La Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe: Looking forward to better times
The last 24 hours have been tough for the competitors in the twelfth Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe, which started last Wednesday from Saint-Malo in France. After a series of incidents yesterday evening involving Louis Burton (Bureau Vallee), Amelie Grassi (La Boulangere Bio) and Aurelien Ducroz (Crosscall) - who all dismasted - and Thibault Vauchel-Camus (Solidaires en Peloton-ARSEP) who capsized, other skippers have suffered misfortune today (Sunday).

In the Rhum Multi category, Brieuc Maisonneuve (CMA Ile-de-France - 60000 Rebonds) was rescued by Jean-Pierre Dick (Notre Mediterranee-Ville de Nice) following the capsize of his catamaran. In the IMOCA class, Fabrice Amedeo (Nexans-Art & Fenêtres) discovered an ingress of water and is heading for Cascais (Portugal), while in the Class40, several competitors have also diverted. The race has been demanding and the warmth of the French West Indies and the finish line is something that must be earned.

The finish in Guadeloupe is some way off for the competitors still in the race. Considering the differences in speed between the boats that are taking part and the various incidents marking the early days of the transatlantic crossing, the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe fleet has logically stretched out.

The extremely fast Ultim 32/23 multihulls led by Charles Caudrelier (Maxi Edmond de Rothschild) and Francois Gabart (SVR Lazartigue), are getting close now to the trade winds and can hope to finish in Pointe-a-Pitre on Tuesday or Wednesday, according to Charles Caudrelier's routers. The IMOCAs and Ocean Fifty boats can also look forward to speeding downwind relatively soon. As for the Class40 and Rhum Multi and Rhum Mono categories, an approaching active front that is currently on the minds of the skippers. For once, the IMOCAs, which perform particularly well with the wind on the beam, are in amongst the Ocean Fifty multihulls. Charlie Dalin (Apivia) is right behind Quentin Vlamynck, while Jeremie Beyou (Charal) and Thomas Ruyant (LinkedOut) are close astern of Erwan Le Roux.

124 boats still racing, with 14 boats retired.

* News flash: Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe Ocean Fifty Class leader Solidarite en Peloton - ARSEP has capsized, skipper is safe inside the main hull

Leader of the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe in the Ocean Fifty class French skipper Thibaut Vauchel-Camus has capsized this evening when racing in tough conditions between Portugal and the Azores. The solo skipper is not injured and is sheltering in the central hull of his trimaran.

Vauchel-Camus, 43, who had taken the lead in the standings at 2000hrs last night, had just passed through the second cold front since the start of the race and was sailing again towards the south-west on starboard tack when Solidaires En Peloton - ARSEP capsized.

Giancarlo Pedote now deprived of his J2
Yesterday evening, making headway some 140 miles to the north-west of Cape Finisterre in around twenty knots of S'ly wind, jostling for 13th position in the IMOCA fleet competing in the 12th Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe alongside Yannick Bestaven, Justine Mettraux, Isabelle Joschke and Francois Guiffant, Giancarlo Pedote saw his J2 literally explode in two. It's a tough blow for the skipper of Prysmian Group, now deprived for the rest of his transatlantic race of this precious headsail attached via a furler to the mainstay. However, the Florentine immediately set about securing everything aboard the boat and can still have full use of his J3, albeit a much smaller genoa, which fortunately means that he won't be too heavily penalised in terms of performance.

"At dusk yesterday evening, whilst making headway under J2 with one reef in the mainsail in around twenty knots of breeze, calm in my bunk trying to get some rest, I heard the sail shivering. The first thing that sprang to mind was that with the boat bouncing up and down in the waves, the sheet had jumped off the winch, as that's already happened to me once before. Unfortunately, when I came out from under the cuddy, I discovered the J2 split in two under the luff (forward edge of the sail)," explained Giancarlo, who immediately set about making the boat secure as this famous J2 (J means jib) is attached to the mainstay connecting the deck to the mast.

Australia pull off incredible win to take control of SailGP Season 3
Dubai: Tom Slingsby's Australia SailGP Team delivered one of the more remarkable victories seen in SailGP to dramatically overtake both France and Great Britain from what had seemed respective winning positions to storm back onto the winner's podium.

At the close of the Dubai Sail Grand Prix presented P&O Marinas, Australia now leads the championship by nine points from New Zealand, with France one point further back, maintaining its position in the crucial top three placings. A good result from Great Britain in Dubai sees it just two points out of the Grand Final currently with four events left in the season, as the top four teams have started to pull away from the rest of the field.

But on the packed shorelines of Mina Rashid in front of sold out crowds the talk was all about Australia's come from behind win.

Earlier in the final podium race France had looked to have wrapped up the win as it enjoyed a huge lead, but a tactical error of its own saw Australia and Britain reel them in.

SailGP's global championship continues to conquer new frontiers with the first ever Singapore Sail Grand Prix the next event on January 14 and 15, 2023.

