Charles Caudrelier wins Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe, breaking course record
In the dark of a Caribbean night to a typically rapturous welcome, French solo skipper Charles Caudrelier on the Ultim 32/32 Maxi Edmond de Rothschild crossed the line off Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe at 05:02:05hrs local time (09:02:05 UTC) this morning. His was the first boat to finish the 12th Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe, the legendary 3,542 nautical mile solo Transatlantic race, which started off Saint-Malo, northern Brittany last Wednesday at 1415hrs.

Caudrelier, a 48-year-old two-time winner of the crewed Volvo Ocean Race - first as crew in the 2011/12 race and then skipper in 2017/18 - set a new record for the course with an elapsed time of 6 days 19 hours 47 minutes and 25 seconds, bettering the 7 days 14 hours 21 minutes benchmark set by veteran Francis Joyon in 2018 by 18 hours 34 minutes and 22 seconds.

Upon crossing the line, Caudrelier paid tribute to his team and family: "I'm not even tired. The first 24 hours were hard. I so wanted to win the race for the team. I've been dreaming of it since I was young. It's for the family Rothschild. It seemed like a crazy idea, building a boat that could fly. It's for Franck Cammas, as he had the experience. Without him I wouldn't be here. He left me the place for the Rhum. He could have won it himself. It's a Formula 1 team and I just drive in the race. This is a team effort and there's also Guillaume Verdier, the designer. I recently lost my mother and she isn't here to share this moment. Thanks to everyone for believing in me."

Racing his first ever solo multihull race on a giant Ultim 32/23, the hugely experienced Caudrelier held his cool through a nervous final night on the course, during which he spent long periods slowed to two or three knots as he negotiated calms in the lee of Gaudeloupe's volcanic Basse Terre island.

The 2017 launched Maxi Edmond de Rothschild is the flagship of the French banking family's Gitana team, and is acknowledged as the most evolved and reliable boat in the Ultim 32/23 class. Caudrelier now adds the highly coveted Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe title to a winning record across all the major Ultim 32/23 offshore and ocean races.

Francois Gabart, the runner up in 2018 who had victory wrested from his grasp by Joyon in the final miles of the race, is on course to finish second and was around 30 miles behind when Caudrelier crossed the finish line.

An Organisation In Mourning
This Wednesday morning, November 16, as the first boat was finishing the 12th Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe in Guadeloupe's bay of Pointe-a-Pitre, a motor boat which was carrying 11 people capsized. The circumstances surrounding the accident are still undetermined, but it caused the tragic deaths of two people who were on board, both employees of OC Sport Pen Duick, the company which organises the four-yearly transatlantic sailing race from Saint-Malo to Gaudeloupe.

"All our thoughts go out to the families of our two employees and to all of the profoundly affected members of our teams," said Herve Favre, President of OC Sport Pen Duick.

OC Sport Pen Duick's teams, the main partners of the event - the Regional Council of Guadeloupe, the city of Saint-Malo and Saint-Malo agglomeration, Brittany Region, the CIC - and all the stakeholders of the organisation, share the immense pain of the families and send them their deepest and sincere condolences.

Yandoo Set To Take Spring Championship
Yandoo's series leading team. Click on image for photo gallery.

Yandoo The John 'Woody' Winning-led Yandoo team of sheet hand Fang Warren and bowman Josh Porebski has taken an almost unbeatable lead in the australian 18 Footers League Spring Championship as the fleet prepares to line up in next Sunday's final race of the series on Sydney Harbour.

Following some very consistent performances, Yandoo went into last Sunday's two races with a narrow (three points) lead in the championship, before a win and a third placing in the two races 'catapulted' the team to a 14 points margin over its closest rival, The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines team of Alex Marinelli, Darcy McCracken and Matt Doyle.

Yandoo has a total of 23 points, followed by The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines on 37, Smeg (Michael Coxon) on 38, Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Jim Colley) 43, Birkenhead Point Marina (Kirk Mitchell) 45, Lazarus (Marcus Ashley-Jones) 46 and Fisher & Paykel (Jordan Girdis) and Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price) which are tied for seventh place on 53 points.

With 17 boats expected to compete in Sunday's race, Yandoo only has to compete and complete the course to almost be assured of victory.

Even if Yandoo completes the course in 17th place, (in a NO DROP points series) her total could be no worse than 40 points and that means only The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines and Smeg have the potential to score a lower total by one, or possibly, two points.

Yandoo's results last Sunday has resulted in a time penalty which will see the team starting from the back mark (scratch) and giving starts of up to 10 minutes to other competing teams.

Q&A with Olympic Champ Dylan Fletcher this Friday
Boat Speed. I don't need to tell you how vital it is for success on the race course. I've been reporting on numerous world class events over the past few months, and whether it's keelboats, Olympic skiffs, kitefoil racing or Wingfoil World Cups, you've got to develop raw boatspeed if you're to have a chance of winning.

We talk to Dylan Fletcher who's in argentina about to see if he can win one of the most coveted World Championships of all, the International Moth Worlds.

Dylan won Olympic gold with past Q&a guest Stu Bithell in that epic 49er battle with Pete Burling and Blair Tuke at the Olympic Games in Tokyo last year. Obviously Dylan and Stu developed world-class boatspeed in the 49er, but in the Moth Dylan has an additional challenge. He's a lightweight compared with the 90kg-plus sailors like Tom Slingsby who have been dominated the foiling singlehander in recent years. So when is it OK to go down another development path, and how do you develop your Boatspeed for YOU?

Join us on Friday morning (11am UK time) where we'll be talking all things speed-related with Dylan.

Marina Militare Nastro Rosa Veloce
Genoa, Italy: The Marina Militare Nastro Rosa Veloce of The Ocean Race-Genoa Grand Finale finished five seconds after 7:53 a.m. this morning, triumphant in the longest double-handed regatta in the Mediterranean thanks to the experience and determination of Pietro D'Alì, among the most accomplished sailors on the national scene, and Matteo Sericano, a young talent of the Italian sailing offshore.

They entered the Ionian Sea in the wake of Mexedia (Zorzi-Bauzà), who arrived at the finish line in Genoa at 15:57.43 as second overall, and of Sanfer (Waksman-Ferrelech), who retired yesterday about 100 miles from the finish line while in second position after the crew had exhausted every physical and psychological resourc, The Ocean Race-Genoa Grand Finale took the lead during the sailing between Trapani and Naples, surfing under gennaker even when the southwesterly gusts began to become prohibitive and the opponents pulled the handbrake.

The arrival of the third place finisher is expected later in the night: Marina Sant'Elena Venezia (adamson-Calanach) is expected on the finish line around 8 p.m. this evening.

The regatta, the course and the record
The Marina Militare Nastro Rosa Veloce boasts a course, 1492 miles long non-stop, that unravels between Venice and Genoa and plans to leave Sicily to the right. Double crews are engaged aboard the Beneteau Figaro 3 and the benchmark record was set last year by Sophie Faguet and Pierre Lebuchersu Team Urban Value and is 8g 8h 23m 27s.
