Richomme does the double, winning the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe Class40 for the second time
French skipper Yoann Richomme joined the very elite group of solo ocean racers to have twice won their class on the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe today, when he brought the new build Lombard Lift 40 V2 Paprec-Arkea through the finish line of the 12th edition this Wednesday afternoon at 16:23:40 UTC to win in the Class40 from a record entry of 55 boats.

Richomme repeats his 2018 Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe title success in the class with a facsimile programme, launching his latest new boat in the same season as the race, optimising and making the boat reliable over a compressed period before going on to win comfortably.

Key differences this year are that the 39-year-old Southampton (UK) trained naval architect was called over the start line early off Saint-Malo on Sunday November 9th and had to take a four-hour mandatory penalty. Although he cleverly took it while the fleet were negotiating a spell of light airs and strong tides at Cape Fréhel - he later estimates his net loss was more like two and a half hours - he immediately dropped to 50th with a deficit of 19 miles on the leaders. But with his characteristic drive and smart, immaculate strategies, he pulled through the fleet and took the lead just before the Azores.

Richomme's lead was up to 120 miles in the fast trade winds sailing which allowed him the luxury of a relatively serene passage around the west of the island of Basse Terre today.

With an elapsed time of 14d 03hrs 08mins 40s, Richomme breaks his own course record for the class by two days. His winning time in 2018 was 16 days, 03 hours, 22 minutes and 44 seconds. He also becomes the first skipper to win Class40 in successive years.

Ambrogio Beccaria sailing Allagrande Pirelli has finished in second place in the Class40 fleet. Hit race time 14 d, 7 h, 23 m and 48 s.

Corentin Doughest sailing Queguiner - Innoveo rounds out the podium with a time of 14 d, 9 h, 24 m and 12 s.

British rookie Harayda finishes 14th IMOCA
James Harayda, the 24 year old British rookie skipper, completed a remarkable first major IMOCA solo race when he secured 14th place on the 12th Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe crossing the finish line this Tuesday morning 23rd November at 03:38:25hrs UTC. His elapsed time for the course is 13d 14h 13m 35s, 1d 20m 37s 10s after race winner Thomas Ruyant.

Harayda receives two hours of compensated time as he diverted to help fellow skipper Fabrice Amedeo whose IMOCA caught fire and sank. He was stood down before he reached the zone but was given redress for his actions.

Considering the young, ambitious Harayda only launched his IMOCA programme in April when he purchased Stephen Le Diraison's Finot-Conq designed A Time for Oceans and his only previous solo race was the September's 48 Heures Azimut warm up race, his 14th place today is a very promising start to a long term campaign which he hopes will take him beyond the 2024 Vendée Globe to new boat programme for 2028.

IRC rating responds to sailors with rule and formulation changes for 2023
Following the international IRC annual Congress meeting in October, the 2023 IRC rule text is now published on the IRC website and includes changes that reflect IRC's desire to listen to what sailors want, simplify rules where possible and respond to changing trends not only in technical development but also racing practices.

The IRC Technical Committee and IRC Congress have shown their commitment to reducing costs for sailors and recognising the varied range of course types in which IRC boats race by introducing a secondary certificate. Any owner will now be able to apply for a second valid certificate for their boat, previously an option only available to those swapping between fully crewed or short-handed racing (rule 8.2.1). The secondary certificate incorporates the former short-handed certificate and allows more configuration changes, with potential applications being inshore/offshore; shorthanded/crewed; racing/cruising sails; or even a specific configuration for a single event.

The 2023 IRC rule applies from 1st January 2023, except in countries with June-May validity where the rule will apply from 1st June 2023.

18 Footer Championship Season Begins On Sunday
Rag & Famish Hotel, the big threat to series favourite Andoo. Click on image for photo gallery.

18 Footer Sunday's Race 1 of the NSW 18ft skiff Championship is the first step of a long campaign towards becoming the world's best team at the 2023 JJ Giltinan Championship next March on Sydney Harbour.

With the return of the triple Giltinan champion New Zealand team led by David McDiarmid, after Covid restrictions had interrupted its winning run in 2021 and 2022, plus an expected influx of contenders from Europe, the 2023 JJs is going to be far more competitive for the locals, despite the advantage of sailing on home waters.

The additional challenge at the 2023 championship will make it the best 18 footer regatta for several seasons but it will put more pressure on the top local teams.

Local reaction to the challenge starts on Sunday.

The Spring Championship series has given all Australian 18 Footers League teams the opportunity to tune up for the campaign ahead and Sunday is sure to bring out the best from the leading contenders.

The reigning 2022 JJ Giltinan champion Andoo team has a positional change with the return of skipper John 'Herman' Winning Jr to the fleet after missing the 2021-22 season.

Last season's skipper Seve Jarvin remains in the team and will sail on the sheet, alongside bowman Sam Newton.

The formidable, and highly experienced, team will start favourite on Sunday although there is likely to be a very strong challenge from the young, Harry Price-led Rag & Famish Hotel team, including Josh McKnight and Harry Hall. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Your humble narrator will be deep in a food coma Thursday evening, having had to carefully choose which pie to finish off an enormous Thanksgiving meal with. Given that said pies are being cooked by my wife, my daughter and my sister in law, I will be obliged to have all three in the spirit of familial comity. No sane man would attempt a newsletter after that.

The Last Word
Look, when you're in office, you gotta do a lot of things sometimes that are not always, in the strictest sense of the law, legal, but you do them because they're in the greater interests of the nation!
