Route du Rhum
With the first 24 hours of racing completed and the record sized fleet of solo racers settling into their ocean racing rhythm, the biggest threat to the lead of Charles Caudrelier and the Ultim 32/23 pacemaker Maxi Edmond de Rothschild seems to be a potential judgment that he jumped Sunday's 1415hrs start gun.

Caudrelier's Gitana team are contesting the call that their Ultim broke the line early. The data from the line marker buoys is updated in real time and is now being analysed against the Gitana team's positioning software and the tracking.

"All of the data has been recovered from the supplier of the beacons and is being compared to the track of the boat," reported Race Director Francis le Goff, adding "Either the committee considers that they have made a mistake when they sees these elements and the penalty would be cancelled, or the committee will confirm its first judgement and the International Jury will meet to give a decision."

In Saint Malo Kojiro Shiraishi's team announced the official abandon of their DMG MORI Global One which was damaged in a collision with Swiss rookie Oliver Heer (Oliver Heer Ocean Racing). The DMG MORI shore team have combined forces to help repair the bow and bowsprit of Heer's IMOCA as they try to get the Swiss skipper back on the race course 'within two or three days'.

Barfoot & Thompson Women's Match Racing World Championship
The home of the America's Cup delivered thrilling conditions for the opening day of the 2022 Barfoot & Thompson Women's Match Racing World Championship, the final stage of the Women's World Match Racing Tour.

Racing was off to a flying start at 10am in front of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron with teams of competitors jostling for wins on Auckland's famous Waitemata Harbour. A pleasant 10 knots at the start of the day meant fun sailing for the first flights before a squall set in early afternoon, bringing with it 25 knots of wind and rain, adding a challenging chop to already exciting racing.

Race officials delivered with 11 flights completed between starting at 1000 hours, and wrapping up the day with the final match starting just minutes before the 1900 hour cut off.

Pauline Courtois of France had the most successful opening day, taking eight wins from eight guns. Anna Ostling (SWE) and Megan Thomson (NZL) each won six of their eight races.

Flash: Armel Le Cleac'h and the Maxi Banque Populaire XI are heading for Lorient following the breakage of a daggerboard
Armel Le Cleac'h one of the favourites to win the Ultim class in the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe solo race from Saint Malo to Guadeloupe is heading to Lorient after breaking the daggerboard of his Maxi Banque Populaire XI at midday.

His team reported that at midday while sailing close-hauled in 20 knots of wind, Le Cleac'h heard a crack without any apparent shock. He noticed the breakage of the daggerboard under the bottom of the boat's hull. He is reported to be on his way to the technical base of the Maxi Banque Populaire XI in Lorient, which he will reach in about ten hours. All solutions will be studied there with Team Banque Populaire for the rest of this Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe.

"Armel told us about this breakage which requires him to return to Lorient for us to analyze the situation. Armel is safe, the road to reach our technical base will be in manageable conditions." said Ronan Lucas, Director of Team Banque Populaire.

The Route Du Rhum Viewed By The Routers
The 12th edition of the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe started on Wednesday at 2:15 p.m., and there has been no shortage of twists in the first 24 hours, some of them very cruel such as the abandonment of Sam Goodchild from the Ocean Fifty class, the U-turn of Armel Le Cleac' h in Ultim, a class in which Charles Caudrelier is under the threat of a 4 hour penalty. Tip & Shaft brought together two weather routing specialists, Dominic Vittet and Christian Dumard - who are respectively part of the routing cells of Yves Le Blevec and Francis Joyon in Ultim - to discuss the weather scenario at the start of the race.

Postponed from Sunday to Wednesday, the start of the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe was upwind with tacks to be made in the Channel and a first choice to be made after getting out of the Channel was which way to go. Looking at most trajectories it was almost unanimous to go for the southern route rather than going west.

