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro, who is also Yachting New Zealand patron, at a gala awards dinner attended by more than 250 people at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. The Tauranga sailor was also named Aon Male Sailor of the Year and was a recipient of a Yachting New Zealand Performance Award.

Saunders’ partnership with coach Mike Bullot was also acknowledged with Bullot named B&G Coach of the Year.

Emirates Team New Zealand performance engineer Elise Beavis was named Aon Female Sailor of the Year for winning her second WASZP world title.

Seb Menzies and George Lee Rush collected the NZL Sailing Foundation Young Male Sailor of the Year Award and Helena Sanderson the NZL Sailing Foundation Young Female Sailor of the Year Award.
