Jean Pierre Dick wins Rhum Mono Class
Twice winner of the Barcelona World Race round the world, 'JP' decided a while back that he has unfinished business with the famous solo Transatlantic, not least because he has a boat which he feels can be successful, but he also wanted to commemorate his father who died 30 years ago, and the skipper who is originally from Nice wanted to publicise the plight of his native Mediterranean.

"I had the boat to win in 2010 and I felt like my story with the race is not over." Dick recalled before the start, speaking of his fourth place behind Roland Jourdain, Armel Le Cleac'h and Marc Guillemot.

"JP managed to cross the fronts well, intelligently," analyzes Yann Elies who describes his former co-skipper as "like an albatross, he is only happy at sea. He is a tough in the hard stuff, someone who knows how to give everything of themselves, to face up to the the elements. Sometimes he even forgets a little to take care of himself. He is happy at sea."

On November 13, while he was leading the Rhum Mono class, the skipper of Notre Mediterranee - Ville de Nice was rerouted by the Race Direction of La Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe to pick up Brieuc Maisonneuve following the capsizing of his catamaran CMA Ile-de-France - 60,000 Rebonds. Accomplishing this in a safe, seamanlike manner before dropping him off in San Miguel (Azores) on 17 November. He was given eight hours redress.

Loic Escoffier wins Rhum Multi, Roland Jourdain denied hat trick by engine seal penalty
Loic Escoffier (Lodigroup) who crossed the finish line second has been declared winner of the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe in the Rhum Multi division. He crossed line at Pointe-a-Pitre line at 19:52:23hrs some 46 mins 23 seconds after his nearest adversary Roland Jourdain (We Explore). But Jourdain has been given a statutory time penalty of 90 minutes as had a broken lead seal on his boat and so drops to second place.

But minutes after crossing the line Escoffier got a call from Race Director Francis Le Goff to tell him that Roland Jourdain had been penalised the statutory 90 minutes for a broken engine seal and he was therefore winner of the Rhum Multi class.

Jourdain's penalty leaves Escoffier as winner by 43 minutes and 37 seconds.

Loic Escoffier said on the dock, "Gilles had a great race. He was the one who clearly should have won. And I know what it is like as I capsized in the Irish Sea four months ago. So I know what that feels like and we always have it in the back of our mind. There are a lot of emotions right now because sailing like this is very stressful. When I learned of Gilles' capsize, it was not easy to deal with. And in this class of enlightened amateurs, we have shown that there is a race to be won. We push ourselves like everyone else and for longer. That is what makes the Route du Rhum so engaging. There are battled in all the classes. And I'm thinking of my brother Kevin (IMOCA - Holcim-PRB) who also arrived in a tight group, a 'pocket handkerchief'."

He added, "And I want to say a word for Etienne Hochede who also capsized in the Irish Sea and who fixed his boat with no budget and he is currently out there at sea fighting against Philippe Poupon, it's wonderful. The Rum Multi is a class that we have not heard the last of."

Globe40 Leg 5: The Challenge Of The Horn
Today at 15:00 hours local time (01:00 UTC Sunday 27 November), the GLOBE40 crews set sail on leg 5 in Matavai Bay to the north of the island of Tahiti, bound for the Argentinean stopover of Ushuaia via the legendary yet feared Cape Horn. A striking moment in this GLOBE40 project, this start symbolizes a return to offshore racing for French Polynesia, a truly exceptional maritime region thanks to its sheer scale and scope, and the intrinsic beauty and diversity of its islands. Ahead of the skippers lie some 4,500 miles (8,334 km) along the direct route, and doubtless more than 5,000 miles in reality, before they officially earn the title of Cape Horners (with the exception of American Joe Harris who already boasts this particular badge of honour.)

An exceptional leg
The coming leg boasts a course that is as unique as it is rare: setting out from the shores of French Polynesia at around 20° south, navigating a large section of the Pacific, powering along the coast of Chile and Patagonia, rounding Cape Horn at 55° south, and then making headway amidst the magnificent backdrop of mountains and wild nature towards the town of Ushuaia via the Beagle Channel, which links the Atlantic to the Pacific and to the centre where the Argentinean resort town is located. This latest voyage equates to a passage of 22 to 24 days according to Christian Dumard's latest weather forecast.

Winning out the box - RORC Baltic Sea Race
Baltic Sea Race The first Baltic Sea Race which took place this summer was an instant success... not so much a classic in the making but a classic already

The idea of a new 635-mile race in The Baltic Sea was the brainchild of the Ocean Racing Alliance. At the core of the Finnish organisation are three passionate RORC sailors: Jan Paukkunen, Sakari Kalske and Ari Känsäkoski, who have all competed in the Rolex Fastnet Race and RORC Caribbean 600. ORA proposed a race, starting and finishing in Helsinki, and approached the Royal Ocean Racing Club to organise it.

