IMOCA, Class 40 Leaders under pressure
The Ultim 32/23 podium was completed yesterday when Thomas Coville brought Sodebo Ultim 3 in to Pointe-à-Pitre in third, his fifth podium from five Route du Rhums. Next to come in should be Yves Le Blevec on ACTUAL Ultim 3 who had just over 550 miles to the finish this morning with Francis Joyon on IDEC Sport a further 100 miles or so behind. The final miles, just under 1400 for the OCEAN FIFTY and over 1500 for the IMOCA do look complicated, particularly through the next 24 hours as the winds continue to be very unsettled with big shifts in direction and wind direction.

The net effect seems to be some continued compression, the so called accordion effect as the leaders are seeing some of their margins eroded as they drop south into the more unsettled winds. Quentin Vlamynck (Arkema), Charlie Dalin (Apivia) and Yoann Richomme (Paprec Arkea) also lost a few miles on the pack. And so after just over a week of racing the game is still wide open. Always, always remember this Route du Rhum-Destination course often brings a 55 mile sting in the tail with the passage southwards around Basse Terre if it at night.

in the IMOCA fleet constant leader Charlie Dalin has seen his margin eroded from 74 miles to 21 miles on his runner-up, Thomas Ruyant (LinkedOut). The Azores high, which they are crossing is, unusually, much more ridged than round and so forming a big, wide hurdle.

Further back in Class40, the situation is rather different. Over the past few hours, most of the pack had to deal with yet another front, which although weaker than the previous ones, took some time to cross.

A rematch of sorts? Joyon looking to contain Le Blevec
Thursday afternoon on their final approaches to Guadeloupe Francis Joyon (IDEC Sport) is fourth and just under 80 miles ahead of Yves Le Blevec (ACTUAL Ultim 3) as wily veteran Joyon this time prepares to try and contain the boat which he pipped to the 2018 race victory.

So Joyon, aboard his faithful IDEC SPORT built in 2006, is this time well positioned to begin the race around the island ahead of her rival. The boats have been neck and neck averaging 27 knots, but Francis Joyon with his traditional boat has warded off the attacks of the flying trimaran. "With Bernard (Stamm) and Christian (Dumard), we focused on two gybes which allowed me to pass along to leeward of Actual. We have been battling it out with Yves since the start. It would be pleasing to finish ahead of him. I think I have always rounded Guadeloupe by night."

Wight Vodka Best Sailor's Bar
Wight Vodka We celebrate our fourteenth annual competition to find the Best Sailor's Bar on earth. All previous winners are eligible for the award. For our 14th anniversary three factors will be taken into consideration:

1. Best story about why a particular bar is the best in the world. Stories like "I met both my husbands here", "I never knew that there were that many different burgees in the world, let alone at a single establishment", and "A place lost in time, when you walk in it could be 1930 or 2022" will weigh heavily in our decision.

2. Drink recipe created at, or at the very least, SERIOUSLY promoted at, said establishment. Full instructions and ingredients please, so that we can all conduct the requisite research on the subject as the days (in the northern hemisphere) grow shorter and darker.

3. The voting. The top ten establishments based on 1) and 2) will be determined by EuroSail News, Wight Vodka and Seahorse and announced on Monday January 2nd. Voting starts then and finishes on January 15, winner to be announced on January 17, 2023

Half of the Golden Globe fleet in the Southern Ocean, Pat Lawless and Damien Guillou out
Two front runners of the Golden Globe Race have retired into Cape Town with wind vane failures. Damien Guillou arrived in Cape Town this monday having lost his windvane rudder. Pat Lawless retired on November 10th after the failure of a critical bearing bush, caught without a spare. Both sailors did not wish to continue after repairs in port.

GGR 2026 will require that any modification to a windvane system, regardless of brand, be submitted to the manufacturer and the GGR for their feedback and comments beforehand.

"With Pat and Damien out of the race, the GGR has lost two great sailors with big following whom we were a delight to check on the tracker. They were always inviting themselves to the forefront of the fleet! We want to thank Green Rebel, a leader in renewable energy, and PRB, a historic Vendee company and sailing sponsor for supporting those talented sailors and great ambassadors for our sport and their home countries. The GGR is a race of attrition and there may be more to come." Don McIntyre, GGR Founder and Chairman

With the fleet split between the South Atlantic and the Southern Oceans, unstable weather systems are hampering progress on both ends of the fleet.