"Everyone has the same thoughts more or less, namely that the fastest course sent us west to cross fronts and come down behind in a northwesterly sprint, but these fronts were going to be very violent, with 45 knots steady and that means gusts of 55-60. It wasn't reasonable in these conditions to go due west, even if it's always a little mentally challenging to tell yourself that you're choosing a route that, theoretically, will take 12 hours longer", explains Dominic Vittet.

"The skippers manage a compromise between the fastest route on paper, but one that is dangerous and potentially damaging, and a longer but safer route", adds Christian Dumard. Under these conditions, a form of logic was followed by the Ultims, with the favorites making the early pace, namely Charles Caudrelier ahead of Armel Le Cleac'h, François Gabart and Thomas Coville. But the classification was quickly turned upside down after 24 hours of racing when Armel Le Cleac'h, who some would say is cursed on the Route du Rhum, turned towards Lorient following the breakage of his daggerboard.

Cup Spy Nov 9: Red Bull has best session yet on Day 29
What happened in the Cup - November 9, 2022:

Luna Rossa dropped mast off LEQ12, while rigged and before launching on Sunday - expected to be out for a "few weeks".

American Magic with Hurricane Nicole advancing American Magic seem to have opted against sailing until the storm is done.

INEOS Britannia are yet to sail their newly launched LEQ12 from Mallorca

Alinghi Red Bull Racing sailed their AC75 from Barcelona and had another good sailing session - a much steadier performance in probably their best session to date.

Emirates Team New Zealand did not sail - crew have left to contest the SailGP regatta

Alinghi Red Bull Racing were the only team to sail on Wednesday, their 29th day of sailing their first generation AC75.

The conditions off Barcelona appeared to be excellent for AC75 sailing, despite claims that the winds were lighter than forecast. It looked to be a little fresher than Tuesday, and more into the range of the team's M2 mainsail which has been recut to accommodate the teams new boomless mainsail system which only came on at the beginning of the month.

"World on Water" November 11.22 Global Sailing Highlights
The 2022 Route du Rhum started at St Malo, and as expected, the fabulous ULTIM's blasted off the line, to lead at the first mark. Charles Caudalier, sailing Gitana's, huge Edmund de Rothschild, led the way. This is their report filed just after the start.

This is your weekly sailing highlights show, the world on Water for November 11 2022.

Yesterday afternoon 138 solo sailors in 6 different classes, started on the one line,, all at the same time, heading towards the Caribbean, in their epic race across the Atlantic Ocean.

In Australia the weather forecast is for rain so a very disappointed Land Speed team have therefore decided to put 'Horonuku' back in the shed for a couple of weeks to have a break while allowing more time for the surface to dry out in the increasing temperatures.

Delayed start for RMSIR 2022
The 32nd Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta (RMSIR) will kick off on 19 November as scheduled despite the event coinciding with the 15th General Election.

However, the Royal Selangor Yacht Club (RSYC) has announced that the Start of Race will now be held at 4.00pm instead of the usual after noon hour. This is to enable Malaysian participants and staff to fulfil their civic duties before the regatta.

This year's event will run from 18 to 26 November and the regatta is offering its full format with events for Classes 1 to 7. There are currently 26 boats from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Australia set to compete in the 2022 RMSIR. HH Raja Muda Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah will be sailing with the fleet again this year on the yacht SY Venture, along with sailors from 30 countries.

Traditionally, the RMSIR takes a regular course along Malaysia's west coast where participating boats push onwards from the start point at Port Klang and make their way - via the Straits of Malacca - to various anchorages and moorings at the islands of Pangkor, Penang and Langkawi in their attempt to win the prestigious Raja Muda Cup, among other prizes.

The RMSIR is Asia's second oldest race and Southeast Asia's most challenging sailing event. Regatta regulars vying for top honours once again include three-time Raja Muda Cup winner Windsikher, skippered by Sarab Jeet Singh and Nick Burns and 2019 winner The Next Factor, skippered by Rolf Heemskerk. Both are intent on reclaiming the Class 1 title. The other boats hoping to snatch the Class 1 title away are Ramrod (Gordon Ketelby) and Uranus (Malaysian Armed Forces).
