First Chinese skipper to finish the Route du Rhum
Chinese solo skipper Jingkun Xu (China Dream-HAIKOU) crossed the finish line of the 12th Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe at 21:49:00hrs this Friday evening (25/11/22) in 29th position in the IMOCA class. His elapsed time of 16d 8h 34m 0s is 4d 14h 57m 35s behind the class winner Thomas Ruyant (LinkedOut).

For the 33 year old sailor from Qingdao who lost part of his left arm in a fireworks accident when he was 12 his is a truly remarkable achievement. His longest previous passage on his IMOCA - formerly Alan Roura's 2007 Finot Conq design - was the 2000 miles race qualifier before he took on this legendary 3542 miles solo ocean race from Saint Malo to Guadeloupe.

He becomes the first Chinese sailor to finish the race and qualifies himself for the Vendée Globe.

AC40: Implementing The Solution
Just days ago, Emirates Team New Zealand buried the bow of their AC40 while testing in waves on Auckland's Hauraki Gulf, which resulted in damage to the forward sections of the hull and deck structure. While the on-water team was recovering the yacht and returning to dock, the team's engineers immediately began reviewing onboard data to identify the root cause of the issue.

"The first things we look at in this type of dynamic event are the accelerations and rotation rates that come from yacht's inertial measurement unit (IMU)," explained Jamie Timms, Emirates Team New Zealand Structural Engineer. "These readings allow us to infer the magnitude of the hydrodynamic loads on the hull structure, which we can then input into our structural simulations to estimate the stress state and structural margins of safety. We also use the data to validate our fluid dynamics simulations of high velocity hull impacts."

"During the 36th America's Cup, we captured and catalogued the dynamics of every major event across the three yachts we sailed in that campaign and we enveloped those, with additional margin, to define the load cases for the AC40. Over the first 18 days of sailing the AC40, we'd seen a couple of events that generated large impacts. These had been lining up with our design load cases and the hull structure was performing as expected. However, this latest event saw accelerations that were far beyond all our previous records."

With this new data in hand, the team's engineers have designed an internal structure upgrade package that will be rolled into all current and future AC40 yachts.

"The good news is there will be no change to the delivery schedule to the remaining AC40s currently in build and the bow upgrade package will be shortly sent from the McConaghy yard for retro fitting to the three AC40s that have already been delivered."

AEGEAN 600 2023 to be held between 7-15 July
AEGEAN 600 Dates have been set for the 3rd AEGEAN 600 edition.

The sea of myths and legends. The sea of Homer, Seferis and Elytis. The sea of painters and philosophers. The sea of sailors. 600 miles of sailing in this sea.

An offshore race designed by sailors for sailors. A race where the wind god, Aeolus, will make his own game to control sailors' seamanship. A race where the dolphins will accompany the boats to drive them faster to the finish. A race with enchanting sunrises and sunsets. A race where mythology rewards sport in a unique water track. All this and much more is the "Aegean 600". A non-stop race.

The Start is given by Homer's sanctuary, in front of the columns of Poseidon's temple, and with the wishes of the mythical god of the sea the boats sail for Milos, the home of the Venus of Milos, the prize of the Louvre de Paris. Surrounded by Cycladic white, they reach the scenic Caldera of Santorini, where the white of the houses blends with the volcanic rock creating unique contrasts and images. They continue towards the southernmost island of the Aegean Sea, Kassos, and leaving Karpathos on the left, the nativity island of Athena, and the residence of Prometheus, reach the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights in Rhodes. The course continues towards scenic Kos and Kalymnos, the island of sponge divers, while on the way they meet, besides dolphins, beautiful small islands, each with its own history.

The fleet sails next to the full color islands of Pharmakonisi and Agathonisi, and continue to Ikario Pelagos, a sea that offers strong sailing excitement. The sailors meet Patmos, the island of Saint John and the Cave of the Apocalypse, and head to cosmopolitan Mykonos and Delos, the birthplace of Apollo. The last islands of the route are Giaros and Kea. Slowly Finally the contestants face the Temple of Poseidon that will mark the end of the sailing adventure and the race.

Marina Lanzarote readies for the RORC Transatlantic Race
With just over one month to go until the start of the 2023 RORC Transatlantic Race, Marina Lanzarote is ready to receive the international fleet which will set off on Sunday 8th of January for the 3,000-mile race across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean spice island of Grenada.

More than 20 race boats from seven different nations are expected, including six Maxis and three of the world's fastest ocean-going multihulls. For the second year, the RORC Transatlantic Race is supported by the Yacht Club de France, and close to half of the 2023 fleet will be flying the French tricolour in Marina Lanzarote. Supported by Calero Marinas since the first race in 2014, the event is one that all the team in Lanzarote look forward to with passion and commitment.