18ft Skiffs Spring Championship, Race 5 and 6
The Rag & Famish Hotel heads for the finish line to win Race 5. Click on image for photo gallery.

18ft Skiffs Spring Championship Races 5 and 6 of the Australian 18 Footers League's 2022-23 Spring Championship were sailed over two windward-leeward 3-buoys courses, on Sydney Harbour today and resulted in wins for Rag & Famish Hotel and Yandoo.

Following her victory today, going into next Sunday's final race of the championship, Yandoo (John Winning, Fang Warren, Josh Porebski) with a total of 23 points, holds a 14 points lead over The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines (Alex Marinelli) on 37, followed by Smeg (Michael Coxon) 38, Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Jim Colley) on 43, Birkenhead Point Marina (Kirk Mitchell) 45 and Lazarus (Marcus Ashley-Jones) 46.

With a no-drop pointscore applying to the series, Yandoo is almost certain to take out the title. Yandoo only has to finish within the first 15 placings in next week's race to hold an unbeatable lead.

In the first of today's two races, the new Rag & Famish Hotel skiff (Harry Price, Angus Williams, Harry Hall) was outstanding in the 15-18 knot breeze and took line honours by 1m14s from Fisher & Paykel (Jordan Girdis, Jacob Broom, Sam Monkhouse), with Yandoo a further 9s back in third place.

In the second race, Yandoo revelled in the easing breeze to defeat Birkenhead Point Marina by 36s, with Smeg (Skippered today by Micah Lane) a further 8s back in third place.

The earlier race winner Rag & Famish Hotel finished in fourth place, ahead of Fisher & Paykel and The Kitchen Maker-Caesarstone (Lachlan Steel).

While Yandoo looks to have the championship victory tied up, the battle for the next six placings is separated by only 11 points.

Race 7, the final race of the Spring Championship, for the Yandoo Trophy, will be sailed next Sunday (November 20). -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

120 boats locked in for 2022 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race
Multiple former winners, international entrants and a record number of two-handed competitors headline a strong contingent of 120 boats entered for the 2022 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

Entries closed on Friday 28 October for the 77th edition of the Rolex Sydney Hobart, with the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, the race organiser, welcoming a truly international fleet for the first time since 2019.

Four 100-foot maxis will lead the battle for Line Honours. John Winning Jr has chartered the VPLP 100 Andoo Comanche, which has won Line Honours on three occasions, including a current race record in 2017 for Jim Cooney and Samantha Grant.

Mark Bradford will skipper Peter Harburg's Reichel/Pugh 100 Black Jack, the 2021 Line Honours winner. Hamilton Island Wild Oats, which holds the record for most Line Honours wins (9), returns to the race for the first time since 2019, with Mark Richards again at the helm of the Oatley family's Reichel/Pugh 100, formerly named Wild Oats XI.

Christian Beck's Juan-K 100 LawConnect – a Line Honours winner for Anthony Bell as Perpetual LOYAL in 2016 – will look to go one better, having finished second over the line last year.

A highly competitive field of mini maxis features the 2018 Tattersall Cup winner, Alive, as well as Moneypenny, No Limit, Stefan Racing, URM Group, Whisper and Willow.

Following a successful introduction to the 2021 Rolex Sydney Hobart, the Two-Handed Division has grown to 21 boats for this year's race.

Two-handed entrants will this year be able to compete for the Tattersall Cup.

Entries Closing Soon For The Draycote Dash
It's just a week until the Fernhurst Books Draycote Dash, and entry for the first event of this season's Selden SailJuice Winter Series is closing soon...

The 14th edition of the Selden SailJuice Winter Series starts next weekend with the Fernhurst Books Draycote Dash on 19 & 20 November 2022. It's the first of nine events across the season, culminating with the series prizegiving on the main stage of the RYA Dinghy Show at the end of February.

Online entry for the event is open at www.sailjuiceseries.com

But be quick! Entries are closing this Tuesday for the Draycote Dash which entails four back-to-back handicap races on Saturday and the Pursuit Race on Sunday morning. Despite the summer drought, water level is close to normal and so there is plenty of space for good competition.

Among the competitors already entered are Joe Rowe from Draycote Water who became Topper World Champion ahead of a 144-boat fleet on Lake Garda earlier this year. For the Dash, Joe will be racing on his home waters in an ILCA 6 (Laser Radial).

Overall winner of the Selden SailJuice Winter Series more than a decade ago, Peter Gray is this time helming an Osprey with Geoff Edwards on the trapeze. There is also a good gathering of Challenger singlehander trimarans lined up to compete at the Dash.

The Last Word
We are all alone, born alone, die alone, and - in spite of True Romance magazines - we shall all someday look back on our lives and see that, in spite of our company, we were alone the whole way. I do not say lonely - at least, not all the time - but essentially, and finally, alone. This is what makes your self-respect so important, and I don't see how you can respect yourself if you must look in the hearts and minds of others for your happiness. -- Hunter S. Thompson
