Duelling to the layline then drag race finale
In IMOCA, the thrilling duel between Thomas Ruyant (LinkedOut) and Charlie Dalin (Apivia) continues. Behind the two frontrunners, there is a group of five sailors racing against each other, while further back, the objectives are very different.

Beyou's red and black flying machine is proving a potent weapon on its first transatlantic race

It's a brand new boat, a new design with a revolutionary new rudder configuration taking part in its first transoceanic race and it has been consistently in the podium places.

This Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe has seen an impressive performance by Jérémie Beyou on his Sam Manuard-designed Charal 2, with its inverted V-shape rudder configuration and the Manuard signature scow bow.

In the history of the Class very few boats have been designed after a Vendée Globe, then been built and launched and then gone on to complete the Route du Rhum. So Beyou is on his way to a considerable achievement and so far everything has been going like clockwork.

The 46-year-old Breton skipper from Finistere had to retire from the last Route du Rhum on the VPLP-designed Charal 1 because of technical issues. He then saw his dreams of winning the Vendée Globe dashed, after he had to return to the start for repairs, and he eventually finished 13th. As a result, this is a massively important race for Beyou.

Le Roux (Koesio) wins nail biting Ocean Fifty showdown
In the 12th Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe French solo skipper Erwan Le Roux sailed Koesio across the finish line first in the Ocean Fifty fleet this morning at 10:50:52 UTC (06:50:52 local time) narrowly beating second placed Quentin Vlamynck (Arkema) after nail-biting head to head over the final miles around the west of Guadeloupe.

The duo were only 100 or so metres apart early this morning. The older, more experience Le Roux, 47, who won this class in 2014, stayed offshore at the southern turn around the island, picked up more breeze and finished just 18 minutes and 13 seconds ahead of the 29 year old Vlamynck who led since the early days of the race but was caught by Le Roux last night on the final approach to Guadeloupe.

At the start of his fourth Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe in Saint-Malo, Erwan Le Roux was of course one of the favourites, but the skipper from La Trinité was well aware that the standard in the class had progressed a lot in recent years, thanks the increased professionalization, partly down to him as President of the Ocean Fifty class. He only acquired Koesio, the most recent trimaran in the fleet early this year and worked hard to master this VPLP designed boat that seemed to perform well downwind, but not as well as others upwind.

After a decent start, Le Roux was not outstanding in the Bay of Biscay, managing not to drop too far behind, but between 15 and 35 miles from the leader. By the second front, the gap had widened to 70 miles, but when Thibaut Vauchel-Camus capsized, others seemed to become more cautious and the gap stabilised at around sixty miles. To the north of the Azores, he overtook Sébastien Rogues (Primonial) and Armel Tripon (Les P'tits Doudous) with some good positioning options thanks partly to his router, Jean Yves Bernot with whom he has worked since 2010 and Yann Elies, with whom he won the Transat Jacques Vabre in 2013. Le Roux remained convinced of the ability of his boat downwind. "If I am 100 miles behind when we start downwind, I won't be too worried," he said before the start.

Upping the (whole) game - Musto
Musto Racing Imoca 60s fully crewed around the world has never been done before. In the 2023 Ocean Race these boats will be under a whole new world of pressure. So will the technical clothing protecting the crews...

Musto's iconic HPX technical clothing has been fully redesigned and redeveloped ahead of the latest edition of The Ocean Race. A lot of testing and feedback from Imoca 60 sailors, especially 11th Hour Racing Team, has informed the design process which was underpinned by four key pillars: durability, safety, adaptability and sustainability.

The jacket, smock, salopettes (both men's and women's) and drysuit are all completely new, as are the fabrics, while both mid and base layers have been fully integrated into the HPX system for the first time.

Where Are We Headed With Ireland's Racing For "Boats-with-a-Lid"
Is most "ocean racing" today really oceanic? Does "offshore racing" really involve going truly offshore? Are boats touted as being "cruiser-racers" ever really used for genuine cruising? And are sailing enthusiasts who like to think of themselves as being devoted adherents of some - or indeed all - of the above, surely tending to over-egg the cake more than somewhat, in order to cut a bit of a dash and enhance a reputation for seagoing toughness when they get together to socialise with other sailing enthusiasts?

It's an effect which is accentuated when such dedicated matelots are meeting within earshot of civilians at mid-week. And it's much more prevalent in England or Scotland or France, where many sailors live at some considerable distance from their boats, whereas in Ireland, we'd tend to regard such a situation as plain silly.

Be that as it may, in the profoundly English rural depths of the Cotswolds, there are so many weekend sailors living in the area that they felt such a need for mid-week get-togethers that they formed the Chipping Norton Yacht Club. It would meet at least once a week (and may still do so) in some totally non-nautical pub (the Pug & Ferret perhaps) in order to talk boats, and the members tended to wear their sailing clothes – or outfits, or whatever you want to call our unmistakably salty gear – at these gatherings, and chat with increasing volume about the past weekend's experiences, and the excitements to come.

