Great start conditions for 12th Route du Rhum
Postponed for three days due to stormy conditions in the English Channel and the Bay of Biscay today's rescheduled start to the 12th Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe was blessed with near perfect weather conditions as the record sized fleet set sail on the 3542 nautical miles solo Transatlantic race from Saint Malo to Guadeloupe.

A southwest by westerly wind of 11-15kts, bright sunshine and blue skies produced a picture postcard panorama as the record sized fleet of 138 boats in six classes. Several boats in most classes - including some of the favourites - appeared to have jumped the start gun and crossed the start early but this was being reviewed to be sure who the transgressors were. The standard penalty is four hours to be taken in the first 48 hours.

The 17 miles upwind passage to Cape Frehel saw the class leaders, mostly the pre-race favourites, stretch away in the solid breeze. Charles Caudrelier on the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild was first to break the CIC gate at the Cape much to the delight of the hundreds of spectators, including many camping car dwellers, who had prolonged their stay on the point to see the fleet pass this traditional final milestone before the open Atlantic. Caudrelier broke the gate at 1521hrs local time, Armel Le Cleach on Banque Populaire XI some eight minutes later.

In the 38 strong IMOCA fleet favourite Charlie Dalin was also first to pass Cape Frehel, the renowned upwind speed superiority of his fully optimised APIVIA proving key in the early stages of a classic race he has never contested and wants to win, as the swansong for his boat on which he has collected almost all the IMOCA class honours in recent years.

At three hours after the start gun Dalin was being pursued by Saint Malo's Louis Burton, over 1,5 miles behind on the Manuard designed Bureau Vallee with Thomas Ruyant (LinkedOut) in third. The first new, 2022 launched boat was Jeremie Beyou's Charal II in fourth, threatening Ruyant and going well.

At the Cape Frehel buoy just around 1700hrs there was a collision between Japanese skipper Kojiro Shiraishi (DMG MORI Global One) and Swiss rookie Oliver Heer (Oliver Heer Ocean Racing) both boats suffered damage and this evening were heading back to Saint Malo. Heer's boat has a damaged bow but both boats will be fully assessed when back in port.

Built without compromise - Baltic Yachts
Baltic Yachts The latest collaboration between Baltic Yachts and Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design puts equal emphasis on performance, elegance, efficiency and easy handling, with some unique and interesting features

What happens when an experienced, knowledgeable couple of ocean cruising sailors complete a full circumnavigation and then spend about 10 years developing and refining the concept for their ideal high-performance world cruising yacht, before finally getting Malcolm McKeon to design it and Baltic Yachts to build it?

This is the result. Currently in build and due for delivery in 2023, the Baltic 110 is an impressively elegant full custom design with serious performance potential, state-of-the-art systems and some interesting features. It's quite different to the recent McKeon-designed Baltic 112 Liara, which is more of a racercruiser.

Golden Globe sailors through Cape Town gate and heading deep South
Dreams shattered for a $20 part, some too slow to finish the challenge, others living life to the extreme and loving it , while a few are troubled by the mind game that is the Golden Globe. The challenges are building as the fleet moves out of the South Atlantic and contemplates the Southern Ocean on their doorstep! The stories are rich, but just as it was in 1968 and 2018, who will sail past the first Cape?

Simon Curwen (UK) on Clara / Howdens was first to the Cape Town Photo Gate, which he crossed at on Sunday 6th of November. The British sailors who had not been able to communicate with the rest of the fleet, possibly due to a faulty SSB radio installation, was happy to see people greeting him in Granger bay. During the live interview, he was surprised and delighted to learn he was still in first position and told the Team he was keen to go South!

The second half of the fleet is facing a variety of issues, in addition to a problematic lack of wind for the back end.

To avoid sailors getting too late in the season at Cape Horn with significantly worse weather conditions, there is a time limit to cross the Hobart gate, although there is no time limit for the race itself.

The notice of race stipulates that a sailor arriving "at the Hobart Gate after 1200 hrs Local time on 31st January 2023 becomes a GGR Voyager on arrival and may not continue toward Cape Horn earlier than 1000 hrs Local time on 1st December 2023. A Chichester Class entrant arriving at the Hobart gate after 1200hrs Local time on 31st January is withdrawn from the event."

RS21 World Championship

RS21 World Championship Biograd Na Moru, Croatia: The first-ever RS21 World Championship is officially completed. The week has been filled with sunshine, a great variety of light and strong wind conditions, close racing and lively debate on tactics ashore. On some days, the competitors were challenged with tricky conditions, which meant that success came down to focus and fine-tuning to stay at the front of the fleet.