A trio of world record-breaking multihulls will once again lock horns in the 2023 RORC Transatlantic Race. The 2022 showdown was nothing short of epic with Giovanni Soldini's Multi70 Maserati winning a photo-finish in Grenada. Maserati is back and taking part in their fourth race, having taken Multihull Line Honours on two previous occasions. This year's top competition for Maserati comes from two MOD70s that have raced before, but are now under new ownership. From France, Zoulou will be sailed by Erik Maris, and from the United States, the MOD70 Snowflake will be sailed by Frank Slootman. All three boats are equipped with lifting foils and are capable of speeds in excess of 35 knots.

Six powerful Maxis have already entered for 2023 to battle for the IMA Transatlantic Race Trophy, as well as the overall win under IRC for the RORC Transatlantic Race Trophy. The largest boat in this year's race is the Swan 115 Jasi, skippered by Toby Clark. Contender for Monohull Line Honours includes the Botin 65 Spirit of Lorina, sailed by IMA member Jean-Pierre Barjon, winner of the IMA's 2021-22 Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge. Historic Ocean Racing Maxis include Pen Duick VI, skippered by Marie Tabarly, and the Z86 Way of Life, skippered by IMA Member Gasper Vincec.

Wight Vodka Best Sailor's Bar Competion
Wight Vodka Tonight we honour a TWO TIME winner... The King & Queen of Hamble UK. Their first win was in 2014, the second in 2020.

If you've ever come in from the Solent with your boots filled with a little too much sea water, and happened upon The King & Queen in Hamble, you will have a full appreciation of the King & Quenn

In announcing the 2014 award, Dan Hiza, co-owner of 50° North, the company behind Wight Vodka, said "This year's contest had more votes than any of the previous five contests run, and the King & Queen ran away with the competition in the final week with over 1,000 more votes than the runners up. With this said, we can most definitely claim that there is huge passion the world over from our yachting fraternity on shouting about their favourite bars. With the King & Queen taking top honours, Sue and her team at the Pier View in Cowes can be proud of their coming in 2nd, with the venerable Royal Bermuda Yacht Club rounding out the podium finishers in 3rd place. The other bars rounding out the top ten include the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, Foxy's on Jost Van Dyke, the Haven in Lymington, the Union Inn Cowes, the Clipper Bar in Porto Cervo, the Bitter End on Virgin Gorda and the Divers Inn in Alderney on the Channel Islands."

Dan continued "This contest is a blast to run, and the King & Queen definitely deserved the win this year. This is the first year that a British bar has won, and the King & Queen now join The Peter Cafe Sport in the Azores, the Soggy Dollar on Jost Van Dyke, IYAC in Newport, Rhode Island, the Sint Maarten Yacht Club, and the One Bar Playa Blanca in Lanzarote as the World's Favourite. Congratulations and long may the party last!"

Finn Portuguese National Championship and Portuguese National Qualifying Event - ILCA
This weekend Cascais hosted the Finn Portuguese National Championship, which hadn't been officially disputed for 15 years - since 2007. Simultaneously, it was also disputed the first Portuguese National Qualifying Event (PAN) of the 2022/2023 season for ILCA 4, 6 and 7.

Although Sunday it wasn't possible to hold any races due to no wind, on Saturday the wind blowing from the east quadrant, with an intensity between 12 and 6 knots, allowed 3 races for the approximately 100 sailors competing this weekend: 20 in Finn; 42 in ILCA 4; 32 in ILCA 6; 7 in the ILCA 7.

In the Finns, the Spanish Miguel Fernandez Vasco, European Champion, dominated the first two races, but a technical problem made him withdraw from the third, so he ended up finishing in 7th place. The victory went to Peter Peet, from Netherland, with 7 points, immediately followed by Nuno Espírito Santo Silva, who became National Champion of the class, and the Australian Paul Mckenzie, tied with 11 points.

In the ILCA 7, José Mendes won two of the disputed regattas and finished second in the other, thus finishing in 1st place, with 4 points. Eduardo Marques, with 6 points, was 2nd, and Lourenço Mateus, with 8, was 3rd.

In ILCA 6, the fight for the first place was fierce between the Olympic sailor Vasileia Karachaliou and Joao Pontes, with both sharing the first two places in the three races disputed. With two first places and one second, Vasileia ended up securing the highest place on the podium, with 4 points, immediately followed by the young sailor Joao Pontes, who finished with 5 points (2nd, 1st, 2nd) and won the junior category. Closing the podium was Pablo Astiazaran, who had three third places.