18ft Skiffs Spring Championship, Race 7
Click on image for photo gallery.

18ft Skiffs The Yandoo 18ft skiff team of John (Woody) Winning, Fang Warren and Josh Porebski became the 2022-23 Spring champions after 30-35 knot westerly winds battering Sydney Harbour forced the abandonment of today's scheduled final race of the Spring Championship series.

It was a well-deserved victory for the consistent Yandoo team which would have gone into the race with a 14 points lead over nearest rival, The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines (Alex Marinelli, Darcy McCracken and Matt Doyle), which will now be declared second place in the championship.

Third place overall is the Smeg team of Michael Coxon, Ricky Bridge and Tom Anderson.

Top ten placings in the championship are: Yandoo on 23 points, The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines on 37, Smeg 38, Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Jim Colley) 43, Birkenhead Point Marina (Kirk Mitchell) 45, Lazarus (Marcus Ashley-Jones) 46, Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price) and Fisher & Paykel (Jordan Girdis) on 53, Burrawang-Young Henrys (Simon Nearn) 55 and Andoo (John Winning Jr) on 59

The first major championship of the 2022-23 season begins next Sunday, November 27, when the Australian 18 Footers League conducts Race 1 of the NSW Championship on Sydney Harbour. -- Frank Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Harken International Youth Match Racing Championship
For the first time in 30yrs of the event, racing was Abandoned late in the afternoon on the final day before any racing took place due to weather conditions in Pittwater. As a result, the final placings were based on the team's Round Robin results and placings in the Semifinals, which saw Ethan Prieto-Low from Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club crowned the 2022 Winner! A well-deserved win.

What would have seen teams pushing their limit to outsail each other on Sunday was never to be in what can only be explained as a 'crazy day', that's sailing where mother nature rules in the end.

Even with the last day not going to plan, teams had a great opportunity to socialize and enjoy the downtime on Pittwater. For some teams, they only have a day's rest before their next event on Sydney Harbour.

Winners of the Rockin' Robin Perpetual Trophy and taking home $1300 in prizes money - Ethan Prieto-Low from Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club
Max Paul from Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron - Taking home $750 in prizes money
Max Brennan from Balboa Yacht Club - Taking home $550 in prize money
Marcello Torre (RFBYC)
Josh Hyde (RNZYS)
D'Arcy Kemp (RPAYC)
Brayden Hamilton (RNZYS)
Daniel Kemp (RPAYC)
Chelsea Williams (CYCA)
Kevin Le Dreau (CNC)

The 'Umpires' Award is new for 2022 and presented by the Chief Umpire and this is awarded for 2022 for the youngest skipper and team - Kevin Le dreau from CNC (FRA) taking home $400 in prize money.

Tapio is safe and sound!
Successful rescue operation for Tapio Lehtinen in the Southern Indian Ocean. Kirsten Neuschafer first to reach his position, and take him to safety aboard Minnehaha before transferring him onto the Bulk Carrier M.V. Darya Gayatri.

GGR entrant Kirsten Neuschafer (ZAF) was first to reach Tapio's position this morning at 0510 UTC. The South African sailor whisked GGR Veteran and Finnish sailing legend, Tapio Lehtinen, from his liferaft where he had been since Friday 0700 UTC.

Three boats had been diverted yesterday to assist GGR entrant Tapio Lehtinen after he activated his Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) at 0654. He then activated his Liferaft Personal Locator Beacon at 0854 UTC following the sinking of his yacht Asteria.

Kirsten Neuschafer aboard Minnehaha, who was the closest to Tapio at 105 miles, contacted the GGR Crisis Team after receiving the message on her YB3. In accordance with the Race Office, she broke the seal of the emergency GPS and diverted her course towards Tapio's position.

The GGR crisis team kept contact with the MRCC Cape Town coordinating the rescue as well as the bulk carrier M.V. Darya Gayatri, Kirsten Neuschafer and Tapio Lehtinen.

Fifth Annual J/70 U.S. Youth National Championship
St. Petersburg, Florida: Nine teams vied for the fifth annual J/70 U.S. Youth National Championship, hosted by St. Petersburg Yacht Club in St. Petersburg, FL from November 18-20. Thirteen races were completed in fresh breeze on Friday and Saturday, however Sunday's cold front brought a bit too much wind and waves.

The top three:
1. Red Hot Chili Peppers, Emery Diemar - 43
2. Corinthian Yacht Club, Pearse Dowd - 51
3. Suss buss, Callen Burnett - 52

The goal of this event is to help develop and build leading-edge junior keelboat sailing programs across America. Youth teams representing yacht clubs from as far away as Minnesota competed on provided J/70s with class sails. Boats were identically rigged and tuned at base settings recommended by the sailmaker.