The four days of racing gave the RS21 Class everything they could have hoped for in terms of showing off the key attributes of the RS21. Its one-design nature showcased an ability to perform in light and tricky conditions and handle a big breeze and waves whilst retaining the enjoyment and thrill factor.

Congratulations to the inaugural RS21 Open World Champions ITA 225 with Gianluca Grisoli, Andrea Casale, Fabio Gridelli and Giorgio Tortarolo in first place, ITA244 with Giovanni Meloni, Niccolo Bianchi, Camilla Cordero and Pietro Negri in second place and third place ITA243 with Martin Reintjes, Francesco Rubagotti, Giulio Desiderato and Daniele Cassinari.

Also, congratulations to the inaugural RS21 Corinthian World Champions, GBR211 with Hugh Watson, Helen Watson, Emma McEwen and Susanna Peatsin, first place, POL213 with Wojtek Mysliwiec, Rafał Błażejczyk, Marcin Panas, Adrian Kaczyński in second place, and third place team GER289 with Claudia Rossi, Matteo Morellina, Andrea Spagnolli and Francesco Rampazzo.

The Return of the Spirit of Antigua Classics
Founder Kenny Coombs' underlying premise for the original Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta was to create a group of people who shared the same passion for racing vintage & classic yachts in the ideal sailing conditions of Antigua, with its amazing & unique historic background. The resulting camaraderie between this group, which varied from year to year as different yachts & sailors took part, became legendary, and was one of the chief reasons for the Regatta's success. Whether you arrived in flip-flops or on a private jet, it was a great leveller.

The new Classics Team aims to restore the original spirit of the Event, which will now take place 19-24 April 2023 during the traditional period prior to Sailing Week. Most events, including registration & dockage, will be in Nelson's Dockyard. These will include the Single-Handed Race and the Concours d'Elegance, followed by three days of glorious racing, culminating in the famous Parade of the Classics in English Harbour after the last race on the Sunday followed by Prize Giving 6-8pm. Monday will be for rest, relaxation - and fun, with the restoration of Gig Racing at the Admiral's Inn and thirst being slaked by Cream Teas served by elegant ladies in flowery hats & frocks ( stronger beverages will also be available at the bar). A new, slimline version of our famous Programme is also being prepared

Despite the late change in dates, we hope to attract participants who share the values of the new Classics Team and would like to join in re-creating the original spirit of this illustrious Regatta. Several boats have already expressed interest in participating including the elegant Adix, the biggest sailing yacht in the world.

We therefore invite any boat interested in taking part in 2023 to email our Regatta Organiser Robin Stout at

OnCourse Ep 22 - Route du Rhum special
The Route du Rhum is the biggest solo offshore racing event in the world. Walk along the dockside at the start venue in St Malo where 138 boats were alongside the quay and it's clear that this race across the Atlantic is a serious crowd puller. In just under two weeks the race village will see 2 million visitors strolling through a staggering offshore grand prix pit lane.

PlanetSail was there and as part of our Route du Rhum special we talk to some of the key players to find out more about this extraordinary event and the advanced machines that take part in this 3,500 race across the Atlantic to Guadeloupe.

And while the winter may be drawing in up here and the clocks have gone forwards, there's still loads to report on including several new launches and key announcements in the America's Cup.

We've also been boat testing with reports on why Swan's latest launch is also its boldest along with a hands on assessment of the new Excess 15 performance cruising cat.

Plus, we have plenty in Docktalk.

It's just as well the evenings have got longer.

SailGP breaks into mainstream

SailGP, one of the world's fastest growing sport leagues, is proving that high-octane, hydrofoiling sailboat racing is ready-made for the mainstream. A CBS broadcast on October 23 showcasing the league's race weekend in Saint-Tropez - the Range Rover France Sail Grand Prix - was the most watched sailing event on U.S. broadcast in over 30 years*, averaging 1.609 million viewers.

The viewership numbers prove that edge-of-your-seat racing isn't just for motorsport and there is an increasing appetite for SailGP's unique racing format that features the sport's best athletes competing in flying F50 catamarans that consistently hits speeds approaching 60 mph (100 km/h).

The CBS broadcast showcased racing from SailGP's fastest race day yet at the Range Rover France Sail Grand Prix | Saint-Tropez, where the French SailGP Team recorded a top speed of 62 mph (99.94 km/h) and where the U.S. SailGP Team had its first-ever SailGP event victory, led by SailGP driver and sailing legend Jimmy Spithill.

The Last Word
I used to go to the Improvisation Comedy Club every night in Times Square. How I didn't get killed in that area either means that 1) God is watching over me or 2) I am so insignificant to God that he didn't bother having me killed. -- Gilbert Gottfried