On 21 July 2022 that idea became reality when more than 200 sailors including all of the ORA founders, crossed the start line of the inaugural Roschier Baltic Sea Race. Sailors from 18 different nations took part. Teams from Poland, Germany, Sweden and Finland won honours in the race, with a fairy tale overall victory for the smallest boat.

18ft Skiffs NSW Championship, Race 1
A big wind change hits the leader on the run to the finish. Click on image for photo gallery.

18ft Skiffs Sydney Harbour: The 18 footers 2022-23 championship season began today when the Australian 18 Footers League staged Race 1 of the NSW Championship in a mainly 8-10 knot North East wind on Sydney Harbour.

The series favourite Andoo team of John Winning Jr., Seve Jarvin and Sam Newton gave a polished performance to lead for almost the entire course and take out the race by 31s from Smeg (Michael Coxon, Ricky Bridge and Tom Anderson) which closed the gap on the winner on the spinnaker run to the finish line.

Ilve (Cam Gundy, Harry Bethwaite and Charlie Gundy) grabbed the lead soon after the start and was well placed throughout the entire race before finishing in third place, 3m34s behind Smeg.

Fisher & Paykel (Jordan Girdis) was another consistent performer to finish fourth, ahead of Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price), Yandoo (John Winning), Birkenhead Point Marina (Kirk Mitchell) and The Kitchen Maker-Caesarstone (Lachlan Steel).

Ilve's performance was impressive and the Cam Gundy-led team won the W.C. 'Trappy' Duncan Memorial Trophy section of today's race, which is the eighth race for the season point score trophy.

Yandoo leads the season point score with a total of 38 points, followed by The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines (Alex Marinelli) on 40, Smeg 43, Birkenhead Point Marina 54, Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Jim Colley) 59 and Fisher & Paykel on 60.

Race 2 of the NSW Championship, for the Alice Burton Memorial Trophy, will be sailed next Sunday (December 4). -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Sailing World on Water November 25
Emirates Team New Zealand have suffered damage to the bow of their AC40 today after an early start testing on Auckland's Hauraki Gulf in some top end conditions. The resulting impact of the water pressure, collapsed the foredeck at the bow of the AC40. Significantly, the watertight bulkhead aft of where the damage occurred, maintained its structural integrity,

Fast fix
Based on data analysis following this week's crash Emirates Team New Zealand's engineers have designed an internal structure upgrade package that will be rolled into all current and future AC40 yachts

Emirates Team New Zealand have reacted quickly to come up with a solution for the structural failure to the bow of their AC40 sustained four days ago when the boat nosedived at high speed while testing in waves on Auckland's Hauraki Gulf.

The crash resulted in severe damage to the forward sections of the hull and deck structure, but, even as the on-water team was recovering the yacht and returning to dock, the Kiwi team's engineers had already began reviewing onboard data to identify the root cause of the issue.

"The first things we look at in this type of dynamic event are the accelerations and rotation rates that come from yacht's inertial measurement unit (IMU)," explained Jamie Timms, Emirates Team New Zealand Structural Engineer.

"These readings allow us to infer the magnitude of the hydrodynamic loads on the hull structure, which we can then input into our structural simulations to estimate the stress state and structural margins of safety. We also use the data to validate our fluid dynamics simulations of high velocity hull impacts."

"During the 36th America's Cup, we captured and catalogued the dynamics of every major event across the three yachts we sailed in that campaign and we enveloped those, with additional margin, to define the load cases for the AC40. -- Justin Chisholm in CupInsider.com

A strong fleet with an international flavour and multiple former winners and record holders is preparing to take on the 2022 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

118 boats are entered for the 77th edition of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia's (CYCA) 628 nautical mile race, which begins on Sydney Harbour at 1pm on Monday 26 December.

Eight entrants are travelling to Australia, from Germany (Orione), Great Britain (Sunrise), Hong Kong (Antipodes), Hungary (Cassiopeia 68), New Caledonia (Eye Candy and Poulpito), New Zealand (Caro) and the USA (Warrior Won).

The four 100-foot maxis leading the charge for Line Honours are Black Jack, the 2021 Line Honours winner, Hamilton Island Wild Oats, which holds the record for most Line Honours wins with nine as Wild Oats XI, the race record holder Andoo Comanche, now skippered by John Winning Jr, and LawConnect, which was first over the line in the 2016 race as Perpetual LOYAL.

Speaking at the 2022 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race Media Launch at the CYCA on Wednesday, Black Jack skipper Mark Bradford said: "The best international sailors in the world will be here for the race.

"Achieving your goal in the race, whatever that is, does take some time to reflect on and I think for us that moment came when we decided to do it again.