Still in the race:

1. Abhilash Tomy (43) / India / Rustler 36 - " BAYANAT "
2. Arnaud Gaist (50) / France / BARBICAN 33 MKII (long keel version) - " HERMES PHONING "
3. Elliott Smith (27) / USA / Gale Force 34 - " SECOND WIND "
4. Ertan Beskardes (60) / UK / Rustler 36 - " LAZY OTTER "
5. Guy Waites (54) / UK / Tradewind 35 - " SAGARMATHA "
6. Ian Herbert Jones (52) / UK / Tradewind 35 - " PUFFIN "
7. Jeremy Bagshaw (59) / South Africa / OE32 - " OLLEANNA"
8. Kirsten Neuschäfer (39) / South Africa / Cape George 36 - " MINNEHAHA"
9. Michael Guggenberger (44) / Austria / Biscay 36 - " NURI "

Change of course at Clipper Ventures
The owners of Clipper Ventures will step back from running day-to-day operations as they look to put the company up for sale.

Founded in 1995, Clipper Ventures is the organisation behind the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, one of the most famous amateur sailing competitions in the world.

The race restarted in March following a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, with the 13th edition taking place next year.

"We are immensely proud of what the organisation has achieved to support the growth of participation in sailing, whether that's through our 12 editions of Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, sailing events, sailing school or expedition teams," said co-founder William Ward.

Ward will become executive chairman while co-founder Sir Robin Knox-Johnston will take over as non-executive director and president as they look to exit their shareholdings.

Sir Robin and Ward approached FRP Corporate Finance to help find their business a new home.

Tahiti, the midway point of the Globe40
The GLOBE40 has once again provided a suspenseful finish to leg 4 from Auckland to Papeete. The 34 minutes separating the top two finishers in Auckland after 7000 miles and 34 days at sea had not been forgotten; on arrival at the famous Bora-Bora atoll on Wednesday evening in local time, the scenario seemed to be well established and identical since the start, namely the leadership of the American AMHAS, which had a lead of around 40 miles. But there were still 140 miles to go to Papeete against the wind and an unfavourable option made the leader lose all his lead in a few hours and once again the first 3 boats were in a dead heat. An epilogue that kept the observers on their toes all day long and ended in the night with MILAI Around The World's victory, ahead of AMHAS by 7 minutes at the end of this 2550-mile leg with a coefficient of 2.

After leaving Auckland in the inner bay in front of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, the Class40s took a direct course due east upwind for a week, looking for a wind shift when they came into contact with a vast zone of high pressure; a week of pure speed with a few options more or less north or south of the route; then came the time to tack to take a quasi-direct route towards Bora-Bora, a mark to be skirted around; this leg was also a demanding race of speed with multiple sail changes to catch the slightest wind. Finally, the last part of the course between Bora Bora reserved the expected surprises, a reset of the positions of the 3 leaders.

The next leg (departure November 26) takes the fleet to Ushuaia south of the island of Tierra del Fuego in the Patagonia of Argentina. The first boat is expected about December 15th.

2022 DAME Winners revealed
Ocean Signal's RescueME PLB3 AIS Personal Locator Beacon has been announced as the Overall Winner of the DAME Awards at METSTRADE 2022.

Andre Hoek, chair of the DAME Award jury, presented the 31st-anniversary DAME Award at the opening of the METSTRADE show this morning (15 November 2022) during the METSTRADE Breakfast Briefing in the RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre.

With the introduction of Automatic Identification System (AIS) functionality, Return Link Service (RLS) technology, and Near Field Communication (NFC) capabilities in one 406 MHz Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), the RescueME PLB3 is said to represent a significant step forward in the evolution of PLBs.

In reaching its decision, the jury said it recognised that Ocean Signal had harnessed multiple technologies in such a small unit and the firm's determination to make already good products into better ones to maximise the chance of saving lives.

A total of 48 products were shortlisted for the 31st DAME Award competition, from a field of 104 entries spanning 14 countries.

Six products took category wins, 13 more received special mentions and the jury named its first Environmental Design Award this morning.
